Abstract
We study the generation of correlated photon pairs via spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) in a 15 cm long micro/nano-fiber (MNF). The MNF is properly fabricated to satisfy the phase-matching condition for generating the signal and idler photon pairs at wavelengths of about 1310 and 851 nm, respectively. Photon-counting measurements yield a coincidence-to-accidental ratio of 530 for a photon production rate of about 0.002 (0.0005) per pulse in the signal (idler) band. We also analyze the spectral information of the signal photons originating from SFWM and Raman scattering (RS). In addition to discovering some unique features of RS, we find the bandwidth of the individual signal photons is much greater than the calculated value for the MNF with homogeneous structure. Our investigations indicate the MNF is a promising candidate for developing the sources of nonclassical light and the spectral property of photon pairs can be used to noninvasively test the diameter and homogeneity of the MNF.

Abstract
Many plant leaves appear red in the autumn, and many papers have focused on the environmental factors and role of anthocyanin in this process. However few papers have examined the substances that are induced during this process. We hypothesised that excess sugar accumulation directly induces anthocyanin accumulation under autumn conditions. Using two methods (restricting phloem movement and exogenous sucrose feeding), we found that both surplus photosynthate and exogenous sucrose could induce anthocyanin biosynthesis, corresponding to up-regulation of several enzymes involved in anthocyanin biosynthesis (phenylalanine ammonia lyase, chalcone isomerase, dihydroflavonol 4-reductase and flavonoid 3-O-glucosyl transferase) and in transport (glutathione S-transferase). Our results suggest that excess carbohydrate may be the proximate trigger for induction of anthocyanin biosynthesis in autumn, but only when carbohydrates are accumulated for storage.

Abstract
The species boundaries and evolutionary relationships of two closely related genera, Megalobrama and Parabramis, were inferred from the partial mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene, NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 (ND2) gene and their concatenated segment. Phylogenetic reconstructions showed that among the three breams, Megalobrama amblycephala and Megalobrama skolkovii are more closely related to each other than either is to Megalobrama terminalis. The taxonomy of M. pellegrini should be reconsidered. The divergence time estimation based on the assumption of a global molecular clock indicated that speciation and dispersal of the two genera might have occurred at approximately Pliocene to Late Pleistocene, due to major paleo-environmental events associated with monsoon evolution and the formation of the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River.

Abstract
The negative affective state of opiate abstinence plays an important role in craving and relapse to compulsive drug use. The dopamine system participates in the reward effects of opiate use and the aversive effect of opiate abstinence. The amygdala is an essential neural substrate for associative learning of emotion. To establish a model of conditioned place aversion (CPA) in morphine-treated rats, we used different visual and tactual cues as conditioned stimuli (CS) within a conditioning apparatus. An injection of naloxone served as the unconditioned stimulus (US). The 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) lesion technique was used to investigate the effects of the dopaminergic system of the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) on naloxone-induced CPA. Rats were rendered physically dependent via administration of increasing doses of morphine delivered via intraperitoneal injection. Doses increased by 20 % each day for 14 days, starting from an initial dose of 6 mg/kg. All rats also received a low dose of naloxone (0.1 mg/kg) by injection 4 hours after morphine treatment on days 11 and 13 to induce CPA in a biased two-compartment conditioned place apparatus. Morphine-dependent rats with sham lesions were found to develop significant CPA after naloxone treatment. Bilateral 6-OHDA lesions of the CeA impaired the acquisition of CPA but had no effect on locomotor activity. These results suggest that the dopaminergic system of the CeA plays an important role in the negative affective state of opiate abstinence.

