Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship of helminth infection with atopy is controversial. Toxocariasis is the most common helminth infection in industrialized countries. The study aimed to investigate the association between Toxocara exposure and atopic features. METHODS The study is based on a cross-sectional survey of 463 subjects, randomly selected (stratified by decades of age) from a general adult population. Toxocara exposure was defined by the presence of serum Toxocara antibodies. Main outcome measures included total serum IgE levels, skin prick tests (SPT) to a panel of 13 relevant aeroallergens, specific IgE to aeroallergens (Phadiatop test), and respiratory symptoms evaluated by means of a questionnaire. RESULTS A total of 134 subjects (weighted proportion 28.6%, 95% CI 26.5-30.7%) showed Toxocara exposure. Pet ownership, rural habitat, farming, and low educational level were associated with Toxocara exposure. Toxocara exposure was associated with both positive SPT (particularly to mites) and positive specific IgE (Phadiatop test) after adjusting for potential confounders. The effect of Toxocara exposure on total serum IgE levels and blood eosinophil count was different in SPT-positive subjects and SPT-negative individuals. In SPT-negative individuals, Toxocara exposure was associated with an increase in both serum IgE levels and eosinophil counts, whereas an opposite trend was observed in SPT-positive individuals. Toxocara exposure was not associated with respiratory symptoms. CONCLUSIONS In this adult population, Toxocara exposure is associated with allergic sensitization, particularly to mites. There is evidence of an intriguing interaction between Toxocara exposure and allergic sensitization for both total serum IgE levels and blood eosinophil counts.

Abstract
We propose a programmable diffractive lens written onto a liquid crystal display (LCD) that is able to provide equal focal lengths for several wavelengths simultaneously. To achieve this goal it is necessary that the LCD operate in the phase-only regime simultaneously for the different wavelengths. We design the appropriate lens for each wavelength, and then the lenses are spatially multiplexed onto the LCD. Various multiplexing schemes have been analyzed, and the random scheme shows the best performance. We further show the possibility of finely tuning the chromaticity of the focal spot by changing the relative weights of the multiplexing among the various wavelengths.

Abstract
Serum cytokeratin (CK) levels are widely used as tumor markers. Serum levels of CK-18, a tumor marker also known as tissue polypeptide specific antigen (TPS), are increased in patients with alcoholic liver disease. Cytokeratin-18 is the main component of Mallory bodies, a hallmark of alcoholic hepatitis, which may also contain CK-19. Serum levels of CK-18 and CK-19, a tumor marker also known as CYtokeratin FRAgment 21-1 (CYFRA 21-1) were investigated in (a) heavy drinkers with alcoholic liver disease (n=15), (b) patients with malignancy (n=22), and (c) healthy controls (n=10). Serum levels of CYFRA 21-1 (CK-19) were markedly increased in patients with malignancy, but were similar in heavy drinkers and healthy controls. In contrast, serum levels of TPS (CK-18) in heavy drinkers were higher than those of healthy controls, and even tended to be higher than those of patients with malignancy. Both CK-19 and CK-18 levels were higher in cases of alcoholic hepatitis than in cases of fatty liver. Correlation with hepatocyte CK inclusions was stronger for serum TPS (CK-18) than for CYFRA 21-1 (CK-19). In conclusion, serum CYFRA 21-1 (CK-19) and TPS (CK-18) show a different pattern of increase that could reflect the composition of the altered hepatocyte CK network in alcoholic liver disease. Their usefulness as tumor markers, particularly that of serum TPS (CK-18), may be limited in patients with alcoholic liver disease.

Abstract
With the recent advancement in visualization devices over the last years, we are seeing a growing market for stereoscopic content. In order to convey 3D content by means of stereoscopic displays, one needs to transmit and display at least 2 points of view of the video content. This has profound implications on the resources required to transmit the content, as well as demands on the complexity of the visualization system. It is known that stereoscopic images are redundant which may prove useful for compression and may have positive effect on the construction of the visualization device. In this paper we describe an experimental evaluation of data redundancy in color stereoscopic images. In the experiments with computer generated and real life test stereo images, several observers visually tested the stereopsis threshold and accuracy of parallax measurement in anaglyphs and stereograms as functions of the blur degree of one of two stereo images. In addition, we tested the color saturation threshold in one of two stereo images for which full color 3D perception with no visible color degradations was maintained. The experiments support a theoretical estimate that one has to add, to data required to reproduce one of two stereoscopic images, only several percents of that amount of data in order to achieve stereoscopic perception.

