Abstract
Photoactivatable fluorescent probes are valuable tools in bioimaging for tracking cells down to single molecules and for single molecule localization microscopy. For the latter application, green emitting dyes are in demand. We herein developed an efficient green-emitting photoactivatable furanyl-BODIPY (PFB) and we established a new mechanism of photoactivation called Directed Photooxidation Induced Activation (DPIA) where the furan is photo-oxidized in a directed manner by the singlet oxygen produced by the probe. The efficient photoconverter (93-fold fluorescence enhancement at 510 nm, 49 % yield conversion) is functionalizable and allowed targeting of several subcellular structures and organelles, which were photoactivated in live cells. Finally, we demonstrated the potential of PFB in super-resolution imaging by performing PhotoActivated Localization Microscopy (PALM) in live cells.

Abstract
Self-assembly of chromophoric systems is a prerequisite to create well-ordered, processable nanomaterials with multiple functionalities. In the past two decades, the field of functional organic materials has primarily focused on systems featuring only one type of dye/π-conjugated unit. Consequently, many reports with mechanistic insights on the self-assembly of the dyes featuring different molecular packing have been reported. Subsequently, we have witnessed several attempts to organize the multi-chromophoric systems in solution and solid-state via different approaches using self-assembly as a tool. Incorporation of more than one dye is important in creating materials with tuneable optoelectronic properties. Consequently, self-assembly of more than one chromophoric systems have been investigated to some extent. This review aims to discuss the self-assembled materials derived from discrete π-conjugated systems comprising more than one dye units connected through covalent bonding (multi-chromophoric systems). Molecular design of various multi-chromophoric systems leading to the formation of crystals, liquid crystals and supramolecular polymers have been correlated with corresponding properties. We envisage that classification of self-assembled multi-chromophoric systems, with a note on tuneable optoelectronic properties, can provide a deeper understanding on the molecular design strategies, which is important in the fabrication of functional organic materials with optimum performances.

Abstract
The chemosensor literature contains many reports of fluorescence sensing using polyaromatic hydrocarbon fluorophores such as pyrene, tetraphenylethylene, or polyaryl(ethynylene), where the fluorophore is excited with ultraviolet light (<400 nm) and emits in the visible region of 400-500 nm. There is a need for general methods that convert these "turn-on" hydrocarbon fluorescent sensors into ratiometric sensing paradigms. One simple strategy is to mix the responsive hydrocarbon sensor with a second non-responsive dye that is excited by ultraviolet light but emits at a distinctly longer wavelength and thus acts as a reference signal. Five new cyanine dye cassettes were created by covalently attaching a pyrene, tetraphenylethylene, or biphenyl(ethynylene) component as the ultraviolet-absorbing energy donor directly to the pentamethine chain of a deep-red cyanine (Cy5) energy acceptor. Fluorescence emission studies showed that these Cy5-cassettes exhibited large pseudo-Stokes shifts and high through-bond energy transfer efficiencies upon excitation with ultraviolet light. Practical potential was demonstrated with two examples of ratiometric fluorescence sensing using a single ultraviolet excitation wavelength. One example mixed a Cy5-cassette with a pyrene-based fluorescent indicator that responded to changes in Cu2+ concentration, and the other example mixed a Cy5-cassette with the fluorescent pH sensing dye, pyranine.

Abstract
The multifold Sonogashira coupling of a class of aryl halides with arylacetylene in the presence of an equivalent of Cs2CO3 has been accomplished using a combination of Pd(CH3CN)2Cl2 (0.5 mol %) and cataCXium A (1 mol %) under copper-free and amine-free conditions in a readily available green solvent at room temperature. The protocol was used to transform several aryl halides and alkynes to the corresponding coupled products in good to excellent yields. The rate-determining step is likely to involve the oxidative addition of Ar-X. The green protocol provides access to various valuable polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with exciting photophysical properties. Among them, six tetraalkynylated anthracenes have been tested for their anticancer properties on the human triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cell line MDA-MB-231 and human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs). The 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay was performed to find out the IC50 concentration and lethal dose. The compounds being intrinsically fluorescent, their cellular localization was checked by live cell fluorescence imaging. 4',6-Diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) and propidium iodide (PI) staining was performed to check apoptosis and necrosis, respectively. All of these studies have shown that anthracene and its derivatives can induce cell death via DNA damage and apoptosis.

Abstract
A facile route for direct access to the 4-iodopyrrole-2-carbaldehydes from pyridinium salts has been successfully developed, which undergoes cascade pyrrole-2-carbaldehydes construction/selective C4 position iodination process. Using Na2S2O8 as an oxidant and readily available sodium iodide as an iodine source, a variety of 4-iodopyrrole-2-carbaldehydes were obtained in good to excellent yields. Atom- and step-economy, good functional group tolerance, high regioselectivity, as well as mild conditions entail this transformation an alternative strategy for enriching pyrroles library.