Abstract
In some European and North American countries where forestry is highly developed, both public and private forest ownership regimes have being existed for a long time. Currently, the researches about both the dynamics of forest landscape and habitat pattern and the relationship between habitat pattern and biological conservation in multi-ownership forest landscape are increasingly becoming important. This paper reviewed the effects of multi-ownership regime on forest landscape pattern and animal habitat and emphasized on the ecological consequences of forest parcelization and land divestiture, including the provision of diverse habitats and fragmentation of the existing large-area habitat. This paper also summarized two ways (changing the ownership pattern and integrating the multi-ownership management by cross boundary coordination) for handling the conflicts between small-scaled multi-ownership management and biological conservation at large scale in forestry-developed countries and analyzed the reasons that those countries prefer to adopt the latter one. Furthermore, the methodological limitations in simulating ownership pattern were pointed out. Finally, the present status, challenges and opportunities in the above-mentioned research issues in China were discussed, and the suggestions for further researches were provided.

Abstract
Protocadherins constitute a large family belonging to the cadherin superfamily; they function in various tissues of a wide variety of multicellular organisms. However, their functions and expression modes are still unknown in many of these species and tissues. We developed a fast and low-cost method to produce polyclonal antibody against chicken protocadherin 1 (Pcdh1) that could be used in assays for immunological assessment of protein expression levels of chicken Pcdh1. Primers were designed with DNAStar, using the nuclear sequence of pcdh1 as a template; the pcdh101 fragment was amplified, identified by sequencing and cloned into expression vectors pGEX-2TK and pET-32a, separately, resulting in 2 recombinant plasmids, pGEX-2TK-pcdh101 and pET-32a-pcdh101. These were confirmed by double-enzyme digestion and sequencing. The recombinant expression vectors were transformed and expressed in Escherichia coli BL21. The recombinant oligopeptides glutathione-S-transferase (GST)-Pcdh101 and (His)6-Pcdh101 fused with the carrier protein GST and (His)6 separately, and were purified. Rats were immunized by injecting the emulsified GST-Pcdh101 antigen subcutaneously into their hind footpads, followed by a booster injection after 2 weeks. One week after the booster, the sera were collected and examined for antibody titer by indirect ELISA. The optimal dilution of this antiserum was 1:300. The specificity of the antiserum was confirmed by Western blotting. This antiserum had good specificity and could be used to detect chicken Pcdh1 in Western blot analysis. This method allows production of specific rat polyclonal antisera for Western blots in less than 1 month at a relatively low cost.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The purpose of this study is to investigate the anti-osteoporotic effects of Radix Dipsaci total saponins (RTS). We showed that RTS was able to improve bone properties by either an increase of osteoblastic activity or a decrease in osteoclastic activity. INTRODUCTION Radix Dipsaci has long been used as an anti-osteoporotic drug. The present study investigates the anti-osteoporotic effects of RTS. METHODS Three-month-old female rats were randomly assigned into a sham-operated group (sham) and five ovariectomy (OVX) subgroups, namely, OVX with vehicle (OVX), OVX with 17β-ethinylestradiol (E(2)), and OVX with graded doses of RTS (50, 100, or 200 mg/kg/d). RTS and E(2) were administered orally, daily from 1 week after OVX treatment for 4 months. Bone mass, turnover, and strength were evaluated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, biochemical markers, and the three-point bending test. The trabecular bone microarchitecture was assessed by microCT. In vitro experiments were performed to determine the potential molecular mechanisms of the anti-osteoporotic effect of RTS. RESULTS RTS prevented the loss of bone mass induced by OVX. The preventive effect on bone loss was primarily indicated by decreasing levels of bone turnover markers and confirmed by the changes in urinary calcium and phosphorus excretion. The treatment also enhanced the biomechanical strength of bone and prevented the deterioration of trabecular bone microarchitecture. RTS induced MC3T3-E1 and primary osteoblastic cell maturation and differentiation and increased bone formation by increasing BMP-2 synthesis. In addition, RTS inhibited osteoclastogenesis through an increase in osteoprotegrin and a decrease in NF-kB ligand expression in vitro. CONCLUSIONS RTS treatment can effectively suppress the loss of bone mass induced by OVX and in vitro evidence suggests this could be through actions on both osteoblasts and osteoclasts.

