Abstract
Metal-containing clusters have attracted increasing attention over the past 2-3 decades. This intense interest can be attributed to the fact that these discrete metal aggregates, whose atomically precise structures are resolved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), often possess intriguing geometrical features (high symmetry, aesthetically pleasing shapes and architectures) and fascinating physical properties, providing invaluable opportunities for the intersection of different disciplines including chemistry, physics, mathematical geometry and materials science. In this review, we attempt to reinterpret and connect these fascinating clusters from the perspective of Platonic and Archimedean solid characteristics, focusing on highly symmetrical and complex metal-containing (metal = Al, Ti, V, Mo, W, U, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag, Au, lanthanoids (Ln), and actinoids) high-nuclearity clusters, including metal-oxo/hydroxide/chalcogenide clusters and metal clusters (with metal-metal binding) protected by surface organic ligands, such as thiolate, phosphine, alkynyl, carbonyl and nitrogen/oxygen donor ligands. Furthermore, we present the symmetrical beauty of metal cluster structures and the geometrical similarity of different types of clusters and provide a large number of examples to show how to accurately describe the metal clusters from the perspective of highly symmetrical polyhedra. Finally, knowledge and further insights into the design and synthesis of unknown metal clusters are put forward by summarizing these "star" molecules.

Abstract
Controlled protein assembly provides a means to generate biomaterials. Synthetic macrocycles such as the water-soluble sulfonato-calix[n]arenes are useful mediators of protein assembly. Sulfonato-thiacalix[4]arene (tsclx 4 ), with its metal-binding capacity, affords the potential for simultaneous macrocycle- and metal-mediated protein assembly. Here, we describe the tsclx 4 -/Zn-directed assembly of two proteins: cationic α-helical cytochrome c (cyt c) and neutral β-propeller Ralstonia solanacearum lectin (RSL). Two co-crystal forms were obtained with cyt c, each involving multinuclear zinc sites supported by the cone conformation of tsclx 4 . The tsclx 4 /Zn cluster acted as an assembly node via both lysine encapsulation and metal-mediated protein-protein contacts. In the case of RSL, tsclx 4 adopted the 1,2-alternate conformation and supported a dinuclear zinc site with concomitant encapsulation and metal-binding of two histidine side chains. These results, together with the knowledge of thiacalixarene/metal nanoclusters, suggest promising applications for thiacalixarenes in biomaterials and MOF fabrication.

Abstract
The syntheses and properties of expanded 4-tert-butyl-mercaptocalix[4]arenes, in which the methylene linkers are replaced by -CH2 NRCH2 - or -CH2 NRCH2 - and -CH2 NRCH2 CH2 CH2 NRCH2 - units, are described. The new macrocycles were obtained in a step-wise manner, utilizing fully protected, i. e. S-alkylated, derivatives of the oxidation-sensitive thiophenols in the cyclisation steps. Reductive cleavage of the macrobicyclic or macrotricyclic intermediates (6, 7, 11) afforded the free thiophenols (H4 8, H4 9, and H4 12) in preparative yields as their hydrochloride salts. The protected proligands can exist in two conformations, resembling the "cone" and "1,3-alternate" conformations found for the parent calix[4]arenes. The free macrocycles do not show conformational isomerism, but are readily oxidized forming intramolecular disulfide linkages. Preliminary complexation experiments show that these expanded mercaptocalixarenes can serve as supporting ligands for tetranuclear thiolato clusters.

Abstract
Thiacalix[4]arene with four sulfur-bridging atoms and four hydroxy coordinating groups in the lower rim is a promising candidate for powerful electrocatalytic hydrogen production. However, there are only a few examples reported in the literature where conjugated thiacalix[4]arene is used as a pre-catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction. The present work evaluates the electrocatalytic performance of a nickel(II) coordination complex based on generic thiacalix[4]arene. The coordination complex is characterized by cyclic voltammetry, where two reduction peaks are observed at −0.57 and −1.33 V for the two redox couples Ni2+/Ni+ and Ni+/Ni, respectively. The proton reduction occurs at the second peak potential with a slight shift at about −1.0 V, with increasing peak currents directly related to the number of acetic acid equivalents. The maximum peak current was observed to be at about 67 µA for 20 equiv. of acetic acid.

Abstract
Two isomers of the calixarene-based cobalt complex [Co4Cl(TC4A)(BCPT)2]− (H4TC4A = p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene; H2BCPT = 3,5-bis (4′-carboxy-phenyl)-1,2,4-triazole) were obtained under the solvothermal conditions with tetramethylammonium/tetraethylammonium hydroxide (CIAC-236) and triethylamine (CIAC-237). Single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that CIAC-236 has a 1D zigzag aggregate constructed by bridging the shuttlecock-like Co4–TC4A secondary building units (SBUs) with two pairs of opposite V-shaped BCPT ligands while CIAC-237 possesses a 2D layer assembly with each Co4–TC4A SBU bonded by four BCPT ligands in a same direction (clockwise or counterclockwise), which indicates that different shapes of the organoamines lead to different assembly of the BCPT ligands and the formation of different extended aggregates. For comparison, only the 1D structure ([Fe4Cl(TC4A)](BCPT)2]−, CIAC-238) was obtained for the iron complexes with all these three organoamines, which would be attributed to different property and coordination of iron element. Magnetic properties of all these three compounds were studied. Two isomers of the calixarene-based cobalt complex, 1D aggregate and 2D network, were obtained with different organoamine templates.![]()

