Abstract
This paper presents the first example of the formation of acetonyl tridentate CˆNˆN complexes of arylbipyridines in the reaction of chloroplatinum complexes with acetone in the presence of alkali. The chemical structure of obtained substances was established by means of 1H,13C NMR, COSY, HSQC, and HMBC techniques. The attribution of all proton and carbon signals in NMR spectra was performed using 1D and 2D NMR experiments for the synthesized acetonyl cycloplatinated complexes. A comparative analysis of the values of the C-Pt spin-spin coupling constants of the same order was carried out, which showed a significant difference in bond lengths and valence angles inthe cyclic fragments of the arylbipyridine ligand.

Abstract
Precursors PtCl{κ3-N,C,N-[py-C6HMe2-py]} (1), PtCl{κ3-N,C,N-[py-O-C6H3-O-py]} (2), Pt(OH){κ3-N,C,N-[py-C6HMe2-py]} (3), and Pt(OH){κ3-N,C,N-[py-O-C6H3-O-py]} (4) were used to prepare d8-platinum bimetallic complexes. Precursors 1 and 2 react with AgBF4 and 7-azaindole (Haz) to give [Pt{κ3-N,C,N-[py-C6HMe2-py]}{κ1-N-[Haz]}]BF4 (5) and [Pt{κ3-N,C,N-[py-O-C6H3-O-py]}{κ1-N-[Haz]}]BF4 (6) and 3 and 4 with indolo[2,3-b]indole (H2ii) to generate Pt{κ1-N-[Hii]}{κ3-N,C,N-[py-C6HMe2-py]} (7) and Pt{κ1-N-[Hii]}{κ3-N,C,N-[py-O-C6H3-O-py]} (8). Subsequent addition of 3 and 4 to 5-7 affords bimetallic derivatives [{Pt[κ3-N,C,N-(py-C6HMe2-py)]}2{μ-N,N-[az]}]BF4 (9), [{Pt[κ3-N,C,N-(py-O-C6H3-O-py)]}2{μ-N,N-[az]}]BF4 (10), and {Pt[κ3-N,C,N-(py-C6HMe2-py)]}2{μ-N,N-[ii]} (11). X-ray structures of 9-11 reveal separations between the metals in sequence 9 (3.0515(4) Å) < 10 (3.2689(9) Å) < 11 (3.2949(2) Å). DFT calculations support σ overlap of the dz2 orbitals of platinum atoms, for 9 and 10. Accordingly, their absorption spectra show a MMLCT transition. Complex 9 is a red emitter. The excited state has 3MMLCT characteristics and a Pt-Pt separation of 2.763 Å. Complex 11 is a dual emitter in the red and NIR regions, in solid. Both excited states have a 3LC/LMCT characteristic and platinum-platinum separations of 3.290 and 3.202 Å. Intermediate 5 is a green emitter that achieves quantum yields close to unity, when diluted in PMMA and 1,2-dichloroethane at low concentrations.

Abstract
A series of luminescent binuclear ([dppm{Pt(NNC)}2]2+) and mononuclear ([PPh3Pt(NNC)]+) complexes containing pincer ligands were synthesized and characterized. Photophysical characteristics of both types of complexes were studied in dichloromethane solution. In the solid phase, the binuclear compounds adopt a syn configuration where the {Pt(NNC)} fragments are held together due to intramolecular Pt-Pt bonding and π-stacking of the pincer ligand aromatic systems. Analysis of the complexes' molecular structure in solution by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy showed that the stacked intramolecular configuration is retained in fluid media, which is in complete agreement with a considerable red shift of the emission wavelength due to formation of the intramolecular Pt-Pt bond, leading to the transformation of an emissive excited state to 3MMLCT. It was also found that triethylamine quenches the emission of both types of complexes; the mechanism of quenching is a combination of dynamic and static channels of excited-state deactivation. In the case of binuclear complexes, deprotonation of the dppm methylene bridge by triethylamine also contributes to the chromophore quenching. To explain the observed chemistry of binuclear complex interactions with Et3N, a chemical equilibrium scheme was suggested, which was confirmed by quantitative monitoring of the 31P signal variations as a function of triethylamine concentration.

