Progressive diaphyseal dysplasia: case report and literature review

We describe a case of progressive diaphyseal dysplasia occurring sporadically in a 25-year-old woman. This patient had menorrhagia, and severe anemia and hepatosplenomegaly, unusual clinical features of this disease.

Liver in kala-azar

Sixty patients with kala-azar were studied for liver involvement. Clinically none had any evidence of chronic liver disease. Biochemical evidence of hepatitis was seen in about 25% of cases while radiological and radionuclide studies failed to reveal portal hypertension and/or cirrhosis of liver in any of the patients. Histopathology of the liver in 18 patients failed to reveal any evidence of chronic liver disease or cirrhosis. It is suggested that portal hypertension and cirrhosis of liver probably do not occur as a consequence of kala-azar.

Pulmonary blastoma

Pulmonary blastoma is a rare tumour of the lung. We report three cases of this tumour. In all three cases, a possibility of blastoma was considered on aspiration cytology of the tumours. The relevant literature including its pathogenesis is reviewed.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the mediastinum

A case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the mediastinum presenting with unusual features of fever and leucocytosis is reported. This is the youngest patient reported in the literature who had this tumour in the mediastinum.

Colonic carcinoma after chemotherapy of Hodgkin's disease

We describe a 28-year-old man with stage IV-B Hodgkin's disease who developed an adenocarcinoma of the colon after treatment with combination chemotherapy. To the best of our knowledge, this patient is the youngest, and only the fourth person in the English-language literature to develop colonic carcinoma after combination chemotherapy of Hodgkin's disease without radiation.

Mediastinal carcinoid tumour with unusual manifestations

A rare case of mediastinal carcinoid tumour with superior vena cava obstruction, and osteolytic as well as osteoblastic secondaries in the bones is described. The relevant literature is reviewed.

Functional, malignant intrathoracic paraganglioma

This paper describes a case of functional, malignant branchiomeric paraganglioma, the third such to be reported. The patient presented with malignant hypertension and symptoms suggestive of excessive catecholamine secretion.

Cardiac tamponade as the initial presentation of malignancy

We describe a series of five patients who had cardiac tamponade at the time of initial presentation as a result of extracardiac malignancy. Three cases had adenocarcinoma and two had squamous cell carcinoma. The diagnosis of bronchogenic carcinoma was established after appropriate investigations in three cases. One patient possibly had a primary malignancy of the gastro-intestinal tract. The relevant literature is reviewed.

Cholera gastroenteritis amongst children in Delhi

Cholera gastroenteritis amongst 3595 children under twelve years suffering from acute watery diarrhea was studied for a period of five years (1982-86). V. cholerae 01 could be isolated from 31.7% of total specimens studied. Distribution in different age groups out of total gastroenteritis cases was 7.5% in less than 2 years, 13.1% in 2-5 years and 11.1% in greater than 5-12 years. Out of total cholera cases (1141 isolate) 23.4% occurred in the age group less than 2 yrs., 41.4% in 2-5 yrs. and 35.1% in greater than 5-12 yrs. Infection occurred more often in males in all the age groups. Throughout the study, cholera was observed during summer monsoon season with Ogawa being predominant serotype.

Mediastinal seminoma. A case report and review of the literature