Abstract
Three examples of 9-bromo-10-(alkylidynyl)anthracenes, [W{CC(C6H4)2CBr}(CO)2(L)] (L = hydrotris(dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate Tp*, hydrotris(pyrazol-1-yl)borate Tp, hydrotris(2-mercapto-N-methylimidazol-1-yl)borate Tm) were prepared via modified Fischer-Mayr acyl oxide-abstraction protocols. With a sufficiently bulky ancillary ligand (L = Tp*) the aryl bromide is ammenable to cross-coupling reactions that enable more elaborate derivatives to be prepared. These including symmetric bis(alkylidynyl)anthracenes as well as non-palindromic examples bearing disparate metals and/or co-ligands. In contrast, these couplings fail for smaller ligands (L = Tp, Tm) where it was found that Pd0 or Pt0 were instead able to coordinate across two WC bonds to give trimetallic bow-tie complexes, [W2M{μ-CC(C6H4)2CBr}2(CO)4(L)2] (M = Pd, Pt; L = Tp, Tm).

Abstract
Photosensitization associated with light absorption and energy/electron-transfer represents the central processes for photosynthesis. However, it's still a challenge to develop a heavy-atom-free (HAF) strategy to improve the sensitizing ability of polymeric photosensitizers. Herein, we propose a new protocol to significantly improve the photosensitization by decorating mother conjugated microporous polymer (CMP-1) with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), resulting in a series of CMPs (CMP-2-4). Systematic study reveals that covalent modification with PAHs can transfer charge to Bodipy in CMP to further facilitate both intersystem crossing and electron-hole separation, which can dramatically boost energy-/electron-transfer reactions. Remarkably, CMP-2 as a representative CMP can efficiently drive the photosynthesis of methyl phenyl sulfoxide with 92 % yield, substantially higher than that of CMP-1 (32 %). Experiments and theory calculations demonstrate the structure-property-activity relationship of these CMPs, opening a new horizon for developing HAF heterogeneous photosensitizers with highly efficient sensitizing activity by rational structure regulation at a molecular level.

Abstract
Coelenterazine (CTZ) is the most general substrate for marine luciferases. The present protocol introduces a near-infrared (NIR ) bioluminescence (BL) imaging of mammalian cells with a cyanine-5 (Cy5) dye-conjugated CTZ . This unique Cy5-conjugated CTZ, named Cy5-CTZ , can act as a dual optical readout emitting both fluorescence (FL) and BL. The Cy5-CTZ exerts through-bond energy transfer (TBET)-based imaging modalities for mammalian cells. This novel derivative, Cy5-CTZ , is intrinsically fluorescent and emits NIR-shifted BL when reacting with an appropriate luciferase , such as Renilla luciferase (RLuc). The protocol exemplifies a unique live-cell imaging with Cy5-CTZ that is optically stable in physiological samples and rapidly permeabilize through plasma membrane and emit NIR-BL in live mammalian cells.

Abstract
Meso-substituted borondipyrromethene (BODIPY)-porphyrin compounds that include free base porphyrin with two different numbers of BODIPY groups (BDP-TTP and 3BDP-TTP) were designed and synthesized to analyze intramolecular energy transfer mechanisms of meso-substituted BODIPY-porphyrin dyads and the effect of the different numbers of BODIPY groups connected to free-base porphyrin on the energy transfer mechanism. Absorption spectra of BODIPY-porphyrin conjugates showed wide absorption features in the visible region, and that is highly valuable to increase light-harvesting efficiency. Fluorescence spectra of the studied compounds proved that BODIPY emission intensity decreased upon the photoexcitation of the BODIPY core, due to the energy transfer from BODIPY unit to porphyrin. In addition, ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy measurements indicated that the energy transfer of the 3BDP-TTP compound (about 3 ps) is faster than the BDP-TTP compound (about 22 ps). Since the BODIPY core directly binds to the porphyrin unit, rapid energy transfer was seen for both compounds. Thus, the energy transfer rate increased with an increasing number of BODIPY moiety connected to free-base porphyrin.

Abstract
A novel 4,4-difuoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) copolymer with diethynylbenzene has been synthesised, and its ability to act as a photosensitiser for the photocatalytic generation of hydrogen was investigated by time-resolved spectroscopic techniques spanning the ps- to ns-timescales. Both transient absorption and time-resolved infrared spectroscopy were used to probe the excited state dynamics of this photosensitising unit in a variety of solvents. These studies indicated how environmental factors can influence the photophysics of the BODIPY polymer. A homogeneous photocatalytic hydrogen evolution system has been developed using the BODIPY copolymer and cobaloxime which provides hydrogen evolution rates of 319 μmol h−1 g−1 after 24 h of visible irradiation.

