[Experience with a technic using basic fuchsin for the demonstration of early myocardial ischemia]

A series of 156 patients dying suddenly and unexpectedly was analysed with respect to the occurrence of fibres staining with basic fuchsin with the method of Lie et al. (6). The findings were correlated with the cause of death, coronary sclerosis and heart weight. Positive staining was revealed in the form of contraction bands or perinuclear segments. No statistically significant correlation was demonstrated between the occurrence of positive fibres on the one hand and regressive myocardial changes due to coronary and extracoronary insufficiency or other causes on the other hand.

[Vaginal reflux during miction-cystourethrography in girls (author's transl)]

The cases of 57 girls with reflux of radioopaque iodin solution into the vagina during mictioncystourethrography are reported. In 52.6% (30 cases) no signs of anomalies of the urinary tract or of pyelonephritis were found. For this group of 30 girls pyuria (leucocyturia) was typical (in 86.6%). In contrast, a urinarty-tract infection was found only in a few cases (16.6%). The authors discuss the clinical importance of vaginal reflux and its role in the pathogenesis of urinary-tract infections.

Blood flow and transport of free fatty acids in striated muscle under chronic ischemia

Three weeks of ischemia of the right hind limb in rat produced by ligature and severing of the right common iliac artery, resulted in changes in FFA transport and blood flow in the regenerating tibialis muscle. FFA transport was measured using i.v. administered palmitate-1-14C bound to albumin. Uptake of palmitate-1-14C or 86Rb 90 s after i.v. administration was decreased in ischemic tibialis muscle, whereas no apparent effect of ischemia on the contralateral muscle was seen. Plasma FFA outflow rate measured according Beker and Rostami was not affected by the presence of an ischemic extremity in comparison with control animals. The plasma FFA inflow rate into the ischemic muscle was markedly decreased to values of 6.5 mmumoles FFA/min/g whereas in control animals values were 18.8 mmumoles FFA/min/g wet tissue. Decreased FFA inflow rate to the ischemic tibialis muscle was due to the decreased radioactivity of palmitate-1-14C in the muscle under the conditions of a constant plasma FFA pool. Differences in the uptake of palmitate-1-14C in tibialis muscle were dependent upon the muscle blood flow, which was markedly decreased in the ischemic muscle on indirect measurement with 86Rb or with the 133Xe clearance.

[Single-lead bipolar electrocardiography in the diagnosis of heart diseases]

Sixty seven thoroughbred race horse of various age categories were examined electrocardiographically by bipolar leak-apex of the heart -- withers; length of training corresponded to the age categories. Basic time and voltage criteria of EKG were statistically evaluated according to electrocardiographic curves: TF = 35.1 = %/- 6.82 pulses per min., time P = 0.16 +/- 0.03 sec., PQ = 0.03 +/- 0.04 sec., QRS = 0.12 +/- +/- 0.01 sec., TQc = 0.50 sec., R = 2.83 +/- 0.63 mV, Q = 0.38 +/- 0.31 mV. Repolarization phase of the chamber complex, mainly the T wave, is the most variable component of the whole EKG. In the set under study AV block I was found in 14.93%, AV block II in 2.98%, sinoauricular block II in 1.49% and auricular fibrillation in 1.49%. In the paper the basic EKG values and occurrence of arrhythmia in relation to the rate of the training of horses are discussed.

[Septic complications and atypical bacterial endocarditis in patients under hemodialysis]

In series of 68 patients who had been subjected to haemodialysis during life, septic complications were found in 16.2%. Bacterial endocarditis was observed in 8 of them. In 7 there occurred in abscess-like colliquation in the calcified attachment of the mitral valve. Lesioning by friction and an accelerated development of dystrophic valvular lesions are regarded the probable main etiopathogenic factors.

[Follow-up study on the hemostatic effect of the Vasolamin preparation in domestic animals]

In this paper the haemocoagulative effect of the Vasolamin preparation was examined after intravenous application in cattle, sheep, and horses by means of tests. After a laboratory confirmation of the coagulative effect of the tested preparation we used it for the purpose of haemostasis in the clinical practice. After an administration of the preparation faster coagulation of the blood was observed in all examined animals. The setting in of the effect could be observed already after 5 minutes, the maximum effect was recorded between the 15th and 30th minutes after application, and the effect lasted, although gradually weakened, for one to two hours. In the case of bleeding clinical patients the application of Vasolamin was always successful.

The effect of anabolic hormone 19-nortestosterone propionate on the metabolism of striated muscle during experimental ischaemia

The effect of the anabolic hormone 19-nortestosterone propionate (Superanabolon Spofa) on the metabolism of chronically ischaemic striated muscle (anterior tibial m.) was studied in a described model in the rat. Metabolic changes were estimated in terms of the activities of a number of enzymes in muscle fibres. Enzyme activities (AcP, ATPase, CE, LDH, MDH) were determined both biochemically and histochemically excepting SDH, which was determined only by the histochemical way. Morphological changes were investigated by routine histology. Administration of 19-nortestosterone propionate prevented enzymatic changes which are typical for chronic ischaemia, primarily the decrease in the activities of dehydrogenases of Krebs' cycle tricarboxylic acides (MDH, SDH). In addition, the ratio of red to white muscle fibres increased. Administration of anabolic hormone has a similar favourable action on ischaemic muscle as training, studied previously.
