Abstract
There has been much interest in evaluating the strength of the coordination interactions between N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) molecules and transition metal ions, nanocolloids and surfaces. We implement a top-down core digestion test of Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) triggered by incubation with a large molar excess of poly(ethylene glycol)-appended NHC molecules, where kinetic dislodging of surface atoms and formation of NHC-Au complexes progressively take place. We characterize the structure and chemical nature of the generated PEG-NHC-Au complexes using 1D and 2D 1H-13C NMR spectroscopy, supplemented with matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry, and transmission electron microscopy. We further apply the same test using thiol-modified molecules and find that though etching can be measured the kinetics are substantially slower. We discuss our findings within the classic digestion of transition metal ores and colloids induced by interactions with sodium cyanide, which provides an insight into the strength of coordination between the strong σ-donating (soft Lewis base) NHC and Au surfaces (having a soft Lewis acid character), as compared to gold-to-gold covalent binding.

Abstract
The catalytic addition of water to unsaturated C-C or C-N π bonds represent one of the most important and environmentally sustainable methods to form C-O bonds for the production of synthetic intermediates, medicinal agents and natural products. The traditional acid-catalyzed hydration of unsaturated compounds typically requires strong acids or toxic mercury salts, which limits practical applications and presents safety and environmental concerns. Today, transition-metal-catalyzed hydration supported by NHC (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) ligands has attracted major attention. By rational design of ligands, choice of metals and counterions as well as mechanistic studies and the development of heterogeneous systems, major progress has been achieved for a broad range of hydration processes. In particular, the combination of NHC ligands with gold shows excellent reactivity compared with other catalytic systems; however, other systems based on silver, ruthenium, osmium, platinum, rhodium and nickel have also been discovered. Ancillary NHC ligands provide stabilization of transition metals and ensure high catalytic activity in hydration owing to their unique electronic and steric properties. NHC-Au(I) complexes are particularly favored for hydration of unsaturated hydrocarbons due to soft and carbophilic properties of gold. In this review, we present a comprehensive overview of hydration reactions catalyzed by transition metal-NHC complexes and their applications in catalytic hydration of different classes of π-substrates with a focus on the role of NHC ligands, types of metals and counterions.

Abstract
An effective and condition-controlled way to synthesize with high selectivity a variety of functionalized indoles with potent biological properties has been developed. Notably, 2,4-dialkynyl indole products were obtained by direct double C-H bond alkynylation, whereas alkynyl at the C4 position could convert to carbonyl to generate 2-alkynyl-3,4-diacetyl indoles fast and effectively. Additionally, a one-pot relay catalytic reaction led to 2,5-di-alkynyl-3,4-diacetyl indoles when using a carbonyl group as the directing group and by controlling the type and quantity of additives. A possible mechanism was proposed based on many studies including deuterium-exchange experiments, the necessary conditions of product conversion, and the effect of water on the reaction.

Abstract
A computational analysis of a series of cationic and neutral gold imidazolylidene and benzimidizolylidene complexes is reported. The Bond Dissociation Energies of the various ligands in the complexes calculated at the PBE0-D3/def2-TZVP level of theory increase with increasing ligand volume, except for those of complexes containing t-butyl-substituted ligands, which are anomalously low particularly for the benzimidazolylidene species. Atoms in Molecules studies show the presence of a variety of weak intramolecular interactions, characterised by the presence of bond critical points with a range of different properties. Energy Decomposition Analysis and calculation of Electrostatic Surface Potentials indicate that some interactions are weakly attractive dispersion-type interactions, while others are repulsive. The octanol/water partition coefficients (log P values) were calculated as a measure of the lipophilicities of the complexes and were found to increase with increasing volume.

Abstract
Expanding the scope and applications of anionic N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), a novel series of magnesium NHC complexes is reported using a mixed sodium-magnesium approach. Sequential reactivity of classical imidazol- 2-ylidene carbene IPr with NaR and MgR2 (R=CH2 SiMe3 ) affords [(THF)3 Na(μ-IPr- )MgR2 (THF)] (2) [IPr- =:C{[N(2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 )]2 CHC] containing an anionic NHC ligand, whereas surprisingly sodium magnesiate [NaMgR3 ] fails to deprotonate IPr affording instead the redistribution coordination adduct [IPr2 Na2 MgR4 ] (1). Compound 2 undergoes selective C2-methylation when treated with MeOTf furnishing novel abnormal NHC complex [{aIPrMe MgR2 }2 ] (3). Dissolving 3 in THF led to the dissociation of this complex into MgR2 and aIPrMe with the latter isomerizing to the olefinic NHC IPr=CH2 . The ability of 2 and 3 to transfer their anionic and abnormal NHC ligands, respectively to AuI metal fragments has been investigated allowing the isolation and structural characterization of [RAu(μ-IPr- )MgR(THF)2 ] (4) and [aIPrMe AuR] (5) respectively. In both cases transfer of an alkyl R group is observed. However while 3 can also transfer its abnormal NHC ligand to give 5, in 4 the anionic NHC still remains coordinated to Mg via its C4 position, whereas the {AuR} fragment occupies the C2 position previously filled by a donor-solvated {Na(THF)3 }+ cation.

