Abstract
The first measurement of the charged-particle multiplicity density at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair √ S NN = 2.76 TeV is presented. For an event sample corresponding to the most central 5% of the hadronic cross section, the pseudorapidity density of primary charged particles at midrapidity is 1584 ± 4(stat) ± 76(syst), which corresponds to 8.3 ± 0.4(syst) per participating nucleon pair. This represents an increase of about a factor 1.9 relative to pp collisions at similar collision energies, and about a factor 2.2 to central Au-Au collisions at √ S NN = 2.76 TeV. This measurement provides the first experimental constraint for models of nucleus-nucleus collisions at LHC energies.

Abstract
The ratio of the yields of antiprotons to protons in pp collisions has been measured by the ALICE experiment at sqrt[s]=0.9 and 7 TeV during the initial running periods of the Large Hadron Collider. The measurement covers the transverse momentum interval 0.45<p_{t}<1.05 GeV/c and rapidity |y|<0.5. The ratio is measured to be R_{|y|<0.5}=0.957±0.006(stat)±0.014(syst) at 0.9 TeV and R_{|y|<0.5}=0.991±0.005(stat)±0.014(syst) at 7 TeV and it is independent of both rapidity and transverse momentum. The results are consistent with the conventional model of baryon-number transport and set stringent limits on any additional contributions to baryon-number transfer over very large rapidity intervals in pp collisions.

Abstract
Epigenetic silencing of secreted frizzled-related protein (SFRP) genes, antagonists of the WNT pathway, contributes to the pathogenesis of several cancers including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We hypothesize that methylation analysis of SFRPs family could improve their use as a panel of biomarkers for diagnosing and staging of NSCLC in China. The expression of four SFRP members (SFRP1, 2, 4, and 5) in NSCLC samples was screened by RT-PCR and quantitative real-time PCR. Only SFRP1 was significantly downregulated in NSCLC, as compared to adjacent normal tissues and benign pulmonary disease tissues (P=0.006). Promoter hypermethylation of SFRP1 was found in 32.1% (25/78) NSCLC specimens and was closely correlated with loss of expression, besides SFRP1 hypermethylation was associated with lymph metastasis (P=0.039) and disease progression within one year (P=0.027). Furthermore, methylated SFRP1 was detected in 28.2% (22/78) of plasma samples from NSCLC patients while only 4% (2/50) in cancer-free controls, and the concordance of SFRP1 methylation status in tumor tissues and corresponding plasmas was satisfactory (P <0.001). In conclusion, epigenetic inactivation of SFRP1 is a common event contributing to lung carcinogenesis and maybe used as a potential biomarker for NSCLC in Chinese population.

Abstract
This paper presents an investigation on the fluorescent properties of semiconductor CdTe quantum dots (QDs) self-assembled on the surface of PVP (polyvinylpyrrolidone)-capped silver nanoparticles (NPs) by the ligand field effect. A significant 2.5-fold enhancement in the integrated fluorescence intensities, red shift of fluorescence peak, and obvious decrease of lifetime were observed in the CdTe QDs assembled on the Ag NPs in comparison with the pure CdTe QDs. The fluorescence enhancement factor and red shift were found to depend on the Ag NP concentration. The fluorescence enhancement was attributed to a highly localized electromagnetic field on the Ag NPs generated by the surface plasma and the change in the surface trap state of the CdTe QDs originating from plasma oscillations in the Ag NPs. It is first proposed that the surface passivation of CdTe QDs is also an important factor for metal-enhanced fluorescence. The surface defects of CdTe QDs can be modified by the Cd-O coordination interaction between the CdTe QDs and PVP molecules, which will cause the trap state density and luminescence lifetime to decrease. The surface passivation of CdTe QDs can also improve fluorescence quantum yield and lead to the red shift of the fluorescence peak. Compared with previous reports, the occurrence of the self-assembly of CdTe QDs on the surface of PVP-capped Ag NPs is fairly simple and easy. From a practical point of view, the combination of CdTe QDs with Ag NPs may lead to the fluorescence enhancement, which could be utilized in a variety of chemical and biological detection applications.

Abstract
We examine the magnetoresistance (MR) of conducting polymers with interest paid on the role of structural flexibility. Through Monte Carlo simulation and Green function method, we evaluate the electric transmission for a variety of polymer configurations. It is found that for a single polymer the transmission displays a complex oscillation and also a parity-dependent periodicity. For an ensemble of polymers the averaged transmission yields the nonlinear behavior of MR under varying magnetic fields. Interestingly, more flexible polymers are shown to achieve higher MR, depending on the population and the size of the loops.

