Abstract
The adsorption behaviour of caffeine and theophylline under hydrophilic interaction chromatography and purely aqueous conditions was investigated on four phosphodiester stationary phases. Solute adsorption isotherms were determined by frontal analysis or inverse method. The bi-Langmuir model was found to be the best choice to describe the behaviour of caffeine and theophylline adsorption in purely aqueous conditions, whereas the bi-Moreau model describes the adsorption phenomena in HILIC conditions. The results obtained demonstrate that the interaction of caffeine and theophylline with the stationary phase surface varies depending on the mobile phase composition. Both in pure aqueous mobile phase and in HILIC mode, the heterogeneity of the surface of the studied stationary phases is confirmed. In hydrophilic solutions, the sample molecules interact with the stationary phase only. In hydrophobic conditions, a lateral interaction occurs between caffeine or theophylline molecules, which are poorly soluble in acetonitrile-rich solvents. This confirms that the same compound on the same stationary phase can behave rather differently, depending on the mobile phase composition. Thus, the mobile phase may govern and control the retention mechanism.

Abstract
Polymer modified silica materials are widely used as stationary phases in hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC), whereas a stationary phase with excellent performance is highly desired. In this study, vinyl modified silica was first synthesized through a silane coupling reaction, and then a polyacrylamide modified silica (PAM-SIL) stationary phase was successfully prepared using acrylamide as a copolymer monomer via free radical polymerization. The retention behaviors of polar analytes on the stationary phase under various chromatographic conditions, including acetonitrile content, buffer concentration and pH values were investigated, and a typical hydrophilic interaction retention mechanism was inferred. Exceptionally, the separation performance of the stationary phases could be regulated by controlling the polymer structure. Model analytes separated rapidly on the stationary phase which has an optimal grafting amount of vinyl, with the highest number of theoretical plates of orotic acid reaching 119,966/m. While the stationary phases with high acrylamide concentrations exhibited enhanced retention behavior and higher resolution for analytes. The adjustable separation performance will have huge potential in future separation and analysis applications.

Abstract
Beta-blockers are a class of medications predominantly used to manage abnormal heart rhythms. They are also widely used to treat high blood pressure. From the liquid chromatography separation point of view, beta-blockers are interesting molecules due to their hydrophobic-hydrophilic properties. Thus, the study aimed to investigate the beta-blocker separation selectivity on four phosphodiester stationary phases in reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RP LC) and hydrophilic interactions liquid chromatography (HILIC). On tested stationary phases, beta-blockers provide retention in both chromatographic systems, RP LC and HILIC. Additionally, it was found that cation-exchange mechanisms have a significant contribution to retention. Separations were enhanced by applying ChromSword software for gradient optimization and Intelligent Peak Deconvolution Analysis to separate unseparated peaks digitally.

Abstract
A facile, controllable and environmentally friendly method for fabricating a novel polysaccharide-silica composite stationary phase (SiO2@(HA-CS)12) was developed in this report. Two natural polysaccharides (hyaluronan acid and chitosan) were controllably coated on the silica surface using a layer-by-layer assembly technique, and then the polysaccharide shell was chemically cross-linked to improve the stability. The column efficiency of the SiO2@(HA-CS)12 column reached 74 000 plates per m in HILIC mode and 20 100 plates per m in IEC mode, which indicates great potential for separating polar and charged samples.

Abstract
In this work, the conventional reactions were used to functionalize the silica surface with amide and hydrocarbon chain groups affording two different mixed-mode stationary phases (Sil-amide-C11 and Sil-C12-amide). The prepared stationary phases were analyzed by elemental analysis and thermogravimetric analysis. The retention of benzene, phenol, pyridine, and aniline was investigated and compared with synthesized and commercial columns, and this led to prove the existence of different interactions on the synthesized stationary phases. The mixed-mode stationary phases showed multiple interactions, and different chromatography modes were found under distinct chromatographic conditions. According to the type of amide group (either free or within the hydrocarbon chain), different interactions can be made on the columns. The alkylbenzenes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, as nonpolar hydrocarbons, were chromatographed under reversed-phase liquid chromatography modes, in which amide groups on the silica could efficiently separate polar analytes under hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography mode in both prepared stationary phases. The performance of the columns was compared by the separation of the carboxylic acid group and biological samples. The bonding method and the type of amide group showed different interactions leading to different separation and performance.

Abstract
Many efforts have been made to separate basic compounds, which are challenging to resolve in reversed phase liquid chromatography. In this process, they are strongly retained and the peak shape undergoes significant distortion. The principal origin of this has been identified with the non-negligible interaction with residual deprotonated silanols. Consequently, all solutions that efficiently shield silanols are being sought. This review is an upgrade on the use of the electrostatic repulsion reversed phase (ERRP) approach: retention of bases, in protonated form, can be achieved by modulating the charge repulsion caused by the presence of positive charges in the chromatographic system. This study successfully (i) introduced fixed positive charges in the structure of stationary phases, (ii) used cationic and hydrophobic additives in the mobile phase, and (iii) used the ERRP-like approach employed at the preparative level for peptide purification.