Abstract
The synthesis, structure, and luminescence of Pt(II) complexes of the type [Pt(N∧C∧C)(L)] are reported, where N∧C∧C is a terdentate ligand resulting from the cycloplatination of 2-(3,5-diphenoxyphenyl)pyridine or 2-(4,4″-dimethyl-[1,1':3',1″-terphenyl]-5'-yl)pyridine, and L represents a monodentate ancillary ligand, which can be γ-picoline, 4-pyridinecarboxaldehyde, PPh3, n-butyl or 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide, CO, or the N-heterocyclic carbenes 1-butyl-3-methylimidazol-2-ylidene or 4-butyl-3-methyl-1-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene. Derivatives bearing CO, isocyanides, or carbenes showed the highest stabilities in solution, whereas the pyridine and PPh3 derivatives establish ligand-exchange equilibria in acetonitrile. Different supramolecular structures are observed in the solid state, which largely depend on the nature of the ancillary ligand. Isocyanides and CO favor π interactions between the aromatic rings, metallophilic Pt···Pt contacts, or a combination of both. In contrast, pyridine ligands may lead to bimolecular assemblies driven by C-H···O, C-H···Pt, or C-H/π hydrogen bonds. Luminescence was examined in fluid solution, poly(methyl methacrylate) matrices, and the solid state at 298 K, and in 2-methyltetrahydrofuran glasses at 77 K. The majority of derivatives show highly efficient emissions from 3ILCT/MLCT or 3ILCT/MLCT/LLCT excited states of monomeric species. The formation of excimers and different types of emissive aggregates are demonstrated, which lead to red-shifted emissions of different origins and characteristics depending on the involved noncovalent interactions.

Abstract
Photochemical cycloplatinations of 2-arylpyridines and related C∧N ligands, as well as terdentate heteroaromatic N∧N∧C, N∧C∧N, and N∧C∧C compounds, are demonstrated using (Bu4N)2[Pt2Cl6] or [PtCl2(NCPh)2] as precursors at room temperature. Mono- or bis-cyclometalated Pt(II) complexes with C∧N ligands are obtained depending on excitation wavelength and precursor. Monitoring experiments show that photoexcitation enables both the N-coordination and the subsequent C-H metalation. Photochemical synthetic protocols have been developed, which are advantageous with respect to the established thermal procedures and have allowed the synthesis of the first Pt(II) complexes with N∧C∧C ligands.

Abstract
Square-planar PtII complexes are of interest as dopants for the emissive layer of organic light-emitting diodes. Herein, the photophysics of three Pt bipyridyl complexes with the strongly e- withdrawing, high-field, 3,3,3-trifluoropropynyl ligand has been investigated. One complex, (phbpy)PtC2CF3 (phbpy = 6-phenyl-2,2'-dipyridyl), has also been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. All complexes reported are emissive in both RT CH2Cl2 solution (ΦPL = 0.007 to 0.027) and PMMA film (ΦPL = 0.25 to 0.42). The trifluoropropynyl ligand elevates the energy of the MLCT and LL'CT states above that of the IL π-π* state, resulting in IL emission in all cases. The emission energies of the trifluoropropynyl compounds are also blue-shifted relative to the analogous pentafluorophenylethynyl compounds, suggesting that the trifluoropropynyl ligand is one of the most electron-withdrawing alkynyl ligands. Rate constants for radiative and nonradiative deactivation were determined from experimentally determined values of ΦPL and excited-state lifetimes in both solution and PMMA films. The increase in ΦPL upon incorporation into PMMA film (rigidoluminescence) results from a decrease in the rate constant for non-radiative relaxation. Experimental activation energies for excited-state decay in combination with TDDFT are consistent with the rigidoluminescence resulting from an increase in the energy of the non-emissive triplet metal-centered state. Two of the complexes investigated, (Ph2bpy)Pt(C2CF3)2 and (t-Bu2bpy)Pt(C2CF3)2, where t-Bu2bpy = 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-dipyridyl and Ph2bpy = 4,4'-diphenyl-2,2'-dipyridyl, exhibit concentration-dependent excimer emission (orange) along with monomer emission (blue), enabling fine-tuning of the emission color. However, excimer emission was absent in cured PMMA films up to the solubility limit for solution processing of (Ph2bpy)Pt(C2CF3)2 in CH2Cl2, demonstrating the diffusional nature of excimer formation.

Abstract
A series of heteroleptic cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes, [Pt(C^N)(O^O)], (1-10) with various donors and acceptors has been synthesized and characterized by 1 H NMR spectroscopy, elemental analyses, infrared spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The X-ray structure of 2 has also been determined. The electrochemical and photophysical properties of the platinum(II) complexes were studied. These experimental results have been supported by computational studies. Furthermore, two of the complexes have been employed as the active material in the fabrication of resistive memory devices, exhibiting stable binary memory performance with low operating voltage, high ON/OFF ratio and long retention time.

