Leptin plays a role in ruptured human brain arteriovenous malformations

INTRODUCTION

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is one of the most common clinical manifestations of human brain arteriovenous malformation (BAVM). However, the hemorrhagic mechanism of BAVM is still unclear. Leptin, first discovered in obesity research, has not been systematically studied in BAVM and ICH. We investigated expression and effect of leptin on human BAVM.

METHODS

Specimens were obtained from 6 BAVM patients, who had been divided into either hemorrhagic or non-hemorrhagic groups. Leptin, leptin receptor, and signal transducers and activators of transcription-3 (STAT3) were analyzed by different methods, such as gene chips, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), immunohistochemistry, and Western blot. Perinidal brain tissue around each BAVM served as control.

RESULTS

Gene chips and RT-PCR found transcriptional leptin raised at least 2 levels in hemorrhagic BAVM. Immunohistochemical slices also showed higher expression of leptin, leptin receptor, and STAT3 on nidus part of hemorrhagic BAVM than non-hemorrhagic ones. On Western blot analysis, hemorrhagic BAVMs had higher levels of leptin (p < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

The transcriptional and translational levels of leptin, leptin receptor, and STAT3 were higher in hemorrhagic BAVM, suggesting that leptin may play an important role in the hemorrhagic mechanism of BAVM.

Mechanical Properties and Porosity of Organo-Silicate Glass (OSG) Low-k Dielectric Films

Low-k material integration issues that plague the microelectronics industry include the compromise in mechanical properties that one incurs in abandoning fully dense silica dieletrics. Typical elastic moduli of OSG low-k dieletric films are 2-10 GPa with corresponding hardnesses of 0.5 to 1.5 GPa. In the present study, the hardness and elastic modulus properties measured by nanoindentation of porous silica based low-k films are correlated with in initial estimates of density using a novel technique of spectroscopic ellispsometry. Transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy show the structural and chemical similarity of the films. Nanoindentation and spectroscopic ellipsometry results reflect significant deviations in material behavior from that expected from a simple model of silica (SiO2) with included voids or porosity, suggesting that the methyl groups are actively participating in the mechanical and optical properties of the material.

Central distribution of sensory fibers in the facial nerve: an anatomical and immunohistochemical study

Wheat germ agglutinin-conjugated horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) injection into the facial nerve of the cat resulted in retrograde labeling in the geniculate and jugular ganglia ipsilaterally. Labeled fibers were found to enter into the brain stem through the intermediate and vagal nerves. These fibers ascended or descended into the dorsal portion of the spinal trigeminal tract and were distributed to the principal sensory nucleus of the trigeminal nerve, marginal layer of the interpolar part of the spinal trigeminal nucleus, nucleus of the solitary tract and ventrolateral portion of the cuneate nucleus. It was of particular interest in the present study that the intensive labeling was present in the medial portion of laminae I-IV of the upper cervical spinal cord. The immunohistochemical study revealed a lot of substance P-immunoreactive neurons in the geniculate and jugular ganglia, and heavy accumulation of immunoreactive fibers in laminae I-II of the upper cervical spinal cord.

Tumor microenvironment classification based on T-cell infiltration and PD-L1 in patients with mismatch repair-proficient and -deficient colorectal cancer

The classification of tumor microenvironments according to the presence or absence of tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) expression has been used to predict the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitor antibodies in several cancer types, not including colorectal cancer (CRC). The current study investigated the TIL/PD-L1 status of patients with CRC, particularly patients who presented as mismatch repair-proficient (pMMR) and mismatch repair-deficient (dMMR). A total of 243 patients with CRC were enrolled and defined as pMMR (121 patients) or dMMR (122 patients). Using Pearson's χ² test and multivariable multinomial logistic regression analysis, the associations between MMR status, TIL presence and PD-L1 expression were investigated, in addition to the association between TIL/PD-L1 status and clinicopathological features. The results demonstrated that the dMMR group more frequently exhibited TIL⁺ (85/122 vs. 61/121) and PD-L1⁺ (49/122 vs. 32/121) phenotypes compared with the pMMR group. PD-L1⁺ expression was identified in 42.4% of TIL⁺ cases in the dMMR group, while only 18.0% of TIL⁺ cases were PD-L1⁺ in the pMMR group. High programmed death-1 expression and dMMR status were revealed as two independent risk factors for TIL⁺ PD-L1⁺ status. In conclusion, compared with the pMMR group, the dMMR group was more likely to present with a TIL⁺ PD-L1⁺ status, which suggests that a TIL⁺ PD-L1⁺ tumor microenvironment may partly contribute to the improved response of dMMR patients to anti-PD-1/L1 therapy.