Abstract
e19541 Background: Positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) scan has a well-established role in the management of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). However, in case of the primary gastric lymphoma, which is the most frequent extranodal NHL, the role of PET/CT scan is still controversial. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 42 patients with primary gastric lymphoma who underwent PET/CT scans; 32 patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and 10 patients with extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphoma) were analyzed. The PET/CT scans were compared with clinicopathologic features and the results of CT and endoscopy. After corresponding treatment, response was evaluated by conventional CT scans or PET/CT scans and endoscopy with biopsy Results: Nine patients were up-staged based on the results of their PET/CT scan compared to CT (7 DLBCL, 2 MALT lymphomas) while six patients were down-staged by the PET/CT scan. The high SUVmax group, defined as SUVmax ≥ median value, was significantly associated with an advanced Lugano stage (P < 0.001). Three patients with DLBCL, who showed an initially high SUVmax, died of disease progression. Although not statistically significant, there was a tendency of inferior outcome in the group with high SUVmax. Among 24 patients for whom follow-up PET/CT scan with endoscopy was performed, 11 patients with ulcerative or mucosal lesions showed residual FDG uptake. All of these gastric lesions were grossly and pathologically benign lesions without evidence of lymphoma cells. Conclusions: PET/CT scan can help staging patients with primary gastric lymphoma, and the maximum SUV has possibility to have prognostic value. However, the residual FDG uptake observed during follow-up should be interpreted cautiously in association with the results of endoscopy and multiple gastric biopsies. Abstract
2056 Background: Patients with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) suffer from neurocognitive decline due to both the disease and its treatment. We analyzed neurocognitive function of patients with recurrent GBM who participated in the BRAIN study, a phase II, multicenter, randomized, noncomparative clinical trial which assessed the efficacy and safety of bevacizumab alone or in combination with irinotecan. Methods: Eighty-five patients who participated in the bevacizumab-only group of the BRAIN study were assessed with the Hopkins Verbal Learning Test-Revised (HVLT-R), Trail Making Test parts A (TMTA) and B (TMTB), and the Controlled Oral Word Association (COWA) test. Assessments were conducted at baseline and then every 6 weeks while patients remained on study drug, up to 52 weeks. Change in neurocognitive function from baseline to Week 6 was categorized as improved, stable, or declined, using the reliable change index. Changes were confirmed at the next assessment, when available. Results were not adjusted for practice effects. Results: Between 93 and 98% of patients completed each test at baseline and 73–78% completed each test at both baseline and Week 6. The majority of patients demonstrated stable performance on each test at Week 6, relative to baseline. With the exception of the COWA test, 18–25% of patients demonstrated improved performance on one or more tests at Week 6. Conclusions: Preliminary results suggest that the majority of patients with recurrent GBM who were treated with bevacizumab alone in the BRAIN study demonstrated stable or improved neurocognitive function during the first 6 weeks of treatment. Changes across tasks and associations with measures of clinical efficacy, patient characteristics, and concomitant medications will be explored. [Table: see text] [Table: see text]

Abstract
Vestibular compensation refers to the behavioral recovery after a unilateral peripheral vestibular lesion. In chickens, posture and balance deficits are present immediately following unilateral vestibular ganglionectomy (UVG). After three days, most operated chickens begin to recover, but severe deficits persist in others. The tangential nucleus is a major avian vestibular nucleus whose principal cells are vestibular reflex projection neurons. From patch-clamp recordings on brain slices, the percentage of spontaneous spike firing principal cells, spike discharge rate, ionic conductances, and spontaneous excitatory postsynaptic currents (sEPSCs) were investigated one and three days after UVG. Already by one day after UVG, sEPSC frequency increased significantly on the lesion side, although no differences were detected in the percentage of spontaneous spike firing cells or discharge rate. In compensated chickens three days after UVG, the percentage of spontaneous spike firing cells increased on the lesion side and the discharge rate increased bilaterally. In uncompensated chickens three days after UVG, principal cells on the lesion side showed increased discharge rate and increased sEPSC frequency, whereas principal cells on the intact side were silent. Typically, silent principal cells exhibited smaller persistent sodium conductances and higher activation thresholds for the fast sodium channel than spiking cells. In addition, silent principal cells on the intact side of uncompensated chickens had larger dendrotoxin-sensitive potassium conductance, with a higher ratio of Kv1.1 surface/cytoplasmic expression. Increased sEPSC frequency in principal cells on the lesion side of uncompensated chickens was accompanied by decreased Kv1.2 immunolabeling of presynaptic terminals on principal cell bodies. Thus, both intrinsic ionic conductances and excitatory synaptic inputs play crucial roles at early stages after lesions. Unlike the principal cells in compensated chickens which showed similar percentages of spontaneous spike firing cells, discharge rates, and sEPSC frequencies bilaterally, principal cells in uncompensated chickens displayed gross asymmetry in these properties bilaterally.