Abstract
Arrays of hydroporphyrins with boron complexes of dipyrromethene (BODIPY) are a promising platform for biomedical imaging or solar energy conversion, but their photophysical properties have been relatively unexplored. In this paper, we use time-resolved fluorescence, femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, and density-functional-theory calculations to elucidate solvent-dependent energy and electron-transfer processes in a series of chlorin- and bacteriochlorin-BODIPY arrays. Excitation of the BODIPY moiety results in ultrafast energy transfer to the hydroporphyrin moiety, regardless of the solvent. In toluene, energy is most likely transferred via the through-space Förster mechanism from the S1 state of BODIPY to the S2 state of hydroporphyrin. In DMF, substantially faster energy transfer is observed, which implies a contribution of the through-bond Dexter mechanism. In toluene, excited hydroporphyrin components show bright fluorescence, with quantum yield and fluorescence lifetime comparable to those of the benchmark monomer, whereas in DMF, moderate to significant reduction of both quantum yield and fluorescence lifetime are observed. We attribute this quenching to photoinduced charge transfer from hydroporphyrin to BODIPY. No direct spectral signature of the charge-separated state is observed, which suggests that either (1) the charge-separated state decays very quickly to the ground state or (2) virtual charge-separated states, close in energy to S1 of hydroporphyrin, promote ultrafast internal conversion.

Abstract
Benzoquinone and 9-phenylanthracene barely undergo anticipated cycloaddition under acid catalysis. Instead, 9-anthracenyl aryl ethers are obtained as unexpected products. Mechanistic studies indicate that the reaction likely undergoes an ionic mechanism between protonated anthracene species and nucleophilic oxygen of 1,4-benzoquinone or 1,4-hydroquinone. A variety of 9-anthracenyl aryl ethers are constructed with this method. Produced anthracenyl aryl ethers are potential scaffolds for new fluorescent molecules.

Abstract
A coelenterazine (CTZ) analogue emitting near-infrared (NIR) bioluminescence was synthesized for through-bond energy transfer (TBET)-based imaging modalities. The analogue, named Cy5-CTZ, was prepared by conjugating cyanine-5 (Cy5) dye to CTZ through an acetylene linker. This novel derivative is intrinsically fluorescent and emits NIR-shifted luminescence upon reacting with an appropriate luciferase, the Renilla luciferase. This Cy5-CTZ substrate is optically stable in physiological samples and rapidly permeabilize through the plasma membrane into the cytosolic compartment of live cells.

Abstract
The photophysics of a molecular triad consisting of a BODIPY dye and two pyrene chromophores attached in 2-position are investigated by steady state and fs-time resolved transient absorption spectroscopy as well as by field induced surface hopping (FISH) simulations. While the steady state measurements indicate moderate chromophore interactions within the triad, the time resolved measurements show upon pyrene excitation a delocalised excited state which localises onto the BODIPY chromophore with a time constant of 0.12 ps. This could either be interpreted as an internal conversion process within the excitonically coupled chromophores or as an energy transfer from the pyrenes to the BODIPY dye. The analysis of FISH-trajectories reveals an oscillatory behaviour where the excitation hops between the pyrene units and the BODIPY dye several times until finally they become localised on the BODIPY chromophore within 100 fs. This is accompanied by an ultrafast nonradiative relaxation within the excitonic manifold mediated by the nonadiabatic coupling. Averaging over an ensemble of trajectories allowed us to simulate the electronic state population dynamics and determine the time constants for the nonradiative transitions that mediate the ultrafast energy transfer and exciton localisation on BODIPY.

Abstract
The photoinduced dynamics of two DTE-BODIPY conjugates A, B with carboxylic acid anchoring groups coupled to the surface of TiO2 were studied by ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy. For compound A, with an orthogonal orientation of the BODIPY chromophore and the photoswitchable DTE unit, a charge separated state could not be reliably detected. Nevertheless, besides the energy transfer from the BODIPY to the ring-closed DTE-c, indications for an electron transfer reaction were found by analyzing fluorescence quenching on TiO2 in steady state fluorescence measurements. For compound B with a parallel orientation of chromophore and photoswitch, a charge separated state was conclusively identified for the coupled dyad (TiO2) via the observation of a positive absorption signal (at λ pr > 610 nm) at later delay times. An electron transfer rate of 7 × 1010 s-1 can be extracted, indicating slower processes in the dyads in comparison to previously published electron transfer reactions of DTE compounds coupled to TiO2.

