Abstract
The production of deuterons and antideuterons in the transverse momentum range 1.1<p(T)<4.3 GeV/c at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at square root of s(NN)=200 GeV has been studied by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC. A coalescence analysis, comparing the deuteron and antideuteron spectra with that of proton and antiproton, has been performed. The coalescence probability is equal for both deuterons and antideuterons and it increases as a function of p(T), which is consistent with an expanding collision zone. Comparing (anti)proton yields, p /p=0.73+/-0.01, with (anti)deuteron yields, d /d=0.47+/-0.03, we estimate that n /n=0.64+/-0.04. The nucleon phase space density is estimated from the coalescence measurement.

Abstract
The PHENIX experiment has measured midrapidity transverse momentum spectra (0.4<p(T)<4.0 GeV/c) of single electrons as a function of centrality in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. Contributions from photon conversions and Dalitz decays of light neutral mesons are measured by introducing a thin (1.7% X0) converter into the PHENIX acceptance and are statistically removed. The subtracted nonphotonic electron spectra are primarily due to the semileptonic decays of hadrons containing heavy quarks, mainly charm at lower p(T). For all centralities, the charm production cross section is found to scale with the nuclear overlap function, T(AA). For minimum-bias collisions the charm cross section per binary collision is N(cc )/T(AA)=622+/-57(stat)+/-160(syst) microb.

Abstract
We report on charged hadron production in deuteron-gold reactions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. Our measurements in the deuteron direction cover 1.4<eta<2.2, referred to as forward rapidity, and in the gold direction -2.0<eta<-1.4, referred to as backward rapidity, and a transverse momentum range p(T)=0.5-4.0 GeV/c. We compare the relative yields for different deuteron-gold collision centrality classes. We observe a suppression relative to binary collision scaling at forward rapidity, sensitive to low momentum fraction (x) partons in the gold nucleus, and an enhancement at backward rapidity, sensitive to high momentum fraction partons in the gold nucleus.

Abstract
Intramuscular interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC-IM) play a critical role in enteric neural regulation of the circular muscle layer in the stomach, but no studies have been performed on the longitudinal layer. Kit immunohistochemistry was used to examine ICC-IM in the longitudinal muscle layer of the murine corpus and antrum, and it revealed marked heterogeneity in the distribution of ICC-IM in longitudinal muscles. In the corpus, ICC-IM were found along the greater curvature near the fundus. ICC-IM decreased in density in the circumferential axis toward the lesser curvature and in the longitudinal axis toward the antrum. ICC-IM were absent from the longitudinal layer of the antrum. Double labelling with markers for specific classes of enteric motor neurones revealed that cholinergic and nitrergic motor neurones formed close contacts with ICC-IM in the corpus but not in the antrum. Enteric nerve stimulation evoked prominent cholinergic excitatory and nitrergic inhibitory responses in longitudinal muscles of the corpus, but not in the antrum of wild-type animals. Cholinergic and nitrergic nerves were also present in W/W(V) mice, but functional innervation of the longitudinal muscle layer by these nerves in the corpus and antrum were absent. The data show that cholinergic and nitrergic neurotransmission only occurs in the gastric longitudinal layer in regions where ICC-IM are present. In regions, such as the corpus, where ICC-IM are common, robust neural responses are present, but the reduced density of ICC-IM near the lesser curvature and in the distal stomach leads to reduced neural regulation in these gastric regions.

Abstract
Cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (Cdk5), a serine/threonine kinase that displays kinase activity predominantly in neurons, is activated by two non-cyclin activators, p35 or p39. Here, we report a physical and functional interaction between the Cdk5/p35 complex and mouse Sds3 (mSds3), an essential component of mSin3-histone deacetylase (HDAC) co-repressor complex. mSds3 binds to p35 both in vitro and in vivo, enabling active Cdk5 to phosphorylate mSds3 at serine 228. A mSds3 S228A mutant retained mSin3 binding activity, but its dimerization was not greatly enhanced by p35 when compared with wild type. Notably, p35 overexpression augmented mSds3-mediated transcriptional repression in vitro. Interestingly, mutational studies revealed that the ability of exogenous mSds3 to rescue cell growth and viability in mSds3 null cells correlates with its ability to be phosphorylated by Cdk5. The identification of mSds3 as a substrate of the Cdk5/p35 complex reveals a new regulatory mechanism in controlling the mSin3-HDAC transcriptional repressor activity and provides a new potential therapeutic means to inhibit specific HDAC activities in disease.