Acupuncture in addition to budesonide does not further improve RQLQ apart from the sleep domain

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture can effectively alleviate the nasal symptoms of allergic rhinitis (AR); however, the mechanism is unclear. Previous studies suggested it may be related to improve hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysfunction. MATERIALS and METHODS: The study was a randomised controlled trial including ninety patients with moderate to severe persis- tent AR. Subjects were randomised 1:1:1 to the 8-weeks treatment with mind-regulating acupuncture combined with intranasal glucocorticosteroids (INGC), conventional acupuncture combined with INGC and INGC alone (MA, CA, GC respectively). The primary outcome was the change from baseline in the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) score of nasal symptoms. Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (RQLQ) score was a key secondary outcome. The levels of corticotrophin releasing hormone (CRH), cortisol (COR) and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) were also analysed. RESULTS: MA, CA and GC reduced VAS score and total RQLQ by a similar degree, but the sleep domain of RQLQ significantly impro- ved in MA and CA compared to GC. Meanwhile, the COR and ACTH level increased, and CRH level decreased after treatment in MA and CA, but the changes showed no difference among the three groups after Bonferroni correction. CONCLUSIONS: Although acupuncture combined with INGC may have potential effect on sleep quality, the combination therapy cannot further improve nasal symptoms or RQLQ compared to INGC alone in AR patients. The influence of acupuncture on HPA axis needs to be further explored.

Use of a quartz crystal impedance technique to monitor the degradation of chondroitin sulfate by hyaluronidase

A new quartz crystal impedance hyaluronidase sensing technique, which is based on the changes in viscosity and density during the enzymatic hydrolysis of chondroitin sulfate (CS) by hyaluronidase (HAse), is established in this paper. The variations of equivalent circuit parameters of the piezoelectric quartz crystal (PQC) during the enzymatic degradation are discussed. The initial hydrolysis rate of CS by HAse is obtained from the changes in viscosity and density with incubation time. Kinetic parameters (the Michaelis constant K(m) and the maximum hydrolysis rate V(max)) of the degradation process are estimated by using a linear method of Lineweaver-Burk plot. K(m) is 2.73 +/- 0.20 mg.ml(-1) and V(max) is -(5.43 +/- 0.38) x 10(-4) kg.m(-2).s(-1/2).min(-1.)

The effects of prenatal X-irradiation on hypoglossal nucleus: a GFAP immunohistochemical study

The effects of prenatal X-irradiation on hypoglossal (XII) nucleus were investigated in the rat. Pregnant animals were exposed to a single whole body X-irradiation on day 11 and 16 of gestation at a does of 1.3 Gy. The offspring were killed at 7-14 days of age for the histological and immunohistochemical observations. Nissl staining revealed no significant changes of XII motoneurons in these experimental animals. In the control case it was of interest that expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein-immunoreactivity (GFAP-IR) is largely confined to the dorsomedial region including the XII nucleus at the level caudal to the obex. Exposure of X-irradiation on day 16 of gestation led to similar expression of GFAP-IR in the nucleus at the same level. However, exposure on day 11 of gestation apparently led to strong expression of GFAP-IR in the XII nucleus at the level caudal to the obex and the expression was observed to extend rostrally. The GFAP-IR cells showed hypertrophy of cell bodies and longer cytoplasmic processes. Horse-radish peroxidase (HRP) injection into the tip of the tongue including the intrinsic muscles resulted in retrograde labeling in the ventromedial portion of the XII nucleus bilaterally from +0.30 to -1.25 mm. The present study would indicate that motoneurons of the XII nucleus supplying mainly the intrinsic and partly the extrinsic tongue muscles are more sensitive to X-ray exposure before the formation of the XII nucleus.

