Abstract
Bone is one of the most important anatomical structures in humans and osteoporosis is one of the major public health concerns in the world. Osteoporosis is a main target disease of bone, which can be detected by medical image techniques. The purpose of this study is to develop a fully automated computer scheme to measure bone-mineral-density (BMD) values for vertebral trabecular bones. This scheme will aid osteoporosis diagnosis performed using computer tomography (CT) images. This scheme includes the following processing steps: segmentation of the bone region, recognition of the skeletal structures and measurement of the BMD value in vertebral trabecular bone of each vertebral body. The proposed scheme was applied to 20 X-ray torso CT cases to measure the BMD values for vertebral trabecular bones. The experimental results show that the mean and standard deviation of the difference between the BMD values measured by using the proposed method and those measured using a manual segmentation method were 6.93 mg/cm(3) and 6.82 mg/cm(3) respectively. The accuracy of the proposed scheme satisfied the requirement for a computer-aided system used in osteoporosis diagnosis.

Abstract
Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in both men and women in the United States. Anatomic lobectomy is the standard treatment and offers the best results for curative treatment of early stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). With an aging population, a significant proportion of patients are not surgical candidates at the time of diagnosis. In medically inoperable patients, standard external beam radiation has been offered as treatment, with suboptimal results. Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), a term coined by Leksell describes an approach using multiple convergent beams, precise localization with a stereotactic coordinate system, and rigid immobilization. It provides precise delivery of beams from multiple collimated paths which maximizes radiation delivery to the tumor, and minimizes the exposure of normal tissue. Early results with SRS are very encouraging, and prospective trials are underway in our institution and others to evaluate its role in early stage NSCLC. In article we review the role of stereotactic radiosurgery for the treatment of lung cancer.

Abstract
The use of tissue water as a concentration standard in proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H-MRS) of the brain requires that the water proton signal be adjusted for relaxation and partial volume effects. While single voxel (1)H-MRS studies have often included measurements of water proton T(1), T(2), and density based on additional (1)H-MRS acquisitions (e.g., at multiple echo or repetition times), this approach is not practical for (1)H-MRS imaging ((1)H-MRSI). In this report we demonstrate a method for using in situ measurements of water T(1), T(2), and density to calculate metabolite concentrations from (1)H-MRSI data. The relaxation and density data are coregistered with the (1)H-MRSI data and provide detailed information on the water signal appropriate to the individual subject and tissue region. We present data from both healthy subjects and a subject with brain lesions, underscoring the importance of water parameter measurements on a subject-by-subject and voxel-by-voxel basis.

Abstract
Converging lines of evidence demonstrate a vagally mediated antinociceptive pathway in animals undergoing acute visceral insults, the contribution of this system to visceral pain following chronic noxious stimuli is unknown. 5-HT(3) receptor (5-HT(3)Rs) on spinal afferents are crucially involved in nociceptive processing, the role of 5-HT(3)Rs on vagal afferents is unclear. The aim of the present study was to determine the contribution of vagal afferents to visceral nociception in rats undergoing chronic luminal allergen stimulation and whether it involves vagal 5-HT(3)Rs. Sensitized rats received chicken egg albumin (EA, 1 mg mL(-1)) in drinking water for 2 weeks (day 1-14). Visceromotor response (VMR) to colorectal distension [colorectal distension (CRD), 60 mmHg] and the levels of mRNA encoding 5-HT(3)R (including 3A and 3B subunits) in the nodose ganglia (NG) were evaluated on day 2, 4, 8 and 15. Chronic EA challenge induced gradually increased visceral nociception, with a peak on day 15. Subdiaphragmatic vagotomy or functional deafferentation with capsaicin abolished this time-dependent manner, inducing hyperalgesia from day 2, lasting to day 15. Intraluminal infusion of a 5-HT(3)R antagonist (granisetron), whether alone or infused after local mucosa anaesthetic with 1% lidocaine, mimicked the effects of vagotomy. The mRNA levels for 5-HT(3B) or 5-HT(3A) subunit in the NG showed an opposite time-course to that of visceral pain, which increased from day 2, then decreased gradually to levels lower than those of controls. Our results demonstrate a time-dependent vagal afferent modulation of chronic allergen-sensitized visceral hyperalgesia, which may involve a 5-HT(3)R pathway.

Abstract
We present a novel Bayesian topic model for learning discourse-level document structure. Our model leverages insights from discourse theory to constrain latent topic assignments in a way that reflects the underlying organization of document topics. We propose a global model in which both topic selection and ordering are biased to be similar across a collection of related documents. We show that this space of orderings can be effectively represented using a distribution over permutations called the Generalized Mallows Model. We apply our method to three complementary discourse-level tasks: cross-document alignment, document segmentation, and information ordering. Our experiments show that incorporating our permutation-based model in these applications yields substantial improvements in performance over previously proposed methods.

Abstract
We report the Hall resistivity, ρ(xy), of polycrystalline SmFeAsO(1-x)F(x) for four different fluorine concentrations from the onset of superconductivity through the collapse of the structural phase transition. For the two more highly doped samples, ρ(xy) is linear in magnetic field up to 50 T with only weak temperature dependence, reminiscent of a simple Fermi liquid. For the lightly doped samples with x<0.15, we find a low temperature regime characterized as ρ(xy)(H) being both nonlinear in magnetic field and strongly temperature-dependent even though the Hall angle is small. The onset temperature for this nonlinear regime is in the vicinity of the structural phase (SPT)/magnetic ordering (MO) transitions. The temperature dependence of the Hall resistivity is consistent with a thermal activation of carriers across an energy gap. The evolution of the energy gap with doping is reported.

