[Influences of naomaitong upon cerebral blood flow in dogs]

This experiment has proven that the drug naomaitong can synchronously increase the blood flow of both dog's internal carotid artery and vertebral artery and also can antagonize the decrease of blood flow of both arteries caused by pituitrin. The increase of blood flow of both internal carotid artery and vertebral artery due to administration of naomaitong (1.2 g/kg) through the dog's duodenum is approximately equal to the increase of blood flow of both arteries resulting from the intramuscular injection of papaverine (1 mg/kg). Besides, the dosage of naomaitong is positively correlated to the effect and action of the drug.

Surgical technique for combined liver/intestine transplantation in rats

Simultaneous liver transplantation may reduce the risk of intestinal transplant rejection. We have recently developed two new models of combined liver/intestine transplantation (LIT) in the rat to study this phenomenon. Herein, we report our experience with LIT using a single donor (SD) or multiple donors (MD). Large volumes of fluid were required to prevent a drop in the mean arterial pressure during the anhepatic phase in the SD recipients. Many of the SD recipients died of intraoperative hypovolemic shock (57%). The MD recipients had a shorter anhepatic time (12 +/- 1 minutes vs. 17 +/- 2 minutes; P less than 0.01) and a shorter warm intestinal ischemia time (15 +/- 1 minutes vs. 32 +/- 2 minutes; P less than 0.01). Operative mortality rates were much lower in the MD recipients (10% vs. 68%; P less than 0.01). The long-term survival rate using MD was 71% at 1 month. Graft function was normal in the long-term survivors. LIT with MD provides a good model to study the immunological effects of multivisceral grafting.

Overexpression of the c-erbB-2/neu–encoded p185 protein in primary lung cancer

The c-erbB-2/neu gene encodes a transmembrane protein of 185 kDa (p185) with tyrosine kinase activity and extensive sequence homology to epidermal growth factor receptor. Amplification and overexpression of the c-erbB-2/neu gene has been shown in certain human tumors and is postulated to be important in human carcinogenesis. High levels of expression of the c-erbB-2/neu gene have been reported in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell lines and primary tumors from the United States. Since geographical and cultural factors may contribute to the development of certain types of cancer, we examined p185 examined p185 expression in 120 tumors from Chinese patients with lung cancers of different cell types and used immunohistochemical staining to determine the extent and general significance of p185 expression in human primary lung cancer. Our results demonstrate that 58.8% of the NSCLCs expressed p185 and that expression of p185 was observed only in NSCLC and not in small-cell lung cancers. Thirty-three of 41 adenocarcinomas and 24 of 55 squamous cell carcinomas among the NSCLCs examined were found to express p185 at levels different from those of normal lung. For the squamous cell carcinomas, p185 expression was correlated with lymph node metastasis (P less than 0.01), but for the adenocarcinomas, it was not (P greater than 0.05). In addition, expression of p185 in NSCLC was significantly more frequent in patients in advanced clinical stages. Our findings indicate that p185 expression is a frequent event and a general phenomenon in NSCLC and is correlated with poor clinical prognostic indicators, suggesting that expression of p185 may be of potential prognostic importance in NSCLC.

Simultaneous pancreaticoduodenal and renal transplantation in one diabetic patient with end-stage renal disease

The diabetic patient with renal failure underwent simultaneous pancreaticoduodenal and renal transplantation. Duodeno-cystostomy was performed for the drainage of exocrine secretion. Immediately after grafting, the pancreatic and the renal graft regained normal function, and there was no operative complication whatever. The patient had functioning pancreatic graft and became insulin-independent for more than 3 months, although two transplanted kidneys were rejected. Immunosuppression consisted of cyclosporine A, azathioprine and prednisone. Our results suggest that hemorrheological parameters may serve as early indicators of acute rejection and be used to estimate the efficacy of anti-rejection and anti-coagulation therapy.

[Effect of the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis of a mixture of Hawthorn and Motherworn]

Two groups of cocks were divided into controls and medications. High lipid food was given to both groups. The medications were given mixture of Hawthorn and Motherworn. The effect on prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis with the mixture was observed. The results showed that cholesterol, beta-lipid protein, triglyceride, blood sugar, whole blood viscosity, plasma viscosity, electrophoresis of red cell and fibrinogen in the medications were statistically lower than that in the controls. The results confirms the effect of the mixture on the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis in the pathology section of coronary artery.

Treatment of Postmenopausal Breast Cancer with Bisbromoacetyl Hexestrol

Twenty five cases of advanced postmenopausal breast cancer patients were treated with bisbromoacetyl hexestrol 3 CR and 5 PR were achieved. The response rate was 32 %, and the average duration of remission 6 months. Vaginal bleeding was seen in 9 cases, 4 of whom were compelled to discontinue treatment.

The relationship between translucency of rice grain and gelatinization of starch in the grain during cooking

The soaked and nonsoaked rice grains were cooked by the excess water method and the steamer method, and subjected to Ranghino's test, X-ray diffraction, and microscopic observation. The starch granules in the nonsoaked rice were gelatinized at the same time as the grains became translucent during cooking. However, when the grains of medium amylose varieties and waxy rice were presoaked, the starch granules were not fully gelatinized in the translucent grains cooked for Ranghino's cooking time. The gelatinization of starch granules proceeded faster in the soaked rice and by the excess water method than that in the nonsoaked rice and by the steamer method. The cooking time and gelatinization time correlated negatively with the water content after soaking, and positively with the amylose content in the rice grains. The japonica rices were gelatinized fully in less than 20 min when the amount of water added for cooking was adequate.