Do sex hormone imbalances contribute to idiopathic condylar resorption?

Idiopathic condylar resorption (ICR) is an aggressive form of temporomandibular joint disease that most frequently presents in adolescent girls during the pubertal growth spurt. Although numerous studies have indicated that the etiopathogenesis of ICR may be related to estrogen deficiency, the decisive role of estrogens remains controversial, and other sex hormone disturbances have not yet been investigated in this regard. Therefore, the aim of this study was to ascertain the role of serum estrogen levels and also the roles of other sex hormones in the pathogenesis of ICR. Ninety-four ICR patients and 324 disc displacement (DD) patients, of both sexes, were enrolled. Information on menstruation and serum levels of follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, prolactin, 17β-estradiol (E2), testosterone, and progesterone were recorded and analyzed. The results showed that female ICR patients had normal puberty onset, within the average age range. Use of oral contraceptives and other menstruation-regulating pharmaceuticals was similar in the two groups. Of note, neither serum E2 levels nor those of the other sex hormones differed significantly between female ICR and DD patients. However, male ICR patients had significantly increased serum testosterone levels (P=0.002) and relatively higher E2 levels (P=0.095) compared to DD patients. This study found that reduced serum E2 did not contribute to ICR; instead, systemic testosterone disturbances were found to be related to ICR.

Purification, crystallization and X-ray analysis of swine vesicular disease virus

Swine vesicular disease virus (SVDV) is the etiological agent of swine vesicular disease, a highly contagious disease in pigs, and is related to coxsackie B virus. Crystalline arrays of SVDV can be observed in the cytoplasm of cells 4.5 h after inoculation to porcine kidney cells (IBRS-2 cells). Crystals of the JX/78 strain of SVDV were obtained from virus in two wells of crystallization conditions and present preliminary X-ray data to 3.6 A resolution.

Taxonomic status of Pinus henryi using multiplexed microsatellite markers

The taxonomic status of Pinus henryi, a rare species endemic to China, is still ambiguous. In this study, the genetic relationships among P. henryi and its congeners (P. tabulaeformis, P. tabulaeformis var. mukdensis, and P. massoniana) were revealed using multiplexed microsatellite markers, including chloroplast microsatellites, nuclear microsatellites, and expressed sequence tag microsatellites. The results refute the hypothesis that P. henryi is a subspecies of P. tabulaeformis or P. massoniana and support the suggestion that it may be a distinct species closely related to P. tabulaeformis.

Expression and phosphorylation of a MARCKS-like protein in gastric chief cells: further evidence for modulation of pepsinogen secretion by interaction of Ca2+/calmodulin with protein kinase C

In gastric chief cells, agents that activate protein kinase C (PKC) stimulate pepsinogen secretion and phosphorylation of an acidic 72-kDa protein. The isoelectric point and molecular mass of this protein are similar to those for a common PKC substrate; the MARCKS (for Myristoylated Alanine-Rich C Kinase Substrate) protein. We examined expression and phosphorylation of the MARCKS-like protein in a nearly homogeneous suspension of chief cells from guinea pig stomach. Western blotting of fractions from chief cell lysates with a specific MARCKS antibody resulted in staining of a myristoylated 72-kDA protein (pp72), associated predominantly with the membrane fraction. Using permeabilized chief cells, we examined the effect of PKC activation (with the phorbol ester PMA), in the presence of basal (100 nM) or elevated cellular calcium (1 microM), on pepsinogen secretion and phosphorylation of the 72-KDa MARCKS-like protein. Secretion was increased 2.3-, 2.6-, and 4.5-fold by incubation with 100 nM PMA, 1 microM calcium, and PMA plus calcium, respectively. A PKC inhibitor (1 microM CGP 41 251) abolished PMA-induced secretion, but did not alter calcium-induced secretion. This indicates that calcium-induced secretion is independent of PKC activation. Chief cell proteins were labeled with 32P-orthophosphate and phosphorylation of pp72 was detected by autoradiography of 2-dimensional polyacrylamide gels. In the presence of basal calcium, PMA (100 nM) caused a > two-fold increase in phosphorylation of pp72. Without PMA, calcium did not alter phosphorylation of pp72. However, 1 microM calcium caused an approx. 50% attenuation of PMA-induced phosphorylation of pp72. Experiments with a MARCKS "phosphorylation/calmodulin binding domain peptide" indicated that calcium/calmodulin inhibits phosphorylation of pp72 by binding to the phosphorylation/calmodulin binding domain and not by inhibiting PKC activity. These observations support the hypothesis that, in gastric chief cells, interplay between calcium/calmodulin binding and phosphorylation of a common domain on the 72-kDa MARCKS-like protein plays a role in modulating pepsinogen secretion.

