Abstract
To examine effects of mother's anxiety and depression and associated risk factors during early pregnancy on fetal growth and activity. Repeated measures of mother's anxiety (State-Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S)) and depression (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS)) and related socio demographics and substance consumption were obtained at the 1st and 2nd pregnancy trimesters, and fetus' (N = 147) biometric data and behavior was recorded during ultrasound examination at 20-22 weeks of gestation. Higher anxiety symptoms were associated to both lower fetal growth and higher fetal activity. While lower education, primiparity, adolescent motherhood, and tobacco consumption predicted lower fetal growth, coffee intake predicted lower fetal activity. Vulnerability of fetal development to mother's psychological symptoms as well as to other sociodemographic and substance consumption risk factors during early and mid pregnancy is suggested.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several case reports in the literature brought to discussion the distinction criteria between fetus in fetu and teratoma. CASE REPORT The authors present a case report of a premature newborn boy, evaluated for a capsulated abdominal mass with prenatal diagnosis pointing to possible malignant lesion. A CT scan showed an expansive, retroperitoneal lesion, from kidneys to pelvis, sacrum and coccyx, with solid, cystic and fatty areas; the fine needle aspiration was inconclusive, and he underwent surgery on day 9 with partial resection of the lesion. A new procedure to complete the excision was performed 8 months later. The histopathologic examination of the two fragments showed mature and organized components of nervous system, respiratory and digestive apparatus (liver and pancreas included), thymus, nervous ganglia, skin and adnexa, musculoskeletal and brown adipose tissues; cartilage and several focus of calcification. These components showed a craniocaudal orientation, but no evidence of organoid formation. DISCUSSION This case presents features of both teratoma and fetus in fetu. The assumption of either one of the diagnosis has prognostic implications, with resulting differences in clinical follow up and expectations about the child's health.

Abstract
The phosphorus distribution in volcanic sediments of three lakes that are under different anthropogenic pressures in São Miguel island (Azores - Portugal) was evaluated using a sequential extraction scheme. The P-fractionation scheme employs sequential extractions of sediment with NH4Cl, bicarbonate-dithionite (BD), NaOH (at room temperature), HCl and NaOH (at 85 degrees C) to obtain five P-fractions. The P-fractionation shows that in lakes with higher trophic status (Lake Furnas and Lake Sete Cidades), the NaOH extracted P is the dominant fraction, that contribute with more than 50% to total sedimentary phosphorus. The rank order of P-fractionation for these two lakes was NaOH>NaOH (85 degrees C)>HCl>BD>NH4Cl for Furnas lake and NaOH>HCl>NaOH (85 degrees C)>NH4Cl>BD for Sete Cidades lake. On the other hand, the trend of P contribution in the oligotrophic lake Fogo shows that the most inert P pools have the higher concentrations, with more than 50% of the P contribution from the last extraction step with NaOH at 85 degrees C. For this lake, the rank order of P-fractionation was NH4Cl>BD>NaOH>HCl>NaOH (85 degrees C). The Phosphorus Maximum Solubilization Potential (P-MSP) was also calculated and the results show that for the more bio-available P-fractions (first and second extraction step), the P-MSP values for Furnas and Sete Cidades lakes are sensibly higher than the results obtained in Fogo lake, an indication of the non-point diffuse load discharged in the first ones.

Abstract
In vineyards the presence of certain fungi may lead to the production of the mycotoxin ochratoxin A (OTA) and subsequent contamination of grapes and wine. Furthermore, winery wastewaters contaminated with OTA may represent an environmental hazard. Therefore, it is imperative to assess the fate of this mycotoxin in conventional wastewater treatment systems. The aim of the present work was to assess the biological degradation of OTA. Experimental work was carried out in batch experiments with initial OTA to biomass concentration ratios of 1.4 microg mg(-1), 7.4 microg mg(-1) and, 11.9 microg mg(-1). The assays were inoculated with activated sludge biomass unadapted to the substance under examination. The proposed bioassay demonstrates that OTA concentrations up to 100 microg L(-1) can be degraded by microbial activity in activated sludge.

