Abstract
gem-Difluoroalkenes and trifluoromethyl alkanes are prominent structures in biologically active compounds. Radical alkylation of α-trifluoromethyl alkenes represents a useful strategy to access these structures. However, reported methods have relied on the use of pre-functionalized radical precursors and examples involving the use of simple hydrocarbons as coupling partners are elusive. Here we report a chemodivergent methodology based on the direct activation of C(sp3)-H bonds enabled by HAT photoredox catalysis. This protocol provides an efficient platform for preparing both gem-difluoroalkenes and trifluoromethyl alkanes from ubiquitous hydrocarbon feedstocks, including gaseous alkanes. Importantly, chemoselectivity is easily achieved by simple modification of reaction conditions and/or additives.

Abstract
The synthesis of deuterated gem-difluoroalkenes via selective deuterodefluorination of β-CF3-cinnamates using a nickel catalyst has been reported for the first time. Commercially available deuterated formic acid is a cheap and convenient deuterium source. The nickel-catalyst showed high selectivity for monodefluorination and avoided competitive reactions such as multiple defluorination or hydrogenation.

Abstract
A feasible and effective method to synthesize α-fluoroalkenyl alcohols was reported. With the cooperation of photoredox and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) processes, defluoroalkylations of gem-difluoroalkenes occurred smoothly with alcohols under visible-light irradiation. Notably, the protocols feature broad scopes, mild conditions, and validity for the late-stage functionalization of bioactive molecule derivatives. Mechanistic studies suggested that the reaction occurred through the radical coupling of the alkyl radical and the fluoroalkenyl radical.

Abstract
In the last few years, many reagents and protocols have been developed to allow for the efficient fluorofunctionalization of a diverse set of scaffolds ranging from alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, and (hetero)arenes. The concomitant rise of organofluorine chemistry and visible light-mediated synthesis have synergistically expanded the fields and have mutually benefitted from developments in both fields. In this context, visible light driven formations of radicals containing fluorine have been a major focus for the discovery of new bioactive compounds. This review details the recent advances and progress made in visible light-mediated fluoroalkylation and heteroatom centered radical generation.

Abstract
Radical defluorinative functionalization of α-trifluoromethyl styrenes represents an effective way toward gem-difluoroalkenes. There are general interests in developing novel synthetic protocols for defluorinative functionalization with various types of radicals. However, reports on the preparation of gem-difluoro allylsulfones via an S-centered radical pathway are limited. Herein, we developed a photo/nickel dual-catalyzed defluorinative sulfonylation that rapidly and reliably synthesizes gem-difluoro allylsulfones. The merit of this protocol is exhibited by its mild conditions and wide scope, thus providing a novel strategy for the sulfonyl radical participating in radical defluorinative coupling.

Abstract
The direct monofluoroalkenylation of C(sp3)-H bonds is of great importance and quite challenging. Current methods have been restricted to the monofluoroalkenylation of activated C(sp3)-H bonds. Here, we reported the photocatalyzed C(sp3)-H monofluoroalkenylation of inactivated C(sp3)-H bonds with gem-difluoroalkenes via 1,5-hydrogen atom transfer. This process shows good functional group tolerance, such as halides (F, Cl), nitrile, sulfone, ester, and pyridine, and good γ-selectivity. Moreover, this method succeeds in the photocatalyzed gem-difluoroallylation of inactivated C(sp3)-H with α-trifluoromethyl alkenes.

Abstract
The development of strategies for single and selective C-F bond activation represents an important avenue to overcome limitations in the synthesis of valuable fluorine-containing compounds. The synthetic and medicinal research communities would benefit from new routes that access such relevant molecules in a simple manner. Herein we disclose a straightforward and mechanistically distinct pathway to generate gem-difluoromethyl radicals and their installation onto N-arylmethacrylamides for the preparation of valuable difluorinated oxindole derivatives. To achieve operational simplicity, the use of a readily available benzenethiol as a photocatalyst under open-to-air conditions was developed, demonstrating the facile multigram preparation of the targeted fluorinated molecules. Additionally, dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT) and empirical investigations provide a new basis to support the proposed reaction pathway, indicating that arene thiolate is an efficient organophotocatalyst for this transformation.

