Abstract
1. A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), c.*77C>G, was found in the 3' UTR of the chicken LPIN1 gene by DNA sequencing. In total, 860 chickens were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) in a F2 resource population obtained by crossing F0 Gushi chickens and Anka broilers, and the associations of this polymorphism with chicken growth, carcass, muscle fibre traits and serum biochemistry parameters were analysed. 2. Significant associations were found between the polymorphism and breast muscle fibre diameter (FDB). Comparison of the different genotypes of c.*77C>G in the F2 resource population showed that the GG genotype had significantly higher values than that of CG genotype in FDB. c.*77C>G was predicted to cause changes to multiple microRNA (miRNA) binding sites. But the total mRNA level of chicken LPIN1, LPIN1-;α and LPIN1-β in liver and muscle tissues did not show significant difference among GG, CG and CC genotypes, respectively. 3. The results suggested that chicken LPIN1 has a potential effect on muscle fibre development, but no effect on other studied traits.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchor attachment protein 1 (GPAA1) and its significance in patients with colorectal cancer. Fifty-two patients with primary colorectal cancer were included in this study. GPAA1 expression was detected by immunohistochemistry, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, and Western blot analysis. A cell invasion assay was performed by the transwell method. The interacting proteins of GPAA1 were detected by co-immunoprecipitation and matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/TOF-MS). The expression of GPAA1 mRNA and protein in primary colorectal tumor tissues and liver metastasis tissues was significantly higher than that in normal mucosa tissues (P < 0.01). The number of highly expressing GPAA1 cells penetrating the Matrigel membrane was significantly higher than that of mildly expressing GPAA1 cells (P < 0.05). The results of co-immunoprecipitation and MALDI-TOF/TOF-MS confirmed the identity of the protein. GPAA1 is highly expressed in patients with colorectal cancer, which indicates that it might play an important role in the proliferation, invasion, and metastasis of colorectal cancer.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the changes of Th1/Th2 cytokines in immunocompetent patients with pulmonary cryptococcosis (PC). Twenty immunocompetent patients with PC were identified by histopathological examination and were enrolled in the study along with the age- and gender-matched healthy controls. The serum concentrations of interferon-γ (IFN-γ), interleukin-4 (IL-4), and interleukin-12 (IL-12) were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in both groups were isolated and incubated with or without recombinant human IL-12 (rhIL-12) for 48 h, and the concentrations of IFN-g and IL-4 in the supernatant were measured by ELISA. Serum IFN-γ levels were greatly decreased in the patients compared with control groups (P < 0.01), whereas no significant difference was observed in serum IL-4 and IL-12 levels. The concentrations of IFN-γ and IL-4 in the supernatant of PBMCs without the stimulation of rhIL-12 showed no differences between the two groups. Treatment with rhIL-12 stimulated the release of IFN-γ, but not IL-4, into the supernatant of PBMCs in both groups, with a lower increase observed in the patients (4.3-fold) compared to that of controls (7.9-fold) (P < 0.01). Serum IFN-γ levels may be dampened in immunocompetent patients with PC with no significant changes in serum IL-4 and IL-12 levels. The deficiency in the response to IL-12 stimulation of Th1 cells may be one of the underlying mechanisms for the decline in serum IFN-γ levels.

Abstract
A dedicated analytical scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) with dual energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) detectors has been designed for complementary high performance imaging as well as high sensitivity elemental analysis and mapping of biological structures. The performance of this new design, based on a Hitachi HD-2300A model, was evaluated using a variety of biological specimens. With three imaging detectors, both the surface and internal structure of cells can be examined simultaneously. The whole-cell elemental mapping, especially of heavier metal species that have low cross-section for electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), can be faithfully obtained. Optimization of STEM imaging conditions is applied to thick sections as well as thin sections of biological cells under low-dose conditions at room and cryogenic temperatures. Such multimodal capabilities applied to soft/biological structures usher a new era for analytical studies in biological systems.