[Expression level of MDR1, and MRP in patients with malignant blood disease and its clinical significance]

RT-PCR method was used to detect the expression level of multi-drug resistance gene (MDR1) and multi-drug resistance associated protein (MRP) in patients with malignant blood disease, including 19 cases of acute leukemia and 6 cases of multiple myeloma. The results showed: expression level of MDR1 in patients with known clinical drug resistance elevated obviously and was significantly associated with clinical drug resistance (r = 0.612, P < 0.01), which indicated that expression of MDR1 was the main mechanism of clinical drug resistance. There is no obvious relationship between expression level of MDR1 and MRP (r = 0.035, P > 0.05).

A monoclonal antibody to ICP4 of MDV recognizing ICP4 of serotype 1 and 3 MDV strains

Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) were prepared against ICP4 of Marek's disease virus (MDV). Mice were inoculated with ICP4 obtained from High-Five insect cells infected with a recombinant baculovirus expressing ICP4. MAbs were selected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using MDV-infected and control chick kidney cells as antigens. One of the MAbs, 5H8, recognized an epitope toward the carboxyl terminus of ICP4 based on staining of reticuloendotheliosis virus-transformed cells transfected with full-length and truncated ICP4 constructs. This MAb recognized ICP4 in chicken embryo fibroblasts (CEFs) infected with MDV strains JM16 and HVT but not with SB-1 strain. Using Western blot analysis a protein of 155 kDa was detected in CEFs infected with JM16 and HVT strains.

Effect of AQP1 expression level on Co(2) permeability in bovine corneal endothelium

PURPOSE

Corneal endothelial fluid transport is dependent on HCO(3)(-) and CO(2) fluxes. CO(2) permeability (P:CO(2)) measurements in an oocyte expression system and in reconstituted proteoliposomes have suggested that the water channel AQP1 can transport CO(2). An AQP1 knockout mouse model, however, showed no evidence for CO(2) transport through AQP1 in erythrocytes or lung. Because HCO(3)(-) and CO(2) fluxes are essential to endothelial function, the current study was conducted to determine whether AQP1 expression levels in confluent cultures of bovine corneal endothelial cells (BCECs) affects membrane PCO(2).

METHODS

BCEC endogenous AQP1 expression was reduced by antisense oligonucleotide (AO) transfection or adenoviral antisense-AQP1 (AV) infection. AQP1 was overexpressed by adenoviral sense-AQP1 (SV) infection, which directs expression of recombinant AQP1.

RESULTS

Expression of AQP1 and osmotic water permeability (control P(f) = 0.046 +/- 0.005 cm/sec) were reduced 45% and 36.5%, respectively, by AO transfection and reduced 67% and 49%, respectively, by AV infection. SV infection induced a more than threefold overexpression of AQP1 but showed only a 37% increase in P(f). Adenoviral empty virus (EV) infection did not change AQP1 expression or P(f). PCO(2) was determined by measuring the rate of intracellular pH decrease after exposure to CO(2)/HCO(3)(-)-rich solutions, as measured by the pH-sensitive fluorescent dye 2',7'-bis-(2-carboxyethyl)-5-(and-6)-carboxyfluorescein (BCECF). Apparent PCO(2) of BCEC (0.0036 +/- 0.00023 cm/sec) was not different among control, oligonucleotide-transfected, and adenoviral-infected cells. P(f) could also be reduced more than 50% by 3 to 5 minutes' exposure of control cells to 0.5 mM p-chloromercuriphenylsulfonic acid (pCMBS), but this had no effect on rates of intracellular pH decrease.