Abstract
AIM Centromere protein H (CENP-H) is one of the essential components of the human active kinetochore which close links with carcinogenesis. Its expression and clinical value of prognostic prediction for gastric cancer (GC) is unclear. METHODS CENP-H and Ki-67 expressions in specimens from 166 patients with GC were determined by tissue microarrays and immunostaining. Their correlations between patients' clinicopathologic features and prognosis were explored. For mechanisms, quantitative CENP-H examination on gastric cancer tissue and cell lines was performed via real-time quantitative PCR and Western Blot. Its effect on Survivin expression and cell function was evaluated via CENP-H knocking down (SiRNA) or overexpression. RESULTS Highly expression of CENP-H was found in 85 of 166 GC, showing a significant correlation with tumour size, depth of infiltration, lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis and UICC staging of gastric carcinoma (P < 0.05), as well as clinical prognosis (coefficient = 0.550, P < 0.001). Multivariate analysis revealed that combined CENP-H and Ki67 expression was a more valuable independent prognostic predictor for patients' survival (hazard ratio, 2.18; P = 0.0109). Furthermore, total mRNA and protein expression of CENP-H in GC tissue and cell lines were noticeably increased. Survivin expression and cell function including growth, proliferation and clonogenic ability could be inhibited by CENP-H siRNA or enhanced by overexpressing CENP-H. CONCLUSION High expression of CENP-H in GC indicates poor prognosis and Survivin may mediate its procancer role. Combined evaluation of CENP-H and Ki-67 aids in predicting the clinical prognosis.

Abstract
A strikingly upregulated expressed sequence tag was screened from regenerating rat liver at 8 h in a 0-4-8-12 h short-interval successive partial hepatectomy model from a previous study. In the present study, a full-length open reading frame (ORF) corresponding to this expressed sequence tag was predicted through electronic cloning and was subsequently cloned from an 8-h rat regenerating liver and deposited in GenBank (accession No. HM448398). Sequence analysis of HM448398 and the predicted ORF revealed that the two ORFs may be different transcripts of a gene. The sequence of HM448398 was highly homologous to that of rat Serpina3n, suggesting that it may be a homolog of Serpina3n. The pGEX-2TK prokaryotic expression vector for this ORF was constructed, and the result of sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis manifested that the recombinant expression vector could express the glutathione-S-transferase-fused rat homolog of Serpina3n in an insoluble form in BL21. The target fusion protein was purified with affinity chromatography and was used as antigen to immunize rabbits for the production of polyclonal antibodies. Immunohistochemistry and real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed that the gene was highly expressed in the priming and termination phases of liver regeneration. These findings lay a solid foundation for further study of roles of HM448398 using knock-in and RNA interference methods during liver regeneration.

Abstract
We demonstrate almost octave-spanning cascaded four-wave mixing (CFWM) in optical microfibers. Pumped by two synchronized picosecond lasers at about 850 nm, microfibers with a length of 10-20 cm can generate CFWM spanning from a few hundred nanometers to almost one octave, depending on the diameter of the microfibers and the detuning between the two pumps. CFWM in microfibers, which has the advantages of easy fabrication, highly efficient coupling, relatively short length, and easy integration with fiber systems, can be used for applications in widely tunable multiline phase-sensitive amplification, multiwavelength coherent sources, and ultrashort pulse synthesis.