Abstract
Quantifying vibronic couplings in molecular excited states is crucial for the elucidation of a broad range of photophysical phenomena. In this study, we compare different theoretical approaches for the calculation of reorganization energy, a measure of vibronic coupling strength, and provide a rigorous derivation to show that molecular transition density characterizing electron-hole excitation could be used to quantify the magnitude of reorganization energy. The theory enables a descriptor based on molecular-orbital coefficients and atomic transition densities to quantify the magnitude of reorganization energies in molecular excited states. Applying the approach to low-lying excited states of polyacenes, we demonstrate that transition density distribution explains the difference in the magnitude of the reorganization energy of different excited states. Furthermore, to clarify the applicability of the transition density descriptor in molecular design for small-reorganization energy molecules, we investigate a broad range of molecular chromophores to show the effectiveness of the proposed theory. With this perspective on the relationship between reorganization energy and transition density, we successfully provide a quantitative rule to identify π-conjugated systems with small reorganization energy in the excited state, which should be useful for the development of novel optoelectronic materials.

Abstract
Phosphorescent organometallic compounds based on heavy transition metal complexes (TMCs) are an appealing research topic of enormous current interest. Amongst all different fields in which they found valuable application, development of emitting materials based on TMCs have become crucial for electroluminescent devices such as phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs) and light-emitting electrochemical cells (LEECs). This interest is driven by the fact that luminescent TMCs with long-lived excited state lifetimes are able to efficiently harvest both singlet and triplet electro-generated excitons, thus opening the possibility to achieve theoretically 100% internal quantum efficiency in such devices. In the recent past, various classes of compounds have been reported, possessing a beautiful structural variety that allowed to nicely obtain efficient photo- and electroluminescence with high colour purity in the red, green and blue (RGB) portions of the visible spectrum. In addition, achievement of efficient emission beyond such range towards ultraviolet (UV) and near infrared (NIR) regions was also challenged. By employing TMCs as triplet emitters in OLEDs, remarkably high device performances were demonstrated, with square planar platinum(II) complexes bearing π-conjugated chromophoric ligands playing a key role in such respect. In this contribution, the most recent and promising trends in the field of phosphorescent platinum complexes will be reviewed and discussed. In particular, the importance of proper molecular design that underpins the successful achievement of improved photophysical features and enhanced device performances will be highlighted. Special emphasis will be devoted to those recent systems that have been employed as triplet emitters in efficient PhOLEDs.

Abstract
Cyclometalated Pt(II) complexes can show intense phosphorescence at room temperature. Their emission properties are determined by both the organic ligand and the metal center. Whereas most of the related studies focus on tuning the properties by designing different types of organic ligands, only several reports investigate the key role played by the metal center. To address this issue, phosphorescent Pt(II) complexes with one, two, and three Pt(II) centers are designed and synthesized. With more Pt(II) centers, the cyclometalated multinuclear Pt(II) complexes display red-shifted emissions with increased photoluminescence quantum yields. Most importantly, solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with the conventional device structure using the multinuclear Pt(II) complexes as emitters show excellent performance. The controlled device based on the conventional mononuclear Pt(II) complex shows a peak external quantum efficiency, current efficiency, and power efficiency of 6.4%, 14.4 cd A-1, and 12.1 lm W-1, respectively. The efficiencies are dramatically improved to 10.5%, 21.4 cd A-1, and 12.9 lm W-1 for the OLED based on the dinuclear Pt(II) complex and to 17.0%, 35.4 cd A-1, and 27.2 lm W-1 for the OLED based on the trinuclear Pt(II) complex, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, these efficiencies are among the highest ever reported for the multinuclear Pt(II) complex-based OLEDs.