Abstract
Hybrid polymer-metal nanospheres are potential nano-sized medical devices that can provide multi-functions such as medical imaging and drug/biomolecule delivery. Gold nanoparticle-based hybrid nanospheres are particularly attractive owing to the unique optical and electronic properties that they possess. The polymer in hybrid nanospheres can be tasked for cancer cell targeting, DNA delivering etc. In the current investigation, a simple one-pot synthesis method was developed for producing folic acid-chitosan-capped gold (Au@CS-FA) nanospheres. These nanospheres consisted of a flower-like gold nanoparticle core and a cross-linked folic acid (FA)-conjugated chitosan shell. During the synthesis of Au@CS-FA nanospheres, FA-conjugated chitosan molecules acted as a reductant for gold and also as a structure-directing agent for the formation of highly branched gold nanoparticles. The evolution of Au@CS-FA nanospheres during their manufacture was studied using various analytical techniques and the mechanism of formation and growth was proposed. The Au@CS-FA nanospheres exhibited high-surface-enhanced Raman scattering which could be utilised for imaging at the single molecule level. The biopolymer shell was functionalised with -NH(2) and -COOH groups, which could be readily conjugated with macromolecules, peptides, nucleotides etc. for potentially wide applications of Au@CS-FA nanospheres in the medical field.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE. To determine the prevalence of psychiatric morbidity, identify correlates of psychiatric morbidities, and evaluate the effectiveness of the 12-item General Health Questionnaire as a screening tool for psychiatric morbidity in Chinese patients infected with chronic hepatitis B. METHODS. This cross-sectional study was conducted in a local public specialist outpatient infectious disease clinic from October 2008 to June 2009, in which a total of 160 patients were randomly selected. Psychiatric diagnoses were established by using the Chinese-Bilingual Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM-IV (Axis I Disorders). Scores for the General Health Questionnaire were compared against the psychiatric diagnoses. RESULTS. Among 149 patients, the respective point prevalence of overall psychiatric disorders, depressive disorders, and anxiety disorders was 32%, 16%, and 14%. A family history of psychiatric disorder and absence of knowledge of mode of hepatitis B virus transmission were identified as being associated with current psychiatric disorders, current depressive disorders, and current anxiety disorders. Absence of a confidant was an independent factor for current depressive disorders and use of herbal medicine in the previous month was an independent factor for current anxiety disorders. CONCLUSIONS. Psychiatric disorders are common in Chinese patients with chronic hepatitis B. Identifying associated factors and using the General Health Questionnaire as a screening tool are useful for identifying patients with psychiatric disorders in an infectious disease clinic.

