Abstract
BACKGROUND Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is one of the cerebrovascular diseases that bear a high risk of hemorrhage. The treatment modalities include microsurgical resection, endovascular embolization, stereotactic radiosurgery, or combinations that vary widely. Several large series have been reported, while data from Asian populations were few. The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy of linear accelerator stereotactic radiosurgery (LINAC SRS) for the treatment of intracranial AVMs, to evaluate the hemorrhage rate and to analyze associated factors. METHODS One hundred and sixteen patients with AVM were treated with LINAC SRS in a single institute between September 1994 and May 2005 and were retrospectively evaluated. The demographics of patients, clinical characteristics of AVM, the treatment modalities, and the parameters of the LINAC SRS were analyzed. Delayed toxicity and hemorrhage rate after treatment were also evaluated. The AVM obliteration and bleed rates were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression analyses. RESULTS The efficacy rate with total obliteration after treatment was 81.9% (95 of 116 patients). The median interval to achieve total obliteration was 49 months. Microsurgical resection combined with SRS for residual AVMs achieved better obliteration rates compared to SRS alone (statistically significant, p = 0.001), while no significant difference was found between the embolization group and the group with no prior treatment (p = 0.895). The Spetzler-Martin grade of AVM is a relative factor of obliteration, higher grades resulting in a worse outcome (p = 0.009). Obliteration was significantly influenced by AVM volume in univariate analysis (p = 0.034), and volume <5 cm(3) contributed to improved obliteration (p = 0.01). There was no statistically significant difference in the hemorrhagic rate and the complication rate between ruptured and unruptured AVMs, while the unruptured group had a higher obliteration rate (p = 0.024). The annual hemorrhage rate after LINAC SRS treatment was 1.9%. The bleeding rate was 3.3% in the first year after radiosurgery, 2.1% in the second year, 1.9% between the second and fifth year, and 1.5% between the fifth and tenth year. Patients with hemorrhagic events before radiosurgery appeared to have a higher rebleeding risk during the latency period. Twenty-three patients (19.8%) had late adverse effects with regard to posttreatment radiological follow-up, but only 1 (0.8%) had newly developed neurological deficits. CONCLUSION LINAC SRS achieved a high obliteration rate and reduced the risk of hemorrhage effectively in ruptured and unruptured intracranial AVMs. Prior microsurgical resection provided better outcome, while embolization showed no benefit. Adverse effects after treatment are acceptable and require long-term follow-up.

Abstract
Decellularization is the process by which cells are discharged from tissues/organs, but all of the essential cues for cell preservation and homeostasis are retained in a three-dimensional structure of the organ and its extracellular matrix components. During tissue decellularization, maintenance of the native ultrastructure and composition of the extracellular matrix (ECM) is extremely acceptable. For recellularization, the scaffold/matrix is seeded with cells, the final goal being to form a practical organ. In this review, we focus on the biological properties of the ECM that remains when a variety of decellularization methods are used, comparing recellularization technologies, including bioreactor expansion for perfusion-based bioartificial organs, and we discuss cell sources. In the future, decellularization–recellularization procedures may solve the problem of organ assembly on demand.

