Abstract
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Several physiological changes affecting physical fitness occur in humans whenever they are exposed to extremes of environments such as heat, cold and high altitude (HA). The present study was undertaken to evaluate effect of stay in desert and HA on physical fitness and body composition of physically active individuals. METHODS Study was conducted on three groups of male soldiers (n=30 in each group) at different climatic conditions i.e., temperate (plains of north India), hot desert (Rajasthan), and HA (3600 m) in Western Himalayas. Subjects were acclimatized to hot and HA environments and had similar BMI (body mass index). Body fat, lean body mass, haemoglobin levels were determined along with, blood pressure and physical fitness index (PFI). RESULTS The body fat of subjects at temperate, desert and HA was found to be 15.4, 12.8 and 16.9 per cent respectively. The resting heart rate and blood pressure were higher in altitude group in comparison to others. PFI score of volunteers at temperate, desert and HA were found to be 97.4 +/- 10.3, 92.4+/- 14.4 and 83.8 +/- 6.2 respectively. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSION A combination of different factors i.e., higher resting pulse rate, increased blood pressure and body fat may be responsible for lower PFI at HA. The observed differences in body fat content of different groups could be an adaptive feature to the environment.

Abstract
A novel heme peroxidase MGP from the latex of Ipomoea carnea subsp. fistulosa (morning glory) belonging to the Convolvulaceae family was purified to homogeneity using ammonium sulfate precipitation, anion exchange, hydrophobic interaction, and gel filtration chromatography. The enzyme is glycosylated and has a molecular mass of 42.06 kDa (MALDI-TOF) and an isoelectric point of pH 4.3. The enzyme has high yield, broad substrate specificity, and a high stability toward pH, temperature, chaotrophs, and organic solvents. The extinction coefficient (epsilon 280 (1%)) of the enzyme was estimated as 20.56 and it consists of 13 tryptophan, 9 tyrosine, and 8 cysteine residues forming 4 disulfide bridges. There is significant effect of inhibitors targeting S-S bridges (mercaptoethanol, l-cysteine, glutathione), as well as of inhibitors targeting heme (sodium azide and hydroxylamine) on peroxidase activity, whereas inhibition was not observed with ethylmaleinimide due to the absence of reduced cysteine in the enzyme. Polyclonal antibodies against the enzyme have been raised in rabbit, and immunodiffusion suggests that the antigenic determinants of MGP are unique. The N-terminal sequence of MGP (D-E-A-C-I-F-S-A-V-K-E-V-V-D-A) exhibited considerable similarity to the sequence of other known plant peroxidases. Spectroscopic studies (absorbance, fluorescence, and circular dichroism) reveal that MGP has secondary structural features with alpha/beta type with approximately 20% alpha-helicity.

Abstract
Effect of sublethal treatment of (40% and 60% of 48 h LC50) of deltamethrin+MGK on phospholipid level and rate of lipid peroxidation in nervous and foot tissue of Lymnaea acuminata were studied. Maximum reduction in phospholipid (24.10%) level and increase in rate of lipid peroxidation (586.8%) were observed in foot tissue of snail exposed to 60% of 48 h LC50 of deltamethrin+MGK 264 for 96 h. Alterations in the levels of phospholipids and rate of lipid peroxidation were time and concentration dependent. Use of MGK-264 with deltamethrin increases the toxicity of deltamethrin and their action on membrane phospholipids and rate of lipid peroxidation.

Abstract
By means of immunoperoxidase histochemistry through monoclonal antibodies, OKT3+ T cells were detected in the cutaneous lesion of a patient with Sezary syndrome. The majority of the infiltrating cells showed positive staining with OKT4 helper cell marker whereas a few OKT8+ cells were also seen. Many OKT6+ Langerhans' cells accumulated in the epidermis overlaying the dermal infiltrate.

Abstract
AbstractRecent progress in the field of zwitterionic polyelectrolytes is reviewed. This class of polyelectrolytes is only five decades old, since the first synthesis was in 1952. Polycarboxybetaines, polysulfobetaines, polyphosphobetaines and a few more zwitterionic materials compose this class of polymers. In the current search for ‘biomimicking’ materials, this class is particularly important. The responsive properties of polyzwitterions are specific, sensitive and instantaneous to a wide variety of external stimuli, which has been reviewed in this article. The synthesis of polyampholytes and polybetaines (homopolymers, copolymers, block polymers) are reviewed. The exploitation of such materials in solid state conducting materials, chromatographic materials and other applications has been incorporated. The extensive discussion on solution properties, antipolyelectrolytic characteristics and influence of varying class of electrolytes has been qualitative as well as quantitative providing an insight into the importance and relevance of such materials, the block polymers form reversible ‘schizophrenic’ micelles also.