Abstract
We present a measurement of the double longitudinal spin asymmetry in inclusive pi(0) production in polarized proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=200 GeV. The data were taken at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider with average beam polarizations of 0.27. The measurements are the first in a program to study the longitudinal spin structure of the proton, using strongly interacting probes, at collider energies. The asymmetry is presented for transverse momenta 1-5 GeV/c at midrapidity, where next-to-leading-order perturbative quantum chromodynamic (NLO pQCD) calculations well describe the unpolarized cross section. The observed asymmetry is small and is compared to a NLO pQCD calculation with a range of polarized gluon distributions.

Bose-Einstein correlations of charged pion pairs in Au + Au collisions at square root sNN = 200 GeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2004; 93:152302. Abstract
Bose-Einstein correlations of identically charged pion pairs were measured by the PHENIX experiment at midrapidity in Au + Au collisions at square root s(NN)=200 GeV. The Bertsch-Pratt radius parameters were determined as a function of the transverse momentum of the pair and as a function of the centrality of the collision. Using the standard core-halo partial Coulomb fits, and a new parametrization which constrains the Coulomb fraction as determined from the unlike-sign pion correlation, the ratio R(out)/R(side) is within 0.8-1.1 for 0.25< <k(T)> <1.2 GeV/c. The centrality dependence of all radii is well described by a linear scaling in N(1/3)(part), and R(out)/R(side) for <k(T)> approximately 0.45 GeV/c is approximately constant at unity as a function of centrality.

Abstract
Event-by-event fluctuations of the average transverse momentum of produced particles near midrapidity have been measured by the PHENIX Collaboration in square root of (sNN)=200 GeV Au+Au, and p+p collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The fluctuations are observed to be in excess of the expectation for statistically independent particle emission for all centralities. The excess fluctuations exhibit a dependence on both the centrality of the collision and on the pT range over which the average is calculated. Both the centrality and pT dependence can be well reproduced by a simulation of random particle production with the addition of contributions from hard-scattering processes.

Abstract
Many clinical procedures introduce holes into thin tissues that are typically under multiaxial stresses and finite strains. Such incisions change the stresses and strains from their homeostatic values, which may induce cells to alter their orientation and cytoskeletal organization as well as to migrate, proliferate, change their synthesis of matrix, or even to enter the cell death cycle. To correlate such changes in cellular activity with changes in the mechanics, we need solutions for the native and the perturbed boundary value problems. Such problems will often be complex and require a finite element solution; weak solutions should be evaluated independently, however, at least for special cases. Herein, we present a numerical solution of the governing nonlinear ordinary differential equation for the special case of stress redistribution due to the introduction of a circular hole into a finitely deformed, Fung-type, circular membrane that exhibits a cylindrical orthotropy. Among other results, we show that the anisotropy plays an increasingly greater role as the size of the hole becomes smaller, which is of course a goal of minimally invasive procedures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Soon after its introduction, laparoscopic adrenalectomy (LA) became the procedure of choice in the surgical management of most adrenal tumors. The aim of this study was to assess the outcome and learning curve of the first 100 cases operated by the same surgical team. METHODS Retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data of 100 consecutive LAs was performed. The parameters studied were indication for surgery, side and length of operation, intra- and postoperative complications, size of tumor, conversion to open surgery, final diagnosis, and length of stay. RESULTS Between 1996 and 2002, 100 LAs were performed in 90 patients. The procedures included 45 left, 35 right, and 10 bilateral resections for pheochromocytoma (29), Cushings syndrome (27), Conns syndrome (16), nonfunctioning adenoma (13), and others (5). Mean tumor size was 4.16 cm (range, 0.3-11). Overall major morbidity occurred in eight patients (9%); there was one mortality due to cerebrovascular accident in an elderly patient. Five cases (5%) were converted to open surgery. The mean length of stay for the whole group was 4.7 days (range, 2-25). In order to assess the learning curve, procedures were divided into three, equal consecutive groups (n = 33, 33, and 34). Intraoperative complications in the intermediate and late groups were significantly less compared to those in the early group (2/33, 2/34, and 7/33, respectively; (p < 0.05). Similarly, the mean operating time was significantly reduced between the early (169 min) and both intermediate (116 min) and late (127 min) groups (p < 0.005). The conversion rate was reduced between the three groups (3/33, 2/33, and 0/34), but this was not significant (p = 0.06). CONCLUSIONS As expected, the outcome of LA is associated with a steep learning curve. According to this study, it seems that performance of approximately 30 cases by an experienced laparoscopic surgeon is required to master the procedure.