Abstract
Insulin-like growth factor-binding protein-5 (IGFBP-5) is one of the six members of IGFBP family, important for cell growth, apoptosis and other IGF-stimulated signaling pathways. In order to explore the significance of IGFBP-5 in cells of the Inner Mongolian Cashmere goat (Capra hircus), IGFBP-5 gene complementary DNA (cDNA) was amplified by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) from the animal’s fetal fibroblasts and tissue-specific expression analysis was performed by semi-quantitative RT-PCR. The gene is 816 base pairs (bp) in length and includes the complete open reading frame, encoding 271 amino acids (GenBank accession number JF720883). The full cDNA nucleotide sequence has a 99% identity with sheep, 98% with cattle and 95% with human. The amino acids sequence shares identity with 99%, 99% and 99%, respectively. The bioinformatics analysis showed that IGFBP-5 has an insulin growth factor-binding protein homologues (IB) domain and a thyroglobulin type-1 (TY) domain, four protein kinase C phosphorylation sites, five casein kinase II phosphorylation sites, three prenyl group binding sites (CaaX box). The IGFBP-5 gene was expressed in all the tested tissues including testis, brain, liver, lung, mammary gland, spleen, and kidney, suggesting that IGFBP-5 plays an important role in goat cells.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Certain anesthetics exhibit neurotoxicity in the brains of immature but not mature animals. γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA), the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the adult brain, is excitatory on immature neurons via its action at the GABAA receptor, depolarizing the membrane potential and inducing a cytosolic Ca2+ increase ([Ca2+]i), because of a reversed transmembrane chloride gradient. Recent experimental data from several rodent studies have demonstrated that exposure to isoflurane during an initial phase causes neuronal excitotoxicity and apoptosis. GABAA receptor-mediated synaptic voltage-dependent calcium channels' (VDCCs) overactivation and Ca2+ influx are involved in these neural changes. METHODS We monitored [Ca2+]i using Fluo-4 AM fluorescence imaging. Using whole-cell patch clamp techniques, IVDCC (voltage-dependent calcium channel currents) were recorded from primary cultures of rat hippocampal neurons (5-day culture) exposed to isoflurane. To further investigate the neurotoxicity of high cytosolic-free calcium after isoflurane in a dose- and time-dependent manner, the possibility of increased caspase-3 levels was evaluated by Western blot and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Statistical significance was assessed using the Student t test or 1-way analysis of variance followed by the Tukey post hoc test. RESULTS Under control conditions, isoflurane enhanced the GABA-induced [Ca2+]i increase in a dose-dependent manner. Dantrolene and nicardipine markedly inhibited this enhancement mediated by isoflurane. Moreover, in Ca2+-free media, pretreatment with isoflurane did not show any influence on the caffeine-induced increase of [Ca2+]i. Similarly, using whole-cell recording, isoflurane increased the peak amplitude of IVDCC in the cultured neurons from rat hippocampus by depolarization pulses. Isoflurane (0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1 minimum alveolar concentration [MAC]) potentiated IVDCC peak current amplitude by 109.11%±9.03%, 120.56%±11.46%, 141.33%±13.87%, and 146.78%±15.87%, respectively. To analyze variation in protein levels, the effect of treatments with isoflurane on caspase-3 activity was dose- and time-dependent, reaching a maximal caspase-3 activity after exposure to 1 MAC for 6 hours (P<0.001). However, in the mRNA levels, hippocampal caspase-3 mRNA levels began to be significantly increased in isoflurane-treated developing rat hippocampal neurons after 6 hours of exposure to 0.25 MAC isoflurane (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS Isoflurane-mediated enhancement of GABA-triggered [Ca2+]i release results from membrane depolarization with subsequent activation of VDCCs and further Ca2+-induced Ca2+ release from the ryanodine-sensitizing Ca2+ store. An increase in [Ca2+]i, caused by activation of the GABAA receptor and opening of VDCCs, is necessary for isoflurane-induced calcium overload of immature rat hippocampal neurons, which may be involved in the mechanism of an isoflurane-induced neurotoxic effect in the developing rodent brain.

Abstract
Single point diamond turning (SPDT) is highly controllable and versatile in producing axially symmetric forms, non-axially-symmetric forms, microstructured surfaces, and free forms. However, the fine SPDT marks left in the surface limit its performance, and they are difficult to reduce or eliminate. It is unpractical for traditional methods to remove the fine marks without destroying their forms, especially for the aspheres and free forms. This paper introduces abrasive jet polishing (AJP) for the posttreatment of diamond-turned surfaces to remove the periodic microstructures. Samples of diamond-turned electroless nickel plated plano mirror were used in the experiments. One sample with an original surface roughness of more than 400 nm decreased to 4 nm after two iterations abrasive jet polishing; the surface roughness of another sample went from 3.7 nm to 1.4 nm after polishing. The periodic signatures on both of the samples were removed entirely after polishing. Contrastive experimental research was carried out on electroless nickel mirror with magnetorheological finishing, computer controlled optical surfacing, and AJP. The experimental results indicate that AJP is more appropriate in removing the periodic SPDT marks. Also, a figure maintaining experiment was carried out with the AJP process; the uniform polishing process shows that the AJP process can remove the periodic turning marks without destroying the original form.