Abstract
The Cpx signalling system of Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica senses extracytoplasmic stress and controls expression of factors that allow the bacterium to adapt to these stressors and thereby enhance survival. Many of the Cpx-responsive genes products are of unknown function. We determined the crystal structure of one of these gene products, called YihE in E. coli, which exhibits a eukaryotic kinase fold. Functional assays established that both YihE and the S. enterica YihE homologue, RdoA, undergo autophosphorylation and phosphorylate protein substrates at Ser/Thr residues in vitro, demonstrating that YihE/RdoA is a novel Ser/Thr protein kinase in prokaryotic cells. Phenotypic analysis of yihE/rdoA null strains indicates that this kinase is most abundant in stationary phase, and is important for long-term cell survival and for expression of surface appendages in both a Cpx-independent and -dependent manner. YihE/RdoA is therefore a previously unknown kinase component of a new type of bacterial phosphorelay mechanism, adding kinase activity as another response to the Cpx sensing system that functions to maintain cellular homeostasis.

Abstract
The least understood components of the DNA damage checkpoint are the DNA damage sensors. Genetic studies of Schizosaccharomyces pombe identified six yeast genes, Rad3, Rad17, Rad9, Rad1, Hus1, and Rad26, which encode proteins thought to sense DNA damage and activate the checkpoint-signaling cascade. It has been suggested that Rad9, Rad1 and Hus1 make a heterotrimeric complex forming a PCNA-like structure. In order to carry out structural and biophysical studies of the complex and its associated proteins, the cDNAs encoding full length human Rad9, Rad1 and Hus1 were cloned together into the pET28a vector using a one-step ligation procedure. Here we report successful tri-cistronic cloning, overexpression and purification of this three-protein complex using a single hexa-histidine tag. The trimeric protein complex of Rad9, Rad1 and Hus1 was purified to near homogeneity, yielding approximately 10mg of protein from one liter of Escherichia coli culture.

Abstract
Humoral immune response was studied in dogs vaccinated with different tissue culture vaccines commonly used for immunization of dogs in India. The results revealed that after single dose of vaccination only 56% dogs developed protective titer (> or = 1:8). The response of the three vaccines used in the study was not similar, highlighting the need to maintain post marketing surveillance.

Abstract
Two different benzimidazole analogues act as multimodal agent, first one as novel non-peptidic CCK-B receptor antagonist and similarly as potent anti-fungal agent, designated as [Bz-Im]. These compounds were synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic techniques such as FT-IR, NMR, EI-MS and also evaluated for specific radiopharmaceuticals. Preliminary radiolabeling results with (99m)Tc and biological evaluation studies showed promising results for further evaluation in vivo. The efficiency of labeling was more than 97% and complex was stable for about 12h at 30 degrees C in the presence of serum. Both ligands showed binding to most of the organs, known to express CCK receptors in biodistribution studies. Cholecystokinin (CCK(1) andCCK(2)) receptor binding affinities of these analogues are, IC(50), 0.942+/-0.107 for compound C and 0.665+/-0.211 for compound D in rat pancreatic acini. The anti-fungal activity has shown inhibitory activity against Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus niger. These studies have provided a new template for further development of non-peptidic ligands for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes of diseases related with CCK receptors as well as anti-microbes.