Abstract
A versatile and rapid access to various chain lengths of ethylene-bridged BODIPY motifs was discovered. Corresponding oligomers comprising up to eight monomeric units were studied with respect to their microstructures by photophysical, X-ray crystallographic, and computational means. The investigation of three different dipyrrin cores revealed a crucial dependence on the substitution pattern of the core, whereas the nature of the meso-periphery is less critical. The impact of substituent effects on the conformational space was investigated by Monte Carlo simulations and a set of DFT methods (B3LYP, PBEh-3c, TPSS/PWPB95), including dispersion effects. Cryptopyrrole-derived oligo-BODIPYs are characterized by a tight intramolecular arrangement triggering a dominant J-type excitonic coupling with red-shifts up to 45 nm, exceptionally small line widths of the absorption and emission event (up to 286 cm-1), outstandingly high attenuation coefficients (up to 1 042 000 M-1 cm-1), and quantum yields of up to unity.

Abstract
Pristine BODIPY compounds have negligible efficiency to generate the excited triplet state and singlet oxygen. In this report, we show that attaching a good electron donor to the BODIPY core can lead to singlet oxygen formation with up to 58 % quantum efficiency. For this purpose, BODIPYs with meso-aryl groups (phenyl, naphthyl, anthryl, and pyrenyl) were synthesized and characterized. The fluorescence, excited triplet state, and singlet oxygen formation properties for these compounds were measured in various solvents by UV/Vis absorption, steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence methods, as well as laser flash photolysis technique. In particular, the presence of anthryl and pyrenyl showed substantial enhancement on the singlet oxygen formation ability of BODIPY with up to 58 % and 34 % quantum efficiency, respectively, owing to their stronger electron-donating ability. Upon the increase in singlet oxygen formation, the fluorescence quantum yield and lifetime values of the aryl-BODIPY showed a concomitant decrease. The increase in solvent polarity enhances the singlet oxygen generation but decreases the fluorescence quantum yield. The results are explained by the presence of intramolecular photoinduced electron transfer from the aryl moiety to BODIPY core. This method of promoting T1 formation is very different from the traditional heavy atom effect by I, Br, or transition metal atoms. This type of novel photosensitizers may find important applications in organic oxygenation reactions and photodynamic therapy of tumors.

Abstract
An asymmetric meso-H dipyrrin featuring a conjugated terminal alkyne substituent was converted to its corresponding difluoro boron complex, and the extent of π-conjugation was extended using Sonogashira cross-coupling. Treatment of the alkyne-substituted dipyrrin with BF3·OEt2 and NEt3 revealed the reactivity of the conjugated terminal alkyne toward Lewis-activated electrophilic substitution and led to the isolation of F-BODIPYs bearing terminal bromovinyl and enol substituents.

Abstract
A novel entry to meso-decorated BODIPY motifs on the basis of an unusual aldol-type addition with diethyl ketomalonate is reported. The evolving β-hydroxyl group can be optionally eliminated, which suppresses the fluorescence of the BODIPY core by attachment of a π-electronically coupled methylidene malonate unit. This unit serves as a versatile, highly electrophilic acceptor platform for various nucleophilic additions. Corresponding products benefit from a fully restored fluorescence.

Abstract
Dioxolene cobalt complexes, [Co(L)(TPA)]PF6 () and [Co(L)(Me3TPA)]PF6 (), were synthesized using a catechol with anthracene and boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY), H2L, and tris(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amine (TPA) or tris[(6-methylpyridin-2-yl)methyl]amine (Me3TPA) and characterised by UV-vis absorption, IR and NMR spectroscopy. Complexes and are a low-spin cobalt(iii) catecholate form and a high-spin cobalt(ii) semiquinonate form, respectively, in CH3CN at room temperature. The effect of the spin states of the dioxolene-cobalt centre on fluorescence was investigated in CH3CN at room temperature. The fluorescence intensity of was clearly lower than that of , although both complexes showed weaker fluorescence compared with that of H2L. The difference in the intensity between and is mainly due to the enhancement of nonradiative decay processes based on the stronger metal-ligand interactions for the cobalt(iii) catecholate form of compared with the cobalt(ii) semiquinonate form of .

Abstract
BODIPY laser dyes constitute a fascinating topic of research in modern photochemistry due to the large variety of options its chromophore offers, which is ready available for a multitude of synthetic routes. Indeed, in the literature one can find a huge battery of compounds based on the indacene core. The possibility of modulating the spectroscopic properties or inducing new photophysical processes by the substitution pattern of the BODIPY dyes has boosted the number of scientific and technological applications for these fluorophores. Along the following lines, I will overview the main results achieved in our laboratory with BODIPYs oriented to optoelectronic as well to biophotonic applications, stressing the more relevant photophysical issues to be considered in the design of a tailor-made BODIPY for a certain application and pointing out some of the remaining challenges.