Abstract
Mesoionic carbenes are a subclass of the family of N-heterocyclic carbenes that generally feature less heteroatom stabilization of the carbenic carbon and hence impart specific donor properties and reactivity schemes when coordinated to a transition metal. Therefore, mesoionic carbenes and their complexes have attracted considerable attention both from a fundamental point of view as well as for application in catalysis and beyond. As a follow-up of an earlier Chemical Reviews overview from 2009, the organometallic chemistry of N-heterocyclic carbenes with reduced heteroatom stabilization is compiled for the 2008-2017 period, including specifically the chemistry of complexes containing 1,2,3-triazolylidenes, 4-imidazolylidenes, and related 5-membered N-heterocyclic carbenes with reduced heteratom stabilization such as (is)oxazolylidenes, pyrrazolylidenes, and thiazolylidenes, as well as pyridylidenes as 6-membered N-heterocyclic carbenes with reduced heteroatom stabilization. For each ligand subclass, metalation strategies, electronic and steric properties, and applications, in particular, in metal-mediated catalysis, are compiled. Mesoionic carbenes demonstrate particularly high activity in (water) oxidation, hydrogen transfer reactions, and cyclization reactions. Unique features of these ligands are identified such as their dipolar structure, their specific donor properties, as well as stability aspects of the ligand and the complexes, which provides opportunities for further research.

Abstract
The reaction of 4-substituted imidazol-2-ylidenes with various electrophiles produces a series of 2,4-functionalized imidazolium salts. Subsequent metalation of these precursors using AuCl(SMe2) provides the first examples of highly functionalized abnormal carbenegold(I) complexes. The present protocol introduces a new strategy for the synthesis of metallic abnormal carbenes featuring diverse functional groups.

Abstract
The mesomeric betaine imidazolium-1-ylphenolate forms a borane adduct with tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane by coordination with the phenolate oxygen, whereas its NHC tautomer 1-(2-phenol)imidazol-2-ylidene reacts with (triphenylphosphine)gold(I) chloride to give the cationic NHC complex [Au(NHC)2][Cl] by coordination with the carbene carbon atom. The anionic N-heterocyclic carbene 1-(2-phenolate)imidazol-2-ylidene gives the complexes [K][Au(NHC-)2], [Rh(NHC-)3] and [Ni(NHC-)2], respectively. Results of four single crystal analyses are presented.

Abstract
Visible light promoted hydration of a wide scope of alkynes to ketones catalyzed by rhodium(III) porphyrin complexes was described. The key intermediate β-carbonyl alkyl was observed and independently synthesized. The rate of photolysis is over two orders of magnitude faster than that of the thermal process.

Abstract
Seven coinage metal(I) complexes bearing two different triazole-based N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands, [1-tert-butyl-4-{2-[(N,N-dimethylamino)methyl]phenyl}-3-phenyl-1H-1,2,4-triazol-4-ium-5-ide and 1-tert-butyl-4-(4-methylphenyl)-3-phenyl-1H-1,2,4-triazol-4-ium-5-ide], were synthesized and fully characterized in solution by NMR spectroscopy as well as in the solid state by X-ray diffraction techniques. Furthermore, the XRD analysis showed that the bidentate coordination of the amino group substituted NHC ligand, previously observed for rhodium and palladium complexes, does not take place in the solid state structure of Au(I) complexes with various halide ligands. Nevertheless, the formation of sets of two head-to-tail oriented monomers aggregated via a weak metallophilic contact was revealed for both NHC ligands as well as for all three coinage metals with different halides. These experimental data correlate quite well with the previously published theoretical study on related complexes.

Abstract
A neutral gold(I) complex [(IPr)AuCl] (IPr = 1,3-bis(diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene) was found to be a highly effective catalyst for the hydration of terminal alkynes, including aromatic alkynes and aliphatic alkynes. The desired methyl ketones were obtained in high yields with complete regioselectivities. Furthermore, a series of optically active secondary alcohols could be obtained in high yield with good to excellent enatioselectivities via one-pot sequential hydration/asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) from terminal alkynes by the combination of of [(IPr)AuCl] and Cp*RhCl[(R,R)-TsDPEN] (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl, TsDPEN = N-(p-toluenesulfonyl)-1,2-diphenylethylenediamine). Notably, this research exhibited the potential of the direct use of neutral gold(I) complexes instead of cationic ones as catalysts for the activation of multiple bonds for organic synthesis.
