Abstract
This study compared the therapeutic effects of two techniques for surgical decompression treatment for ulnar nerve entrapment at the elbow: subcutaneous transposition and modified submuscular transposition with Z-lengthening of the pronator teres origin. A total of 278 patients with ulnar nerve entrapment (McGowan grades I - III) were randomly assigned to undergo one of these techniques. All patients were followed-up for 2 years. The effects were assessed by preoperative and postoperative cross-sectional area, motor conduction velocity, sensory conduction velocity and nerve action potential. All of these parameters improved after surgery in both groups. For patients with grade I disease, there were no significant differences between the two techniques. For patients with grade II and III disease, modified submuscular transposition was associated with significantly greater improvements compared with subcutaneous transposition. In conclusion, subcutaneous ulnar nerve transposition is recommended for grade I patients and modified submuscular ulnar nerve transposition for grade II and III patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) is the leading cause of failure of surgery for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Although indirect evidence suggests that this disease might be autoimmune in nature, direct proof for this hypothesis is lacking. The purpose of this study was to determine in a murine model whether PVR can develop in the absence of T- or B-cell immunity. METHODS Four- to six-week-old Rag-1 gene knockout (KO) and congenic wild-type mice (WT) on the C57.Bl/6 background were studied. PVR was induced by intravitreal injection of 3 μl dispase at the concentration of 0.2 U/μl. PVR development was monitored by electroretinograms, the macroscopic observation of hemorrhage, cataract, retinal folds, and of an uneven iris, as well as the histological detection of epiretinal membranes on haematoxylin-eosin stained tissue. Additionally, immunofluorescence analysis was performed. These manifestations of PVR were assessed 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks after the intravitreal injection. RESULTS The data showed that the immune-deficient Rag-1 KO mice developed PVR with similar kinetics and severity as did the fully immune competent congenic WT mice. Carboxyfluorescein diacetate succinimidyl ester-labeled T cells that are specific for ovalbumin were detected in the inflamed vitreous and retina showing that T cells that are not specific for autoantigens present in the eye can migrate to PVR lesions. Therefore, the mere presence of T cells in PVR lesions does not imply an autoimmune pathogenesis. CONCLUSION This study suggests that T- and B-cell immunity is not essential for the induction of PVR.

Abstract
Human enterovirus 71 (EV71)-associated hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) has been a leading cause of childhood infection in China since 2008. Epidemic and molecular characteristics of HFMD have been examined in many areas of China, including the central and southern regions. However, clinical and genetic characterization of EV71 in the northeastern region of China is scarce. In this study, a series of analyses were performed on seven full-length EV71 sequences from HFMD patients who had either severe or mild disease. We have determined that these seven circulating EV71 viruses from Changchun, China are actually complex recombinant viruses involving multiple type A human enterovirus (HEV). Classified as EV71 subtype C4 (EV71 C4), these Changchun EV71 viruses contain genetic recombination events between the CA4, CA5, EV71B4 and EV71C1 strains. Most of the structural protein region (P1) of these viruses resembled that of the prototype EV71 C1 strains. The non-structural protein domains (P2 and P3) showed a high degree of similarity with CA4, CA5 and EV71 B4 in different regions. The 5′UTR had unclassified recombination, while partial 3D region of these viruses showed a high degree of similarity to CA16. Phylogenetic analysis of full-length or partial sequences of isolates from severe or mild disease patients in Changchun always formed a single cluster in various phylogenetic analyses of different genomic regions, suggesting that all seven strains originated from one single common ancestor. There was no correlation between viral genomic sequence and virulence. Thus, we found that circulating recombinant forms of EV71 are prevalent among HFMD patients in Northeastern China. The existence of a unique cluster of EV71 related viruses in Northeast China has important implications for vaccine development that would address the increasing prevalence of HFMD.

Abstract
Planning as satisfiability is a principal approach to planning with many eminent advantages. The existing planning as satisfiability techniques usually use encodings compiled from STRIPS. We introduce a novel SAT encoding scheme (SASE) based on the SAS+ formalism. The new scheme exploits the structural information in SAS+, resulting in an encoding that is both more compact and efficient for planning. We prove the correctness of the new encoding by establishing an isomorphism between the solution plans of SASE and that of STRIPS based encodings. We further analyze the transition variables newly introduced in SASE to explain why it accommodates modern SAT solving algorithms and improves performance. We give empirical statistical results to support our analysis. We also develop a number of techniques to further reduce the encoding size of SASE, and conduct experimental studies to show the strength of each individual technique. Finally, we report extensive experimental results to demonstrate significant improvements of SASE over the state-of-the-art STRIPS based encoding schemes in terms of both time and memory efficiency.

