Abstract
Collisions of fast atoms with surfaces at grazing incidence have been recently proposed as a promising new tool to determine surface parameters with unprecedented accuracy. Here we show, by means of classical dynamics calculations performed with first-principles six-dimensional potential energy surfaces for H2/NiAl(110) and H2/Pd(111) that, under grazing incidence conditions, fast light molecular projectiles are also useful to determine sticking probabilities at thermal energies, from the threshold up to the saturation limit. Thus they are the ideal complement to traditional experiments at thermal energies to determine sticking curves up to the saturation limit.

Abstract
The soils affected by the spill of a pyrite mine were analysed in 100 sampling points at three depths (0-10, 10-30, and 30-50 cm) in 1998 (after the tailings were removed), 1999 (after the cleaning of the highly contaminated areas), and 2004 (after the tilling of the upper 20-25 cm). The comparative study reveals that the removal of the tailings left a heterogeneous distribution pattern of the contaminants, with highly polluted spots alternating with less contaminated areas. The cleanup did not substantially lower the concentration in the highly polluted soils, and the spread of the pollutants increased the concentration in As and Pb in the uppermost 10 cm of 60% of the soils, while the Zn and Cd concentrations increased in only 30% of the soils. Given the high concentration of pollutants in the topsoil (especially As), the tilling of the upper 20-25 cm, despite reducing the average concentration of pollutants in the uppermost 10 cm, did not substantially lower the percentage of soils that exceeded the concentration of 40 mg As kg(-1) dry soil and almost doubled the percentage of soils that surpassed this concentration between 10 and 30 cm. Meanwhile, the displacement of Zn and Cd within the soil supported the reduction in the percentage of soils that in the upper 10 cm exceeded the reference concentrations of these elements (900 mg Zn kg(-1) dry soil and 2 mg Cd kg(-1) dry soil), and the percentage of soils exceeding these concentrations between 10 and 50 cm in depth did not increase. Six years after the spill and at the end of all remediation measures, the intervention levels defined by the Environmental Agency of the Regional Government of Andalusia for natural parks were exceeded in the uppermost 10 cm in 35% of the soils.

Abstract
Recent experiments on double photoionization of H2 with photon energies between 160 and 240 eV have revealed body-frame angular distributions that suggest classical two-slit interference effects may be present when one electron carries most of the available energy and the second electron is not observed. We report precise quantum mechanical calculations that reproduce the experimental findings. They reveal that the interpretation in terms of classical diffraction is only appropriate at substantially higher photon energies. At the energies considered in the experiment we offer an alternative explanation based on the mixing of two nondiffractive contributions by circularly polarized light.

Abstract
Abstract. The Caliope project funded by the Spanish Ministry of the Environment establishes an air quality forecasting system for Spain to increase the knowledge on transport and dynamics of pollutants in Spain, to assure the accomplishment of legislation and to inform the population about the levels of pollutants, topics in which the European Commission has shown a great concern. The present contribution describes the first quantitative verification study performed so far with two chemistry transport models (CMAQ and CHIMERE) for a reference year (2004) at medium spatial resolution (around 20×20 km for the Iberian Peninsula). Both models perform similarly in the case of ground-level ozone. The mean normalised gross error MNGE remains below 15–20% during summertime, when ozone episodes occur, outlining the good skills of the system concerning the forecasting of air quality in Spain. Furthermore, the ongoing developments of the system towards high resolution modelling (4×4 km for Spain, 12×12 km for Europe, 1 h temporal resolution) and the integration with observations within the Caliope umbrella are described.

Abstract
We have determined absolute charge transfer and fragmentation cross sections in He2++C60 collisions in the impact-energy range 0.1-250 keV by using a combined experimental and theoretical approach. We have found that the cross sections for the formation of He+ and He0 are comparable in magnitude, which cannot be explained by the sole contribution of pure single and double electron capture but also by contribution of transfer-ionization processes that are important even at low impact energies. The results show that multifragmentation is important only at impact energies larger than 40 keV; at lower energies, sequential C2 evaporation is the dominant process.