CONCLUSIONS

AQP1 does not contribute to PCO(2) in corneal endothelial cells.

Brainstem projections of sensory fibers of the lung: a horseradish peroxidase and c-fos-like immunohistochemical study in the rat

The brainstem projections of sensory fibers of the lung were determined in the rat by using the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and c-fos immunohistochemical methods. Wheat germ agglutinin conjugated HRP (WGA-HRP) was injected into the parenchyma of the upper lobe of the left lung. This injection resulted in anterograde labeling in the nucleus of the tractus solitarius (NTS), area postrema (AP) and external cuneate nucleus (ECu) with slightly ipsilateral predominance. It was of interest that these labeled sensory fibers are heavily accumulated in the medial subnucleus at the rostral pole of the NTS and in the commissural subnucleus at the caudal pole. In particular, labeled fibers in the medial subnucleus were characterized by division into the ventral and dorsal portions. After formalin was injected into the parenchyma of the upper lobe of the left lung, the expression of c-fos-like immunoreactivity (FOS-LI) was observed in three nuclei of the brainstem mentioned above. In addition, this experiment resulted in the expression in the ventrolateral medulla, nucleus raphe pallidus and dorsal motor nucleus of vagus nerve bilaterally. With respect to the number of the immunoreactive cells, we could draw the conclusion that the most optimum time to induce the expression of FOS-LI is between 1.5 h and 2.0 h after noxious stimuli.

[Establishment of clinical features and prognostic scoring model in early-stage hepatitis B-related acute-on-chronic liver failure]

Objective: To explore the clinical characteristics and establish a corresponding prognostic scoring model in patients with early-stage clinical features of hepatitis B-induced acute-on-chronic liver failure (HBV-ACLF). Methods: Clinical characteristics of 725 cases with hepatitis B-related acute-on-chronic hepatic dysfunction (HBV-ACHD) were retrospectively analyzed using Chinese group on the study of severe hepatitis B (COSSH). The independent risk factors associated with 90-day prognosis to establish a prognostic scoring model was analyzed by multivariate Cox regression, and was validated by 500 internal and 390 external HBV-ACHD patients. Results: Among 725 cases with HBV-ACHD, 76.8% were male, 96.8% had cirrhosis base,66.5% had complications of ascites, 4.1% had coagulation failure in respect to organ failure, and 9.2% had 90-day mortality rate. Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that TBil, WBC and ALP were the best predictors of 90-day mortality rate in HBV-ACHD patients. The established scoring model was COSS-HACHADs = 0.75 × ln(WBC) + 0.57 × ln(TBil)-0.94 × ln(ALP) +10. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of subjects was significantly higher than MELD, MELD-Na, CTP and CLIF-C ADs(P < 0.05). An analysis of 500 and 390 cases of internal random selection group and external group had similar verified results. Conclusion: HBV-ACHD patients are a group of people with decompensated cirrhosis combined with small number of organ failure, and the 90-day mortality rate is 9.2%. COSSH-ACHDs have a higher predictive effect on HBV-ACHD patients' 90-day prognosis, and thus provide evidence-based medicine for early clinical diagnosis and treatment.

The application of high frequency ultrasound in the muscles, bones and the thoracodorsal artery in subscapular region and analysis of ultrasonic characteristics

OBJECTIVE

To analyze the application value of high-frequency ultrasound in the muscles, bones and the thoracodorsal artery in the subscapular region and summarize the characteristics of ultrasound.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

Subscapularis muscle, bone and thoracodorsal artery of 72 healthy subjects were examined using high-frequency ultrasound, the initial segment diameter of the thoracodorsal artery and peak systolic blood flow velocity were recorded, and the ultrasonographic characteristics of subscapularis muscle, bone and thoracodorsal artery were summarized.