Abstract
We previously demonstrated that an anti-caries DNA vaccine intranasally administered with recombinant flagellin protein as a mucosal adjuvant enhanced salivary IgA response and conferred better protection against caries. However, the relatively weak immunogenicity of DNA vaccines and the necessity for a large quantity of antigens remain significant challenges. Here, we fused the flagellin derived from E. coli (KF) and target antigen PAc containing the A-P fragment of PAc from S. mutans (rPAc) to produce a single recombinant protein (KF-rPAc). The abilities of KF-rPAc to induce rPAc-specific mucosal and systemic responses and protective efficiency against caries following intranasal immunization were compared with those of rPAc alone or a mixture of rPAc and KF (KF + rPAc) in rats. Results showed that KF-rPAc promoted significantly higher rPAc-specific antibodies in serum as well as in saliva than did an equivalent dose of rPAc alone or a mixture of KF + rPAc. Intranasal immunization of 8.5 µg KF-rPAc could achieve 64.2% reduction of dental caries in rats. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that flagellin and PAc fusion strategy is promising for anti-caries vaccine development, and KF-rPAc could be used as an anti-caries mucosal vaccine.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Wenchuan earthquake was a catastrophic earthquake in China. The aim of this study is to explore longitudinally the rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression in adolescents after the Wenchuan earthquake, and to identify independent predictors of PTSD. METHOD PTSD and depression symptoms among adolescents at 6, 12 and 18 months after the Wenchuan earthquake were investigated using the PTSD Checklist Civilian Version and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Subjects in this study included 548 high school student survivors in a local boarding high school. RESULTS The rates of PTSD symptoms were 9.7%, 1.3% and 1.6% at the 6-, 12- and 18-month follow-ups, respectively. BDI scores were found to be the best predictor of severity of PTSD at 6, 12 and 18 months. Gender was another variable contributing significantly to PTSD at 6 and 12 months after the earthquake. In the 12-month follow-up, home damage was found to be a predictor of severity of PTSD symptoms. Being a child with siblings was found to be a predictor of severity of PTSD symptoms at 12 and 18 months after the earthquake. CONCLUSIONS PTSD symptoms changed gradually at various stages after the earthquake. Depression symptoms were predictive of PTSD symptoms in the 18-month follow-up study. Other predictors of PTSD symptoms included female gender and being a child with siblings. The results of this study may be helpful for further mental health interventions for adolescents after earthquakes.

Abstract
Although there is evidence suggesting genetic susceptibility for keloids, studies investigating the association between Arg72Pro polymorphism in the P53 gene and tendency to form keloids have given variable results. We made a meta-analysis of the effects of P53 Arg72Pro polymorphism on keloid risk in the Chinese population by conducting searches of the published literature in Pubmed, Embase, CBMdisc, and CNKI databases up to June 2011. Six studies were included in the meta-analysis, with a total of 359 keloid cases and 493 healthy controls. Meta-analysis results, respectively in the PCR-reverse dot blot and PCR-RFLP subgroups, showed significant associations between P53 Arg72Pro polymorphism and susceptibility to keloid in the comparisons of Pro allele vs Arg allele (odds ratio (OR) = 2.29, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.45-3.60; OR = 0.74, 95%CI = 0.56-0.98); Pro/Pro vs Pro/Arg + Arg/Arg (OR = 2.91, 95%CI = 1.88-4.53; OR = 0.54, 95%CI = 0.32-0.92); Pro/Pro vs Arg/Arg (OR = 2.79, 95%CI = 1.54-5.06; OR = 0.51, 95%CI = 0.28-0.92); Pro/Pro vs Pro/Arg (OR = 2.85, 95%CI = 1.75-4.63; OR = 0.57, 95%CI = 0.32-0.99). We conclude that the Pro allele of P53 Arg72Pro polymorphism is a risk factor for keloids in the Chinese population.