Abstract
During long-term peritoneal dialysis (PD) the peritoneal membrane underlies processes of structural and functional reorganization mediated by high glucose and reactive glucose metabolites that are contained in PD solutions; this process is accompanied by increasing fibrosis. Mechanistically, the peritoneal damage is triggered by the interaction of advanced glycation end-products with their receptor; this is true for rodents as well as for humans. With this knowledge interventional strategies can be tested in rodent models, among them are the lipid soluble vitamin B1 analogue benfotiamine (BF) or detoxifying enzymes such as glyoxalase. Of additional interest is the finding that PD fluids do not only cause local but also systemic damage, in particular renal and cardiovascular. In the case of kidney damage, the intervention with BF was also successful. Taken together, PD can be regarded as a local model for long-term diabetes together with systemic aspects of damage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Control of bleeding remains key to successful hepatic resection. The present randomized clinical trial compared infrahepatic inferior vena cava (IVC) clamping with low central venous pressure (CVP) during complex hepatectomy using portal triad clamping (PTC). METHODS Consecutive patients undergoing complex hepatectomy were allocated randomly to PTC combined with infrahepatic IVC clamping or to PTC with low CVP. Primary outcome was blood loss during parenchymal transection. Secondary outcomes were intraoperative surgical and haemodynamic parameters, postoperative recovery of liver and renal function, postoperative morbidity and mortality, and duration of hospital stay. RESULTS Between January 2008 and September 2010, 192 patients were randomized. Compared with low CVP, infrahepatic IVC clamping significantly decreased blood loss during parenchymal transection (mean(s.e.m.) 243(158) versus 372(197) ml; P < 0·001), was associated with faster recovery of liver function, and caused less impairment in renal function and fewer haemodynamic changes. The degree of cirrhosis correlated positively with CVP (R(2) = 0·963, P = 0·019) and with infrahepatic IVC pressure (R(2) = 0·950, P = 0·025). For patients with moderate or severe cirrhosis, infrahepatic IVC clamping was more efficacious in controlling blood loss during parenchymal transection (mean(s.e.m.) 2·9(1·8) versus 6·1(2·4) ml/cm(2); P < 0·001). CONCLUSION PTC combined with infrahepatic IVC clamping is more efficacious in controlling bleeding during complex hepatectomy than PTC with low CVP, especially in patients with moderate to severe cirrhosis. Abstract
AIMS To determine the prevalence of carriage of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) among dogs with pyoderma from two small animal hospitals in North China during a 21-month period and to characterize these isolates. METHODS AND RESULTS Swabs were taken from 260 dogs with pyoderma, and the staphylococcal species isolated and methicillin resistance were confirmed phenotypically and genotypically. The identified MRSP isolates were characterized by multilocus sequence typing (MLST), spa typing, staphylococcal cassette chromosome (SCC) mec typing, testing for susceptibility to nine antimicrobial agents and SmaI-digested pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Thirty-three (12·7%) dogs were positive for MRSP. The most prevalent genotypes detected among MRSP were ST71(MLST)-t06(spa)-II-III(SCCmec) (n = 22, 66·7%), followed by ST5-t19 (n = 8, 24·2%), ST126-III(n = 2, 6·1%) and ST6-t02-V (3·0%). All MRSP isolates showed extended resistance to tested antimicrobial agents. Eight different SmaI patterns were observed in 21 typeable MRSP isolates. CONCLUSIONS Clinical isolates of MSRP isolated from dogs in North China belonged to two major clonal lineages ST71 and ST5. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This study is the first report on MRSP from canine pyoderma in China. Further surveillance study is needed to gain more detailed data concerning this major clinical challenge in veterinary medicine.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To describe the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of 2009 H1N1 influenza, particularly the incubation period and the duration of symptoms, and to assess the public health response to this outbreak. STUDY DESIGN A retrospective cohort study was conducted among all students and employees in a middle school by telephone survey and laboratory inspection. METHODS Nasopharyngeal specimens were collected and tested, and real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction testing was performed to confirm the viral infection. The epidemiological and clinical characteristics were obtained through a telephone survey, and the incubation period and the duration of symptoms associated with 2009 H1N1 influenza were estimated by parametric distribution. RESULTS In total, 253 cases of influenza-like illness were found among students and employees, and 79 of these cases were confirmed as H1N1 infection through laboratory inspection. The response rate for the telephone survey was 93.48% for the students (2586/2768) and 85.87% for the employees (158/184). The average attack rate was 9.22% (253/2744). The main reported symptoms were fever (100%), cough (74.68%), sore throat (59.49%), headache (56.96%) and myalgia/arthralgia (51.90%). No complications were reported and no deaths occurred. The confirmed and suspected cases had no associated travel history or contact with a confirmed or probable case. The estimated median incubation period was 1.6 days [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.2-2.3]. The duration of symptoms was 3-11 days, and the median duration of symptoms was 7.5 days (95% CI 4.5-10.5). CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that the outbreak of 2009 H1N1 influenza in this middle school was widespread but not severe. The natural history of 2009 H1N1 influenza virus appears to be similar to that of previously circulating pandemic and interpandemic influenza viruses. The public health response indicates that school closure could have a substantial impact on the spread of 2009 H1N1 influenza.