Abstract
The reaction of N-ortho-chlorophenyl-substituted acetylpyridine hydrazones (a and d) with K2[PtCl4] (n-butanol/water, 100 °C) gave mononuclear complexes 1a and 1d with the ligands as [N,N] bidentate. In contrast, the reaction of N-phenyl or N-meta-chlorophenyl hydrazones (b and c, respectively) under analogous reaction conditions gave the cycloplatinated species 2b and 2c with the ligand as [C,N,N] terdentate. The treatment of the mononuclear complexes 1a and 1d with NaOAc (n-butanol, 100 °C) gave the corresponding cycloplatinated complexes 2a and 2d. Acetophenone hydrazone platinacycle 2e was prepared in a similar fashion and its reaction with tertiary mono- and triphosphines gave mono- or trinuclear species depending on the reaction conditions. The X-ray crystal structures of some of these complexes showed interesting π-π slipped stacking interactions between metallacyclic rings which, according to NCI analyses, showed an aromatic character. With an aim to rationalize the different reactivities shown by acetylpyridine hydrazones and the precise role of the acetate anion, the energy profiles for the three main steps of cycloplatination (iminoplatinum complex formation, chelation and cyclometallation) have been determined by using the DFT (M06) methods. Calculations indicate that the cycloplatination of 1b proceeds via electrophilic substitution, involving the direct replacement of the chloride anion at the Pt(ii) centre with the N-phenyl moiety as the rate-determining step, to give an agostic intermediate 5b+ that, subsequently, leads to the elimination of a proton as hydrogen chloride. When present as an "external" base, acetate enters the coordination sphere around the Pt(ii) centre and facilitates hydrazone N-H deprotonation and electrophilic C-H activation through a dissociative route, leading to a Wheland-type σ-complex intermediate 9ac.

Abstract
Abstract
Herein we show that cyclometalated, square planar Pt(II) complexes can be tuned to achieve deep-blue phosphorescent emitters. For this purpose, the introduction of an electron-donating moiety on two different bidentate NˆN and NˆO fluorine-free luminophores, namely 2-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyridine and picolinic acid, was carried out. The remaining two coordination sites of the Pt(II) metal center were filled by a sterically demanding cyclometallating unit, namely a tertiary phosphite CˆP ligand. This ancillary ligand avoids aggregation and provides high solubility in organic solvents. Based on this approach, we were able to blue-shift the emission of the complexes down to 411 nm, and to achieve a maximal photoluminescence quantum yield of 56% in the solid state.

Abstract
In recent years a blossoming interest in the synthesis, photophysics and application of phosphorescent Pt(ii) complexes, particularly on their uses in bioimaging, photocatalysis and phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), has been witnessed. The superior performance of phosphorescent Pt(ii) complexes in these applications is linked to their diverse spectroscopic and photophysical properties, which can be systematically modulated by appropriate choices of auxiliary ligands. Meanwhile, an important criterion for the practical application of phosphorescent metal complexes is their stability which is crucial for biological utilization and industrial OLED applications. Taking both the luminescence properties and stability into consideration, chelating ligands having rigid scaffolds and with strong σ-donor atoms are advantageous for the construction of highly robust phosphorescent Pt(ii) complexes. The square-planar coordination geometry endows Pt(ii) complexes with the intriguing spectroscopic and photophysical properties associated with their intermolecular interactions in both the ground and excited states. In this article, we discuss the design and synthesis of phosphorescent Pt(ii) complexes with elaboration on the effects of ligands on the structure and luminescence properties. Based on their photophysical and emission properties, we intend to shed light on the great promise of highly robust phosphorescent Pt(ii) emitters in an array of applications from molecular materials to biosensors.

Abstract
We report the first examples of highly luminescent di-coordinated Pd(0) complexes. Five complexes of the form [Pd(L)(L')] were synthesized, where L = IPr, SIPr or IPr* NHC ligands and L' = PCy3, or IPr and SIPr NHC ligands. The photophysical properties of these complexes were determined in degassed toluene solution and in the solid state and contrasted to the poorly luminescent reference complex [Pd(IPr)(PPh3)]. Organic light-emitting diodes were successfully fabricated but attained external quantum efficiencies of between 0.3 and 0.7%.

Abstract
Luminescent pincer-type Pt(II) complexes supported by C-deprotonated π-extended tridentate RC^N^NR' ligands and pentafluorophenylacetylide ligands show emission quantum yields up to almost unity. Femtosecond time-resolved fluorescence measurements and time-dependent DFT calculations together reveal the dependence of excited-state structural distortions of [Pt(RC^N^NR')(CC-C6 F5 )] on the positional isomers of the tridentate ligand. Pt complexes [Pt(R-C^N^NR')(CC-Ar)] are efficient photocatalysts for visible-light-induced reductive CC bond formation. The [Pt(R-C^N^NR')(CC-C6 F5 )] complexes perform strongly as phosphorescent dopants for green- and red-emitting organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with external quantum efficiency values over 22.1 %. These complexes are also applied in two-photon cellular imaging when incorporated into mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs).