Abstract
From the spring of 2003 to the summer of 2006, sweet cherry (Prunus avium) trees in orchards near Lvshun City, in the northeast People's Republic of China, had symptoms suggestive of those caused by Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV; genus Cucumovirus, family Bromoviridae). Symptoms included chlorotic patches or mottling on leaves that were also deformed (4). In April 2006, 20 symptomatic leaves sampled from 10 trees in each of four orchards were assayed for CMV with a CMV-specific antiserum (Agdia Inc., Elkhart, IN) in a double-antibody sandwich-ELISA. Of the 80 symptomatic leaf samples, 27 tested positive for the presence of CMV. CMV was detected in all four orchards, within which incidence varied between 0.5 and 4%. Viral nucleoproteins were purified by differential centrifugation and sucrose density gradient fractionation from symptomatic leaves. Transmission electron microscopy of nucleoproteins revealed isometric particles approximately 30 nm in diameter, which is also typical of CMV. Total RNA was also extracted from 100 mg of symptomatic tissue following a Trizol-based protocol (1). A reverse transcriptase-PCR assay with nucleocapsid gene-specific primers was then used (forward primer 5'-ATGGCGACGTCCTCGTTCA-3'; reverse primer 5'-CATCGTTCCCTTCAAAATAG-3') (3). A PCR product of approximately 633 bp was obtained. The PCR product was cloned and sequenced. The sequence (GenBank Accession No. HM996559) had 95% identity with the RNA-1 sequence from CMV 'Fny' strain in GenBank (Accession No. D00356.1). The People's Republic of China is one of the major producers of sweet cherry in Asia and the spread of CMV in China may cause significant economic losses. Thus, virus-infected material should not be used for propagation and surveys should be undertaken to determine if the aphid vectors capable of transmitting CMV are present (2).To our knowledge, this is the first report of CMV occurring in sweet cherry orchards in the People's Republic of China. Abstract
In single crystals of Eu(1-x)Sr(x)Fe(2-y)Co(y)As(2), Co doping suppresses spin-density wave (SDW) ordering and induces a superconducting transition. A resistivity reentrance due to the antiferromagnetic ordering of Eu(2+) spins is observed, indicating the competition between antiferromagnetism (AFM) and superconductivity (SC). It is striking that the resistivity reentrance can be completely suppressed by a small magnetic field due to a field-induced metamagnetic transition from AFM to ferromagnetism (FM). The resistivity reentrance can also be suppressed by the substitution of Eu(2+) ions with nonmagnetic Ba(2+)/Sr(2+) to completely destroy the AFM ordering. These results indicate that the AFM order appears destructive to SC, while FM can coexist with the superconductivity. Further we find that magnon excitation exists in AFM ordering and can be suppressed by an applied field. Coexistence of SC from the FeAs layer and the inner field produced by the ferromagnetic Eu(2+) layer suggest a possible p-wave component in the superconducting order parameter.

Abstract
Root anatomy, radial oxygen loss (ROL) and zinc (Zn) uptake and tolerance in mangrove plants were investigated using seedlings of Aegiceras corniculatum, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza and Rhizophora stylosa. The results revealed that B. gymnorrhiza, which possessed the 'tightest barrier' in ROL spatial patterns among the three species studied, took up the least Zn and showed the highest Zn tolerance. Furthermore, zinc significantly decreased the ROL of all three plants by inhibition of root permeability, which included an obvious thickening of outer cortex and significant increases of lignification in cell walls. The results of SEM X-ray microanalysis further confirmed that such an inducible, low permeability of roots was likely an adaptive strategy to metal stress by direct prevention of excessive Zn entering into the root. The present study proposes new evidence of structural adaptive strategy on metal tolerance by mangrove seedlings.

