Abstract
This communication reports an effective strategy helping address the long-troubling melt processing issue of isotactic polybutene-1 (i-PB) caused by its extremely slow II-I crystal phase transition. The solution lies in a facile synthesis of i-PB containing H-shape long-chain-branching structures (LCB-i-PB) by applying a so-called ω-alkenylmethyldichlorosilane copolymerization-hydrolysis (ACH) chemistry to butene-1 polymerization with Ziegler-Natta or metallocene catalysts. It is evident that the H-shape LCB structures effectively enhance chain entanglements of i-PB and induce an over-the-board acceleration of the overall melt crystallization process including nucleation, form II crystallization, and form II-form I phase transition. As i-PB usually requires up to a week to reach equilibrium of the II-I phase transition, it is found that with LCB-i-PB such a transition is almost finished within as short as 24 h to even higher degrees.

Abstract
The II-I phase transition of isotactic poly(1-butene) (iPBu) leads to improved mechanical performance. However, this will take several weeks and increase storage and processing costs. In this work, shear forces are introduced into the supercooled iPBu melt, and the effects of isothermal crystallization temperature (Tc) and shear temperature (Tshear) on crystallization and phase transition are explored. Shear-induced transcrystalline morphology of Form II with a significantly shortened crystallization induction period can be observed at relatively high Tc (105 °C). Besides, the shear-induced Form II can transit to Form I faster than the unsheared one. In addition, the phase transition rate increases as the Tshear decreases, with the fastest rate occurring at Tshear of 120 °C. The half transition time (t1/2) is measured as 6.3 h when Tc = 105 °C, Tshear = 120 °C, which is much shorter than the 20.7 h required for unsheared samples. The accelerated phase transition of iPBu can be attributed to the stretching of molecular chains, resulting from shear treatment. This study provides a quantitative analysis of the influence of the shear treatment and the Tshear on the II-I phase transition rate. It also presents a cost-effective and straightforward approach for expediting the phase transition process.

Abstract
Polymorphism (and its extended form - pseudopolymorphism) in solids is ubiquitous in mineralogy, crystallography, chemistry/biochemistry, materials science, and the pharmaceutical industries. Despite the difficulty of controlling (pseudo-)polymorphism, the realization of specific (pseudo-)polymorphic phases and associated boundary structures is an efficient route to enhance material performance for energy conversion and electromechanical applications. Here, this work applies the pseudopolymorphic phase (PP) concept to a thermoelectric copper sulfide, Cu2- x S (x ≤ 0.25), via CuBr2 doping. A peak ZT value of 1.25 is obtained at 773 K in Cu1.8 S + 3 wt% CuBr2 , which is 2.3 times higher than that of a pristine Cu1.8 S sample. Atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy confirms the transformation of pristine Cu1.8 S low digenite into PP-engineered high digenite, as well as the formation of (semi-)coherent interfaces between different PPs, which is expected to enhance phonon scattering. The results demonstrate that PP engineering is an effective approach for achieving improved thermoelectric performance in Cu-S compounds. It is also expected to be useful in other materials.

Abstract
The crystallization and II–I phase transition of functionalized polybutene-1 with hydroxyl groups were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. The results show that the incorporated hydroxyl groups increase the nucleation density but decrease the growth rate in melt crystallization. Interestingly, for the generated tetragonal form II, the presence of polar hydroxyl groups can effectively accelerate the phase transition into the thermodynamically stable modification of trigonal form I, especially with stepwise annealing and high incorporation. Using stepwise annealing, II–I phase transition was enhanced by an additional nucleation step performed at a relatively low temperature, and the optimal nucleation temperature to obtain the maximum transition degree was ‒10 °C, which is independent from the content of hydroxyl groups. Furthermore, the accelerating effect of hydroxyl groups on the II–I transition kinetics can be increased by reducing the crystallization temperature when preparing form II crystallites. These results provide a potential molecular design approach for developing polybutene-1 materials.