Abstract
We report an exceptional case of cauda equina syndrome, caused by a chronic epidural hematoma of the lumbar spine, (L2-L3). A 53 year old man without history of trauma, lumbar punctures or antiagregant medication, suffered from progressive back pain and minor motor deficit in the legs. The etiology, MRI, intraoperative findings and microscopical study are presented and discussed. After surgery there was a complete resolution of the clinical picture.

Abstract
SUMMARY The crucial question - treat or not a brain arteriovenous malformation - has been the object of many studies, sometimes contradictory. The authors analyse retrospectively, clinically and angiographically, the results of the intra-arterial embolization in the treatment of 106 patients with brain arteriovenous malformation. The endo- vascular therapy was palliative or curative in 46% of the cases, in 30% of the patients the embolization was pre-surgery and in 18% the intra- arterial occlusion was pre-radiosurgery. In 6% the therapeutic protocol included embolization with surgery and radiosurgery. Cyanocrylate was used in 89% of the cases, and in 10% of the patients the embolic material used was Ethylene - vinyl alcohol copolymer - EVOH (Onyx). In this series 11% of total morbidity occurred - transitory in 8% and settled with permanent neurological deficit in 3% of the patients. The mortality post-embolization was 2% and the total mortality post-embolization and surgery was 3%. Total angiographic exclusion immediately post-embolization was confirmed in 24% of the cases. The mean period for clinical and angiographic follow-up was 38 months. 72 patients - 77% of the cases discharged from hospital showed complete exclusion of the lesion after the different combined therapeutic strategy - embolization, surgery and radiosurgery. New retrospective and long-term prospective studies based on the actual therapeutic protocols and new embolic agents are necessary to be able to evaluate accurately a new therapeutic reality in the brain arteriovenous malformations.

Abstract
Between January and April 2003, a sudden increase in positive respiratory tract specimens for Pseudomonas aeruginosa was observed in an intensive care unit of the University Teaching Hospital of Montpellier, France. Most of the strains were cultured from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid samples, suggesting that bronchoscopic procedures could be implicated. The relationships between isolates were investigated by antibiotyping and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Both phenotypic and molecular markers allowed identification of two consecutive nosocomial outbreaks of respiratory infections related to two different bronchoscopes. These two outbreaks implicated nine and seven patients, respectively. Four of these 16 patients had true infections and recovered with antibiotic therapy. Inspection of both bronchoscopes revealed a damaged internal channel caused by defective biopsy forceps. These defects led to improper cleaning and disinfection of the bronchoscopes despite adherence to all current reprocessing procedures. The two outbreaks were controlled after replacing the inner channels of the bronchoscopes and switching from use of re-usable to disposable biopsy forceps. These outbreaks emphasize the need to establish surveillance procedures for detecting contamination of bronchoscopes, and the importance of recording each endoscopic procedure to facilitate further investigations if needed.

Abstract
Methods of numerical integration of sampled data are compared in terms of their frequency responses and resolving power. Compared, theoretically and by numerical experiments, are trapezoidal, Simpson, Simpson-3/8 methods, method based on cubic spline data interpolation and Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) based method. Boundary effects associated with DFT- based and spline-based methods are investigated and an improved Discrete Cosine Transform based method is suggested and shown to be superior to all other methods both in terms of approximation to the ideal continuous integrator and of the level of the boundary effects.

We propose a technique to implement digital holography by means of a point diffraction interferometer. The device uses a liquid crystal television display and works under partially coherent illumination which makes it useful for 3D microscopy. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the prevalence, associated factors, and time-course changes of abnormal liver enzyme serum levels in adult patients with Salmonella enteritidis enterocolitis. METHODS The clinical records of 104 patients (age range 15-86 years, 46.2% males) admitted to hospital because of S. enteritidis enterocolitis were reviewed. The prevalence of abnormal liver enzyme levels was evaluated, as well as its possible relationship to data of systemic inflammatory response, severe sepsis, and bacteremia. In addition, time-course changes in serum levels of liver enzymes were studied in 16 cases with available follow-up after hospital discharge. RESULTS In patients without a pre-existing cause for liver enzyme abnormalities (n = 84), the prevalence of serum AST elevation was 23.0% (95% CI 15.4-34.5%), of serum ALT elevation was 17.9% (95% CI 0.6-20.0%), and of GGT elevation was 19.0% (95% CI 11.6-29.3%). The prevalence of abnormality for any of these enzymes (AST, ALT, or GGT) was 35.7% (95% CI 25.7-46.8%). The prevalence of altered serum alkaline phosphatase was lower. Alteration in liver enzyme serum levels was moderate in the majority of cases, and was found in association with the presence of fever. Serum enzyme levels decreased during the convalescence period after hospital discharge. CONCLUSIONS Abnormalities in liver enzyme levels are frequent during severe enterocolitis due to S. enteritidis in adult patients. These abnormalities are moderate and self-limited.