Abstract
Much work has been carried out on adsorption capacity of coals. Diffusive transport processes within the coal matrix blocks could be the rate-limiting step for adsorption during gas injection and production operations. Identifying these processes and determining their contributions to overall mass transport is a complex and time consuming procedure. The paper presents numerical diffusion models in varying coal particles and investigates transport mechanisms. For this purpose, the coal particle is represented as a microporous solid penetrated by a network of larger interconnected macropores. The solid adsorbs the bulk of the gas. A simple relationship between the apparent and intrinsic Fickian diffusion coefficients is derived in the case of single-component (methane) transport and Langmuir-type adsorption. Mass transport in the bidisperse coal particle is significantly influenced by the adsorption in the microporous solid. The investigation is then extended to study concentration dependence of the microporous solid diffusion for binary (methane-CO2) mixtures using the Maxwell-Stefan formulation. It is found that co-diffusion of the gas molecules enhances the gas mass transport in the solid in the presence of competitive sorption dynamics, while counter-diffusion may diminish the gas mass transport. The influence of lateral interactions among the adsorbed molecules in the solid phase is discussed. The work finds application in modelling CBM and CO2-ECBM processes.
Introduction
As an unconventional natural gas resource, coalbed methane receives worldwide attention. Deep coal seams that are not accessible for mining are suitable for in situ gas production using conventional drilling, well completion and gas recovery technologies. Hence, a vast amount of natural gas is globally available. Unlike conventional gas resources, however, the gas storage, flow and transport processes in coalbeds are quite complex mainly due to the intricate nature of coal(1–6).
Coalbeds are porous media often characterized by a bimodal pore structure: a primary structure consisting of micro- and meso-scale pores, and a secondary structure with macropores and interconnected natural fractures. The microporous coal has an extremely large internal surface area and a strong affinity for certain naturally occurring chemical species such as methane, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and water. At high coalbed pressures, therefore the majority of the natural gas-in-place, in particular, methane, exists abundantly at an adsorbed liquid-like state in the microporous solid(1).
Depressurizing the coalbed may yield a significant volume of natural gas. However, the initial stage of recovery is often dominated by water production, whereas, the latter stage is under the influence of diffusional resistances of the primary pores of the coal matrix. Treatment and disposal of the produced water is expensive and its long-term environmental impact has not been clearly understood yet. Injection of a second gas with much higher adsorption capacity, on the other hand, could possibly enhance recovery by maintaining the overall reservoir pressure, thus, keeping the water production at a minimum level. Additionally, injecting a second gas would promote methane desorption by lowering the partial pressure of the coalbed methane in the migrating gas phase.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Brain abnormalities in neuromyelitis optica (NMO) attracted much attention. Our study was to identify the brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) abnormalities in Chinese NMO patients. METHODS Patients who fulfilled the latest diagnostic criteria of NMO proposed by Wingerchuk et al. [Neurology 66 (2006) 1485] and whose brain MRI did not meet the multiple sclerosis (MS) criteria of McDonald et al. [Ann Neurol 50 (2001) 121] were selected to perform MRI scanning of the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. RESULTS Twenty-eight of 33 patients (84.8%) had abnormal MRI findings. Twenty-two patients (66.7%) presented with well-defined brain parenchymal lesions and the other six patients (18.2%) with macroscopic symmetrical diffuse hyperintensities in deep white matter. Fifteen of 22 patients had more than one lesion (> or =2 lesions) and the other seven patients had single lesion. In the supratentorium, most lesions were punctate or small round dot and non-specific in juxtacortical, subcortical and deep white matter regions, a few were patchy atypical confluent lesions. Brainstem was easily involved (14/33, 42.4%) especially in medulla (7/33, 21.2%). CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates the characteristics of brain MRI abnormalities in Chinese NMO patients, which are helpful to the revision of diagnostic criteria for NMO.

Abstract
A new multichannel HCN interferometer has been developed on HL-2A tokamak, which is characterized by two techniques: (1) the wave-guide HCN laser with cavity length of 6 m to increase the optical resource power and (2) high response room temperature waveguide Schottky diode detectors to obtain good beat signal. The space resolution is 7 cm by the use of focusing metal mirrors mounted on the vacuum chamber and a compensated optical system. In the 2006 experiment campaign, this new interferometer has been applied for plasma density profile and density sawtooth measurement.