Abstract
We have calculated the electronic energies and optimum geometries of C(70) (q+) and C(68) (q+) fullerenes (q=0-14) by means of density functional theory. The ionization energies for C(70) and C(68) fullerenes increase more or less linearly as functions of charge, consistent with the previously reported behavior for C(60) and C(58) [S. Diaz-Tendero et al., J. Chem. Phys. 123, 184306 (2005)]. The dissociation energies corresponding to the C(70) (q+)-->C(68) (q+)+C(2), C(70) (q+)-->C(68) ((q-1)+)+C(2) (+), C(70) (q+)-->C(68) ((q-2)+)+C(+)+C(+), C(70) (q+)-->C(68) ((q-3)+)+C(2+)+C(+), and C(70) (q+)-->C(68) ((q-4)+)+C(2+)+C(2+) decay channels show that C(70) (q+) (like C(60) (q+)) is thermodynamically unstable for q>or=6. However, the slope of the dissociation energy as a function of charge for a given decay channel is different from that of C(60) (q+) fullerenes. On the basis of these results, we predict q=17 to be the highest charge state for which a fission barrier exists for C(70) (q+).

Abstract
The arsenic content in the province of Granada (SE Spain) was quantified, based on 93 soils at two different depths and their corresponding parent materials. The arsenic concentrations fit a log-normal distribution. Four different statistical procedures to estimate the arsenic background range in the region were tested. Upper background limits clearly exceeded limits reported for natural soils when based on the Tukey box plot or means and standard deviations of the dataset (M+/-2sdev) or of the calculated distribution function (Mf+/-2sigma) but not when based on median values (Md+/-2MAD). The relative cumulative frequency curve not only adequately estimates the background range but also delivers a clear and detailed visualisation of the data distribution and identifies subpopulations with specific background ranges related to combinations of parent materials and degree of soil development.

Abstract
We have analyzed in detail the structure of the smallest fullerenes C(n) (20 < or = n < or = 72) obtained in B3LYP/6-31G* calculations. All these systems, except for C60, C70, and C72, necessarily present adjacent pentagons in their structure. For the most stable classical isomers, we have studied the variation of bond distances, HOMO-LUMO gaps and enthalpies of formation with fullerene size. A classification of the bonds in 9 different motifs permits to gain insight in the factors determining the fullerene stability. A simplified model that assumes a fixed energy per bond is able to reproduce the calculated enthalpies of formation and to estimate the energy change associated with each structural motif. An extra stabilization of 30-40 kcal/mol is predicted for the fullerenes showing spherical aromaticity.

Abstract
AbstractAn experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of the main cereal (cooked maize or cooked rice) and the inclusion of cooked and expanded oat hulls (0, 20 or 40 g/kg) in the diet on total tract apparent nutrient digestibility (TTAD) and productive performance of piglets weaned at 21 days. Each of the six treatments was replicated eight times (five piglets penned together) and the trial lasted for 33 days. From 21 to 41 days of age piglets were given their respective experimental complex diets that contained 530 g/kg cooked cereal and from 41 to 54 days they received a common starter diet based on maize, barley and soya-bean meal. Growth promoters were not included in the diets. The TTAD was determined at 27 and 37 days of age and pig performance was measured at 31, 41 and 54 days of age. Nutrient digestibility increased with age (P<0·001) and in general were higher for rice- than for maize-based diets (P<0·001 for dry matter, organic matter and gross energy andP<0·05 for ether extract). From 21 to 41 days of age piglets given rice had higher food intake (FI,P<0·05) and average daily gain (ADG,P<0·01) than piglets given maize but food conversion ratio was not affected. The differences observed were maintained until the end of the trial. The inclusion of oat hulls in the diet did not affect TTAD of the nutrients but tended to reduce the incidence of diarrhoea from 21 to 41 days of age (P<0·1). Oat hulls inclusion reduced FI and ADG in diets based on maize but had the opposite effect in diets based on rice, indicating that piglets might have a minimum requirement for dietary fibre. It is concluded that cooked rice is an ingredient of choice in pre-starter diets for weanling pigs. Also, the inclusion of moderate levels of fibre as oat hulls reduces the incidence of diarrhoea and might improve productive performance in low fibre diets.

Abstract
We examine the origin of recently observed variations with internuclear distance (R) of the fully differential cross sections for double ionization of aligned H2 by absorption of a single photon. Using the results of fully converged numerical solutions of the Schrödinger equation, we show that these variations arise primarily from pronounced differences in the R dependence of the parallel and perpendicular components of the ionization amplitude. We also predict that R dependences should be readily observable in the asymmetry parameter for photodouble ionization, even in experimental measurements that are not differential in the energy sharings between ejected photoelectrons.