Abstract
In this research, 9-methylacridine and 9-undecylacridine were synthesized through Bernthsen's reaction and well characterized using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Two mixed-mode stationary phases were developed by functionalizing silica with 9-methylacridine and 9-undecylacridine. Then, two modified silicas were characterized by elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Due to the extent of conjugative rings, the hydrophobic hydrocarbon chain, and anion exchange sites of 9-methylacridinium and 9-undecylacridinium group on the silica gel of columns, mixed-mode stationary phases were designed with multiple interactions including π-π stacking interaction, reverse phase, hydrophilic interaction, and anion exchange. According to the type of acridine, different interactions may be formed in the target column. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), alkylbenzenes, pyridines and parabens were chromatographed on π-π stacking modes and RPLC, where anion exchange sites can be applied for the separation of inorganic anions on AEC mode. Considering the structure of the stationary phases, these columns were used to separate organic compounds with higher polarity on the HILIC retention. The performance of the columns was investigated by the chromatographic parameters in terms of column efficiency (N/m), asymmetry factor (Af), retention factor (k), and resolution (Rs). The mixed-mode stationary phases can be successfully employed to conduct chromatographic separation on a wide range of samples with a single column.

Abstract
A new strategy for the preparation of mixed-mode chromatographic stationary phases based on modified dialdehyde cellulose was proposed. Two novel mixed-mode chromatographic stationary phases, dicarboxyl cellulose-modified silica (DCC/SiO2) and (S)-α-phenylethylamine-bonded DCC/SiO2 ((S)-α-PEA/DCC/SiO2), were prepared by utilizing the easy functionalization characteristics of dialdehyde cellulose. The chromatographic evaluation showed that DCC/SiO2 column could be used in hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) and ion exchange chromatography (IEC) modes, (S)-α-PEA/DCC/SiO2 column could be used in HILIC, IEC and chiral separation modes. The DCC/SiO2 column and (S)-α-PEA/DCC/SiO2 column exhibited excellent chromatographic performance by separating strongly polar compounds, phenylamines and chiral compounds in the above separation modes. The preparation method of modified dialdehyde cellulose-based mixed-mode chromatographic stationary phases was simple, and also provided a new idea for the development of the subsequent novel mixed-mode chromatographic stationary phases.

Abstract
Alkaloids are important natural products that exhibit a wide spectrum of pharmacological activities. To efficiently separate and purify them, a rosin-based polymer-bonded silica stationary phase in high-performance liquid chromatography was synthesized via the surface radical polymerization of ethylene glycol maleic rosinate acrylate and methacrylic acid onto functionalized silica. The stationary phases, columns, optimization of chromatographic conditions for alkaloids, and thermodynamic behavior of the analytes on the column were fully studied. Under the optimized conditions, the prepared column efficiently purified natural camptothecine, caffeine, and evodiamine with the corresponding purities of 92, 96, and 97%. With this work, we have developed an efficient approach to isolate alkaloids and promoted the research on rosin-based materials in biomedicine and analytical chemistry.

Preparation and evaluation of maltose modified polymer-silica composite based on cross-linked poly glycidyl methacrylate as high performance liquid chromatography stationary phase. Abstract
A new maltose modified polymer-silica composite was fabricated and applied as high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) stationary phase. The cross-linked poly glycidyl methacrylate (pGMA) layer was chemically bonded to the outer surface as well as pore inner surface of silica beads via in-situ polymerization, and then maltose was modified onto the polymer layer via a [3 + 2] "click" reaction. The porous spherical silica (4 μm diameter) with 300 Å pore size was selected as the matrix so that the 3.25 nm-thick polymer layer fabricated on the pore inner surface would not affect its permeability. The typical 'U-shape' retention curves indicated a mixed-mode retention mechanism of the as-synthesized stationary phase. Both polar and non-polar analytes could be well separated on the stationary phase with column efficiency reaching 123809 plates/m for guanosine in hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) mode and 46808 plates/m for fluorene in reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC) mode, respectively. Nucleotides and their bases were baseline separated with good peak shape without any buffer salt in mobile phase, suggesting the effective shielding of the silanol groups. The packing material also showed excellent chromatographic repeatability with intraday RSDs of the retention time of five nucleosides less than 0.048% (n = 3) and interday RSDs less than 0.33% (n = 7) and great pH stability (from 1.5 to 10.2). Finally, the stationary phase was applied to the separation of ginseng extract.

Abstract
Surface-initiated anionic-ring-opening multibranching polymerization was employed to prepare a hyperbranched polyglycerol (HPG) functionalized silica stationary phase for hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC). The obtained stationary phase was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The chromatographic properties of the prepared stationary phase were systematically investigated. The abundance and multitude distribution of hydroxyl groups in HPG endowed the stationary phase with improved hydrophilicity and enhanced separation performance compared with the stationary phase functionalized with monolayer of hydroxyl groups. The stationary phase showed excellent retention of various polar compounds, such as nucleosides, necleobases, phenols and sulfanilamides, indicating great potential in the separation of complex biosamples.