Abstract
Programmable apodizers written on a liquid crystal spatial light modulator (LCSLM) offer the possibility of modifying the point spread function (PSF) of an optical system in monochromatic light with a high degree of flexibility. Extension to polychromatic light has to take into account the liquid crystal response dependence on the wavelength. Proper control of the chromatic properties of the LCSLM in combination with the design of the correct apodizer is necessary for this new range of applications. In this paper we report a successful application of a programmable amplitude apodizer illuminated with polychromatic light. We use an axial apodizing filter to compensate the longitudinal secondary axial color (LSAC) effects of a refractive optical system on the polychromatic PSF. The configuration of the LCSLM has been optimized to obtain a good amplitude transmission in polychromatic light. Agreement between experimental and simulated results shows the feasibility of our proposal.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Serum levels of the tumor marker tissue polypeptide specific antigen (TPS, cytokeratin 18 fragments) are increased in patients with alcoholic liver disease, particularly in cases of alcoholic hepatitis. Mallory bodies, characteristic of alcoholic hepatitis, are cytokeratin 8 and 18 aggregates. The study was aimed at investigating the possible relationship of serum TPS levels with hepatocyte cytokeratin expression in patients with alcoholic liver disease. METHODS Twenty-four patients with alcoholic liver disease were studied. Immunohistochemical staining for cytokeratins 8 and 18 was performed in liver specimens by means of CAM 5.2 monoclonal antibody. The number of hepatocytes containing CAM 5.2-reactive cytokeratin inclusions was compared with serum TPS levels. MAIN RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS The vast majority of alcoholics (95%) showed increased (>100 units/liter) serum TPS levels. Serum TPS levels were significantly correlated with the number of hepatocyte cytokeratin inclusions. Serum TPS levels can predict hepatocyte cytokeratin expression in patients with alcoholic liver disease.

Abstract
This study examined the antimicrobial resistance of 1,278 invasive Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates from 41 Spanish laboratories participating in the European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System (EARSS) during 2000 and 2001. Twenty-nine laboratories participated during both years and provided 950 of the isolates. Each laboratory used its own susceptibility testing methods. External quality assessment was performed annually by each participating laboratory. Significant increases in penicillin and erythromycin resistance were observed between 2000 and 2001. This increase was particularly noticeable in isolates from the laboratories participating during both years and in isolates from children and elderly patients.

Abstract
Pupil filters can modify the three dimensional response of an optical system. In this paper, we study different pupil symmetries that produce a predictable image behavior. We show that different pupil-filters that satisfy certain symmetry conditions can produce axial responses which are either identical or mirror reflected. We also establish the differences in the symmetry properties between amplitude-only filters and phase-only filters. In particular, we are interested in phase filters that produce transverse superresolution with axial superresolution or high depth of focus.

Abstract
Murine monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against Vibrio cholerae toxin co-regulated pilus (TCP) were generated using conventional hybridoma procedures. Four hybridomas were obtained and two characterized. Hybridomas 10E10E1 and 4D6F9 secreted antibodies of the IgG2a and IgG1 isotypes, respectively, that reacted with a 24-kDa antigen corresponding to the product of the El Tor tcpA gene fused to a six Histidine tail. Additionally, MAbs produced by 4D6F9 selectively recognized the major pilin subunit (TcpA) of El Tor and O139 vibrios in western immunoblot, while MAbs from 10E10E1 also cross-reacted with classical TcpA. Furthermore, vibrios expressing TCP on their surface selectively inhibited binding of the antibodies secreted by both hybridomas to TcpA-coated microtiter plates. Thus, the MAbs reported in this work detected the structural subunit of the pilus either denatured or assembled on the bacterial surface.

