Abstract
Zn(II) complexes possess attractive characteristics for supramolecular chemistry, catalysis, and optoelectronic applications, while Zn-Salphen counterparts are also suitable as chemical sensors, although limited by solution-based to date. In this study, we report the synthesis of new polymers from methyl methacrylate, n-butyl acrylate, and a non-symmetrical Zn-Salphen complex. We show that this low-fluorescent complex exhibits aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) properties and that, the incorporation of AIEE complexes into a polymeric matrix make it possible to achieve fluorescent films with enhanced fluorescence suitable for sensing applications. As a proof of concept, these films could detect acetic acid, showing a decrease of up to 73% in the original fluorescence. Host/guest studies showed a subtle disruption of the emission in aggregates upon treatment with anion guests. These results indicate that an interaction between the guest and Zn-Salphen complex may occur, stabilizing or destabilizing the complex and causing a concomitant increase or decrease in emission.

Abstract
Caged complexes can provide impressive selective catalysts. Due to the complex shapes of such caged catalysts, however, the level of selectivity control of a single substrate cannot be extrapolated to other substrates. Herein, the substrate scope using 41 terminal alkene substrates is investigated in the hydroformylation reaction with an encapsulated rhodium catalyst [Rh(H)(CO)3(P(mPy3(ZnTPP)3))] (CAT1). For all substrates, the amount of branched products formed was higher with CAT1 than with the unencapsulated reference catalyst [Rh(H)(CO)2(P(mPy3))2] (CAT2) (linear/branched ratio between 2.14 and 0.12 for CAT1 and linear/branched ratio between 6.22 and 0.59 for CAT2). Interestingly, the level of cage induced selectivity depends strongly on the substrate structure that is converted. Analysis of the substrate scope combined with DFT calculations suggests that noncovalent interactions between the substrate moieties and cage walls play a key role in controlling the regioselectivity. Consequently, these supramolecular interactions were further optimized by replacing the ZnTPP building block with a zinc porphyrin analog that contained OiPr substituents on the meta position of the aryl rings. The resulting caged catalyst, CAT4, converted substrates with even higher branched selectivity.

Abstract
We describe the synthesis, crystallographic characterization of a new Cu-Salphen compound and its use as a host Lewis-acid against guest anions in two versions: a) free molecule, b) copolymerized with methyl methacrylate:n-butyl acrylate (1 : 4-wt.) as protective co-monomers. Higher contents in Cu-Salphen yielded larger and more homogeneous polymer sizes. Polymer size together with glass transitions, heat capacity, thermal degradation, guest-saturation degrees and host-guest species distribution profiles from spectrophotometric titrations explained growths of up to 630-fold in K11 and 180000-fold in K12 for the host's binding site attributable to a solvophobic protection from the macromolecular structure. Spectrofluorimetry revealed blue-shifted×13-16 larger luminescence for Cu-Salphen in the polymers (λem =488-498 nm) than that of the non-polymerized counterpart (λem =510-543 nm) and "turn-on" blue-shifted enhanced fluorescence upon guest association. We propose a cooperative incorporation of the guests occurring from the outer medium toward internally protected binding site pockets in the random coil polymer conformations.

Abstract
The synthesis, characterization and crystallographic analysis is reported of a new Nickel Salphen complex and its radical copolymerization with n-butyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate to produce novel host macromolecules with tunable association against guest anions. Spectrophotometric titrations of the complex and of the polymers revealed that a supramolecular regulation of guest-binding accessibility was enabled by the number of Ni-Salphen units per chain. The latter content in turn, determined the chain size and molecular weight uniformity upon polymerization, and likely increased the strength in interchain/intrachain non-covalent interactions over the nickel center and the acrylic domains. The study also showed that incorporation of the monomer into the acrylic polymer backbone opened the possibility for the nickel binding site to gain access to host:guest stoichiometric discrimination, switching from 1 : 1 (major) and 1 : 2 (minor) both coexisting for the host when in the free form, to mostly 1 : 2 when in the polymerized version.

