Abstract
Objective: To investigate the changes in protein expression in patients with 1-bromopropane (1-BP) poisoning using high-throughput proteomic technique and to screen out protein markers. Methods: Serum samples were collected from 3 patients with 1-BP poisoning and 15 controls. The label-free proteomic tech-nique was used for the quantitation and identification of proteins expressed in these samples, and the results were compared between the patients with 1-BP poisoning and the control population. The bioinformatics tools were used to analyze the function of differentially expressed proteins. Results: Compared with the control popula-tion, the patients with 1-BP poisoning had >2-fold upregulation of 38 proteins and >2-fold downregulation of 68 proteins. The differentially expressed proteins were mainly involved in immune response, signal transduction, and stress response. Conclusion: The proteins screened out may be potential protein markers for 1-BP poison-ing, which provides reliable and precise methods and thoughts for the diagnosis of 1-BP poisoning.

Abstract
The fat mass and obesity associated (FTO) gene, which encodes a demethylase of m6A, has been reported to respond to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and to serve as a link between inflammation and metabolic responses. The objective of this study was to determine whether LPS-induced changes in the expression of FTO and metabolic genes are associated with alterations of m6A in relevant mRNAs. LPS challenge significantly decreased hepatic mRNA expression of carnitine palmitoyl transferase 1 (CPT1) and CPT2, which coincided with a tendency of higher triglyceride accumulation in the liver. LPS significantly down-regulated the full length cFTO1, yet up-regulated the truncated cFTO4 protein in the liver nuclear extracts. Nuclear protein content of cFTO4 in the liver was negatively correlated with the mRNA abundances of CPT1 (r = 0.629) and CPT2 (r = 0.622). Methylated RNA immunoprecipitation analysis revealed that the m6A level around the translation start site of CPT1 was markably decreased in the liver of LPS-treated chickens. These results indicate that LPS-induced changes in FTO protein expression are associated with alteration of mRNA m6A modification in chicken liver.

Abstract
The heavy metal cadmium (Cd) is nephrotoxic. Recent studies show that autophagy plays an essential role in Cd-induced kidney injury. However, the mechanisms of Cd-induced kidney injury accompanied by autophagy are still obscure. In the present study, we first confirmed that Cd induced kidney damage and dysfunction, along with autophagy, both in vivo and in vitro. Then, we observed that cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and the eIF2α-ATF4 pathway of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress were induced by Cd in both kidney tissues and cultured cells. Further studies showed that inhibition of COX-2 with celecoxib or RNA interference (RNAi) inhibited the Cd-induced autophagy in kidney cells. In addition, blocking ER stress with 4-phenylbutyrate or RNAi partially counteracted COX-2 overexpression and autophagy induced by Cd, which suggested that ER stress was required for Cd-induced kidney autophagy. Significantly, our results showed that Cd activated ATF4 and induced its translocation to the nucleus. Knockdown of ATF4 inhibited Cd-induced COX-2 overexpression. While COX-2 overexpression is involved in renal dysfunction, there is no prior report on the role of COX-2 in autophagy regulation. The results of the current study suggest a novel molecular mechanism that the ER stress eIF2α-ATF4 pathway-mediated COX-2 overexpression contributes to Cd-induced kidney autophagy and injury. The present study implies that COX-2 may be a potential target for therapy against Cd-induced nephrotoxicity.

Abstract
Two heterodimeric receptors consisting of interleukin (IL)-20R2 are shared by three of the IL-20 family of cytokines, IL-19, IL-20 and IL-24. Along with IL-22, these cytokines are downstream effectors of IL-23 and have been implicated in keratinocyte functions and the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Surprisingly, whereas knocking out either the IL-23 or IL-22 gene abolished imiquimod-induced psoriatic phenotypes in mice, similar attempt for IL-20R2 had little effect. Here, we report that the apparent disparity may result from a new IL-20R2 isoform encoded by an alternatively spliced transcript which survived the previous attempt for IL-20R2 gene knockout via the exon I deletion.

