Abstract
We investigated the effect of the Ag nanoparticles on the ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of Ag/poly(vinylidenefluoride-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) composite films. We found that the remanent polarization and direct piezoelectric coefficient increased up to 12.14 μC/cm2 and 20.23 pC/N when the Ag concentration increased up to 0.005 volume percent (v%) and decreased down to 9.38 μC/cm2 and 13.45 pC/N when it increased up to 0.01 v%. Further increase in Ag concentration resulted in precipitation of Ag phase and significant leakage current that hindered any meaningful measurement of the ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties. 46% increase of the remanent polarization value and 27% increase of the direct piezoelectric coefficient were observed in the film with the 0.005 v% of the Ag nanoparticles added without significant changes to the crystalline structure confirmed by both X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) experiments. These enhancements of both the ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties are attributed to the increase in the effective electric field induced by the reduction in the effective volume of P(VDF-TrFE) that results in more aligned dipoles.

Abstract
NFBD1 functions in cell cycle checkpoint activation and DNA repair following ionizing radiation (IR). In this study, we defined the NFBD1 as a tractable molecular target to radiosensitize nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) cells. Silencing NFBD1 using lentivirus-mediated shRNA-sensitized NPC cells to radiation in a dose-dependent manner, increasing apoptotic cell death, decreasing clonogenic survival and delaying DNA damage repair. Furthermore, downregulation of NFBD1 inhibited the amplification of the IR-induced DNA damage signal, and failed to accumulate and retain DNA damage-response proteins at the DNA damage sites, which leaded to defective checkpoint activation following DNA damage. We also implicated the involvement of NFBD1 in IR-induced Rad51 and DNA-dependent protein kinase catalytic subunit foci formation. Xenografts models in nude mice showed that silencing NFBD1 significantly enhanced the antitumor activity of IR, leading to tumor growth inhibition of the combination therapy. Our studies suggested that a combination of gene therapy and radiation therapy may be an effective strategy for human NPC treatment.

Abstract
Highly ordered and well-aligned PbTiO3/TiN core-shell nanotubes are fabricated via an anodic aluminum oxide templating route followed by TiN and TiO2 atomic layer deposition deposition and a subsequent PbO vapor reaction. PbTiO3/TiN nanotubes keep their original shape after the vapor phase reaction, and they display well-defined piezoresponse hysteresis curves with remnant piezoresponse of 38 pm V(-1) .

Abstract
PVDF and P(VDF-TrFE) nano- and micro- structures have been widely used due to their potential applications in several fields, including sensors, actuators, vital sign transducers, and energy harvesters. In this study, we developed vertically aligned P(VDF-TrFE) core-shell structures using high modulus polyurethane acrylate (PUA) pillars as the support structure to maintain the structural integrity. In addition, we were able to improve the piezoelectric effect by 1.85 times from 40 ± 2 to 74 ± 2 pm/V when compared to the thin film counterpart, which contributes to the more efficient current generation under a given stress, by making an effective use of the P(VDF-TrFE) thin top layer as well as the side walls. We attribute the enhancement of piezoelectric effects to the contributions from the shell component and the strain confinement effect, which was supported by our modeling results. We envision that these organic-based P(VDF-TrFE) core-shell structures will be used widely as 3D sensors and power generators because they are optimized for current generations by utilizing all surface areas, including the side walls of core-shell structures.

Abstract
AIM The study was aimed to evaluate the function of the autonomic nervous system by heart rate recovery (HRR) and chronotropic incompetence (CIc) in patients with prehypertension. METHODS Subjects were classified into three groups by JCN 7 REPORT: 1) hypertension in the case of systolic blood pressure of ≥140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure of ≥90 mmHg; 2) prehypertension in the case of systolic blood pressure of 120~139 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure of 80~89 mmHg; and 3) normal in the case of systolic blood pressure of <120 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure of <80 mmHg. HRR and CIc in 147 subjects with prehypertension, 147 subjects with hypertension and 211 subjects with normal blood pressure were measured. RESULTS HRR was significantly lower in subjects with prehypertension than in subjects with normal blood pressure (37.27±11.93 vs. 34.17±11.03, P<0.05), but there was no significant difference between subjects with hypertension and subjects with prehypertension. With regard to the CIc, subjects with hypertension showed significantly higher frequency than both subjects with normal blood pressure and with prehypertension (P<0.05). The results of multiple regression analysis showed that the HRR was significantly influenced by such factors as age (P<0.001), waist size (P<0.001), HDL cholesterol (P<0.001), heart rate at rest (P<0.001), maximum heart rate (P=0.049) and maximum systolic blood pressure (P=0.007). CONCLUSION Subjects with prehypertension showed a lower HRR compared with those with normal blood pressure, which proves that the dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system also appears in patients with prehypertension, the previous stage of hypertension.