Abstract
In this work, we present the synthesis of a novel Zn-Salphen complex containing an allyl group, which was used as building block in the further preparation of a new family of functional terpolymers. These polymers were obtained through radical co-polymerization with methyl metacrylate (MMA) and n-butyl acrylate (nBuA) in different ratios. The supramolecular recognition behavior of each polymer was evaluated via potentiometric measurements against selected anions in aqueous media. Interestingly, this proof of concept study shows that these systems were selective against only fluoride (F−) or both, fluoride and acetate (OAc−), by tailoring the relative content of Zn-Salphen monomer, thus making them a promising starting point for modular design of chemical sensors through straightforward synthetic approaches.

Abstract
The hydroformylation reaction is one of the most intensively explored reactions in the field of homogeneous transition metal catalysis, and many industrial applications are known. However, this atom economical reaction has not been used to its full potential, as many selectivity issues have not been solved. Traditionally, the selectivity is controlled by the ligand that is coordinated to the active metal center. Recently, supramolecular strategies have been demonstrated to provide powerful complementary tools to control activity and selectivity in hydroformylation reactions. In this review, we will highlight these supramolecular strategies. We have organized this paper in sections in which we describe the use of supramolecular bidentate ligands, substrate preorganization by interactions between the substrate and functional groups of the ligands, and hydroformylation catalysis in molecular cages.

Abstract
Aqueous biphasic catalysis is a convenient approach to convert organic, partially soluble molecules in water. However, converting more hydrophobic substrates is much more challenging as their solubility in water is extremely low. During the past ten years, substantial progress has been made towards improving the contact between hydrophobic substrates and a hydrophilic transition-metal catalyst. The main cutting-edge approaches developed in the field by using cyclodextrins as a supramolecular tool will be discussed and compared in this short review.

Abstract
The rediscovery of chiral monodentate ligands made in the period 1999-2003 had important consequences in enantioselective transition-metal catalysis, such as the introduction of the A/B concept (i.e., use of monodentate ligand mixtures) and, later, a renewed interest in supramolecular ligands capable of ligand-ligand and ligand-substrate interactions. This Personal Account summarizes the contributions made by our research group in this area in the period 2004-2015, which reflect the abovementioned developments. Within this area, we introduced some original concepts, such as 1) the use of chiral tropos ligand mixtures; 2) the development of new strategies to maximize heterocomplex formation from combinations of simple monodentate ligands; 3) the investigation of new ligand-ligand interactions to achieve selective heterocomplex formation; and 4) the development of highly efficient and synthetically accessible supramolecular ligands.

Abstract
The preparation, characterization and the molecular structure of a dinuclear uranyl complex [(UO2)2L(OCMe2)2] supported by the bis-salophen ligand N,N′,N″,N′″-tetra-(3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylidene)-1,2,4,5-phenylenetetraamine (L4–) is described. [(UO2)2L(OCMe2)2] was prepared by reaction of uranyl nitrate with the neutral, protonated form of the ligand (H4L) in acetone. From a saturated acetone solution [(UO2)2L(OCMe2)2]·1.5(OCMe2) crystallizes triclinically, space group P1̅ with a = 1522.7(2), b = 1751.4(2), c = 1815.4(2) Å, α = 109.16(1), β = 99.29(1), γ = 105.29(1)° and Z = 2. Each uranium atom is surrounded in a distorted pentagonal bipyramidal fashion by two O and two N atoms of the salicylidene units, one O atom of an acetone ligand, and the two oxo groups. The cyclic voltammogram of [(UO2)2L(OCMe2)2] shows two quasi-reversible redox processes centered at +0.57 V and +0.82 V vs. Fc+/Fc attributed to the sequential oxidation of the coordinating phenolates to phenoxyl radicals. The crystal structure of an ethanol solvate of H4L was also determined by X-ray crystallography. H4L·5EtOH: triclinic, space group P1̅, a = 1003.4(3), b = 1187.7(3), c = 1905.1(5) Å, α = 75.75(2), β = 78.74(2), γ = 66.66(2)°, Z = 1.