Abstract
AIM: To investigate the function of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and gamma-aminobutyric acid A receptor θ subunit (GABRQ) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
METHODS: Semiquantitative polymerase chain reaction was used for detecting the expression of GABRQ receptor among HCC cell line HepG2, normal liver cell line L-02, non-malignant Chang’s liver cells, 8 samples of HCC tissues and paired non-cancerous tissues. HepG2 cells were treated with GABA at serial concentrations (0, 1, 10, 20, 40 and 60 μmol/L), and their proliferating abilities were analyzed with the methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium assay, cell cycle analysis and tumor implanted in nude mice. Small interfering RNA was used for knocking down the endogenous GABRQ in HepG2. Proliferating abilities of these cells treated with or without GABA were analyzed.
RESULTS: We identified the overexpression of GABRQ in HCC cell lines and half of the tested HCC tissues. Knockdown of endogenous GABRQ expression in HepG2 attenuated HCC cell growth, suggesting its role in HCC cell viability. We studied the effect of GABA in the proliferation of GABRQ-positive cell lines in vitro and in vivo, and found that GABA increased HCC growth in a dose-dependent manner. Notably, the addition of GABA into the cell culture medium promoted the proliferation of GABRQ-expressing HepG2 cells, but not GABRQ-knockdown HepG2 cells, which means that GABA stimulates HepG2 cell growth through GABRQ.
CONCLUSION: GABRQ play important roles in HCC development and progression and could be a promising molecular target for the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies of HCC.

Ion irradiation experiments and atomistic simulations were used to demonstrate that irradiation-induced lattice swelling in a complex oxide, Lu2Ti2O7, is due initially to the formation of cation antisite defects. X-ray diffraction revealed that cation antisite formation correlates directly with lattice swelling and indicates that the volume per antisite pair is approximately 12 Å3. First principles calculations revealed that lattice swelling is best explained by cation antisite defects. Temperature accelerated dynamics simulations indicate that cation Frenkel defects are metastable and decay to form antisite defects.

Abstract
Our previous study revealed that spaceflight induced biological changes in human cervical carcinoma Caski cells. Here, we report that 48A9 cells, which were subcloned from Caski cells, experienced significant growth suppression and exhibited low tumorigenic ability after spaceflight. To further understand the potential mechanism at the transcriptional level, we compared gene expression between 48A9 cells and ground control Caski cells with suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) and reverse Northern blotting methods, and analyzed the relative gene network and molecular functions with the Ingenuity Pathways Analysis (IPA) program. We found 5 genes, SUB1, SGEF, MALAT-1, MYL6, and MT-CO2, to be up-regulated and identified 3 new cDNAs, termed B4, B5, and C4, in 48A9 cells. In addition, we also identified the two most significant gene networks to indicate the function of these genes using the IPA program. To our knowledge, our results show for the first time that spaceflight can reduce the growth of tumor cells, and we also provide a new model for oncogenesis study.

Abstract
Previous studies investigating the association between corneodesmosin (CDSN) polymorphisms and psoriasis risk have provided inconsistent results. The aim of our study was to clarify the effects of CDSN -619C/T polymorphism on psoriasis risk by conducting a meta-analysis. We conducted searches of the published literature in Pubmed and Embase databases up to October 2010. Six studies with a total of 842 psoriasis cases and 981 healthy controls were retrieved. Statistical analysis was performed with the programs Review Manager (version 5.0.24) and Stata (version 9.2). Meta-analysis results showed that there was no significant difference in CDSN -619C/T genotype distribution between psoriasis and control in the comparisons of C allele vs T allele, CC vs CT + TT, CC + CT vs TT, CC vs TT, and CC vs CT (respectively: OR = 1.28, 95%CI = 0.82-2.00, P = 0.28; OR = 1.33, 95%CI = 0.80-2.21, P = 0.28; OR = 1.23, 95%CI = 0.80-1.91, P = 0.35; OR = 1.41, 95%CI = 0.64-3.12, P = 0.40; OR = 1.30, 95%CI = 0.81-2.06, P = 0.27). In the subgroup analysis by ethnicity, results also showed no significant association between CDSN -619C/T polymorphism and susceptibility to psoriasis in both Caucasian and Asian populations. In conclusion, this meta-analysis suggests that CDSN -619C/T polymorphism may not be associated with susceptibility to psoriasis.

