Performance on cognitive tasks in predicting the behavioral competences in the institutionalized elderly

The questions under consideration concern quantitative and qualitative aspects of the relationship between cognitive abilities and behavioral competences in the elderly institution residents. The former was assessed by an array of five cognitive measures, namely, two Piagetian tasks, Set Test, WAIS Vocabulary and Digit Span subtests and the WMS Associative Learning subtest and the latter by the Stockton Geriatric Rating Scale (SGRS). The overall variance in common between the two sets of variables was approximately 70 percent. Of the cognitive tasks, those most highly predictive of behavioral competences were the Piagetian tasks, Set Test and, to a lesser extent, WAIS Vocabulary subtest. Of the four SGRS factors, that predicted to the greatest extent was apathy, with physical disability to a lesser extent.

Do potential people have moral rights?

By a potential person I shall mean an entity which is not now a person but which is capable of developing into a person, given certain biologically and/or technologically possible conditions. This is admittedly a narrower sense than some would attach to the term ‘potential'. After all, people of the twenty-fifth century, if such there will be, are in some sense potential people now, even though the specific biological entities from which they will develop, i.e. the particular gametes or concepti, do not yet exist. For there do exist, in the reproductive capacities of people now living and in the earth's resources, conditions adequate to produce these future people eventually, provided of course that various possible catastrophes are avoided. Indeed, in some sense of ‘potential’ there have been countless billions of potential people from the beginning of time. But I am concerned not with such remote potentialities but with currently existing entities that are capable of developing into people.

The wellness process

Wellness is viewed as a continually evolving and changing process related to the developmental stages of man and the individual's completion of certain developmental tasks. Wellness differs from good health; it is a measurable process in which individuals actively participate to become more healthy. The index proposed here for assessing or measuring wellness is based upon the individual's completion of the minimal wellness tasks appropriate to his developmental stage.

The role of ethics in pediatrics

Medical ethics has increased in importance in medical education and practice as a consequence of advances in definitive treatment of patients. Most problems in ethics related to medicine have certain common denominators. Medical scientists and practitioners frequently disclaim any ethical absolutes or consider as important only nonmoral consequences rather than ethical principles such as justice, noninjury, truth-telling, etc. Failure to differentiate moral from nonmoral decisions as well as differences in level of moral reasoning also account for substantial differences in analyzing a given clinical problem. Finally, individual moral policy may be rendered ineffective because of institutional policies that result from purely pragmatic considerations.