Abstract
The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of FecB genotypes on body weight, average daily gain (ADG), ewe's productivity efficiency (EPE) and litter size in FecB introgressed GarolexMalpura (GM) crossbred sheep. A total of 235 GM lambs were selected randomly and screened for FecB mutation using forced RFLP-PCR. The majority (69.8%) of GM individuals were carriers (BB and B+) for the FecB mutation and frequency of the FecB allele was about 0.40. The FecB genotypes were significantly (P<0.01) associated with the lamb's body weights from birth to 12 months of age. The generation wise (F(1), F(2) and F(3)), lamb's body weight did not differ significantly at birth, 6 and 12 months of the age, while it differed significantly (P<0.05) at 3 and 9 months of age. The ADG1 (0-3 months) was significantly associated (P<0.05), but not the ADG2 (3-6 months) and ADG3 (6-12 months) between genotypes. Type of birth and sex significantly (P<0.01) affected the body weight from birth to 12 months of age; and body weight of single born lambs was significantly higher (P<0.01) than that of twins and triplets from birth to 12 months of age. Type of birth significantly (P<0.01) affected the ADG1, but had no significant effect on ADG2 and ADG3. Year of birth did not affect the birth and weaning weights, but it significantly affected (P<0.01) the body weight and ADG's after weaning ages. The EPE was affected significantly (P<0.01) by the FecB genotypes at birth, 3 and 12 months of age. The EPE of B+ and BB ewes were 7.86 kg (36.9%) and 2.32 kg (10.9%) higher as compared to ++ ewes at 12 months of age, respectively. The mean litter size of BB ewes (2.17+/-0.24) was significantly higher (P<0.01) than that of B+ ewes (1.73+/-0.04) and ++ ewes (1.03+/-0.23). The present study indicated that the body weight and ADG of carrier lambs (BB and B+) was comparatively lower than that of non-carriers (++), while EPE of B+ ewes was comparatively higher than that of BB and ++ ewes. Further, it is interesting to note that heterozygous and homozygous state of individuals increased 0.70 and 1.14 extra lambs as compared to non-carriers (++), respectively.

Abstract
A new quinazolone series has been designed, and synthesized by the anthranilic acid and different acid derivatives. Their structures have been elucidated on the basis of elemental analyses and spectral studies (IR, (1)H NMR, FT-IR and FAB-MS). A preliminary radiolabelling study with technetium has shown a very good future prospect for further evaluation in vivo. The biological activities (antifungal, antibacterial as well as anticancerous) of the evaluated compounds are discussed in this article.

Recent sequencing of genomes of several microorganisms provides an opportunity to have access to huge volumes of data stored in various databases. This has resulted in the development of various computational and visualization tools to aid in retrieval and analysis of data. Development of user friendly genome data mapping and visualization tools facilitates researchers to closely examine various features of genes and make inferences from the displayed data efficiently. PGV - Prokaryotic Genome Viewer is a Java based web application tool capable of generating high quality interactive circular chromosome maps. With simple mouse roll over tasks on the interested region on the displayed map, the user is provided with features such as feature labeling, multi-fold zooming, image rotation and hyperlinking to different information resources. The tool is capable of instantaneously generating maps using user-supplied sequence data.

Abstract
The Garole is a prolific breed of microsheep that possesses the FecB gene, which increases ovulation rate. The purpose of this study was to compare embryo production by multiple ovulation in seven Garole ewes with that in seven normal size, non-prolific Malpura ewes, and assess the influence of the large body size of Awassi crossbred recipient ewes on the birth-weight of Garole lambs. Oestrus was synchronised with two intramuscular injections of 7.5 mg prostaglandin F(2alpha) administered 10 days apart. The donor ewes were superovulated by the use of pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin and follicle-stimulating hormone. The onset and duration of oestrus were similar in both breeds. The Garole donors had higher total mean (se) ovarian responses (15.6 [3.6] v 9.1 [2.3]), ovulation rate (13.6 [3.1] v 8.4 [2.2]) and produced more transferable embryos (6.0 [3.5] v 4.0 [0.9]) than the Malpura donors, but the differences were not statistically significant. The Garole lambs produced by embryo transfer were on average 57.8 per cent heavier at birth than contemporary Garole lambs produced by natural mating.

These synthesized compounds were characterized on the basis of spectroscopic techniques and evaluated for specific radiopharmaceuticals. Preliminary radiolabeling results with (99m)Tc and biological evaluation studies showed promising results for further evaluation in vivo. The efficiency of labeling was more than 98% and complexes were stable for about 18 h at 25 degrees C in the presence of serum.