Abstract
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) nuclear antigen 3C (EBNA3C) is critical for EBV immortalization of infected B lymphocytes and can coactivate the EBV LMP1 promoter with EBNA2. EBNA3C amino acids 365 to 545 are necessary and sufficient for coactivation and are required for SUMO-1 and SUMO-3 interaction. We found that EBNA3C but not EBNA3CDelta343-545 colocalized with SUMO-1 in nuclear bodies and was modified by SUMO-2, SUMO-3, and SUMO-1. EBNA3C amino acids 545 to 628 and amino acids 30 to 365 were also required for EBNA3C sumolation and nuclear body localization but were dispensable for coactivation, indicating that EBNA3C sumolation is not required for coactivation. Furthermore, EBNA3C amino acids 476 to 992 potently coactivated with EBNA2 but EBNA3C amino acids 516 to 922 lacked activity, indicating that amino acids 476 to 515 are critical for coactivation. EBNA3C amino acids 476 to 515 include DDDVIEV(507-513), which are similar to SUMO-1 EEDVIEV(84-90). EBNA3C m1 and m2 point mutations, DDD(507-509) mutated to AAA and DVIEVID(509-513) mutated to AVIAVIA, respectively, diminished SUMO-1 and SUMO-3 interaction in directed yeast two-hybrid and glutathione S-transferase pulldown assays. Furthermore, EBNA3C m1 and m2 did not coactivate the LMP1 promoter with EBNA2. Overexpression of wild-type SUMO-1, SUMO-3, and the SUMO-conjugating enzyme UBC9 coactivated the LMP1 promoter with EBNA2. Since EBNA2 activation is dependent on p300/CBP, the possible effect of EBNA3C on p300-mediated transcription was assayed. EBNA3C potentiated transcription of p300 fused to a heterologous DNA binding domain, whereas EBNA3C m1 and m2 did not. All of these data are consistent with a model in which EBNA3C upregulates EBNA2-mediated gene activation by binding to a sumolated repressor and inhibiting repressive effects on p300/CBP and other transcription factor(s) at EBNA2-regulated promoters.

Abstract
The invariant differential cross section for inclusive neutral-pion production in p+p collisions at sqrt[s]=200 GeV has been measured at midrapidity (|eta|<0.35) over the range 1<p(T) less, similar 14 GeV/c by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Predictions of next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations are consistent with these measurements. The precision of our result is sufficient to differentiate between prevailing gluon-to-pion fragmentation functions.

Abstract
The histone code guides many aspects of chromosome biology including the equal distribution of chromosomes during cell division. In the chromatin domains surrounding the centromere, known as pericentric heterochromatin, histone modifications, particularly deacetylation and methylation, appear to be essential for proper chromosome segregation. However, the specific factors and their precise roles in this highly orchestrated process remain under active investigation. Here, we report that germ-line or somatic deletion of mSds3, an essential component of the functional mSin3/HDAC corepressor complex, generates a cell-lethal condition associated with rampant aneuploidy, defective karyokinesis, and consequently, a failure of cytokinesis. mSds3-deficient cells fail to deacetylate and methylate pericentric heterochromatin histones and to recruit essential heterochromatin-associated proteins, resulting in aberrant associations among heterologous chromosomes via centromeric regions and consequent failure to properly segregate chromosomes. Mutant mSds3 molecules that are defective in mSin3 binding fail to rescue the mSds3 null phenotypes. On the basis of these findings, we propose that mSds3 and its associated mSin3/HDAC components play a central role in initiating the cascade of pericentric heterochromatin-specific modifications necessary for the proper distribution of chromosomes during cell division in mammalian cells.

