Green plastics: Direct production from grocery wastes to bioplastics and structural characterization by using synchrotron FTIR

Lignocellulosic bioplastics were produced using four different green wastes: hemp, parsley stem, pineapple leaves and walnut shell. Two different solutions were used to dissolve the green wastes: trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and pure water. The changes in their natural structures and the solvent effect during the regeneration in biofilm formation were investigated by using Synchrotron FTIR Microspectroscopy (SR-µFTIR). The presence of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin components in the water-based biofilms was confirmed. After dissolving in TFA, the spectra demonstrated some additional bands especially in the hemicellulose region. This is due to the hydrolysis of ester bonds and conversion to carboxylic acids. Principal component analysis showed grouping due to different solvents and polymer addition. Hemp-PVA (Polyvinyl Alcohol) composite biofilms were obtained by adding polyvinyl alcohol to the hemp solution to give extra strength to the hemp biofilms. It has been shown that water-based hemp-PVA biofilms do not cause any significant spectral changes, comparing with pure hemp and PVA spectra. However, after dissolving in TFA, unlike water-based biofilms, it appears that TFA molecules are retained by PVA through hydrogen bonds of TFA's carboxylic acid and hydroxyl groups and distinct spectral regions belong to TFA bands are clearly identified.

A novel "turn-on" NIR fluorescent probe based on benzothianone for the detection of palladium species and its application in cell and zebrafish

The development of an efficient palladium probe holds significant application value, considering the detrimental impact of palladium contaminants on human health. Thus, it is critical to create a sensitive detection method. To this end, a fluorescent probe TM-TPA-Pd based on benzothianone structure was designed, using allyl carbonate as the Pd0 recognition unit. TM-TPA-Pd exhibited high sensitivity (1.4 eq), selectivity, near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence (798 nm), and low detection limit (0.46 μM) for Pd0 with a rapid "turn-on" fluorescence signal (5 min). Furthermore, TM-TPA-Pd has extremely low cytotoxicity and has been successfully applied to detecting cells and zebrafish, which has great potential for palladium detection in biological systems.

Thiol-polyethylene glycol-folic acid (HS-PEG-FA) induced aggregation of Au@Ag nanoparticles: A SERS and extinction UV-Vis spectroscopy combined study

Plasmonic colloidal nanoparticles (NPs) functionalised with polymers are widely employed in diverse applications, offering advantages demonstrated over non-functionalised NPs such as enhanced colloidal stability or increased biocompatibility. However, functionalisation with polymers does not always increase the stability of the colloidal system. This work explores the intricate relationship between the functionalisation of plasmonic core@shell Au@Ag nanoparticles (NPs) with thiol-polyethylene glycol-folic acid (HS-PEG-FA) polymer chains and the resulting stability and spectral characteristics of Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) nanotags based on these NPs. We demonstrate that varying levels of HS-PEG-FA grafting influence nanotag stability, with a low level of grafting causing aggregation and subsequently affecting the spectral signature of Raman-reporter molecules attached to the surface of the NP. Electrostatic destabilisation is identified as the primary mechanism driving aggregation, impacting the SERS spectrum of Malachite Green isothiocyanate (MGITC) whose spectral shape is different between the aggregated and non-aggregated NPs. The findings provide valuable insights into NPs stability under different conditions, offering essential considerations for the design and optimisation of SERS nanotags in bio-analytical applications, particularly those involving data processing based on spectral shape, such as in multiplex approaches where experimental spectra are decomposed with several reference components.

Raman spectroscopic investigation of polymer based magnetic multicomponent scaffolds

Scaffolds acting as an artificial matrix for cell proliferation are one of the bone tissue engineering approaches to the treatment of bone tissue defects. In the presented study, novel multicomponent scaffolds composed of a poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), phenolic compounds such as tannic (TA) and gallic acids (GA), and nanocomponents such as silica-coated magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MNPs-c) and functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been produced as candidates for such artificial substitutes. Well-developed interconnected porous structures were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Raman spectra showed that the highly crystalline nature of PCL was reduced by the addition of nanoadditives. In the case of scaffolds containing MNPs-c and TA, the formation of a Fe-TA complex was concluded because characteristic bands of chelation of the Fe3+ ion by phenolic catechol oxygen appeared. It was found that the necessary conditions for the crystallization of the PCL/MNPs-c/TA are for the catechol groups to be able to penetrate the porous silica shell of MNPs-c, as during experiment with MNPs-c and TA without polymer, no such complexation was observed. Moreover, the number of catechol groups, the spatial structure and molecular size of this phenolic compound are also crucial for complexation process because GA does not form complexes. Therefore, the PCL/CNTs/MNPs-c/TA scaffolds are interesting candidates to consider for their possible medical applications.