Abstract
Alkenes and their derivatives are featured widely in a variety of natural products, pharmaceuticals, and advanced materials. Significant efforts have been made toward the development of new and practical methods to access this important class of compounds by selectively activating the alkenyl C(sp2)-H bonds in recent years. In this comprehensive review, we describe the state-of-the-art strategies for the direct functionalization of alkenyl sp2 C-H and C-F bonds until June 2022. Moreover, metal-free, photoredox, and electrochemical strategies are also covered. For clarity, this review has been divided into two parts; the first part focuses on currently available alkenyl sp2 C-H functionalization methods using different alkene derivatives as the starting materials, and the second part describes the alkenyl sp2 C-F bond functionalization using easily accessible gem-difluoroalkenes as the starting material. This review includes the scope, limitations, mechanistic studies, stereoselective control (using directing groups as well as metal-migration strategies), and their applications to complex molecule synthesis where appropriate. Overall, this comprehensive review aims to document the considerable advancements, current status, and emerging work by critically summarizing the contributions of researchers working in this fascinating area and is expected to stimulate novel, innovative, and broadly applicable strategies for alkenyl sp2 C-H and C-F bond functionalizations in the coming years.

Abstract
A photocatalytic three-component reaction of α-trifluoromethyl alkenes, electron-rich alkenes, and sodium sulfinates for the synthesis of gem-difluoroalkenes in a radical/polar crossover manner was developed. Due to the strong electron-withdrawing nature of the sulfonyl group, the resultant gem-difluoroalkenes can be converted into various monofluorocyclopentenes via intramolecular base-mediated SNV reactions in one pot.

Abstract
Herein, we report a direct, light-mediated defluorosilylation protocol for converting α-trifluoromethyl arylalkenes and alkyl silanes into γ,γ-difluoroallylic compounds via a combination of photoredox catalysis and hydrogen atom transfer. The clean, convenient protocol can be scaled to the gram level, and its mild conditions make it very suitable for late-stage functionalization of complex natural products and drugs.

Abstract
The first synthesis of gem-difluorinated ene-ynamides is presented via deprotonation of trifluoromethylated N-allenamides and δ extrusion of fluorine. These highly reactive building blocks, owing to their dual functional groups, offer a unique entry to difluorinated dienes and to stereodefined, monofluoro-substituted dienes. Stereoselective addition to the ynamide moiety led to difluorinated dienes. A stereocontrolled domino δ elimination reaction followed by an addition/elimination sequence from trifluoromethylated N-allenamides provided exclusively stereodefined monofluorinated ene-ynamides.

C(sp3)–F Bond Transformation of Perfluoroalkyl Compounds Mediated by Visible-Light Photocatalysis: Spin-Center Shifts and Radical/Polar Crossover Processes via Anionic Intermediates. Abstract
AbstractDue to its large bond energy, precisely controllable C–F bond activation is a significant challenge in organic synthesis. A single C(sp3)–F bond transformation of perfluoroalkyl groups is particularly desirable to supply functionalized perfluoroalkyl compounds offering properties that are potentially useful in pharmaceutical and materials chemistry. Recently, the single defluorinative transformation of perfluoroalkyl compounds has been developed via visible-light photocatalysis. Herein, we summarize this field via two main topics. Topic 1 covers the transformations of C(sp3)–F bonds in either perfluoroalkylarenes or perfluoroalkane carbonyl compounds via a defluorinative spin-center shift in the radical anion intermediates. Topic 2 addresses the defluorinative transformations of α-trifluoromethyl alkenes to give gem-difluoroalkenes via a radical/polar crossover process.1 Introduction2 C(sp3)–F Transformations via Defluorinative Spin-Center Shifts3 C(sp3)–F Transformations via a Radical/Polar Crossover Process4 Conclusions

Abstract
An organic photoredox-catalyzed gem-difluoroallylation of α-trifluoromethyl alkenes with alkyl iodides via C-F bond cleavage for the synthesis of gem-difluoroalkene derivatives is reported. This transition-metal-free transformation utilized a readily available organic dye 4CzIPN as the sole photocatalyst and employed a common chemical N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine as the radical activator of alkyl iodides via halogen-atom transfer. In addition, a variety of iodides, including primary, secondary, and tertiary alkyl iodides, were tolerated and provided good to high yields.

We herein report a novel and more practical approach to prepare gem-dibromoenones from terminal alkynes, tetrabromomethane (CBr4), and water in a single step. Mechanistic studies reveal that the generation of a tribromomethyl radical with the assistance of a persulfate salt (K2S2O8) is essential to this transformation. The reaction features readily available chemicals, a broad substrate scope, a green solvent, and mild reaction conditions, providing an efficient alternative for construction of halogen-substituted enones.

