Abstract
In this study, we investigate methods to optimize the design of a panoramic annular lens (PAL) system. The design details of a PAL surveillance system, an anamorphic PAL surveillance system, a phone camera with a PAL attachment, and a PAL endoscope system are described. All these designs are optimized using a standard optical software package (Zemax). The results combine very good image quality with a modulation transfer function above 0.3, which is within the cutoff frequency of sensor chips.

Abstract
Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is a potential therapeutic agent for diabetic nephropathy. The mechanisms for the renoprotective effect of HGF have been studied extensively, but antioxidant signalling of HGF in diabetic nephropathy is minimally understood. Our observations indicated that a nitrated guanine nucleotide, 8-nitroguanosine 3'5'-cyclic monophosphate (8-nitro-cGMP) diminished in high glucose (HG)-treated rat mesangial cells (RMC). However, HGF obviously lifted intracellular 8-nitro-cGMP level, which was accompanied by remarkably suppressed oxidative stress as evidenced by decreased reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde levels and elevated glutathione level. Inhibitor of soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC) NS-2028 and inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) l-NMMA could block increased 8-nitro-cGMP level and repress oxidative stress by HGF. Accordingly, these two inhibitors abrogated HGF-induced nuclear accumulation of NF-E2 related factor 2 (Nrf2) and up-regulation of Nrf2 downstream glutamate-cysteine ligase catalytic subunit (GCLC) expression. In conclusion, HGF ameliorated HG-mediated oxidative stress in RMC at least in part by enhancing nitric oxide and subsequent 8-nitro-cGMP production.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The co-occurrence of schizophrenia and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has been well documented. Recent genome-wide association studies and meta-analyses have shown robust associations of the solute carrier family 30 member 8 (SLC30A8) gene variants with T2DM in various populations. We examined the involvement of the SLC30A8 in the susceptibility to schizophrenia in a Han Chinese population. METHODS The SLC30A8 rs13266634 gene polymorphism was genotyped in 837 chronic schizophrenic and 1109 unrelated healthy controls by using a case control design. We also assessed clinical symptoms. RESULTS There were no significant differences in the rs13266634 genotype (χ(2) = 1.95, df = 2, p = 0.38) and allele (χ(2) = 0.47, df = 1, p = 0.50) distributions between the patient and control groups. There was no association between rs13266634 and clinical symptoms. CONCLUSION The SLC30A8 gene variation does not appear to contribute a genetic basis for the co-occurrence of schizophrenia and T2DM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis is a common disease in China. As a notifiable disease, cases are registered by ophthalmologists on the AHC surveillance system. An AHC outbreak caused by CA24v was observed in Guangdong Province in 2007 by the National Disease Supervision Information Management System. Three years later, a larger outbreak occurred in Guangdong during the August-October period (2010). To characterize the outbreak and compare the genetic diversity of CA24v, which was determined to be the cause of the outbreak, the epidemiology and the molecular characterization of CA24v were analyzed in this study. RESULTS A total of 69,635 cases were reported in the outbreak. 73.5% of index cases originated from students, children in kindergarten and factory workers, with the ≦ 9 age group at the highest risk. The male to female ratio was 1.84:1 among 0-19 years. 56 conjunctival swabs were collected to identify the causative agent from five cities with the AHC outbreak. 30 virus strains were isolated, and two of the genomes had the highest identity values (95.8%) with CA24v genomes. Four CA24v genotypes were identified by phylogenetic analysis for the VP1 and 3C regions. CA24v which caused the outbreak belonged to genotype IV. Furthermore, full nucleotide sequences for four representative isolates in 2010 and 2007 were determined and compared. 20 aa mutations, two nt insertions and one nt deletion were observed in the open reading frame, with 5'- and 3'- UTR respectively between them. CONCLUSIONS CA24v was determined to be the pathogen causing the outbreak and belongs to genotype IV. VP1 is more informative than 3C(Pro) for describing molecular epidemiology and we hypothesize that accumulative mutations may have promoted the outbreak.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the relationship between diabetes and impairments in functional and cognitive status as well as depression in older people. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Elderly Health Centres (EHC) in Hong Kong. PARTICIPANTS 66,813 older people receiving baseline assessment at EHC in 1998 to 2001. MEASUREMENTS Diabetes status was defined by self-report and blood glucose tests. Functional status was assessed by 5 items of instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) and 7 items of activities of daily living (ADL). Cognitive status was screened by the Abbreviated Mental Test-Hong Kong version (AMT). Depressive symptoms were screened by the Geriatric Depression Scale-Chinese version (GDS). RESULTS Among the subjects, 10.4% reported having regular treatment for diabetes, 3.4% had diabetes but were not receiving regular treatment, and 86.2% did not have diabetes. After controlling for age, sex and education level, those having regular treatment for diabetes were 1.7 times more likely (OR=1.65, 95% CI: 1.51-1.80) to have functional impairment, 1.3 times more likely (OR=1.28, 95% CI: 1.11-1.48) to have cognitive impairment and 1.3 times more likely (OR=1.35, 95% CI: 1.25-1.46) to have depression, than older people without diabetes. CONCLUSION Older people with diabetes may be less capable of managing the disease than the younger ones as a result of increased risk of both physical and cognitive impairment. This study provided further evidence for the need of an international consensus statement regarding care of diabetes in older people.