Abstract
Dendritic cells (DCs) are the major specialized antigen-presenting cells for the development of optimal T-cell immunity. DCs can be used as pharmacological targets to monitor novel biological modifiers for the cure of harmful immune responses, such as transplantation rejection. Dryopteris crassirhizoma Nakai (Aspiadaceae) is used for traditional herbal medicine in the region of East Asia. The root of this fern plant has been listed for treating inflammatory diseases. Dryocrassin is the tetrameric phlorophenone component derived from Dryopteris. Here we tested the immunomodulatory potential of dryocrassin on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated activation of mouse bone marrow-derived DCs in vitro and in skin allograft transplantation in vivo. Results demonstrated that dryocrassin reduced the emission of tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, and interleukin-12p70 by LPS-stimulated DCs. The expression of LPS-induced major histocompatibility complex class II, CD40, and CD86 on DCs was also blocked by dryocrassin. Moreover, LPS-stimulated DC-elicited allogeneic T-cell proliferation was alleviated by dryocrassin. In addition, dryocrassin inhibited LPS-induced activation of IkB kinase, JNK/p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase, and the translocation of NF-κB. Treatment with dryocrassin noticeably diminished 2,4-dinitro-1-fluorobenzene-reduced delayed-type hypersensitivity and extended skin allograft survival. Dryocrassin may be one of the potent immunosuppressive agents for transplant rejection via the destruction of DC maturation and function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that impairs motor skills and cognitive function. To date, the disease has no effective therapies. The identification of new drugs that provide benefit in arresting the decline seen in PD patients is the focus of much recent study. However, the lengthy time frame for the progression of neurodegeneration in PD increases both the time and cost of examining potential therapeutic compounds in mammalian models. An alternative is to first evaluate the efficacy of compounds in Caenorhabditis elegans models, which reduces examination time from months to days. n-Butylidenephthalide is the naturally-occurring component derived from the chloroform extract of Angelica sinensis. It has been shown to have anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory properties, but no reports have yet described the effects of n-butylidenephthalide on PD. The aim of this study was to assess the potential for n-butylidenephthalide to improve PD in C. elegans models. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS In the current study, we employed a pharmacological strain that expresses green fluorescent protein specifically in dopaminergic neurons (BZ555) and a transgenic strain that expresses human α-synuclein in muscle cells (OW13) to investigate the antiparkinsonian activities of n-butylidenephthalide. Our results demonstrate that in PD animal models, n-butylidenephthalide significantly attenuates dopaminergic neuron degeneration induced by 6-hydroxydopamine; reduces α-synuclein accumulation; recovers lipid content, food-sensing behavior, and dopamine levels; and prolongs life-span of 6-hydroxydopamine treatment, thus revealing its potential as a possible antiparkinsonian drug. n-Butylidenephthalide may exert its effects by blocking egl-1 expression to inhibit apoptosis pathways and by raising rpn-6 expression to enhance the activity of proteasomes. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE n-Butylidenephthalide may be one of the effective neuroprotective agents for PD.

Abstract
Bovine mastitis is the most common and costly disease of dairy cattle. Cluster of differentiation 4 (CD4) is closely related to the immune response in mastitis. We quantified promoter CpG methylation levels of the CD4 gene in Chinese Holsteins with clinical mastitis (CM) and in healthy controls; these levels were quantitatively detected with bisulfite pyrosequencing assays and confirmed by cloning sequencing. We found that the bovine CD4 promoter had 16% more methyl groups in the cows with CM (75.0 ± 5.8%) compared to the controls (59.0 ± 8.5%). The decreased expression level of CD4 in CM cows may be downregulated by the increased DNA methylation levels in the CD4 promoter. Two-dimensional hierarchical clustering analyses showed large differences in promoter CD4 methylation between mastitic and healthy cows; the dendrogram clearly distinguished the cows with clinical mastitis from healthy controls based on methylation levels. The DNA methylation level of the CD4 gene was strongly influenced by mastitis status in all comparisons. We suggest that the DNA methylation level of the CD4 promoter can be used as a molecular marker for clinical mastitis in dairy cows.

Abstract
The primary cause of death from breast cancer is the progressive growth of tumors and resistance to conventional therapies. It is currently believed that recurrent cancer is repopulated according to a recently proposed cancer stem cell hypothesis. New therapeutic strategies that specifically target cancer stem-like cells may represent a new avenue of cancer therapy. We aimed to discover novel compounds that target breast cancer stem-like cells. We used a dye-exclusion method to isolate side population (SP) cancer cells and, subsequently, subjected these SP cells to a sphere formation assay to generate SP spheres (SPS) from breast cancer cell lines. Surface markers, stemness genes, and tumorigenicity were used to test stem properties. We performed a high-throughput drug screening using these SPS. The effects of candidate compounds were assessed in vitro and in vivo. We successfully generated breast cancer SPS with stem-like properties. These SPS were enriched for CD44high (2.8-fold) and CD24low (4-fold) cells. OCT4 and ABCG2 were overexpressed in SPS. Moreover, SPS grew tumors at a density of 103, whereas an equivalent number of parental cells did not initiate tumor formation. A clinically approved drug, niclosamide, was identified from the LOPAC chemical library of 1,258 compounds. Niclosamide downregulated stem pathways, inhibited the formation of spheroids, and induced apoptosis in breast cancer SPS. Animal studies also confirmed this therapeutic effect. The results of this proof-of-principle study may facilitate the development of new breast cancer therapies in the near future. The extension of niclosamide clinical trials is warranted.