Abstract
Our mtDNA and Y chromosome studies lead to the conclusion that the Andamanese "Negrito" mtDNA lineages have survived in the Andaman Islands in complete genetic isolation from other South and Southeast Asian populations since the initial settlement of the region by the out-of-Africa migration. In order to obtain a robust reconstruction of the evolutionary history of the Andamanese, we carried out a study on the three aboriginal populations, namely, the Great Andamanese, Onge and Nicobarese, using autosomal microsatellite markers. The range of alleles (7-31.2) observed in the studied population and heterozygosity values (0.392-0.857) indicate that the selected STR markers are highly polymorphic in all the three populations, and genetic variability within the populations is significantly high, with a mean gene diversity of 77%. The Andaman "Negrito" populations do not show particular affinities either with the African populations or with the Indian populations, confirming their unique origin. In contrast, Nicobarese show close affinities with the Southeast Asian populations, suggesting their recent entry in the Islands.

Abstract
We have analyzed nine autosomal STR loci (D3S1358, vWA, FGA, D8S1179, D21S11, D18S51, D5S818, D13S317, and D7S820) in 97 samples of enigmatic Andaman islanders including: 15 Great Andamanese, 46 Onge and 36 Nicobarese. Data was compared with the available data on Indian and South East Asian populations. Heterozygosity (H), power of discrimination (PD), probability exclusion (PE), typical paternity index (TPI), polymorphism information content (PIC), AMOVA and Arlequin analysis were carried out. Average heterozygosity observed was high and almost equal in all the populations. Similarly, PD, PE, TPI and PIC have been almost equal in all the populations.

BACKGROUND Noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) has emerged as a significant advancement in the management of acute respiratory failure. OBJECTIVE To identify factors, based on clinical and laboratory parameters, for predicting the outcome of NIPPV in patients with acute respiratory failure. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifty patients were included in the study. Inclusion criteria were RR>30 breaths/ min, PaO2<60mmHg, PaO2/FiO2<300, pCO2< or = 45mmHg and signs of increased work of breathing. Baseline clinical parameters and arterial blood gas (ABG) were recorded before initiating NIPPV. Clinical parameters including heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation and ABG was revaluated at 1, 4, 12, 24 hrs after initiation of NIPPV. Change in these parameters and need for intubation was evaluated. RESULTS Of the 50 patients, 37 (74%) showed clinical and ABG improvement. Out of 13 (26%) patients who failed to respond, 7 (52%) needed endotracheal intubation within 1 hr. There was significant improvement in clinical and ABG parameters within 1st hr in success group and these parameters continues to improve even after 4 hrs of NIPPV treatment (p<0.05). Failure group had higher baseline heart rate than success group (p<0.05). CONCLUSION Determination of baseline clinical factors such as heart rate and respiratory rate, available at the time of initiation and after a short period, can predict the likelihood of success or failure of NIPPV. As a result, delay in intubation can be avoided which itself is associated with significant mortality.

Abstract
Bcl-2 (B Cell Lymphoma) protein is an anti-apoptotic member of Bcl-2 family, which is comprised of pro- and anti-apoptotic members. It regulates cellular proliferation and death by inter- and intra-family interactions. It has a potential to suppress apoptotic cell death under variety of stress conditions by modulating mitochondrial transmembrane potential. However, prevalence of constitutively activated Bcl-2 cellular activity is not always required in cells; a mechanism likely exists in cells, which controls its activity. When expression of Bcl-2 is unregulated, it generates lymphoma like, follicular B-cell lymphoma. This article reviews the structural and functional regulation of Bcl-2 activity at transcriptional, translational, domain, structural and post-translational level, which also accounts for the effects of its deletion and site-directed mutants in the regulation of cellular proliferation and differentiation in vitro and in vivo. This concisely reviewed information on Bcl-2 helps us to update our understanding of cell death and its modulation by Bcl-2 and its mutant's interaction, which has gained therapeutic benefits in cell growth and proliferation, particularly for sensitive human hematopoietic stem cells.

Abstract
Infiltration of the leptomeninges by a malignant glioma typically occurs with recurrent supratentorial tumors, but patients may present with leptomeningeal gliomatosis before the primary tumor is diagnosed. This report describes two patients who presented with headache and signs of multifocal neurological disease. One of the patients had neurofibromatosis type I. In both patients the cerebrospinal fluid examination showed a mild pleocytosis, but malignant cells were not detected. The diagnosis of leptomeningeal gliomatosis was not confirmed until autopsy, but in retrospect imaging showed a small, asymptomatic primary tumor in both patients. Leptomeningeal gliomatosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of chronic meningitis, if the patient is afebrile and if there are multifocal neurological signs, even when a primary tumor is not obvious.