Abstract
In the present paper, a novel method to accelerate sludge granulation is presented. Inoculation with chlamydospores of Phanerochaete sp. HSD accelerated sludge granulation during the treatment process of phenol wastewater, and the sludge granulation rate reached 66 ± 2% on day 7, 32 days earlier than that of the control inoculated with activated sludge only. Aerobic granule in R1 (AG(R1)) showed an annual ring-like multilayer structure and a primary core also existed in the nuclear area of the granule. The mechanism of rapid granulation revealed that the chlamydospore could survive in phenol wastewater and form the primary matrix on which aerobic granule was developed layer by layer. In addition, AG(R1) developed in a phenol uptake system to counteract the adverse effects of phenol inhibition. Higher tolerance toward wastewater with high phenol strength was exhibited, and the maximum specific phenol degradation rate reached 1.54 g phenol g(-1) VSS day(-1).

Abstract
Late hematoma or seroma and galactocele caused by augmentation mammaplasty have been reported in patients with silicon breast prostheses but are extremely rare in patients injected with polyacrylamide gel (PAAG). In a retrospective survey, the incidence, clinical manifestations, and management of late hematoma, seroma, and galactocele in 28 of 2,610 patients who underwent breast augmentation with PAAG injection were investigated, and 5 typical cases are presented. The diagnostic and managing methods for this complication have been assessed. The incidence of late hematoma or seroma was 0.65% and that of galactocele was 0.35% among patients with PAAG-injected breast augmentations. The clinical onsets of such late PAAG complications were of two types: rapid enlargement in 17 patients and progressive expansion in another 11 patients. Aspiration, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are useful and sensitive tools for diagnosis. Foreign body reaction, PAAG-related tissue necrosis and fibrosis, and granuloma were shown, and the bacterial cultures in all 12 cases were negative. Needle aspiration with pressure dressing has been advocated as a reliable method for small diseases, and surgical exploration with irrigation-vacuum drainage and evacuation with capsulectomy have been considered more effective for recurrent, large, and long-term cases. In conclusion, these late complications rarely present after large-volume injections of PAAG for breast augmentation. The PAAG-related pathologic inflammatory tissue changes are suggested as the pathogenesis for the complication. Trauma and breastfeeding are considered to be stimulating factors.

Abstract
Small cell lung cancer is commonly regarded as an old age related disease. Although the brain is a common site of metastasis for this type of lung cancer, the first manifestation is rarely shown from the metastasis site. In this paper, we report a rare case of 19-year-old female patient with small cell lung cancer whose initial presentation was a solitary brain metastasis. The patient was admitted to our hospital for the recurrence of brain tumor, and the histological diagnosis after operation showed small cell lung cancer. Three months later, she suffered from dry cough and was diagnosed as small cell lung cancer by trans-bronchial biopsy. Due to the identical cell types and immunohistochemical phenotypes, the brain tumor was retrospectively diagnosed as metastasis of small lung cancer by two neurological pathologists. She is the youngest female with brain metastasis as the first manifestation of small cell lung cancer reported so far internationally as to our knowledge. Second-hand smoking was possibly one of the risk factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Research into cell-free fetal (cff) nucleic acids has primarily focused on maternal plasma; however, cff DNA and RNA are also detectable in other body fluids such as amniotic fluid (AF). In AF, cff DNA is present in much greater concentrations than in maternal plasma and represents a pure fetal sample uncontaminated by maternal- and trophoblast-derived nucleic acids. The aim of this review was to summarize the current knowledge on cff nucleic acids in AF and to outline future research directions. METHODS MEDLINE and PREMEDLINE were searched up to August 2010 for original investigations of cell-free RNA or DNA in AF. Sixteen studies were included in the review. RESULTS AF cff DNA represents a physiologically separate pool from cff DNA in maternal plasma. The placenta is not a major source of nucleic acids in AF. It is feasible to isolate cff nucleic acids from small volumes of discarded AF supernatant in sufficient quality and quantity to perform microarray studies and downstream applications such as pathway analysis. This 'discovery-driven approach' has resulted in new information on the pathogenesis of Down syndrome and polyhydramnios. There is otherwise a paucity of information relating to the basic biology and clinical applications of cff nucleic acids in AF. CONCLUSIONS AF supernatant is a valuable and widely available but under-utilized biological resource. Further studies of cff nucleic acids in AF may lead to new insights into human fetal development and ultimately new approaches to antenatal treatment of human disease.