Background Dendritic cells (DCs) are major modulators in the immune system. One active field of research is the manipulation of DCs as pharmacological targets to screen novel biological modifiers for the treatment of inflammatory and autoimmune disorders. Acetylcorynoline is the major alkaloid component derived from Corydalis bungeana herbs. We assessed the capability of acetylcorynoline to regulate lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated activation of mouse bone marrow-derived DCs. Methodology/Principal Findings Our experimental data showed that treatment with up to 20 µM acetylcorynoline does not cause cytotoxicity in cells. Acetylcorynoline significantly inhibited the secretion of tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, and interleukin-12p70 by LPS-stimulated DCs. The expression of LPS-induced major histocompatibility complex class II, CD40, and CD86 on DCs was also decreased by acetylcorynoline, and the endocytic capacity of LPS-stimulated DCs was restored by acetylcorynoline. In addition, LPS-stimulated DC-elicited allogeneic T-cell proliferation was blocked by acetylcorynoline, and the migratory ability of LPS-stimulated DCs was reduced by acetylcorynoline. Moreover, acetylcorynoline significantly inhibits LPS-induced activation of IκB kinase and mitogen-activated protein kinase. Importantly, administration of acetylcorynoline significantly attenuates 2,4-dinitro-1-fluorobenzene-induced delayed-type hypersensitivity. Conclusions/Significance Acetylcorynoline may be one of the potent immunosuppressive agents through the blockage of DC maturation and function.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Little is known about the involvement of the soluble form of receptor for advanced glycation end products (sRAGE) in acute ischemic stroke (IS). Here, we aim to identify the role of plasma sRAGE and high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) in imaging-confirmed IS patients, as well as mice subjected to focal ischemic stroke. METHODS AND RESULTS IS patients were recruited and plasma samples were collected for the measurement of sRAGE and HMGB1 after stroke. The relation of sRAGE and HMGB1 with acute IS was also investigated in a C57BL/6J mouse model of focal ischemic stroke and primary cortical neurons subjected to oxygen and glucose deprivation. Plasma levels of sRAGE and HMGB1 were both significantly increased within 48 hours after IS, and the sRAGE level was an independent predictor of functional outcome at 3 months poststroke. Immunoprecipitation assays revealed that the binding of plasma HMGB1 to sRAGE increased progressively after IS both in patients and mice. Administration of recombinant sRAGE significantly reduced infiltrating immune cells and improved the outcome of injury in mice, protected cultured neurons against oxygen and glucose deprivation-induced cell death, and ameliorated the detrimental effect of recombinant HMGB1. CONCLUSIONS Early poststroke plasma sRAGE may play a protective role in IS by capturing HMGB1. Hence, recombinant sRAGE is a potential therapeutic agent in acute IS.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: We previously showed in HER2+ models of breast cancer (BC) that potent inhibition of the HER receptor layer can lead to re-expression of estrogen receptor (ER) or activation of the ER pathway. Consequently, the anti-apoptotic ER gene product Bcl2 is upregulated, resulting in enhanced tumor cell survival and treatment resistance. In this study, we investigated whether Bcl2 and ER expression levels are simultaneously increased by neoadjuvant treatment with the dual HER1/2 tyrosine kinase inhibitor lapatinib in HER2+ BC patients.
Methods: In a neoadjuvant phase II clinical trial 49 HER2+ BC patients were treated with lapatinib as a single agent for 6 weeks, followed by trastuzumab/docetaxel for 12 weeks before surgery. Tumor specimens were prospectively collected at different time-points during lapatinib treatment (baseline, and weeks 2 and 4). Bcl2, ER, progesterone receptor (PR), total (t) and phosphorylated (p)-HER2, and Ki67 were assessed by immunohistochemistry. Spearman correlation was used to evaluate the association among the biomarkers at baseline, and the correlation of their changes over time. Fisher's Exact test and non-parametric Wilcoxon rank sum test were used respectively to determine if the frequency and the magnitude of Bcl2 expression changes were associated with baseline ER status.
Results: 35/49 HER2+ tumor specimens (71%) were available for baseline evaluation of Bcl2 and ER. Of those, 12 (34%) were ER-positive (Allred score ≥ 3) and 23 (66%) ER-negative. Baseline Bcl2 expression correlated positively with ER (r = .75; p < .0001) and PR (r = .53; p = .0015), and inversely with t-HER2 (r = −.43; p = .0097). ER baseline expression correlated positively with PR (r = .57; p = .0004), and inversely with t and p-HER2 (r = −.55; p = .0005, and r = −.37; p = .0282, respectively) and Ki67 (r = −.39; p = .0271). Bcl2 changes at week 2 (w2) positively correlated with changes in both ER and PR levels (r = .70; p = .0002 and r = .57; p = .0076, respectively). Additionally, the increase in Bcl2 expression, observed in 9 of the 23 (39%) tumors with tissue available at w2, was significantly more frequent (p = .0147) and of greater magnitude (p = .0001) in ER-pos vs. ER-neg tumors — 8/9 ER-pos tumors at w2 (including 3 converted from ER-neg by lapatinib) had increased Bcl2, while only 1 of the 14 (7%) ER-neg tumors (at baseline and w2) had increased Bcl2. The expression of ER itself at w2 also increased in 3 out of the 6 (50%) tumors which were originally ER-pos and had tissue available at w2, and in all of them Bcl2 increased in parallel. Of note, the single baseline ER-pos tumor that showed a reduction in ER at w2 had a parallel decrease in Bcl2. Similar observations or trends were found at week 4.
Conclusion: Our study suggests that Bcl2 is upregulated as a result of enhanced/restored ER activity upon anti-HER2 therapy with lapatinib in HER2+ tumors. This further supports the use of endocrine along with anti-HER-2 therapy to block this escape pathway which could otherwise cause treatment resistance. In addition, the ER re-expression with lapatinib treatment observed in this study emphasizes the need to re-biopsy HER2+/ER− patients receiving anti-HER2 therapy and to add endocrine therapy if the tumor becomes ER-positive.