Non-destructive detection and identification of plasticizers in PVC objects by means of machine learning-assisted Raman spectroscopy

Vibrational spectroscopic techniques, such as Raman spectroscopy, as a non-destructive method combined with machine learning (ML), were successfully tested as a quick method of plasticizer identification in poly(vinyl chloride) - PVC objects in heritage collection. ML algorithms such as Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machines (SVM), and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) were applied to the classification and identification of the most common plasticizers used in the case of PVC. The CNN model was able to successfully classify the five plasticizers under study from their Raman spectra with a high accuracy of (98%), whereas the highest accuracy (100%) was observed with the RF algorithm. The finding opens doors for the development of robust and economical tools for conservators and museum professionals for fast identification of materials in heritage collections.

Vibrational spectroscopy of dynamic interactions and relaxation processes in ionic systems

In recent years, there has been a boom in the publication of research results on ionic (electrolyte) systems used in the creation of electrochemical energy systems (batteries, supercapacitors, etc.). One of the alternative ways to obtain dynamic information in ionic systems is spectroscopic experiments, and the most valuable information on the behavior of condensed systems at picosecond and adjacent time intervals is provided by vibrational spectroscopy. The source of this information is the analysis of the shape and width of the lines in the vibrational spectra of ion systems. This review aims to systematize the theoretical and methodological aspects of the study of the dynamics of ion systems by vibrational spectroscopy.

Emergent microenvironments of nucleoli

In higher eukaryotes, the nucleolus harbors at least three sub-phases that facilitate multiple functionalities including ribosome biogenesis. The three prominent coexisting sub-phases are the fibrillar center (FC), the dense fibrillar component (DFC), and the granular component (GC). Here, we review recent efforts in profiling sub-phase compositions that shed light on the types of physicochemical properties that emerge from compositional biases and territorial organization of specific types of macromolecules. We highlight roles played by molecular grammars which refers to protein sequence features including the substrate binding domains, the sequence features of intrinsically disordered regions, and the multivalence of these distinct types of domains / regions. We introduce the concept of a barcode of emergent physicochemical properties of nucleoli. Although our knowledge of the full barcode remains incomplete, we hope that the concept prompts investigations into undiscovered emergent properties and engenders an appreciation for how and why unique microenvironments control biochemical reactions.

Disordered mesoporous silica particles: an emerging platform to deliver proteins to the lungs

Pulmonary delivery and formulation of biologics are among the more complex and growing scientific topics in drug delivery. We herein developed a dry powder formulation using disordered mesoporous silica particles (MSP) as the sole excipient and lysozyme, the most abundant antimicrobial proteins in the airways, as model protein. The MSP had the optimal size for lung deposition (2.43 ± 0.13 µm). A maximum lysozyme loading capacity (0.35 mg/mg) was achieved in 150 mM PBS, which was seven times greater than that in water. After washing and freeze-drying, we obtained a dry powder consisting of spherical, non-aggregated particles, free from residual buffer, or unabsorbed lysozyme. The presence of lysozyme was confirmed by TGA and FT-IR, while N2 adsorption/desorption and SAXS analysis indicate that the protein is confined within the internal mesoporous structure. The dry powder exhibited excellent aerodynamic performance (fine particle fraction <5 µm of 70.32%). Lysozyme was released in simulated lung fluid in a sustained kinetics and maintaining high enzymatic activity (71-91%), whereas LYS-MSP were shown to degrade into aggregated nanoparticulate microstructures, reaching almost complete dissolution (93%) within 24 h. MSPs were nontoxic to in vitro lung epithelium. The study demonstrates disordered MSP as viable carriers to successfully deliver protein to the lungs, with high deposition and retained activity.