Abstract
Regio- and enantioselective hydroformylation of styrenes is attained upon embedding a chiral Rh complex in a nonchiral supramolecular cage formed from coordination-driven self-assembly of macrocyclic dipalladium complexes and tetracarboxylate zinc porphyrins. The resulting supramolecular catalyst converts styrene derivatives into aldehyde products with much higher chiral induction in comparison to the nonencapsulated Rh catalyst. Spectroscopic analysis shows that encapsulation does not change the electronic properties of the catalyst nor its first coordination sphere. Instead, enhanced enantioselectivity is rationalized by the modification of the second coordination sphere occurring upon catalyst inclusion inside the cage, being one of the few examples in achieving an enantioselective outcome via indirect through-space control of the chirality around the catalyst center. This effect resembles those taking place in enzymatic sites, where structural constraints imposed by the enzyme cavity can impart stereoselectivities that cannot be attained in bulk. These results are a showcase for the future development of asymmetric catalysis by using size-tunable supramolecular capsules.

Abstract
A library of 19 binol-derived chiral monophosphites that contain a phthalic acid diamide group (PhthalaPhos) has been designed and synthesized in four steps. These new ligands were screened in the rhodium-catalyzed enantioselective hydrogenation of prochiral dehydroamino esters and enamides. Several members of the library showed excellent enantioselectivity with methyl 2-acetamido acrylate (6 ligands gave >97% ee), methyl (Z)-2-acetamido cinnamate (6 ligands gave >94% ee), and N-(1-phenylvinyl)acetamide (9 ligands gave >95% ee), whilst only a few representatives afforded high enantioselectivities for challenging and industrially relevant substrates N-(3,4-dihydronaphthalen-1-yl)-acetamide (96% ee in one case) and methyl (E)-2-(acetamidomethyl)-3-phenylacrylate (99% ee in one case). In most cases, the new ligands were more active and more stereoselective than their structurally related monodentate phosphites (which are devoid of functional groups that are capable of hydrogen-bonding interactions). Control experiments and kinetic studies were carried out that allowed us to demonstrate that hydrogen-bonding interactions involving the diamide group of the PhthalaPhos ligands strongly contribute to their outstanding catalytic properties. Computational studies carried out on a rhodium precatalyst and on a conceivable intermediate in the hydrogenation catalytic cycle shed some light on the role played by hydrogen bonding, which is likely to act in a substrate-orientation effect.

Abstract
The self-assembly features of a series of (non)symmetrical Zn(salphen) complexes have been studied in detail by X-ray crystallography, NMR and UV-vis techniques. The combined data demonstrate that the stability of these dimeric assemblies and the relative position of each monomeric unit within the dinuclear structure depend on the location and combination of the aromatic ring substituents.

Abstract
Recognition of inorganic phosphates PO(4)(3-), P(2)O(7)(4-), and P(3)O(10)(5-) and nucleotides AMP(2-), ADP(3-), and ATP(4-) by Zn(2+)-salophen complexes 1 and 2 in ethanol was investigated by different spectroscopic techniques. (31)P NMR and mass spectrometry showed that anions of both series are bound by 1 and 2, while absorption and emission studies revealed that only nucleotides produce relevant changes in the spectral properties of the two hosts. (1)H NMR studies proved that the adenine aromatic group is involved in the complexation, thus pointing out the role of supramolecular ditopic receptors played by salophen derivatives toward this class of biologically relevant substrates. The lifetime of the photogenerated triplet state of the Zn(2+)-salophen compounds was measured by nanosecond laser flash photolysis, and the observed changes upon increasing the concentration of nucleotides allowed the identification of the formation of a 1:0.5 host/guest intermediate complex additionally to the formation of a 1:1 complex.