Abstract
Zearalenone (ZEA) is an estrogenic mycotoxin. It is produced by several Fusarium species and can contaminate food and feed. To investigate the role of calcium homeostasis in ZEA-induced toxicity of poultry and elucidate its cytotoxic mechanism, splenic lymphocytes isolated from chickens were exposed to ZEA (0-25 μg/mL) for 48 h. The intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i), pH, calmodulin (CaM) mRNA levels, and Na+/K+-ATPase activities and Ca2+-ATPase activities were detected by the fluorescent dyes Fluo-3/AM and BCECF/AM, quantitative real-time PCR, and chromatometry. Supernatant CaM concentrations were simultaneously detected by ELISA. As the ZEA exposure concentration increased, the [Ca2+]i and CaM mRNA levels gradually increased, while intracellular pH, CaM concentrations of supernatants, and intracellular Na+,K+-ATPase and Ca2+-ATPase activities gradually decreased in a dose-dependent manner. There were significant differences (P<0.05 or P<0.01) between the treatment groups and the control group. These results indicate that ZEA cytotoxicity arises by causing an imbalance in calcium homeostasis and intracellular acidification in lymphocytes.

Abstract
DNA methylation is essential for adipose deposition in mammals. We screened SNPs of the bovine DNA methyltransferase 3b (DNMT3b) gene in Snow Dragon beef, a commercial beef cattle population in China. Nine SNPs were found in the population and three of six novel SNPs were chosen for genotyping and analyzing a possible association with 16 meat quality traits. The frequencies of the alleles and genotypes of the three SNPs in Snow Dragon beef were similar to those in their terminal-paternal breed, Wagyu. Association analysis disclosed that SNP1 was not associated with any of the traits; SNP2 was significantly associated with lean meat color score and chuck short rib score, and SNP3 had a significant effect on dressing percentage and back-fat thickness in the beef population. The individuals with genotype GG for SNP2 had a 25.7% increase in lean meat color score and a 146% increase in chuck short rib score, compared with genotype AA. The cattle with genotype AG for SNP3 had 35.7 and 24% increases in dressing percentage and 28.8 and 29.2% increases in back-fat thickness, compared with genotypes GG and AA, respectively. Genotypic combination analysis revealed significant interactions between SNP1 and SNP2 and between SNP2 and SNP3 for the traits rib-eye area and live weight. We conclude that there is considerable evidence that DNMT3b is a determiner of beef quality traits.