Abstract
H2, the smallest and most abundant molecule in the universe, has a perfectly symmetric ground state. What does it take to break this symmetry? We found that the inversion symmetry can be broken by absorption of a linearly polarized photon, which itself has inversion symmetry. In particular, the emission of a photoelectron with subsequent dissociation of the remaining H+2 fragment shows no symmetry with respect to the ionic H+ and neutral H atomic fragments. This lack of symmetry results from the entanglement between symmetric and antisymmetric H+2 states that is caused by autoionization. The mechanisms behind this symmetry breaking are general for all molecules.

Abstract
We present a theoretical study of fast-electron emission produced in H2 and H2+ photoionization. We show that, when the electron wave length is comparable to the molecular size, the electron angular distributions arising from fixed-in-space molecules exhibit pronounced interference effects that critically depend on orientation and energy sharing between electrons and nuclei. In particular, for molecules oriented parallel to the polarization direction, the angular patterns reveal a complex nodal structure, while for molecules oriented perpendicularly, typical Young's double-slit interferences are observed. These patterns change dramatically as the molecule vibrates.

Abstract
Histone methylation at specific lysine residues brings about various downstream events that are mediated by different effector proteins. The WD40 domain of WDR5 represents a new class of histone methyl-lysine recognition domains that is important for recruiting H3K4 methyltransferases to K4-dimethylated histone H3 tail as well as for global and gene-specific K4 trimethylation. Here we report the crystal structures of full-length WDR5, WDR5Delta23 and its complexes with unmodified, mono-, di- and trimethylated histone H3K4 peptides. The structures reveal that WDR5 is able to bind all of these histone H3 peptides, but only H3K4me2 peptide forms extra interactions with WDR5 by use of both water-mediated hydrogen bonding and the altered hydrophilicity of the modified lysine 4. We propose a mechanism for the involvement of WDR5 in binding and presenting histone H3K4 for further methylation as a component of MLL complexes.

Abstract
We have performed H2(D2) diffraction experiments on a Pd(110) surface using two different high-sensitivity set-ups. We have found that, although the total reflectivity of Pd(110) is comparable to that observed in other reactive systems, the corresponding H2(D2) diffraction patterns are quite different: no diffraction peak, including the specular one, is observed on Pd(110). This unexpected result is the consequence of dynamic trapping. Such interpretation is supported by classical dynamics calculations based on accurate ab initio potential energy surfaces.

Abstract
The structure, vibrational spectra and electronic properties of the neutral, singly and doubly charged C52 fullerenes were studied by means of the Hartree-Fock method and density functional theory. Different isomers were considered, in particular those with the lowest possible number (five or six) of adjacent pentagons, and an isomer with a four-atom ring. For neutral and singly charged species, the most stable isomer is that with the lowest number of adjacent pentagons, namely five. However, for C(52)2+, the most stable structure has six adjacent pentagons. This finding, which contradicts the pentagon adjacency penalty rule, is a consequence of complete filling of the HOMO pi shell and the near-perfect sphericity of the most stable isomer. The simulated vibrational spectra show important differences in the positions and intensities of the vibrations for the different isomers.

Abstract
We present a kinematically complete study of dissociative ionization of D(2) by 13.6 MeV/u S(15+) ions. The experiment allows us to unravel the competing mechanisms, namely, direct single ionization, autoionization of doubly excited states, ionization excitation, and double ionization, and to analyze the corresponding electron angular distribution from fixed-in-space molecules. The conclusions are supported by theoretical calculations in which the correlated motion of all electrons and nuclei and the interferences between them are described from first principles.

Abstract
We report ab initio calculations of H2 ionization by VUV/fs 10(12) W/cm2 laser pulses including correlation and all electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom (DOF). Inclusion of the nuclear DOF leads to a substantial increase of resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization. By varying pulse duration, it is possible to control the ratio of dissociative to nondissociative ionization as well as the final H+(2) vibrational distribution. For pulses longer than 10 fs and proportional to omega>0.46 a.u., dissociative ionization entirely dominates, which is a very unusual situation in photoionization studies.
