Abstract

Abstract
The presence of olfactory dysfunction in individuals at higher risk of Alzheimer's disease has significant diagnostic and screening implications for preventive and ameliorative drug trials. Olfactory threshold, discrimination and identification can be reliably recorded in the early stages of neurodegenerative diseases. The current study has examined the ability of various olfactory functions in predicting cognitive decline in a community-dwelling sample. A group of 308 participants, aged 46-86 years old, were recruited for this study. After 3 years of follow-up, participants were divided into cognitively declined and non-declined groups based on their performance on a neuropsychological battery. Assessment of olfactory functions using the Sniffin' Sticks battery indicated that, contrary to previous findings, olfactory discrimination, but not olfactory identification, significantly predicted subsequent cognitive decline (odds ratio = 0.869; P<0.05; 95% confidence interval = 0.764-0.988). The current study findings confirm previously reported associations between olfactory and cognitive functions, and indicate that impairment in olfactory discrimination can predict future cognitive decline. These findings further our current understanding of the association between cognition and olfaction, and support olfactory assessment in screening those at higher risk of dementia.

Abstract
AbstractTo evaluate the prevalence of pancreatic auto-antibodies (PAb) as well as its relationship with HLA DR B1 and PTPN22 polymorphisms in first degree relatives (FDR) of Brazilian patients with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) and multiethnic background.FDR of patients with T1D were interviewed and blood was sampled for PAb measurement, HLA DRB1 and PTPN22 genotyping. Genotyping was also performed in index cases. In FDR (n=78), 16.7% presented at least one PAb. These individuals had a higher prevalence of HLA DRB1* 03 than others (p=0.03), without differences in PTPN22 genotyping. While the genetic profile was similar in FDR with PAb and their index cases, those without PAb had a lower frequency of HLA DR B1 * 03 than their correspondent patients (p=0.009).In this multiethnic population, a significant proportion of FDR of T1D patients had PAb, which was associated with HLA DR B1 * 03 but not with the PTPN22 polymorphism.Type 1 diabetes and relatives: Antibodies, genetics

Abstract
AIM Changes in skeletal muscle morphology and metabolism are associated with limited functional capacity in heart failure, which can be attenuated by neuromuscular electrical stimulation (ES). The purpose of the present study was to analyse the effects of ES upon GLUT-4 protein content, fibre structure and vessel density of the skeletal muscle in a rat model of HF subsequent to myocardial infarction. METHODS Forty-four male Wistar rats were assigned to one of four groups: sham (S), sham submitted to ES (S+ES), heart failure (HF) and heart failure submitted to ES (HF+ES). The rats in the ES groups were submitted to ES of the left leg during 20 days (2.5 kHz, once a day, 30 min, duty cycle 50%- 15 s contraction/15 s rest). After this period, the left tibialis anterior muscle was collected from all the rats for analysis. RESULTS HF+ES rats showed lower values of lung congestion when compared with HF rats (P = 0.0001). Although muscle weight was lower in HF rats than in the S group, thus indicating hypotrophy, 20 days of ES led to their recovery (P < 0.0001). In both groups submitted to ES, there was an increase in muscle vessel density (P < 0.04). Additionally, heart failure determined a 49% reduction in GLUT-4 protein content (P < 0.03), which was recovered by ES (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION In heart failure, ES improves morphological changes and raises GLUT-4 content in skeletal muscle.

Abstract
Sustainable waste management system for effluents treatment sludge has been a pressing issue for pulp and paper sector. Recycling is always recommended in terms of environmental sustainability. Following an approach of waste valorisation, this work aims to demonstrate the technical viability of producing fiber-cement roof sheets incorporating cellulose primary sludge generated on paper and pulp mills. From the results obtained with preliminary studies it was possible to verify the possibility of producing fiber-cement sheets by replacing 25% of the conventional used virgin long fiber by primary effluent treatment cellulose sludge. This amount of incorporation was tested on an industrial scale. Environmental parameters related to water and waste, as well as tests for checking the quality of the final product was performed. These control parameters involved total solids in suspension, dissolved salts, chlorides, sulphates, COD, metals content. In the product, parameters like moisture, density and strength were controlled. The results showed that it is possible to replace the virgin long fibers pulp by primary sludge without impacts in final product characteristics and on the environment. This work ensures the elimination of significant waste amounts, which are nowadays sent to landfill, as well as reduces costs associated with the standard raw materials use in the fiber-cement industrial sector.

Abstract
(2)H NMR experiments on a nonionic oriented lamellar phase demonstrate that shear flow induces structural defects in the lamellar structure. These substantial structural changes give rise to a transition from a viscous to a solidlike behavior; the elastic modulus of presheared samples was found to increase, reversibly, with the applied preshear rate. A similar behavior was found when step-cycling the temperature toward the layer-to-multilamellar-vesicle transition and back at constant shear rate. However, while shear rate controls the defect density, the temperature is found to control the defect rigidity. The lamellar phase exhibits a shear-thinning behavior under steady shear conditions, following the power law eta approximately gamma(n), with n approximately -0.4. Both the shear thinning and the elastic behavior are in agreement with the available theoretical models. The observed shear-induced structural defects are reversible and can be regarded as a pretransition prior to the shear-induced formation of multilamellar vesicles.