Abstract
Analysis of nanoparticles is often challenging especially when they are embedded in a matrix. Hence, we have used laser-assisted atom probe tomography (APT) to analyze the Au nanoclusters synthesized in situ using ion-beam implantation in a single crystal MgO matrix. APT analysis along with scanning transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy (STEM-EDX) indicated that the nanoparticles have an average size ~8-12 nm. While it is difficult to analyze the composition of individual nanoparticles using STEM, APT analysis can give three-dimensional compositions of the same. It was shown that the maximum Au concentration in the nanoparticles increases with increasing particle size, with a maximum Au concentration of up to 50%.

Abstract
A recent hypothesis for cancer chemoresistance posits that cytotoxic survival of a subpopulation of tumor progenitors drives the propagation of recurrent disease, underscoring the need for new therapeutics that target such primitive cells. To discover such novel compounds active against drug-resistant ovarian cancer, we identified a subset of chemoresistant ovarian tumor cells fulfilling current definitions of cancer-initiating cells from cell lines and patient tumors using multiple stemness phenotypes, including the expression of stem cell markers, membrane dye efflux, sphere formation, potent tumorigenicity, and serial tumor propagation. We then subjected such stem-like ovarian tumor-initiating cells (OTIC) to high-throughput drug screening using more than 1,200 clinically approved drugs. Of 61 potential compounds preliminarily identified, more stringent assessments showed that the antihelmintic niclosamide selectively targets OTICs in vitro and in vivo. Gene expression arrays following OTIC treatment revealed niclosamide to disrupt multiple metabolic pathways affecting biogenetics, biogenesis, and redox regulation. These studies support niclosamide as a promising therapy for ovarian cancer and warrant further preclinical and clinical evaluation of this safe, clinically proven drug for the management of this devastating gynecologic malignancy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Moderate differences in efficacy between adjuvant chemotherapy regimens for breast cancer are plausible, and could affect treatment choices. We sought any such differences. METHODS We undertook individual-patient-data meta-analyses of the randomised trials comparing: any taxane-plus-anthracycline-based regimen versus the same, or more, non-taxane chemotherapy (n=44,000); one anthracycline-based regimen versus another (n=7000) or versus cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, and fluorouracil (CMF; n=18,000); and polychemotherapy versus no chemotherapy (n=32,000). The scheduled dosages of these three drugs and of the anthracyclines doxorubicin (A) and epirubicin (E) were used to define standard CMF, standard 4AC, and CAF and CEF. Log-rank breast cancer mortality rate ratios (RRs) are reported. FINDINGS In trials adding four separate cycles of a taxane to a fixed anthracycline-based control regimen, extending treatment duration, breast cancer mortality was reduced (RR 0·86, SE 0·04, two-sided significance [2p]=0·0005). In trials with four such extra cycles of a taxane counterbalanced in controls by extra cycles of other cytotoxic drugs, roughly doubling non-taxane dosage, there was no significant difference (RR 0·94, SE 0·06, 2p=0·33). Trials with CMF-treated controls showed that standard 4AC and standard CMF were equivalent (RR 0·98, SE 0·05, 2p=0·67), but that anthracycline-based regimens with substantially higher cumulative dosage than standard 4AC (eg, CAF or CEF) were superior to standard CMF (RR 0·78, SE 0·06, 2p=0·0004). Trials versus no chemotherapy also suggested greater mortality reductions with CAF (RR 0·64, SE 0·09, 2p<0·0001) than with standard 4AC (RR 0·78, SE 0·09, 2p=0·01) or standard CMF (RR 0·76, SE 0·05, 2p<0·0001). In all meta-analyses involving taxane-based or anthracycline-based regimens, proportional risk reductions were little affected by age, nodal status, tumour diameter or differentiation (moderate or poor; few were well differentiated), oestrogen receptor status, or tamoxifen use. Hence, largely independently of age (up to at least 70 years) or the tumour characteristics currently available to us for the patients selected to be in these trials, some taxane-plus-anthracycline-based or higher-cumulative-dosage anthracycline-based regimens (not requiring stem cells) reduced breast cancer mortality by, on average, about one-third. 10-year overall mortality differences paralleled breast cancer mortality differences, despite taxane, anthracycline, and other toxicities. INTERPRETATION 10-year gains from a one-third breast cancer mortality reduction depend on absolute risks without chemotherapy (which, for oestrogen-receptor-positive disease, are the risks remaining with appropriate endocrine therapy). Low absolute risk implies low absolute benefit, but information was lacking about tumour gene expression markers or quantitative immunohistochemistry that might help to predict risk, chemosensitivity, or both. Abstract
The role of aldehyde dehydrogenase 1 (ALDH1) as an ovarian cancer stem cell marker and its clinical significance have rarely been explored. We used an Aldefluor assay to isolate ALDH1-bright (ALDH1(br)) cells from epithelial ovarian cancer cell lines and characterized the properties of the stem cells. ALDH1(br) cells were enriched in ES-2 (1.3%), TOV-21G (1.0%), and CP70 (1.2%) cells. Both ALDH1(br) and ALDH1(low) cells repopulated stem cell heterogeneity, formed spheroids, and grew into tumors in immunocompromised mice, although these processes were more efficient in ALDH1(br) cells. In the ES-2 and CP70 cells, ALDH1(br) cells conferred more chemoresistance, and were more enriched in CD44 (by 1.74-fold and 5.18-fold, respectively) than in CD133 (by 1.39-fold and 1.17-fold, respectively), compared with ALDH1(low) cells. Immunohistochemical staining for ALDH1 on a tissue microarray containing 84 epithelial ovarian cancer samples revealed that patients with higher ALDH1 expression (>50%) had poor overall survival, compared with those with lower ALDH1 (P = 0.004) and yielded an odds ratio of death of 2.43 (95% CI = 1.12 to 5.28) by multivariate analysis. The results did not support ALDH1 alone as an ovarian cancer stem cell marker, but demonstrated that ALDH1 is associated with CD44 expression, chemoresistance, and poor clinical outcome. The use of a combination of ALDH1 with other stem cell markers may help define ovarian cancer stem cells more stringently.