OBJECTIVE To analyze the impact of HLA matching in both patient and graft evolution after LDLT. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty recipients underwent LDLT with follow-up of 3 to 30 months. HLA typing was performed on all donor-recipient pairs; class I antigens were typed using serological methods and class II loci (DRB1 and DQB1) using low-resolution molecular typing. Recipient sera were cross-matched with donor lymphocytes. Antigen mismatches were analyzed for each locus individually, for each class as a whole and for HLA class I immunogenic triplets according to HLA Matchmaker software. RESULTS Eighteen of 20 donor-recipient pairs were HLA haploidentical. All but one of the recipients had a negative cross-match before transplantation. While there was not a statistically significant correlation between HLA class I mismatches and the incidence of acute rejection episodes, HLA class II matching in DRB1 and DQB1 loci appeared to be associated with a higher incidence of acute rejection episodes after LDLT. Both host-versus-graft (HvG) and graft-versus-host (GvH) HLA class II compatibilities correlated with rejection episodes, especially for the GvH direction. CONCLUSIONS HLA class II matching for DRB1 and DQB1 loci appears to be associated with a higher incidence of acute rejection episodes after LDLT. In this study, mismatches in class I HLA antigens are not related to an higher incidence of acute rejection episodes nor other complications after LDLT. Further studies are needed to unveil the role of HLA matching in LDLT.

Abstract
This review presents an overview of Choline Kinase (ChoK) inhibitors with antiproliferative activity. The consideration of ChoK as a novel target for the development of new anticancer drugs is justified. The synthesis of several derivatives based on structural modifications of hemicholinium-3 (HC-3) is not accompanied by potentiation of the neurological toxicity of HC-3. The increment of both ChoK inhibitory and antiproliferative activities was successfully obtained by the two following changes: a) substitution of the oxazonium moiety of HC-3 by several aromatic heterocycles, and b) using the 1,2-ethylene(bisbenzyl) moiety instead of the 4,4'-biphenyl fragment. In an attempt to understand the ChoK inhibitory activity, a quantitative structure-activity relationship was developed. The QSAR equations have described the forces involved in quantitative terms. The electron characteristic of the substituent at position 4 of the heterocycle and the lipophilic character of the whole molecule were found to significantly affect the antitumour activity in compounds 17-95. Trispyridinium compounds 91-95 are more potent than the bispyridinium ones 87-89 as ChoK inhibitors. Nevertheless, 91-95 are less active than 87-89 as antiproliferative agents because the latter show better lipophilicities to cross the cytosolic membranes. Inhibition of the growth of human tumours in nude mice has been demonstrated: Antitumour activity of compound 64 against human HT-29 produced a decrease of up to 70% in the size of the tumour in nude mice. These results indicate that ChoK can be used as a general target for anticancer drug design against Ras-dependent tumourigenesis.

Abstract
In Europe, antimicrobial resistance of invasive pathogens has been monitored since 1998 by the European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System (EARSS). The goal of this study is to analyse the susceptibility data of invasive Escherichia coli collected by 27 Spanish laboratories in 2001. Each laboratory identified strains and tested their susceptibility using its own methods. To assess the comparability of susceptibility test results, a quality assurance exercise was performed. We report data from 1962 invasive isolates of E. coli: 1959 from blood and three from cerebrospinal fluid, corresponding to the same number of patients. Resistance to ampicillin, co-trimoxazole, ciprofloxacin and gentamicin was found in 58.46%, 32.91%, 17.19% and 6.39% of isolates, respectively. Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) production was detected in 30 strains (1.55%). Ciprofloxacin resistance was higher in isolates from men and in-patients than in those from women and out-patients (P < 0.001). Resistance to ampicillin and co-trimoxazole was more widespread in children than in adults: 70.37% versus 57.87% (P = 0.01) and 41.84% versus 32.53% (P = 0.05). Non-significant differences in resistance to fluoroquinolones were observed between isolates from children (11.1%) and adults (17.54%), despite the fact that fluoroquinolones are not administered to children. Significantly, resistance to non-beta-lactam antibiotics (co-trimoxazole, ciprofloxacin and gentamicin) was more prevalent in ampicillin-resistant strains and ESBL-producing strains than in ampicillin-susceptible strains and non-ESBL-producing strains. Multidrug resistance was present in 13.92% of isolates; the most prevalent phenotype was resistance to ampicillin, co-trimoxazole and ciprofloxacin, which was detected in 59.36% of multiresistant strains and in 8.22% of strains overall.