Abstract
In this review, aspects of the syntheses, structures and magnetic properties of giant 3d and 3d/4f paramagnetic metal clusters in moderate oxidation states are discussed. The term "giant clusters" is used herein to denote metal clusters with nuclearity of 30 or greater. Many synthetic strategies towards such species have been developed and are discussed in this paper. Attempts are made to categorize some of the most successful methods to giant clusters, but it will be pointed out that the characteristics of the crystal structures of such compounds including nuclearity, shape, architecture, etc. are unpredictable depending on the specific structural features of the included organic ligands, reaction conditions and other factors. The majority of the described compounds in this review are of special interest not only for their fascinating nanosized structures but also because they sometimes display interesting magnetic phenomena, such as ferromagnetic exchange interactions, large ground state spin values, single-molecule magnetism behaviour or impressively large magnetocaloric effects. In addition, they often possess the properties of both the quantum and the classical world, and thus their systematic study offers the potential for the discovery of new physical phenomena, as well as a better understanding of the existing ones. The research field of giant clusters is under continuous evolution and their intriguing structural characteristics and magnetism properties that attract the interest of synthetic Inorganic Chemists promise a brilliant future for this class of compounds.

Abstract
Reaction of uranyl nitrate with 1,3,5-benzenetriacetic acid (H3BTA) in the presence of additional species, either organic bases or their conjugate acids or metal cations, has provided 12 new crystalline complexes, all but one obtained under solvo-hydrothermal conditions. The complexes [C(NH2)3][UO2(BTA)]·H2O (1) and [H2NMe2][UO2(BTA)] (2) crystallize as one- or two-dimensional (1D or 2D) assemblies, respectively, both with uranyl tris-chelation by carboxylate groups and hydrogen-bonded counterions but different ligand conformations. One of the bound carboxylate units is replaced by chelating 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) or 3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (Me4phen) in the complexes [(UO2)3(BTA)2(phen)3]·4H2O (3) and [(UO2)3(BTA)2(Me4phen)3]·NMP·3H2O (4) (NMP = N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone), which are a 2D network with honeycomb topology and a 1D polymer, respectively. With silver(I) cations, [UO2Ag(BTA)] (5), a three-dimensional (3D) framework in which the ligand assumes various chelating/bridging coordination modes, and the aromatic ring is involved in Ag(I) bonding, is obtained. A series of seven heterometallic complexes results when lead(II) cations and N-chelating molecules are both present. The complexes [UO2Pb(BTA)(NO3)(bipy)] (6) and [UO2Pb2(BTA)2(bipy)2]·3H2O (7), where bipy is 2,2'-bipyridine, crystallize from the one solution, as 1D and 2D assemblies, respectively. The two 1D coordination polymers [UO2Pb(BTA)(HCOO)(phen)] (8 and 9), again obtained from the one synthesis, provide an example of coordination isomerism, with the formate anion bound either to lead(II) or to uranyl cations. Another 2D architecture is found in [(UO2)2Pb2(BTA)2(HBTA)(H2O)2(phen)2]·2H2O (10), which provides a possible example of a Pb-oxo(uranyl) "cation-cation" interaction. While [UO2Pb(BTA)(HCOO)0.5(NO3)0.5(Me2phen)] (11), where Me2phen is 5,6-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline, is a 1D assembly close to those in 6 and 8, [UO2Pb2(BTA)2(Me4phen)2] (12), obtained together with complex 4, crystallizes as a 2D network as a result of the high degree of connectivity provided by the chelating/bridging tricarboxylate ligand. Emission spectra measured in the solid state display vibronic fine structure attributable to uranyl luminescence (except for complex 5, in which emission is quenched), with variations in maxima positions associated with modifications of the uranyl ion environment.

Abstract
Three thiacalix[4]arene polynuclear complexes have been prepared by literature methods for detailed magnetic investigation. The [Fe3O(L)2] (LH4 = thiacalix[4]arene) complex is found to exhibit interesting anti-ferromagnetic exchange coupling. Jahn–Teller distortion in [Cu4(L)2] complex leads to strong anti-ferromagnetic coupling at low temperatures. The temperature-dependent susceptibility of the [(μ-H2O)Eu2(LH)2(DMF)4] complex is well described by a ground state involving the thermal population of the lowest three excited states.

Abstract
Three new organic tectons (2–4) based on the p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene backbone, blocked in the 1,3-alternate conformation, bearing four pyridyl coordinating moieties, have been synthesised and characterised in the solid state. The ligands are positional isomers and differ by the position of the N atom on the pyridyl unit (ortho for 2, meta for 3 and para for 4). Their combination with the Ag+ cation leads, reproducibly, to the formation of 2- and 3-D infinite silver coordination networks. Independent of the nature of the anion, the combination of 2 offering four (N,S) type chelates with the Ag+ cation affords an unprecedented diamond type 3D network. Both 3 and 4, behaving as tetrakis monodentate ligands, lead to the formation of 2-D architectures.

Abstract
A new strategy for the design of container molecules is presented. Sulfonylcalix[4]arenes, which are synthetic macrocyclic containers, are used as building blocks that are combined with various metal ions and tricarboxylate ligands to construct metal-organic "supercontainers" (MOSCs). These MOSCs possess both endo and exo cavities and thus mimic the structure of viruses. The synthesis of MOSCs is highly modular, robust, and predictable. The unique features of MOSCs are expected to provide exciting new opportunities for the exploration of their functional applications.