Abstract
AIM Quality of life (QOL) was assessed after palliative surgery for incurable metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC). METHOD Newly diagnosed patients with incurable metastatic CRC who were offered elective palliative surgical intervention were included. The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer QLQ-C30 and QLQ-CR29 questionnaire was used for the assessment of QOL at baseline and at 3 and 6 months after surgery. Generalized estimating equations were used to estimate the mean change in the QOL score from baseline. RESULTS Twenty-four patients formed the study group. Sixteen underwent resection of the primary tumour and eight had a proximal diversion or bypass. The Global Health (GH) score and Social Functioning (SF) score improved at 3 and 6 months after intervention respectively (GH +11, P = 0.021; SF +15, P = 0.005). Mean anxiety scores were markedly improved from the baseline of 51 to 71 (P = 0.004, 3 months) and 76 (P = 0.002, 6 months). Weight concerns also improved significantly when compared with baseline (3 months, +20, P < 0.001; 6 months, +14, P = 0.012). Symptoms of diarrhoea (3 months, --17, P = 0.007; 6 months,--16, P = 0.008) and nausea (--8, P = 0.032) improved. CONCLUSION In patients with incurable metastatic CRC, surgery improved QOL.

Abstract
Bromodomain containing 7 (BRD7) was identified as a nuclear transcriptional regulatory factor. BRD7 functions as a tumor suppressor in multiple cancers, including nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). In this study, we reported a novel mechanism of BRD7 in NPC progression. We demonstrated that the expression of miR-141 was remarkably increased in NPC tissues and was negatively correlated with the expression of BRD7 and the survival rate of NPC patients. Decreased expression levels of miR-141, including the primary, the precursor and the mature forms of miR-141, were found in BRD7-overexpressing HEK293, 5-8F and HNE1 cells compared the control cells, while there was no obvious effect on the expression levels of the two critical enzymes Drosha and Dicer. BRD7 can negatively regulate the promoter activity of miR-141, while no obvious binding site of BRD7 was found in the potential promoter region of miR-141. Moreover, ectopic expression of miR-141 can significantly promote cell proliferation and inhibit apoptosis in NPC, and rescuing the expression of miR-141 in BRD7-overexpressing NPC cells could partially reverse the tumor suppressive effect of BRD7 on cell proliferation and tumor growth in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, the activation of the PTEN/AKT pathway mediated by the overexpression of BRD7 could be inhibited by rescuing the expression of miR-141, which accordingly results in the partial restoration of cell proliferation and tumor growth. Our findings demonstrate that the BRD7/miR-141/PTEN/AKT axis has critical roles in the progression of NPC and provide some promising targets for the diagnosis and treatment of NPC.

Abstract
We conducted a case-control study to investigate the role of ERCC1 rs3212986 and ERCC2 rs13181 gene polymorphisms in the development of breast cancer. Between March 2012 and March 2014, a total of 242 newly diagnosed breast cancer patients with histopathologically confirmed primary breast cancer and 242 healthy controls were recruited. Genotyping of ERCC1 rs3212986 and ERCC2 rs13181 polymorphisms was carried out using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. Unconditional logistic regression analyses indicated that the TT genotype of rs3212986 was associated with a higher risk of breast cancer compared to that associated with the GG genotype (OR = 2.05, 95%CI = 1.13-3.78). In dominant and recessive models, we found that the rs3212986 polymorphism was associated with increased risk of breast cancer, and the ORs were 1.50 (95%CI = 1.03-2.18) and 1.74 (95%CI = 1.01-3.11), respectively. In summary, we found that the ERCC1 rs3212986 polymorphism was associated with the development of breast cancer.

Abstract
Capacitive Deionization (CDI) is an electrochemical method for water desalination employing porous carbon electrodes. To enhance the performance of CDI, identification of electronic and ionic resistances in the CDI cell is important. In this work, we outline a method to identify these resistances. We illustrate our method by calculating the resistances in a CDI cell with membranes (MCDI) and by using this knowledge to improve the cell design. To identify the resistances, we derive a full-scale MCDI model. This model is validated against experimental data and used to calculate the ionic resistances across the MCDI cell. We present a novel way to measure the electronic resistances in a CDI cell, as well as the spacer channel thickness and porosity after assembly of the MCDI cell. We identify that for inflow salt concentrations of 20 mM the resistance is mainly located in the spacer channel and the external electrical circuit, not in the electrodes. Based on these findings, we show that the carbon electrode thickness can be increased without significantly increasing the energy consumption per mol salt removed, which has the advantage that the desalination time can be lengthened significantly.