CYCLOPEp Builder: Facilitating cyclic peptide and nanotube research through a user-friendly web platform

The study of cyclic peptides (CPs) and self-assembling cyclic peptide nanotubes (SCPNs) is pivotal in advancing applications in diverse fields such as biomedicine, nanoelectronics, and catalysis. Recognizing the limitations in the experimental study of these molecules, this article introduces CYCLOPEp Builder, a comprehensive web-based application designed to facilitate the design, simulation, and visualization of CPs and SCPNs. The tool is engineered to generate molecular topologies, essential for conducting Molecular Dynamics simulations that span All-Atom to Coarse-Grain resolutions. CYCLOPEp Builder's user-friendly interface simplifies the complex process of molecular modeling, providing researchers with the ability to readily construct CPs and SCPNs. The platform is versatile, equipped with various force fields, and capable of producing structures ranging from individual CPs to complex SCPNs with different sequences, offering parallel and antiparallel orientations among them. By enhancing the capacity for detailed visualization of molecular assemblies, CYCLOPEp Builder improves the understanding of CP and SCPN molecular interactions. This tool is a step forward in democratizing access to sophisticated simulations, offering an invaluable resource to the scientific community engaged in the exploration of supramolecular structures. Deep learning of antibody epitopes using positional permutation vectors

Background

The accurate computational prediction of B cell epitopes can vastly reduce the cost and time required for identifying potential epitope candidates for the design of vaccines and immunodiagnostics. However, current computational tools for B cell epitope prediction perform poorly and are not fit-for-purpose, and there remains enormous room for improvement and the need for superior prediction strategies.

Results

Here we propose a novel approach that improves B cell epitope prediction by encoding epitopes as binary positional permutation vectors that represent the position and structural properties of the amino acids within a protein antigen sequence that interact with an antibody. This approach supersedes the traditional method of defining epitopes as scores per amino acid on a protein sequence, where each score reflects each amino acids predicted probability of partaking in a B cell epitope antibody interaction. In addition to defining epitopes as binary positional permutation vectors, the approach also uses the 3D macrostructure features of the unbound protein structures, and in turn uses these features to train another deep learning model on the corresponding antibody-bound protein 3D structures. This enables the algorithm to learn the key structural and physiochemical features of the unbound protein and embedded epitope that initiate the antibody binding process helping to eliminate "induced fit" biases in the training data. We demonstrate that the strategy predicts B cell epitopes with improved accuracy compared to the existing tools. Additionally, we show that this approach reliably identifies the majority of experimentally verified epitopes on the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 not seen by the model during training and generalizes in a very robust manner on dissimilar data not seen by the model during training.

Conclusions

With the approach described herein, a primary protein sequence and a query positional permutation vector encoding a putative epitope is sufficient to predict B cell epitopes in a reliable manner, potentially advancing the use of computational prediction of B cell epitopes in biomedical research applications.

Chromatin phase separation and nuclear shape fluctuations are correlated in a polymer model of the nucleus

Abnormal cell nuclear shapes are hallmarks of diseases, including progeria, muscular dystrophy, and many cancers. Experiments have shown that disruption of heterochromatin and increases in euchromatin lead to nuclear deformations, such as blebs and ruptures. However, the physical mechanisms through which chromatin governs nuclear shape are poorly understood. To investigate how heterochromatin and euchromatin might govern nuclear morphology, we studied chromatin microphase separation in a composite coarse-grained polymer and elastic shell simulation model. By varying chromatin density, heterochromatin composition, and heterochromatin-lamina interactions, we show how the chromatin phase organization may perturb nuclear shape. Increasing chromatin density stabilizes the lamina against large fluctuations. However, increasing heterochromatin levels or heterochromatin-lamina interactions enhances nuclear shape fluctuations by a "wetting"-like interaction. In contrast, fluctuations are insensitive to heterochromatin's internal structure. Our simulations suggest that peripheral heterochromatin accumulation could perturb nuclear morphology, while nuclear shape stabilization likely occurs through mechanisms other than chromatin microphase organization.