Abstract
The creation of new bonds via C-F bond cleavage of readily available per- or oligofluorinated compounds has received growing interest. Using such a strategy, a myriad of valuable partially fluorinated products can be prepared, which otherwise are difficult to make by the conventional C-F bond formation methods. Visible light photoredox catalysis has been proven as an important and powerful tool for defluorinative reactions due to its mild, easy to handle, and environmentally benign characteristics. Compared to the classical C-F activation that proceeds via two-electron processes, radicals are the key intermediates using visible light photoredox catalysis, providing new modes for the cleavage of C-F bonds. In this review, a summary of the visible light-promoted C-F bond cleavage since 2018 was presented. The contents were classified by the fluorosubstrates, including polyfluorinated arenes, gem-difluoroalkenes, trifluoromethyl arenes, and trifluoromethyl alkenes. An emphasis is placed on the discussion of the mechanisms and limitations of these reactions. Finally, my personal perspective on the future development of this rapidly emerging field was provided.

Abstract
Herein, a new example of relay catalysis, using a combination of Mn2(CO)10 and an iridium-based photocatalyst, is reported. In our relay catalytic reaction, the Mn catalyst and iridium-based photocatalyst catalyze the reaction at different stages in the desired sequence under the same reaction conditions, and do not inhibit each other. This convenient method transforms a broad scope of alkyl iodides into the corresponding gem-difluoroalkenes via C(sp3)-C(sp3) bond construction. The protocol has good functional group tolerance and is suitable for the late-stage modification of multifunctional complex molecules.

Abstract
DNA-encoded library (DEL) technology features a time- and cost-effective interrogation format for the discovery of therapeutic candidates in the pharmaceutical industry. To develop DEL platforms, the implementation of water-compatible transformations that facilitate the incorporation of multifunctional building blocks (BBs) with high C(sp3) carbon counts is integral for success. In this report, a decarboxylative-based hydroalkylation of DNA-conjugated trifluoromethyl-substituted alkenes enabled by single-electron transfer (SET) and subsequent hydrogen atom termination through electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complex activation is detailed. In a further photoredox-catalyzed hydroarylation protocol, the coupling of functionalized, electronically unbiased olefins is achieved under air and within minutes of blue light irradiation through the intermediacy of reactive (hetero)aryl radical species with full retention of the DNA tag integrity. Notably, these processes operate under mild reaction conditions, furnishing complex structural scaffolds with a high density of pendant functional groups.

Abstract
Four unprecedented base-catalyzed/mediated nucleophilic additions of TMSCN to α-(trifluoromethyl)styrenes and 2-trifluoromethyl enynes were developed. The reaction proceeded smoothly at room temperature under mild and transition-metal-free conditions without affecting the trifluoromethyl group and afforded the corresponding CF3-containing alkyl, alkynyl, and butadienyl nitriles in moderate to excellent yields in a highly regioselective manner, respectively.

Abstract
The activation of a carbon-fluorine bond is one of the most challenging topics in modern synthetic organic chemistry due to their low reactivity compared to other carbon-halogen bonds. In this review, we present the recent developments since 2015 on cross-coupling reactions that form C-C bonds via cleavage of C(sp2 )-F bonds. Not only the conventional activation of C(sp2 )-F bonds, but also decarbonylative or carbonyl-retentive cleavage of C(acyl)-F bonds will be introduced. This paper mainly describes new protocols for the formation of C(sp2 )-C(sp3 ), C(sp2 )-C(sp2 ), and C(sp2 )-C(sp) bonds via transition-metal-catalyzed cleavage of C(sp2 )-F bonds.

Abstract
A novel strategy enabled cleavage of two C(sp3)-F bonds in a CF3 group is reported. Triggered by ipso-defluorinative amination, this 1,3-diamination of (trifluoromethyl)alkenes with indoles, carbazoles, pyrroles, and sulfonamides gave acyclic 1,3-diamine products bearing a monofluoroalkene moiety in high yields with good to excellent Z/E selectivities. Preliminary mechanistic studies enable the isolation of the reaction intermediate and indicate that a unique sequential ipso-/γ-selective defluorinative amination pathway is involved in this transformation.