Abstract
New square-planar complexes [Pt(1(-H))2] (2a) [1(-H) = (oxazolin-2-yl)bis(diphenylphosphino)methanide] and [Pd(1(-H))2] (2b), of general formula [M{(Ph2P)2C---C---NCH2CH2O}2] (M = Pt, 2a; M = Pd, 2b), result from deprotonation of 2-{bis(diphenylphosphino)methyl}oxazoline (1) at the PCHP site. The new, functionalized dppm-type ligand 4-{bis(diphenylphosphino)methyl}pyridine, (Ph2P)2CH(4-C5H4N) (4), was prepared by double lithiation and phosphorylation of 4-picoline. In the presence of NEt3, the reactions of 2 equiv of 4 with [PtCl2(NCPh)2] and [Pd(acac)2] (acac = acetylacetonate) afforded [Pt(4(-H))2] (5a) [4(-H) = bis(diphenylphosphino)(pyridin-4-yl)methanide] and [Pd(4(-H))2] (5b), of general formula [M{(Ph2P)2C(4-C5H4N)}2] (M = Pt, 5a; M = Pd, 5b), respectively. In the absence of base, the reactions of 2 equiv of 4 with [PtCl2(NCPh)2] and [PdCl2(NCPh)2] afforded (5a·2HCl) (6a) and (5b·2HCl) (6b), respectively, in which the PCHP proton of 4 has migrated from carbon to nitrogen to give a pyridinium derivative of general formula [M{(Ph2P)2C(4-C5H4NH)}2]Cl2 (M = Pt, 6a; M = Pd, 6b). The complexes 3a, 5a·2MeOH, and 6b·4CH2Cl2 have been structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. The absorption/emission properties of the Pt(II) complexes 2a and 5a and the Pd(II) complexes 2b and 5b have been investigated by UV-vis spectroscopy and theoretical analysis based on density functional theory. The UV-vis absorption spectra of the neutral complexes recorded in dilute N,N'-dimethylformamide solutions are dominated by intense spin-allowed intraligand transitions in the region below 350 nm. The complexes exhibit charge-transfer bands between 350 and 500 nm. The experimental and theoretical absorption spectra agree qualitatively and point to two low-lying ligand-to-metal charge transfer states that contribute to the bands observed between 350 and 500 nm. The complexes are emissive in frozen solutions at 77 K, in the pure solid state, and when doped into films of poly(methyl methacrylate) but are nonemissive in solution. A red shift is observed when Pt(II) is replaced by Pd(II).

Abstract
We report the synthesis of a new class of thermally stable and strongly luminescent cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes 1-6, which contain the 2-acetylbenzo[b]thiophene-3-olate (bt) ligand, and their application in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). These heteroleptic iridium(III) complexes with bt as the ancillary ligand have a decomposition temperature that is 10-20 % higher and lower emission self-quenching constants than those of their corresponding complexes with acetylacetonate (acac). The luminescent color of these iridium(III) complexes could be fine-tuned from orange (e.g., 2-phenyl-6-(trifluoromethyl)benzo[d]thiazole (cf3 bta) for 4) to pure red (e.g., lpt (Hlpt=4-methyl-2-(thiophen-2-yl)quinolone) for 6) by varying the cyclometalating ligands (C-deprotonated C^N). In particular, highly efficient OLEDs based on 6 as dopant (emitter) and 1,3-bis(carbazol-9-yl)benzene (mCP) as host that exhibit stable red emission over a wide range of brightness with CIE chromaticity coordinates of (0.67, 0.33) well matched to the National Television System Committee (NTSC) standard have been fabricated along with an external quantum efficiency (EQE) and current efficiency of 9 % and 10 cd A(-1) , respectively. A further 50 % increase in EQE (>13 %) by replacing mCP with bis[4-(6H-indolo[2,3-b]quinoxalin-6-yl)phenyl]diphenylsilane (BIQS) as host for 6 in the red OLED is demonstrated. The performance of OLEDs fabricated with 6 (i.e., [(lpt)2Ir(bt)]) was comparable to that of the analogous iridium(III) complex that bore acac (i.e., [(lpt)2 Ir(acac)]; 6a in this work) [Adv. Mater.- 2011, 23, 2981] fabricated under similar conditions. By using ntt (Hnnt=3-hydroxynaphtho[2,3-b]thiophen-2-yl)(thiophen-2-yl)methanone) ligand, a substituted derivative of bt, the [(cf3bta)2Ir(ntt)] was prepared and found to display deep red emission at around 700 nm with a quantum yield of 12 % in mCP thin film.