Abstract. During pituitary gland development, the actions of transcription factors control the development of the hormone-producing cell types. Defects in transcription factor genes, including PIT1/POU1F1, PROP1, GLI2, HESX1, LHX3, and LHX4, are associated with combined pituitary hormone deficiency (CPHD) (SAVAGE et al. 2007). Removal of the mouse GLI2 gene by targeted disruption leads to an embryonic lethal phenotype with defects in early brain and spinal cord development, which include absence of the floor plate (MATISE et al. 1998). At present, no polymorphisms of GLI2 gene have been reported in bovine. In the present paper, partial 5’ flanking region, coding region and partially introns of GLI2 were screened to detect the SNPs in Chinese cattle breeds.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Potency, immunogenicity, and toxicity are three problems that limit the use of targeted toxins in solid tumour therapy. METHODS To address potency, we used genetic engineering to develop a novel bispecific ligand-directed toxin (BLT) called EGF4KDEL, a novel recombinant anti-mesothelioma agent created by linking human epidermal growth factor (EGF) and interleukin-4 (IL-4) to truncated pseudomonas exotoxin (PE38) on the same single-chain molecule. Immunogenicity was reduced by mutating seven immunodominant B-cell epitopes on the PE38 molecule to create a new agent, EGF4KDEL 7Mut. RESULTS In vitro, bispecific EGF4KDEL showed superior anti-mesothelioma activity compared with its monospecific counterparts. Toxicity in mice was diminished by having both ligands on the same molecule, allowing administration of a 10-fold greater dose of BLT than a mixture of monomeric IL4KDEL and EGFKDEL. EGF4KDEL 7Mut, retained all of its functional activity and induced about 87% fewer anti-toxin antibodies than mice given the parental, non-mutated form. In vivo, intraperitoneal (IP) injection of the BLT showed significant (P<0.01) and impressive effects against two aggressive, malignant IP mesothelioma models when treatment was begun 14-16 days post tumour innoculation. CONCLUSION These data show that EGF4KDEL 7Mut is a promising new anti-mesothelioma agent that was developed to specifically address the obstacles facing clinical utility of targeted toxins.

Abstract
Men who have sex with men receiving HIV care reported their sexual behaviours and their intentions, classified according to the Transtheoretical Model of Change, to modify the following behaviours: (1) condom use by partner type and activity type; (2) reduction of partner number; and (3) disclosure of HIV serostatus to partners. Most participants were white (68.8%) or black (29.5%) and were more likely to report unprotected sex with HIV-positive than with serodiscordant partners for most activities. Whites reported more partners than black patients (mean 4.1 versus 2; P < 0.0001) and black participants reported fewer HIV-negative (P = 0.0084) and -unknown status partners (P = 0.00095) than whites. Cocaine/crack use was associated with more sexual partners (P = 0.001) and more frequent unprotected sex with HIV-negative or -unknown status partners (P = 0.036). Readiness to change risk behaviour varied by partner status and type of sexual activity. Understanding patients' risks and their readiness to change behaviours may help providers to promote sexual health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The novel swine-origin influenza A H1N1 virus (S-OIV) causes the current pandemic. Its tissue tropism and replication in different cell lines are not well understood. OBJECTIVE Compare the growth characteristics of cell lines infected by S-OIV, seasonal influenza A H1N1 (sH1N1) and avian influenza A H5N1 (H5N1) viruses and the effect of temperature on viral replication. STUDY DESIGN Cytopathic effect (CPE), antigen expression by immunofluorescence (IF) and viral load profile by quantitative RT-PCR in 17 cell lines infected by S-OIV, sH1N1 and H5N1 were examined. Comparison of their replication efficiency in chick embryo was performed. The effect of temperature on viral replication in Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells was determined by TCID(50) at 33 degrees C, 37 degrees C and 39 degrees C for 5 consecutive days. RESULTS S-OIV replicated in cell lines derived from different tissues or organs and host species with comparable viral load to sH1N1. Among 13 human cell lines tested, Caco-2 has the highest viral load for S-OIV. S-OIV showed a low viral load with no CPE or antigen expression in pig kidney cell PK-15, H5N1 demonstrated the most diverse cell tropism by CPE and antigen expression, and the highest viral replication efficiency in both cell lines and allantoic fluid. All three viruses demonstrated best growth at 37 degrees C in MDCK cells. CONCLUSION Cell line growth characteristics of S-OIV, sH1N1 and H5N1 appear to correlate clinically and pathologically with involved anatomical sites and severity. Low replication of S-OIV in PK-15 suggests that this virus is more adapted to human than swine.

Abstract
The objects of this study were to investigate the effects of massage therapy during early life on postnatal growth, body composition, and skeletal development in juvenile and young adult rats. Massage therapy was performed for 10 minutes daily from D6 to D10 of postnatal life in rat pups (MT, n=24). Body composition, bone area, mineral content, and bone mineral density were measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA); bone strength and intrinsic stiffness on femur shaft were tested by three-point bending; cortical and cancellous bone histomorphometric measurements were performed at D21 and D60. Results were compared to age- and gender-matched controls (C, n=24). D21 body weight, body length, lean mass, and bone area were significantly greater in the MT cohort. Greater bone mineral content was found in male MT rats; bone strength and intrinsic stiffness were greater in D60 MT groups. At D60 MT treatment promoted bone mineralization by increasing trabecular mineral apposition rate in male and endosteal mineral surface in females, and also improved micro-architecture by greater trabeculae width in males and decreasing trabecular separation in females. In summary, massage therapy during early life elicited immediate and prolonged anabolic effects on postnatal growth, lean mass and skeletal developmental in a gender-specific manner in juvenile and young adult rats.