Abstract
Osteoblasts, the bone-forming cells, respond to various mechanical forces, such as stretch and fluid shear force in essentially similar ways. The cytoskeleton, as the load-bearing architecture of the cell, is sensitive to altered inertial forces. Disruption of the cytoskeleton will result in alteration of cellular structure and function. However, it is difficult to quantitatively illustrate cytoskeletal rearrangement because of the complexity of cytoskeletal structure. Usually, the morphological changes in actin organization caused by external stimulus are basically descriptive. In this study, fractal dimensions (D) analysis was used to quantify the morphological changes in the actin cytoskeleton of osteoblast-like cells (MC3T3-E1) under simulated microgravity using 3-D/2-D clinostats. The ImageJ software was used to count the fractal dimension of actin cytoskeleton by box-counting methods. Real-time PCR and immunofluroscent assays were used to further confirm the results obtained by fractal dimension analysis. The results showed significant decreases in D value of actin cytoskeleton, β-actin mRNA expression, and the mean fluorescence intensity of F-actin in osteoblast-like cells after 24 or 48 h of incubation under 3-D/2-D clinorotation condition compared with control. The findings indicate that 3-D/2-D clinorotation affects both actin cytoskeleton architecture and mRNA expression, and fractal may be a promising approach for quantitative analysis of the changes in cytoskeleton in different environments.

Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex immune disease. The genetic variation in the B lymphoid tyrosine kinase (BLK) gene was found to associate with SLE in Caucasian population. However, the association of rs13277113 and rs4840568 with SLE was not extensively studied in Chinese population. In this study, we aim to test the association of SNP rs13277113 and rs4840568 with the disease risk of SLE in Chinese mainland population. A total of 532 patients with SLE and 576 controls were recruited. Unlabelled probe-based high-resolution melting analysis (HRMA) was used in genotyping. HRMA with unlabelled probe successfully distinguished all genotypes. Significant differences were observed in both genotype and allele frequencies for rs13277113 and rs4840568. Minor alleles of rs13277113 (P = 4.2E-05, odds ratio [OR] 0.66, [95% CI 0.54-0.81]) and rs4840568 (P = 7.1E-05, OR 0.67, [95% CI 0.55-0.82]) were found to be protective against SLE. Polymorphisms of rs13277113 and rs4840568 in BLK gene were associated with SLE in Chinese population.

Abstract
Epidermal growth factor receptor gene (EGFR) mutations are among the best predictive markers of the efficacy of EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor (EGFR-TKI) treatment. Mutations in the EGFR gene confer sensitivity to EGFR-TKIs in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This study determined the concordance rate of EGFR mutations in serum samples and tumour tissue from Chinese patients with advanced NSCLC and compared two detection methods: mutant-enriched polymerase chain reaction-based DNA sequencing and non-enriched sequencing. The EGFR mutation status in serum was consistent with that in paired tumour samples, with a concordance rate of 93.1% for mutant-enriched sequencing. In serum samples, mutant-enriched sequencing demonstrated sensitivity and specificity of 77.8% and 100%, respectively, and was more sensitive than the non-enriched assay. Mutant-enriched sequencing in serum may provide a non-invasive and sensitive method for detecting EGFR mutation status in patients with unresectable NSCLC.

