The value of CT scanning in the diagnosis of tuberculous lymphadenitis of the neck

A case of tuberculous lymphadenitis of the neck is presented. The diagnosis was confirmed by surgery and pathologic section.

Properties of alkaline phosphatase of the halotolerant yeast Debaryomyces hansenii

The molecular weight of a partially purified alkaline phosphatase (orthophosphoric-monoester phosphohydrolase, EC 3.1.3.1) from the halotolerant yeast Debaryomyces hansenii was estimated to 110,000 by gel filtration. The isoelectric point determined by electrofocusing was at approximately pH 4.4. The enzyme had a broad specificity against phosphomonoesters and also attacked some acid anhydrides. Arsenate, molybdate, and orthophosphate acted as competitive inhibitors. Various metal-binding agents inhibited enzyme activity. A zinc addition almost completely reversed the EDTA inhibition. Magnesium stimulated enzyme activity and was required for maintenance of activity at high concentrations of Na+. Increasing glycerol concentration increased the value of the Michaelis constant (Km) and decreased the maximum velocity (V). Solutions equimolar in KCl and NaCl stimulated enzyme activity by increasing V, whereas the Km was almost unaffected by salt concentration. Enzyme extracted from cells cultured at low salinity was indistinguishable from that of cells grown in the presence of 2.7 M NaCl with respect to several criteria.

Kinetics of methoxyflurane biotransformation with reference to substrate inhibition

The kinetics of biotransformation of methoxyflurane by rat hepatic microsomes in vitro was studied. The rate of biotransformation as measured by analysis of metabolites continued to increase even at near-saturation concentrations of the anesthetic. Methoxyflurane biotransformation followed either an unbounded curve with empirical formula y = a ln(bx + 1) or an asymptotic curve with formula (see article) No substrate inhibition was observed. Total fluoride Vmax of 135.1 mmumol F-/mg protein/30' was increased to 931.9 by phenobarbital induction; free fluoride Vmax from 39.2 to 403.2. Thus, enzyme induction shifted biotransformation to the production of greater amounts of inorganic free fluoride metabolites than organic fluoride-containing metabolites. Phenobarbital induction caused qualitative as well as quantitative alteration in the biotransformation of methoxyflurane.

Motivational effects of hunger on time estimation and delay of gratification in obese and nonobese boys

Time estimates and ability to delay gratification of obese and nonobese boys were compared by a 2x2x2 factorial experiment in which hunger and edibility of incentives were manipulated. Hunger did not affect estimates of the obese boys, while it significantly shortened estimates made by the nonobese boys when the hunger drive was made either specific or nonspecific by varying incentive conditions. Although estimates of the nonobese boys were significantly shorter in the edible than nonedible incentive condition, edibility of incentives did not affect the estiamtes of the obese, suggesting a general rather than food-specific arousal in the nonobese and a general lack of response to internal cues in the obese. Immediate rewards were chosen significantly more often by obese than nonobese Ss. However, delay gratification in both obese and nonobese was unaffected by the hunger and edibility of incentive manipulations. This was attributed to uncontrolled cognitive variables.

Purification of alkaline phosphatase of the halotolerant yeast Debaryomyces hansenii

Alkaline phosphatase (orthophosphoric monoester phosphohydrolase, EC 3.1.3.1) of the halotolerant yeast Debaryomyces hansenii was purified by a procedure involving cell disruption, DNAase treatment, ethanol precipitation, gel filtration, chromatography on DEAE-Sephadex, and preparative polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The specific activity was increased 1250-fold as compared to the activity of cell free extract. The total recovery was 30%. Various modifications of the growth conditions had slight or no effect on the yield of enzyme.

Bilateral bundle-branch block. Clinical and electrocardiographic aspects

The electrocardiograms and salient clinical features of seven patients with electrocardiographic evidence of various types of bilateral bundle-branch block (BBBB) have been presented. When the complexes change in form and the P-R interval varies, the mechanisms are usually best interpreted by using the concepts of first degree, second degree, and third degree bundle-branch block with or without block in the higher conduction system. The etiology of BBBB in many cases is idiopathic fibrosis of both bundles. The diagnosis of BBBB by ECG is important because of its relation to the subsequent development of complete heart block or Adams-Stokes syndrome, or both. In this series five of seven patients with BBBB had Adams-Stokes syndrome and three of seven had complete heart block.