Abstract
The endovascular treatment of wide-necked, large and giant aneurysms remains challenging. This retrospective study investigated the feasibility and safety of an intra-aneurysmal microcatheter looping technique for stent-assisted embolization of complicated intracranial aneurysms. This technique was used for 31 patients with complicated cerebral aneurysms from January 2007 to November 2013. The clinical and angiographic results were retrospectively evaluated. The target aneurysms were successfully treated in all cases (100%). A flow diverter was used in seven procedures. There were no aneurysmal perforations or ischemic complications, except for a microguidewire perforation of the distal vessel in one case. Among the 24 cases with conventional stent-assisted embolization, complete embolization or neck residual was obtained in 21 cases. Partial occlusion occurred in three cases. In conclusion, the intra-aneurysmal microcatheter looping technique is a safe and feasible alternative treatment of complicated intracranial aneurysms. This approach is a reasonable choice for patients and leads to successful outcomes.

Abstract
Danshen injection, a pharmaceutical dosage form of Danshen, has been widely used in the treatment of coronary heart diseases, myocardial infarction, and hypertension. With more and more adverse drug reactions linked with Danshen injection, its safety comes under suspicion. To evaluate its safety, mice were divided into four groups: vehicle, low-, middle-, and high-Danshen group, and each group was intravenously administered with Danshen injection at a dose of 0, 0.64, 1.55, and 5.76 g/kg/day for 5 days, respectively (the low dosage was the recommended clinical dosage, the middle dosage was the most commonly used higher dosage, and the high dosage was the highest dosage used in clinic). Peripheral vascular toxicity wasn't observed in the low-dosage group, elevated serum endothelin-1 (ET-1) was observed in the middle-dosage group; and more peripheral vascular toxicities like increased vascular leakage, elevated serum nitrate and ET-1, and vascular endothelial cells apoptosis were detected in the high-dosage group. In vitro study, low-concentration Danshen injection showed protective effect to human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), while high concentration displayed strong cytotoxic effects, including increase in nitric oxide and ET-1 production, inhibition of cell viability, and apoptosis induction. Further, the HUVECs' apoptosis induced by high-concentration Danshen injection was found along with the induction of reactive oxygen species. In conclusion, these results suggest that Danshen injection is nontoxic in its recommended clinical dosage, and the 2.4-fold as the recommended clinical dosage might be the highest safety dosage in clinic treatment. In addition, Danshen injection is a potential vascular toxic drug in its high dosage and shouldn't be used far beyond its recommended dosage in clinic treatment.

Abstract
UNLABELLED This meta-analysis synthesized current evidence from 24 clinical trials to evaluate the impact of different resistance training modes on postmenopausal bone loss. Exercise interventions were categorized into two training modes, namely resistance-alone versus combined resistance training protocols. The combined resistance training protocols were defined as the combination of resistance training and high-impact or weight-bearing exercise. The results suggested that the combined resistance training protocols were effective in improving bone mineral density (BMD) at the femoral neck and lumbar spine. INTRODUCTION The current meta-analysis aimed to examine the effects of combined resistance and resistance-alone training protocols on the preservation of femoral neck and lumbar spine BMD in postmenopausal women. METHODS An electronic database search was conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, SPORTDiscus, Web of Science, and ProQuest up to March 1, 2014 for the influence of resistance exercise on BMD in postmenopausal women. The study quality was evaluated. The effect sizes were estimated in terms of the standardized mean difference (SMD). A subgroup analysis was conducted by exercise categories. RESULTS Twenty-four studies were included in the overall analysis of skeletal response to resistance exercise. The between-study heterogeneity was evident for the hip (I (2) = 46.5%) and spine (I (2) = 62.3%). The overall analysis suggested that resistance training significantly increased femoral neck BMD (SMD = 0.303, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) = 0.127-0.479, p = 0.001) and lumbar spine BMD (SMD = 0.311, 95% CI = 0.115-0.507, p = 0.002) in postmenopausal women. However, subgroup analysis indicated that combined resistance training programs significantly affected both the hip BMD (SMD = 0.411, 95% CI = 0.176-0.645, p = 0.001) and spine BMD (SMD = 0.431, 95% CI = 0.159-0.702, p = 0.002), whereas resistance-alone protocols only produced nonsignificant positive effects both on the femoral neck and lumbar spine BMD. CONCLUSIONS Combined resistance exercise protocols appear effective in preserving femoral neck and lumbar spine BMD in postmenopausal women, whereas resistance-alone protocols only produced a nonsignificant positive effect.