Abstract
The anisotropy parameter (v(2)), the second harmonic of the azimuthal particle distribution, has been measured with the PHENIX detector in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV for identified and inclusive charged particle production at central rapidities (|eta|<0.35) with respect to the reaction plane defined at high rapidities (|eta|=3-4 ). We observe that the v(2) of mesons falls below that of (anti)baryons for p(T)>2 GeV/c, in marked contrast to the predictions of a hydrodynamical model. A quark-coalescence model is also investigated.

Abstract
We report on the yield of protons and antiprotons, as a function of centrality and transverse momentum, in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV measured at midrapidity by the PHENIX experiment at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. In central collisions at intermediate transverse momenta (1.5<p(T)<4.5 GeV/c) a significant fraction of all produced particles are protons and antiprotons. They show a centrality-scaling behavior different from that of pions. The pmacr;/pi and p/pi ratios are enhanced compared to peripheral Au+Au, p+p, and e(+)e(-) collisions. This enhancement is limited to p(T)<5 GeV/c as deduced from the ratio of charged hadrons to pi(0) measured in the range 1.5<p(T)<9 GeV/c.

Abstract
Transverse momentum spectra of charged hadrons with p(T)<8 GeV/c and neutral pions with p(T)<10 GeV/c have been measured at midrapidity by the PHENIX experiment at BNL RHIC in d+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. The measured yields are compared to those in p+p collisions at the same sqrt[s(NN)] scaled up by the number of underlying nucleon-nucleon collisions in d+Au. The yield ratio does not show the suppression observed in central Au+Au collisions at RHIC. Instead, there is a small enhancement in the yield of high momentum particles.

Suppressed pi(0) production at large transverse momentum in central Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2003; 91:072301. Abstract
Transverse momentum spectra of neutral pions in the range 1<p(T)<10 GeV/c have been measured at midrapidity by the PHENIX experiment at BNL RHIC in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. The pi(0) multiplicity in central reactions is significantly below the yields measured at the same sqrt[s(NN)] in peripheral Au+Au and p+p reactions scaled by the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions. For the most central bin, the suppression factor is approximately 2.5 at p(T)=2 GeV/c and increases to approximately 4-5 at p(T) approximately 4 GeV/c. At larger p(T), the suppression remains constant within errors. The deficit is already apparent in semiperipheral reactions and increases smoothly with centrality.

Abstract
It has long been thought that intracranial saccular aneurysms enlarge and rupture because of mechanical instabilities. Recent nonlinear analyses suggest, however, that at least certain sub-classes of aneurysms do not exhibit quasi-static limit point instabilities or dynamic instabilities in response to periodic loading, and consequently, that the natural history of these lesions is likely governed by growth and remodeling processes. In this paper, we present additional results that support the finding that one particular sub-class of saccular aneurysms is dynamically stable. Specifically, we extended recent results of Shah and Humphrey, which are based on the assumption that some saccular aneurysms can be modeled as spherical elastic membranes surrounded by a viscous cerebrospinal fluid, to account for a viscohyperelastic behavior of the aneurysm. It is shown that inclusion of a "short-term" viscoelastic contribution to the mechanical behavior of an aneurysm serves to increase its dynamic stability against various disturbances.

Abstract
The Ommaya reservoir system has been used for the treatment of chronic central nervous system infections and intracranial tumors for more than three decades. The majority of reported Ommaya reservoir infections occur proximate to the time the device is accessed. A review of the literature reveals that late onset of reservoir infection is quite rare. We report a case of Ommaya reservoir infection due to Staphylococcus aureus that was diagnosed seven years after its insertion and usage for intracerebral non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and review the literature on the microbiology and management of Ommaya reservoir infections.