Abstract
China is in a critical period for the ownership reform of state-owned and collectively owned forests, which desiderates theoretical support and practical experience. However, the researches on the management modes of these forests and their ecological effects are scarce. In Europe and America, manifold ownership forest management has a long history, and relevant experts have made many researches on the ownership management contents and modes, as well as their effects on forest timber productivity, biodiversity, and landscape feature. To summarize and refer to these research harvests is definitely necessary and imminence for our forest ownership reform. This paper reviewed the management aims, modes, and ecological effects of state-owned and privately owned (industrial private and non-industrial private) forests, the parcelization and divestiture of forest ownership, and the associated protection policies of different ownership forests in the representative countries and regions in Europe and North America. The research prospect was also put forward.

Abstract
To timely and accurately acquire the spatial distribution pattern of wetlands is of significance for the dynamic monitoring, conservation, and sustainable utilization of wetlands. The small remote sensing satellite constellations A/B stars (HJ-1A/1B stars) for environmental hazards were launched by China for monitoring terrestrial resources, which could provide a new data source of remote sensing image acquisition for retrieving wetland types. Taking Liaohe Delta as a case, this paper compared the accuracy of wetland classification map and the area of each wetland type retrieved from CCD data (HJ CCD data) and TM5 data, and validated and explored the applicability and the applied potential of HJ CCD data in wetland resources dynamic monitoring. The results showed that HJ CCD data could completely replace Landsat TM5 data in feature extraction and remote sensing classification. In real-time monitoring, due to its 2 days of data acquisition cycle, HJ CCD data had the priority to Landsat TM5 data (16 days of data acquisition cycle).

Abstract
Use of anti-idiotype antibody vaccines is a promising strategy against tumor, however, their immunogenicity still need to be improved. Heat shock proteins (HSPs) have been shown to act as adjuvants when coadministered with peptides or given as fusion proteins and enhance the vaccination efficiency. To evaluate the enhancement of the potency of anti-idiotype antibody immunogenicity by heat shock protein gp96, C57BL/6 mice were immunized with three intramuscular inoculations of the G22 DNA and/or gp96 DNA vaccine. Control was inoculated with empty plasmid pcDNA3.1. The levels of G22-specific antibody and lymphocyte phenotype were measured by ELISA, fluorescence activated cell sorter (FACS) analysis, respectively. In the tumor protection experiment, the immunized mice were then challenged with CMT-93-G22 cells. The tumor size and the survival time of the animals were compared among these groups. The results showed that the efficacy of G22 DNA vaccine could be enhanced by coadministrating with gp96 DNA which might be relevant with activating CD8(+)T cells. Furthermore, co-injection of G22 DNA with gp96 DNA could prolong the survival time and lessen the tumor size of the CMT-93-G22-bearing mice. Our study demonstrates for the first time that G22+gp96 DNA vaccine can induce comparable G22-specific CD8(+)T cell response and is a promising candidate DNA vaccine for nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of 3-O-acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid (AKBA) on the proliferation, apoptosis and cell cycle of human acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cell line HL-60. HL-60 cells were treated by AKBA at various concentrations. The inhibitory effects of AKBA on the proliferation of HL-60 were analyzed by MTT assay. Morphologic changes of HL-60 cells were observed by fluorescence microscopy with Hochest33342 staining. Cell apoptosis rate was determined by flow cytometry with Annexin-V-FITC/PI double staining. The cell cycle was measured by flow cytometry with PI staining. The results showed that AKBA inhibited the proliferation of HL-60 and the apoptosis rate of HL-60 cells was gradually enhanced when AKBA dose increased. AKBA changed the cell cycle of HL-60, resulting in cell increase at G(1) phase and decrease at S phase. It is concluded that the AKBA has anti-proliferation and apoptosis-inducing effects on HL-60 cells, that seems a promising therapeutical approach for AML.