Abstract
To implement any effective odour and corrosion control technology in the sewer network, it is imperative that the airflow through gravity sewer airspaces be quantified. This paper presents a full dynamic airflow model for gravity sewer systems. The model, which is developed using the finite element method, is a compressible air transport model. The model has been applied to the North Head Sewerage Ocean Outfall System (NSOOS) and calibrated using the air pressure and airflow data collected during October 2008. Although the calibration is focused on forced ventilation, the model can be applied to natural ventilation as well.

Abstract
Simulation models (SMs) combine information from a variety of sources to provide a useful tool for examining how the effects of obesity unfold over time and impact population health. SMs can aid in the understanding of the complex interaction of the drivers of diet and activity and their relation to health outcomes. As emphasized in a recently released report of the Institute or Medicine, SMs can be especially useful for considering the potential impact of an array of policies that will be required to tackle the obesity problem. The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of existing SMs for obesity. First, a background section introduces the different types of models, explains how models are constructed, shows the utility of SMs and discusses their strengths and weaknesses. Using these typologies, we then briefly review extant obesity SMs. We categorize these models according to their focus: health and economic outcomes, trends in obesity as a function of past trends, physiologically based behavioural models, environmental contributors to obesity and policy interventions. Finally, we suggest directions for future research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Placing a totally implantable venous access device (TIVAD) using the classical subclavian vein puncture method carries the risk of certain complications including hemothorax, pneumothorax and pinch-off syndrome. We set out to determine whether percutaneous axillary vein catheterization can decrease the incidence of these complications. METHOD This is a prospective, observational, uni-institutional study. We analyzed the outcome of 113 TIVADs performed by ultrasound-assisted percutaneous axillary vein catheterization from Jun. 2008 to Dec. 2008. Junior residents novice to subclavian and axillary vein catheterization performed the procedures. Insertion and indwelling catheter complications were recorded. RESULT In our study population, 100% of TIVAD placements were successful. 27 patients (23.9%) required 3 or more repeated punctures; only one patient (0.9%) had clinically insignificant pneumothorax. Neither arterial puncture nor brachial plexus injury was recorded in our study. CONCLUSION Ultrasound-assisted percutaneous axillary vein catheterization for TIVAD is a safe and relatively simple method for inexperienced operators.