Abstract
The phase behavior and related morphological evolution of thin films of lengthy alkyl substituted core-tetrachlorinated perylene bisimide (C18-4ClPBI), a large π-conjugated molecule, have been studied. It is found that the C18-4ClPBI can exist in two different crystalline phases depending on temperature, which transform reversibly in heating and cooling processes. The X-ray diffraction results demonstrate that the two crystalline forms of C18-4ClPBI exhibit a similar packing geometry but with different unit cell dimensions. It is confirmed that the low-temperature phase is packed more compactly than its high-temperature counterpart. During high-temperature to low-temperature crystalline phase transition, nonbirefringent protrusions were observed, which disassembled in the reverse crystalline phase transition process during heating. The exact formation mechanism of the protrusions is not clear at the moment. Nevertheless, their influence on the transfer characteristics of the polycrystalline C18-4ClPBI thin film has been clearly illustrated.

Abstract
Copolymerization is an effective strategy to regulate the molecular structure and tune crystalline structures. In this work, novel butene-1 copolymers with different polyethylene glycol (PEG) grafts (number-average molecular weight Mn = 750, 2000, and 4000 g/mol) were synthesized, for the first time introducing long-chain grafts to the polybutene-1 main chain. For these PEG-grafted copolymers, crystallization, melting, and phase transition behaviors were explored using differential scanning calorimetry. With respect to the linear homopolymer, the incorporation of a trimethylsilyl group decreases the cooling crystallization temperature (Tc), whereas the presence of the long PEG grafts unexpectedly elevates Tc. For isothermal crystallization, a critical temperature was found at 70 °C, below which all polyethylene glycol-grafted butene-1 (PB-PEG) copolymers have faster crystallization kinetics than polybutene-1 (PB). The subsequent melting process shows that for the identical crystallization temperature, generated PB-PEG crystallites always have lower melting temperatures than that of PB. Moreover, the II-I phase transition behavior of copolymers is also dependent on the length of PEG grafts. When form II, obtained from isothermal crystallization at 60 °C, was annealed at 25 °C, PB-PEG-750, with the shortest PEG grafts of Mn = 750 g/mol, could have the faster transition rate than PB. However, PB-PEG-750 exhibits a negative correlation between transition rate and crystallization temperature. Differently, in PB-PEG copolymers with PEG grafts Mn = 2000 and 4000 g/mol, transition rates rise with elevating crystallization temperature, which is similar with homopolymer PB. Therefore, the grafting of the PEG side chain provides the available method to tune phase transition without sacrificing crystallization capability in butene-1 copolymers.

Deformation Mechanisms of Isotactic Poly-1-Butene and Its Copolymers Deformed by Plane-Strain Compression and Tension. CRYSTALS 2019. Abstract
The deformation-induced crystalline texture of isotactic poly-1-butene and its random copolymers with ethylene, developing during plane-strain compression and uniaxial tension, was investigated with X-Ray pole figures, supported by small-angle scattering (SAXS) and thermal analysis (DSC). The crystallographic (100)[001] chain slip was identified as the primary deformation mechanism, active in both compression and tension, supported by the transverse slip system and interlamellar shear. At the true strain around 0.8, lamellae fragmentation and partial destruction of the crystalline phase due to slip localization was observed, much heavier in tension than in plane-strain compression. That fragmentation brought an acceleration of the slip, which ultimately led to a common fiber texture in tensile samples, with the chain direction oriented preferentially along the drawing (flow) direction. Slightly more complicated crystal texture, reflecting triaxiality of the stress field, still with the chain direction preferentially oriented near the flow direction, was observed in compression. Additional deformation mechanism was observed at low strain in the plane-strain compression, which was either interlamellar shear operating in amorphous layers and supported by crystallographic slips or the simultaneous (110)[110] transverse slip operating on a pair of (110) planes. It was concluded that deformation proceeded similarly in both studied deformation modes, with practically the same deformation mechanisms engaged. Then, the plane-strain compression, proceeding homogeneously and preventing cavitation, seems more suitable for studies of the real deformation behavior, not obscured by any unwanted side-effects.