Abstract
4136 Introduction: BV prolongs overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) when added to 1st- or 2nd -line chemotherapy (CT) in mCRC. Though serious toxicities specific to BV are uncommon, a retrospective pooled analysis of 5 randomized trials showed an association of arterial thromboembolic events (ATEs) with BV use (3.8% vs 1.7% with CT alone), with age ≥65 and prior history (Hx) of ATE identified as associated risk factors (Skillings, JCO 2005). The BRiTE mCRC registry evaluated BV-associated serious adverse events (SAEs), including ATEs presenting as SAEs (sATE), in a general practice setting. Methods: Pts and methods have been described (Hedrick ASCO 2006). Hx of sATE, timing of prior sATE relative to starting BV, and anti-platelet agent (anti-plt) use were summarized. Definition of sATE included myocardial infarction (MI), cerebral vascular accident (CVA), transient ischemic attack (TIA), and peripheral arterial disease. Incidence rate of sATE was expressed as events per pt-yr of follow-up. Fisher’s exact test and multiple logistic regression was used to assess the univariate and multivariate associations. Results: Median follow- up was 17.5 mo. Of 1953 evaluable pts, 45.9% (n=896) were ≥65, 18.0% (n=352) had Hx of sATE, and 11.2% (n=219) received anti-plt. A total of 38 sATE [CVA (n=14), MI (n=11), sudden cardiac death (n=1), TIA (n=7), and other (n=5)] were reported in 34 (1.7%) pts. Median time to sATE was 3.6 mo. The calculated sATE rate was 2.2/100 pt-yr overall and 4.7/100 pt-yr in pts with prior sATE. Table 1 summarizes the results of univariate and multivariate analyses. Conclusions: In this series of BV-treated pts, the incidence of sATE associated with BV use was comparable with the rate of analogous events reported in previous controlled trials of BV in mCRC. 4036 Background: While BV prolongs OS when used with standard 1st- or 2nd-line chemotherapy (CT) in mCRC, no data exist on the effects of BBP. A previous report from BRiTE showed favorable median OS (27.1 mo, 95% CI 24.8-NE), with 1st line PFS (median 10.1 mo, 95% CI:9.7–10.4) comparable to historical mCRC trials, suggesting significant impact of post-progression survival on OS. This exploratory analysis evaluates the association of various pre- and post-treatment variables with OS in BRiTE. Methods: Pt population and methods have been described previously (Kozloff, ASCO 2006). All pts in BRiTE received BV as part of 1st-line therapy. The use of BBP and choice of CT were at investigator’s discretion. Kaplan-Meier methods were used to estimate PFS and OS. Cox’s proportional hazard model was used to assess the independent effects of pre- and post-treatment pt- related factors on OS, including age, ECOG PS, albumin, alkaline phosphatase, site of primary tumor, 1st-line CT regimen, 1st-line PFS, exposure to all 3 active CT agents, receipt of any 2nd-line CT, exposure to cetuximab, and BBP. Though there was variability observed in patterns of BBP, including continuous and discontinuous use, for the purpose of this analysis, BBP was defined as any exposure to BV after 1st progression (PD). Results: A total of 1,953 pts were treated in BRiTE. At median follow-up of 17.5 mo, there were 1,369 1st PD and 839 deaths. Among pts with 1st PD, 65.2% received any 2nd-line CT, 34.8% received cetuximab, and 53.8% received BBP. In a multivariate analysis, BBP and exposure to any 2nd-line CT were independently associated with increased OS (both p<0.0001). Age ≥65, PS ≥1, low albumin, elevated alkaline phosphatase, colon primary, and use of IFL were associated with inferior OS. Conclusions: BBP appears to be associated with longer OS in BRiTE. This finding supports the evaluation of BBP in prospective randomized clinical trials. Other factors that may have impacted this finding, including physician-related variables, will be investigated in future analyses. [Table: see text]

Abstract
We present a measurement of the partial branching fractions and mass spectra of the exclusive radiative penguin processes B-->Kpipigamma in the range m(Kpipi)<1.8 GeV/c(2). We reconstruct four final states: K(+)pi(-)pi(+)gamma, K(+)pi(-)pi(0)gamma, K(S)(0)pi(-)pi(+)gamma, and K(S)(0)pi(+)pi(0)gamma, where K(S)(0)-->pi(+)pi(-). Using 232 x 10(6) e(+)e(-)-->BB events recorded by the BABAR experiment at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric-energy storage ring, we measure the branching fractions B(B(+)-->K(+)pi(-)pi(+)gamma)=[2.95+/-0.13(stat)+/-0.20(syst)] x 10(-5), B(B(0)-->K(+)pi(-)pi(0)gamma)=[4.07+/-0.22(stat)+/-0.31(syst)] x 10(-5), B(B(0)-->K(0)pi(+)pi(-)gamma)=[1.85+/-0.21(stat)+/-0.12(syst)] x 10(-5), and B(B(+)-->K(0)pi(+)pi(0)gamma)=[4.56+/-0.42(stat)+/-0.31(syst)] x 10(-5).