RESULTS

The spinous processes of 7th thoracic vertebrae, 9th thoracic vertebrae and 11th thoracic vertebrae all showed strong echoes with posterior acoustic shadow. The vertebral plates of 8th thoracic vertebrae, 10th thoracic vertebrae and 11th thoracic vertebrae showed a strong linear echo on both sides of the spinous process, and the lateral side was connected with the transverse processes of 8th thoracic vertebrae, 10th thoracic vertebrae, and 11th thoracic vertebrae. The inferior scapular artery was launched from the axillary artery, along with the deep side of the inferior scapular muscle, the latissimus dorsi and teres major muscle, and then it went inferior and backward which was then divided into arteriae dorsalis scapulae and thoracodorsal artery, showing a tubular structure with no echo. Color Doppler Flow Imaging (CDFI) showed the endovascular blood flow signal of the inferior scapular artery and its branches. The internal diameter of the initial segment of the thoracodorsal artery of the male subjects was bigger than that of the female subjects, and the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

High-frequency ultrasound can provide a reliable reference for the anatomical structure and adjacent relationship of subscapular muscles, bones and thoracodorsal artery, and is worthy of being promoted as a non-invasive and reliable mean of examination.

Personalized music therapy combined with medication as treatment for tinnitus

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to investigate the effects of personalized music therapy in combination with medication as a treatment for tinnitus.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

We retrospectively analyzed a total of 200 patients who were admitted to the Department of Otorhinolaryngology in our hospital from June 2018 to June 2019, with tinnitus as their primary complaint. Patients were divided into four groups based on their individual treatment methods: medication group (patients received medication only, n=40), tinnitus masking (TM) group (patients received medication plus TM, n=38), tinnitus re-training (TRT) group (patients received medication plus TRT, n=35), and personalized group (patients received medication plus personalized music therapy, n=30). The pure-tone audiometry (PTA), loudness visual analogue scale (VAS), and tinnitus handicap inventory (THI) for each patient were analyzed.

RESULTS

There were statistically significant differences in the THI and VAS scores of all groups before and after treatment (p<0.05). Following nine and twelve months of treatment, the THI and VAS scores of the TRT group and the personalized group were significantly lower than those of the other two groups (p<0.05). The THI and VAS scores of the personalized group were significantly lower than those of the TRT group (p<0.05). Additionally, THI and VAS scores were statistically different at various measurement time points in each group (p<0.05). The clinical effective rate (85.37%) of the personalized group was higher than that of the other three groups (p<0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

TM, TRT, or personalized music therapy, when combined with medication, are effective in treating patients with tinnitus. Among these methods, personalized music therapy may be the superior treatment after nine months of treatment.

[Missed diagnosis in prostate incidental carcinoma]

522 cases of benign prostate hyperplasia from 1980 to 1994 were reviewed. Prostate incidental carcinoma (PIC) was identified in 26 cases (4.98%). In order to study the pathomorphological features and to study the causes for missed diagnosis of this entity, the authors observed and analysed the numbers of carcinomatous foci their distribution, classification, staging and differentiation, morphological features and prostate specific antigen (PSA) markers. It was found that 23 cases exhibited a pathological structure of uniform pattern and 3 cases with pluriform pattern. Adenocarcinoma was most common. 17 cases were A1 stage and 9 cases were A2 stage. Isolated multiple foci of invasion and alterations of architecture are important pathological features of these cases. Missed diagnosis of prostate cancer is related to the small amount of biopsy tissue, contrast between benign and malignant prostate epithelial tissue not distinct, scarce nuclear anaplasia, careless microscopic observation, or observer lacks the ability to differentiate between pathologic types and pluriform patterns. Different PSA reactions may be related to tumor differentiation and classification.

[Optimum choice for the cultivation of CFU-GM in media buffered with HEPES]

The effects of media buffered with HEPES of different concentrations and different incubation periods on the proliferation and differentiation of CFU-GM were studied under the standard condition for culture. The results exhibited that when the incubation period prolonged, the pH values of culture system raised and the colony formation of CFU-GM decreased; the culture system added with proper HEPES buffer solution could maintain and increase the colony formation of CFU-GM, especially the culture system in which the pH value was not adjusted before the experiment. We also found that media buffered with HEPES could change the ratio of different colony types. This showed that media buffered with HEPES could not only stimulate the proliferation of CFU-GM, but also affect its differentiation. The results suggest that media buffered with HEPES are better than those without HEPES for the culture of hematopoietic progenitor cells, and the optimum concentration is 10-20 mmol.L-1.