Abstract
The glutamatergic system has been implicated in the pathophysiology of depression and the mechanism of action of antidepressants. Leptin, an adipocyte-derived hormone, has antidepressant-like properties. However, the functional role of leptin receptor (Lepr) signaling in glutamatergic neurons remains to be elucidated. In this study, we generated conditional knockout mice in which the long form of Lepr was ablated selectively in glutamatergic neurons located in the forebrain structures, including the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex (Lepr cKO). Lepr cKO mice exhibit normal growth and body weight. Behavioral characterization of Lepr cKO mice reveals depression-like behavioral deficits, including anhedonia, behavioral despair, enhanced learned helplessness and social withdrawal, with no evident signs of anxiety. In addition, loss of Lepr in forebrain glutamatergic neurons facilitates NMDA-induced hippocampal long-term synaptic depression (LTD), whereas conventional LTD or long-term potentiation (LTP) was not affected. The facilitated LTD induction requires activation of the GluN2B subunit as it was completely blocked by a selective GluN2B antagonist. Moreover, Lepr cKO mice are highly sensitive to the antidepressant-like behavioral effects of the GluN2B antagonist but resistant to leptin. These results support important roles for Lepr signaling in glutamatergic neurons in regulating depression-related behaviors and modulating excitatory synaptic strength, suggesting a possible association between synaptic depression and behavioral manifestations of depression.

Abstract
In this work, zinc was incorporated into TiO2 coatings on titanium by plasma electrolytic oxidation to obtain the implant with good bacterial inhibition ability and bone-formability. The porous and nanostructured Zn-incorporated TiO2 coatings are built up from pores smaller than 5 μm and grains 20-100 nm in size, in which the element Zn exists as ZnO. The results obtained from the antibacterial studies suggest that the Zn-incorporated TiO2 coatings can greatly inhibit the growth of both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, and the ability to inhibit bacteria can be improved by increasing the Zn content in the coatings. Moreover, the in vitro cytocompatibility evaluation demonstrates that the adhesion, proliferation and differentiation of rat bone marrow stem cells (bMSC) on Zn-incorporated coatings are significantly enhanced compared with Zn-free coating and commercially pure Ti plate, and no cytotoxicity appeared on any of the Zn-incorporated TiO2 coatings. Moreover, bMSC express higher level of alkaline phosphatase activity on Zn-incorporated TiO2 coatings and are induced to differentiate into osteoblast cells. The better antibacterial activity, cytocompatibility and the capability to promote bMSC osteogenic differentiation of Zn-incorporated TiO2 coatings may be attributed to the fact that Zn ions can be slowly and constantly released from the coatings. In conclusion, innovative Zn-incorporated TiO2 coatings on titanium with excellent antibacterial activity and biocompatibility are promising candidates for orthopedic and dental implants.

Abstract
Single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were dispersed in water and attached to nylon fabrics by a dip-drying procedure; scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy suggest the attachment of the SWCNTs. The electrical resistance of the functionalized fabrics is found to be pH-dependent, which is correlated with the quantity of SWCNTs dispersed in water at different values of pH. This can be further ascribed to the influence of the pK(a) of the acid (e.g., acetic acid in this study) used to tune pH. The acid may affect the dispersion of SWCNTs through two different mechanisms: (1) the free protons may protonate the amine and/or sulfonate group in the dye molecules, resulting in a variety of interactions among the dye molecules, SWCNTs and water molecules and (2) the resulting ions may increase the ionic strength of the solution, compressing the electric double layers of SWCNT colloids and thus impairing their stability. The former possibility is ruled out by data obtained using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible-near infrared spectroscopy; thus the latter is proposed to account for the experimental results. The colour strength of the functionalized fabrics increases with increasing pH, which is in agreement with their measured electrical properties.

Abstract
In order to investigate the characterization of runoff in storm sewer from various urban catchments, three monitoring systems at different spatial scales have been installed separately. They have been held since July 2010 in urban area of Beijing (China). The monitoring data revealed that chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and NH(3)-N values significantly exceed the Class V surface water quality standard developed by Ministry of Environmental Protection of the People's Republic of China (MEP). A surface solids buildup and wash off model for small watershed was adopted to analyze and discuss the process of a runoff pollutant discharge. More than a half of pollutant parameters presented a good fit to the model. However, a slightly worse-fit to the wash off model appeared in less than half of the data. Due to the influence of sewer sediments, sewer system characteristics, catchment characteristics, and other reasons, first flush was seldom observed in storm sewer runoff from these three survey areas. Meanwhile, the correlation between TSS and any other pollutant was analyzed according to cumulative load of pollutants in runoff events. An event mean concentrations (EMCs) approach was adopted to quantify the pollution of runoff. EMCs of various pollutants in storm sewer runoff between different rainfall events were slightly higher than the typical values observed in similar areas at home and abroad, according to other studies reported in literature. Based on quantitative analysis, it can be concluded that urban non-point source pollution is recognized as the major causes of quality deterioration in the receiving water bodies. This is after the point source pollution has been controlled substantially in Beijing. An integrated strategy, which combines centralized and decentralized control, along with the conditions of meteorology, hydrology, urban planning, existing drainage system, etc., will be an effective and economic approach to urban runoff pollution control.