Abstract
Sustainability has strong implications on the practice of engineering. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is an appropriate methodology for assessing the sustainability of a wastewater treatment plant design. The present study used a LCA approach for comparing alternative wastewater treatment processes for small and decentralised rural communities. The assessment was focused on two energy-saving systems (constructed wetland and slow rate infiltration) and a conventional one (activated sludge process). The low environmental impact of the energy-saving wastewater treatment plants was demonstrated, the most relevant being the global warming indicator. Options for reduction of life cycle impacts were assessed including materials used in construction and operational lifetime of the systems. A 10% extension of operation lifetime of constructed wetland and slow rate infiltration systems led to a 1% decrease in CO2 emissions, in both systems. The decrease in the abiotic depletion was 5 and 7%, respectively. Also, replacing steel with HDPE in the activated sludge tank resulted in a 1% reduction in CO2 emission and 1% in the abiotic depletion indicator. In the case of the Imhoff tank a 1% reduction in CO2 emissions and 5% in the abiotic depletion indicator were observed when concrete was replaced by HDPE.

Abstract
Natural interactions between water, soil, atmosphere, plants and microorganisms include physical, chemical and biological processes with decontaminating capacities. Natural or energy-saving wastewater treatment systems utilize these processes and thereby enable a sustainable management in the field of wastewater treatment, offering low investment and operation costs, little or no energy consumption, little and low-skill labor requirements, good landscape integration and excellent feasibility for small settlements, especially when remote from centralized sewer systems. The objective of this work is the development of cost functions for investment and operation of energy-saving wastewater treatment technologies. Cost functions are essential for making cost estimations based on a very reduced number of variables. The latter are easily identified and quantified and have a direct bearing on the costs in question. The formulated investment and operation cost functions follow a power law, and the costs decrease with the increase of the population served. The different energy-saving wastewater treatment systems serving small population settlements, between 50 p.e. and 250 p.e., present associated investment costs varying from 400 Euro/p.e. to 200 Euro/p.e. and annual operation costs in the range of 70 Euro/p.e. to 20 Euro/p.e., respectively.

Abstract
A positive reaction to the leishmanin skin test (LST) indicates previous contact with Leishmania antigens and is a useful criterion for the diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis. In leishmaniasis vaccine trials, selection of volunteers has always been based on skin testing. During 1999 we performed a randomized controlled study in order to evaluate the immunogenicity of the LST. Fifty-nine (29 male and 30 female) healthy volunteer undergraduate students from the Medical School of Volta Redonda, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, with no evidence of previous infection with Leishmania, were randomly assigned into 2 groups: 29 subjects received LST and 30 received a placebo (merthiolate-phosphate-buffered saline). All volunteers received LST 41 d after the first injection of LST or placebo. Blood samples were taken immediately before the applications of LST or placebo for the assessment of Leishmania antigen-induced proliferation and cytokine production in peripheral blood mononuclear cell cultures. A significant increase in proliferative responses to L. braziliensis (P < 0.005) and L. amazonensis (P = 0.01) antigens as well as in L. braziliensis antigen-induced interferon-gamma production (P < 0.01) followed the application of LST but not the administration of the placebo. A single LST application is therefore able to induce Leishmania-specific cell-mediated immune responses. This observation should be considered in human trials of candidate vaccines against leishmaniasis.

Abstract
Average mass transfer coefficients of an inert compound (LiCI) within denitrifying biofilms were monitored during biofilm growth in a membrane flow cell under different flow conditions, until the biofilm reached (pseudo-) steady state. Average effective diffusivities were found to increase with the decrease tortuosity factors of the biofilm matrix. The lowest tortuosity factor corresponded the highest liquid velocity.

Abstract
Lymphoepithelioma is an undifferentiated carcinoma with prominent lymphoid stroma in the nasopharynx. Tumors with similar histology have been reported with other localizations, including the lungs, and are designated as lymphoepithelioma-like carcinomas (LELC). Primary LELC of the lung is very rare, and scant information is available in the scientific literature. This paper details the case of a 25-year-old Caucasian male patient with the diagnosis (determined by thoracotomy) of primary LELC of the lung. Immunohistochemical analysis was negative for Epstein-Barr virus, as was the in situ hybridization of the tumor cells. Observation of the nasopharynx and a magnetic resonance image of the cavum were normal. Because the tumor (T4N2M0) could not be resected, the patient was treated with chemotherapy, carboplatin/5-fluorouracil, completing two cycles. The patient's condition worsened when he developed contralateral pneumonia, which was then followed by pericardial effusion. The patient died 36 h later from cardiac tamponade. Presented here is a revision of this rare pathology, not often reported in the literature.