Abstract
Polymer ferroelectrics are flexible and lightweight electromechanical materials that are widely studied due to their potential application as sensors, actuators, and energy harvesters. However, one of the biggest challenges is their low piezoelectric coefficient. Here, we report a mechanical annealing effect based on local pressure induced by a nanoscale tip that enhances the local piezoresponse. This process can control the nanoscale material properties over a microscale area at room temperature. We attribute this improvement to the formation and growth of β-phase extended chain crystals via sliding diffusion and crystal alignment along the scan axis under high mechanical stress. We believe that this technique can be useful for local enhancement of piezoresponse in ferroelectric polymer thin films.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATION To evaluate the prognostic significance of positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in patients diagnosed with cervical cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients with cervical cancer in FIGO Stages IB1 to IVB were imaged with PET/CT prior to treatment during one of the staging work-ups. The patients were observed for a median of 31.4 months (range, six to 89 months) after the initial treatment. The standardized uptake value (SUV) max of the primary cervical tumor mass was compared with the prognostic factors. RESULTs: A total of 81 patients who were primarily treated with radical hysterectomy (RH, n = 45) or concurrent chemoradiation (CCRT, n = 36) were analyzed. Multivariate analysis indicated that larger tumor size (> 4 cm, OR 8.694, 95% CI, 1.638-46.146), deep stromal invasion (≥ 1 cm, OR 7.249, 95% CI, 1.141-46.039) by the primary tumor, and pathologically confirmed pelvic lymph node involvement (positive, OR 14.586, 95% CI, 2.072-102.674) were significantly associated with recurrence after treatment. However, pretreatment SUVmax was not a significant independent predictor of disease recurrence (OR 1.058, 95% CI, 0.255-4.398). CONCLUSION [18F]Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake by the primary tumor showed a significant association with several risk factors that have been identified as treatment predictors. However, a high pretreatment SUVmax was not predictive of recurrence in uter- ine cervical cancer patients.

Abstract
Pattern generation of well-controlled block copolymers (BCPs) with a high Flory-Huggins interaction parameter (χ) is important for applications in sub-20 nm nanolithography. We used mixed solvents of dimethylformamide (DMF) and toluene to control the morphology as well as the time to achieve the targeted morphology via self-assembly of BCPs. By precisely controlling the volume ratio of DMF and toluene, well-ordered line, honeycomb, circular hole, and lamellar nanostructures were obtained from a cylinder-forming poly(styrene-b-2-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P2VP) BCP with high χ. Furthermore, a well-aligned 12 nm line pattern was successfully achieved in the guiding template within one minute using the mixed solvents. This practical method may also be applicable to self-assembly of other BCPs, providing more opportunities for the next-generation sub-10 nm lithography applications.