Abstract
The in-plane resistivity rho and thermal conductivity kappa of the FeAs-based superconductor KFe2As2 single crystal were measured down to 50 mK. We observe non-Fermi-liquid behavior rho(T) approximately T{1.5} at H{c{2}}=5 T, and the development of a Fermi liquid state with rho(T) approximately T{2} when further increasing the field. This suggests a field-induced quantum critical point, occurring at the superconducting upper critical field H{c{2}}. In zero field, there is a large residual linear term kappa{0}/T, and the field dependence of kappa_{0}/T mimics that in d-wave cuprate superconductors. This indicates that the superconducting gaps in KFe2As2 have nodes, likely d-wave symmetry. Such a nodal superconductivity is attributed to the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations near the quantum critical point.

Abstract
We report the detailed phase diagram and anomalous transport properties of Fe-based high-T_{c} superconductors SmFeAsO1-xFx. It is found that superconductivity emerges at x approximately 0.07, and optimal doping takes place in the x approximately 0.20 sample with the highest T_{c} approximately 54 K. T_{c} increases monotonically with doping; the anomaly in resistivity from structural phase or spin-density-wave order is rapidly suppressed, suggesting a quantum critical point around x approximately 0.14. As manifestations, a linear temperature dependence of the resistivity shows up at high temperatures in the x<0.14 regime but at low temperatures just above T_{c} in the x>0.14 regime; a drop in carrier density evidenced by a pronounced rise in the Hall coefficient is observed below the temperature of the anomaly peak in resistivity. A scaling behavior is observed between the Hall angle and temperature: cottheta_{H} proportional, variantT;{1.5} for all samples with different x in SmFeAsO1-xFx system.

Abstract
A total of 50 weaning pigs (16 d of age; 4.72 +/- 0.23 kg of BW) were selected to investigate the effect of dietary chito-oligosaccharide (COS) supplementation on growth performance, fecal shedding of Escherichia coli and Lactobacillus, apparent digestibility, and small intestinal morphology. Pigs housed in individual metabolic cages were assigned randomly to 5 treatments (n = 10), including 1 basal diet (control), 3 diets with COS supplementation (100, 200, and 400 mg/kg), and 1 diet with chlortetracycline (CTC) supplementation (80 mg/kg). Fresh fecal samples were collected to evaluate shedding of E. coli and Lactobacillus on d 0, 7, 14, and 21 postweaning. Fresh fecal samples collected from each cage from d 19 to 21 were stored frozen for determination of apparent total tract digestibility. On d 21, all pigs were killed to collect the middle sections of the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum for determination of mucosa morphology. Supplementation of COS at 100 and 200 mg/kg and supplementation of CTC improved (P < 0.05) overall ADG, ADFI, and G:F in comparison with the control. Supplementation of COS at 200 mg/kg as well as supplementation of CTC increased (P < 0.05) apparent total tract digestibility of DM, GE, CP, crude fat, Ca, and P, whereas COS at 100 mg/kg increased (P < 0.05) the digestibility of DM, Ca, and P in comparison with the control diet. Pigs receiving diets supplemented with COS or CTC had a decreased (P < 0.05) incidence of diarrhea and decreased diarrhea scores compared with control pigs. Fecal samples from pigs receiving diets supplemented with COS had greater (P < 0.05) Lactobacillus counts than those from control pigs and pigs receiving diets supplemented with CTC on d 14 and 21. However, supplementation of COS at 200 mg/kg and supplementation of CTC decreased (P < 0.05) E. coli counts in the feces on d 21 compared with the control diet. Dietary supplementation of COS at 200 mg/kg and of CTC increased (P < 0.05) the villus height and villus:crypt ratio at the ileum and jejunum, and COS at 100 mg/kg also increased (P < 0.05) the villus height in the ileum compared with the control diet. The current results indicated that dietary supplementation of COS at 100 and 200 mg/kg enhanced growth performance by increasing apparent digestibility, decreasing the incidence of diarrhea, and improving small intestinal morphology.

