Ammon's horn sclerosis on pneumoencephalotomography

Fourteen cases with psychomotor seizure were examined by pneumoencephalotomographic technique. In all cases uni- or bilateral changes of the inferior horn were found: diverticular dilatation of subiculum, lowering and irregularity of the floor, reduction of width, and deformation of digitation. These findings correlated well with the autopsy reports. In most cases, EEG findings also correlated.

Basiparallel cut by pneumoencephalotomography and cerebellar atrophy

The basiparallel cut is a nearly horizontal slice of the posterior fossa used in air study and the structures are observed on a plane parallel to the clivus. Total shrinkage of the cerebellum, with or without fourth ventricle dilatation, was found in cases of olivopontocerebellar atrophy, some intoxications, and a few senile subjects. Some atrophy of paleocerebellar portions was seen in Holmes-type degeneration. Another pattern was symmetric shrinkage of neocerebellar lobules and relatively specific for the cases of 'multiple system atrophy' such as progressive supranuclear palsy, striatonigral degeneration, Marie's ataxia, etc. Loss of the superior cerebellar peduncle was clearly demonstrated in this view.

Electron microscopic observation of the liver in portal hypertension following chronic exposure to vinyl chloride monomer

Two patients with portal hypertension following chronic exposure to vinyl chloride monomer were studied histologically and ultrastructurally. Both cases showed non-cirrhotic portal hypertension accompanied by esophageal varices and splenomegaly. They proved hepatic fibrosis with conventional microscope. Ultrastructurally, there were large amounts of small myelin-like lamellar materials with electron density and remarkable proliferation and vesiculation of smooth endoplasmic reticulum in the cytoplasms of hepatocytes. The widened Disse's spaces, were the sinusoidal lining cells were arranged in multilayers, were plugged by collagenous fiber bundles. The finding may be consistent with the development of portal hypertension.

A prospective survey on chest malignancies following multiple fluroscopies during artificial pneumothorax therapy for pulmonary tuberculosis

Patients with pulmonary tuberculosis treated in 4 sanatoria in Niigata prefecture during the period from 1941 to 1961 were followed up. Of 2,756 patients, 1,193 responded and sent us effective information. However, 1,224 did not come into contact because of changed and unknown adress, 326 did not respond, and 13 were omitted because of incomplete answers. Of 1,193 effective responders, 568 had been treated by artificial pneumothorax (the pneumothorax group), and 552 had been treated by the other measures than pneumothorax (the control group). There were 65 deaths in the pneumothorax, group, and 40 deaths in the control group. No deaths from chest malignancies were reported in the pneumothorax group, while 4 chest malignancies in the control. In this survey, no evidence of increased frequency of chest malignancies including leukemia following multiple fluoroscopies during artificial pneumothorax was detected.

Glycylprolyl beta-naphthylamidase activities in serum, liver and kidney of rats in chronic carbon tetrachloride intoxication

Following chronic carbon tetrachloride intoxication in rats, the activity of glycylprolyl beta-naphthylamidase increased in serum and decreased in liver, suggesting that the enzyme is released from liver in hepatic injury. In contrast, the enzyme activity in kidney did not decrease when the enzyme level in liver decreased significantly.

The structure of two new depsidones from the lichen Parmelia notata

Two new depsidones, 4-O-methylhypoprotocetraric acid [l'-carboxy-2'- hydroxy-4-methoxy-3,3',6,6'-tetramethyldepsidone, (1)] and notatio acid [1'- carboxy-2'-hydroxy-4-methoxy-3,6,6'-trimethyldepsidone, (2)], have been isolated from the Australian lichen Parmelia notata Kurok and characterized.