Abstract
AIMS In spite of the reported efficacy and safety of antimuscarinics in men with OAB (overactive bladder) and BPO (benign prostatic obstruction), many patients do not persist with the treatment. We aimed to evaluate persistence and the reasons for the discontinuation of solifenacin add-on therapy in men with residual symptoms of OAB after tamsulosin monotherapy for BPO in a real clinical environment. METHODS Men aged ≥ 45 years with IPSS ≥ 12 and symptoms of OAB (OAB-V8 ≥ 8, micturition ≥ 8/24 h, urgency ≥ 2/24 h) were prescribed tamsulosin 0.2 mg. After 4 weeks, men who had residual symptoms of OAB (OAB-V8 ≥ 8, micturition ≥ 8/24 h, urgency ≥ 1/24 h) and reported that they were 'dissatisfied' or 'a little satisfied' with the therapy were enrolled and prescribed solifenacin 5 mg in combination with tamsulosin. After 52 weeks, persistence and the reasons for the discontinuation of solifenacin were evaluated. Factors related to persistence were analysed. RESULTS Of the 305 men who had been treated with tamsulosin, 176 were prescribed solifenacin. After 52 weeks, 44 (25%) remained on solifenacin therapy. Of the 132 who discontinued solifenacin, 85 were evaluated on the reason for discontinuation. The three most common reasons for discontinuation were adverse events (AEs) (35%), lack of efficacy (33%), and improvement in symptoms (16%). The aggravation of voiding symptoms was the most common AE leading to discontinuation. Retention was observed in 11 men. None of the demographical or clinical characteristics were significantly related to persistence. CONCLUSIONS Only 25% men with OAB and BPO remained on antimuscarinic add-on therapy after 1 year, mostly because of AEs and lack of efficacy. Realistic data should be added to what is already known about antimuscarinic treatment in men by including patients who were excluded or who dropped out of well-designed clinical trials.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare the clinical characteristics of lupus enteritis (LE) and non-enteric lupus (non-LE) patients and identify predictors of LE recurrence. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 62 systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients in a tertiary hospital who experienced enteric symptoms and underwent abdominal computed tomography scanning between January 1997 and December 2013. We compared the clinical characteristics between LE and non-LE patients and between recurrent LE and non-recurrent LE cases. RESULTS Out of 62 SLE patients with enteric symptoms, 46 cases (74%) were compatible with LE based on computed tomography findings. The C4 level was decreased in the LE group compared with the non-LE group (9.0 ± 5.6 vs. 12.3 ± 6.2, p = 0.032). Recurrence of LE was observed in 14 patients (28%). Initial involvement at the colon (79% vs. 41%, p = 0.026) and bladder with/without the ureter was more common in the recurrent group (57% vs. 25%, p = 0.048). By multivariate analysis, the hazard ratios of variables associated with recurrence were 4.689 for colon involvement (95% confidence interval: 1.245-17.659, p = 0.0220] and 5.468 for cystitis with/without ureteritis (95% confidence interval: 1.629-18.360, p = 0.006). CONCLUSION Colon and urinary tract involvement in LE patients may be associated with the recurrence of LE.

Abstract
Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most commonly diagnosed non-cutaneous cancer and also the second leading cause of cancer deaths among men. Concerns about overdiagnosis and overtreatment of PCa have been growing, leading to more conservative approaches, especially in the treatment of low-risk disease. As PCa is a relatively slow-growing tumor, complications of unnecessary curative management in low-risk PCa can be prevented by active surveillance (AS). AS helps to improve quality of life after deferred treatment. Several AS criteria have been suggested for delayed treatment. Although upgrading and/or upstaging of cancer is a limitation of AS, many reports have shown low rates of cancer-specific mortality up to now. Radical prostatectomy (RP) has been considered as standard treatment for prostate cancer to provide good oncologic outcomes. The increasing use of minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, including robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy, has contributed to better functional outcomes. So far, long-term randomized studies have not conclusively proven the superiority of either AS or RP. Well-designed long-term randomized studies will be required to compare the benefits of AS and immediate RP. Here, we review recent reports on the current status of AS and RP, including delayed RP, and discuss their merits in the management of localized PCa.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Antiplatelet resistance is known to be associated with symptomatic ischemic complication after endovascular coil embolization. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the relationship between antiplatelet resistance and clinically silent thromboembolic complications using DWI in patients who underwent coil embolization for unruptured intracranial aneurysm. MATERIALS AND METHODS Between October 2011 and May 2013, 58 patients with 62 unruptured aneurysms who were measured for antiplatelet response using VerifyNow assay and underwent elective coil embolization for an unruptured aneurysm with posttreatment DWI were enrolled. Diffusion-positive lesions were classified into 3 groups according to the number of lesions (n=0 [grade 0], n<6 [grade I], and n≥6 [grade II]). The relationship between antiplatelet resistance and diffusion-positive lesions was analyzed. RESULTS Sixty-two endovascular coiling procedures were performed on 58 patients. Clopidogrel resistance was revealed in 23 patients (39.7%) and diffusion-positive lesions were demonstrated in 28 patients (48.3%); these consisted of 19 (32.8%) grade I and 9 (15.5%) grade II lesions. Clopidogrel resistance was not relevant to the development of any diffusion-positive lesion (grade I and II, P=.789) but was associated with the development of multiple diffusion-positive lesions (grade II, P=.002). In the logistic regression prediction model, clopidogrel resistance showed significant correlation with the development of grade II lesions (P=.001). CONCLUSIONS Multiple diffusion-positive lesions (≥6 in number) occurred more frequently in patients with clopidogrel resistance after endovascular coiling for unruptured aneurysms.