Abstract
The thermal conductivity kappa of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeIrIn5 was measured as a function of temperature down to T(c)/8, for current directions parallel (J parallel c) and perpendicular (J parallel a) to the tetragonal c axis. For J parallel a, a sizable residual linear term kappa(0)/T is observed, as previously, which confirms the presence of line nodes in the superconducting gap. For J parallel c, on the other hand, kappa/T-->0 as T-->0. The resulting precipitous decline in the anisotropy ratio kappa(c)/kappa(a) at low temperature rules out a gap structure with line nodes running along the c axis, such as the d-wave state favored for CeCoIn5, and instead points to a hybrid gap of E(g) symmetry.

Abstract
Understanding pollutant transformation in sewers is important in controlling odor emission from pressure mains as well as in assessing organic pollutant removal capacity of gravity sewers. Sewer process models have thus been developed to quantify the pollutant transformation processes under various sewer conditions. The quantification largely depends on model parameter values, in particular the kinetic and stoichiometric parameters related to microbial activities. The current approaches not only involve a large amount of experimental work but also may induce significant errors when microbial reactions cannot be differentiated effectively during the experiments. Therefore, this study is aimed at developing a new method that can reduce experimental work significantly. The proposed method utilizes a genetic algorithm (GA) to enable the determination with a single set of batch experiments. To study the feasibility of the proposed method, a set of 72-hr batch experiments was first conducted for determining the parameters of a sewer model developed in this study, which adopted a full version of the International Water Association (IWA) Activated Sludge Model No. 3 (ASM3) to describe the microbial activities in sewers. The results were then verified with two different sets of the batch experiments. Furthermore, dynamic variation data of dissolved oxygen level were collected at the outlet of a 1.5-km gravity sewer to validate the determined parameters. All the results showed that the proposed parameter determination method is effective.

Abstract
The in-plane thermal conductivity kappa of the layered superconductor CuxTiSe2 was measured down to temperatures as low as Tc/40, at x=0.06 near where the charge-density-wave order vanishes. The absence of a residual linear term at T-->0 is strong evidence for conventional s-wave superconductivity in this system. This is further supported by the slow magnetic field dependence, also consistent with a single gap, of uniform magnitude across the Fermi surface. Comparison with the closely related material NbSe2, where the superconducting gap is 3 times larger on the Nb 4d band than on the Se 4p band, suggests that in Cu0.06TiSe2 the Se 4p band is below the Fermi level and Cu doping into the Ti 3d band is responsible for the superconductivity.

Abstract
Here is described a modified technique of palatomaxillary reconstruction that combines the use of a free vascularized bone graft by osteotomy, soft-tissue flap, zygomatic implant as an anchorage and two standard implants simultaneously. The patient presented with deformity in the left face after subtotal maxillectomy (Brown 2b classification). Preoperative work up was performed by a rapid prototyping model using computer-aided manufacturing technology. The purpose of this model is to provide accurate measurements of the defect. The palatomaxillary three-dimensional buttress system can be managed by orienting the bone graft vertically and horizontally. Reconstruction of the palatomaxillary defect was successfully accomplished in a single surgical procedure. Dental implant restoration achieved good osseointegration without any significant resorption. This new modification represents a significant contribution to palatomaxillary reconstruction using zygomatic implants as anchorage.

Abstract
Iterative reconstruction methods such as the expectation maximization maximum likelihood (EMML) method can be accelerated by using a rescaled block-iterative (RBI) algorithm. It was demonstrated that the space-alternating generalized expectation-maximization (SAGE) algorithm is superior to the EMML due to the following facts: (1) The hidden data spaces can be appropriately chosen and then be used in SAGE algorithm to speed up the convergence rate. (2) SAGE algorithm updates the parameters sequentially which makes its M-step to be treated more easily. In this paper, we present a novel algorithm that combines the RBI algorithm with SAGE algorithm. The convergence property of RBI-SAGE is discussed, and the image quality is assessed with mean absolute error and chi-square error. The experimental results show that the proposed method is more effective than the SAGE algorithm even if the projection data includes statistic noise.