Claes K, Blondeel P, Monstrey S, Dorpe JV, Van Vlierberghe S. Photo-crosslinkable polyester microneedles as sustained drug release systems toward hypertrophic scar treatment

Burn injuries can result in a significant inflammatory response, often leading to hypertrophic scarring (HTS). Local drug therapies e.g. corticoid injections are advised to treat HTS, although they are invasive, operator-dependent, extremely painful and do not permit extended drug release. Polymer-based microneedle (MN) arrays can offer a viable alternative to standard care, while allowing for direct, painless dermal drug delivery with tailorable drug release profile. In the current study, we synthesized photo-crosslinkable, acrylate-endcapped urethane-based poly(ε-caprolactone) (AUP-PCL) toward the fabrication of MNs. Physico-chemical characterization (1H-NMR, evaluation of swelling, gel fraction) of the developed polymer was performed and confirmed successful acrylation of PCL-diol. Subsequently, AUP-PCL, and commercially available PCL-based microneedle arrays were fabricated for comparative evaluation of the constructs. Hydrocortisone was chosen as model drug. To enhance the drug release efficiency of the MNs, Brij®35, a nonionic surfactant was exploited. The thermal properties of the MNs were evaluated via differential scanning calorimetry. Compression testing of the arrays confirmed that the MNs stay intact upon applying a load of 7 N, which correlates to the standard dermal insertion force of MNs. The drug release profile of the arrays was evaluated, suggesting that the developed PCL arrays can offer efficient drug delivery for up to two days, while the AUP-PCL arrays can provide a release up to three weeks. Finally, the insertion of MN arrays into skin samples was performed, followed by histological analysis demonstrating the AUP-PCL MNs outperforming the PCL arrays upon providing pyramidical-shaped perforations through the epidermal layer of the skin.

Multifunctional scaffolds for bone repair following age-related biological decline: Promising prospects for smart biomaterial-driven technologies

The repair of large bone defects due to trauma, disease, and infection can be exceptionally challenging in the elderly. Despite best clinical practice, bone regeneration within contemporary, surgically implanted synthetic scaffolds is often problematic, inconsistent, and insufficient where additional osteobiological support is required to restore bone. Emergent smart multifunctional biomaterials may drive important and dynamic cellular crosstalk that directly targets, signals, stimulates, and promotes an innate bone repair response following age-related biological decline and when in the presence of disease or infection. However, their role remains largely undetermined. By highlighting their mechanism/s and mode/s of action, this review spotlights smart technologies that favorably align in their conceivable ability to directly target and enhance bone repair and thus are highly promising for future discovery for use in the elderly. The four degrees of interactive scaffold smartness are presented, with a focus on bioactive, bioresponsive, and the yet-to-be-developed autonomous scaffold activity. Further, cell- and biomolecular-assisted approaches were excluded, allowing for contemporary examination of the capabilities, demands, vision, and future requisites of next-generation biomaterial-induced technologies only. Data strongly supports that smart scaffolds hold significant promise in the promotion of bone repair in patients with a reduced osteobiological response. Importantly, many techniques have yet to be tested in preclinical models of aging. Thus, greater clarity on their proficiency to counteract the many unresolved challenges within the scope of aging bone is highly warranted and is arguably the next frontier in the field. This review demonstrates that the use of multifunctional smart synthetic scaffolds with an engineered strategy to circumvent the biological insufficiencies associated with aging bone is a viable route for achieving next-generation therapeutic success in the elderly population.

In vitro and in vivo evaluation of biohybrid tissue-engineered vascular grafts with transformative 1H/19F MRI traceable scaffolds

Biohybrid tissue-engineered vascular grafts (TEVGs) promise long-term durability due to their ability to adapt to hosts' needs. However, the latter calls for sensitive non-invasive imaging approaches to longitudinally monitor their functionality, integrity, and positioning. Here, we present an imaging approach comprising the labeling of non-degradable and degradable TEVGs' components for their in vitro and in vivo monitoring by hybrid 1H/19F MRI. TEVGs (inner diameter 1.5 mm) consisted of biodegradable poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) fibers passively incorporating superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs), non-degradable polyvinylidene fluoride scaffolds labeled with highly fluorinated thermoplastic polyurethane (19F-TPU) fibers, a smooth muscle cells containing fibrin blend, and endothelial cells. 1H/19F MRI of TEVGs in bioreactors, and after subcutaneous and infrarenal implantation in rats, revealed that PLGA degradation could be faithfully monitored by the decreasing SPIONs signal. The 19F signal of 19F-TPU remained constant over weeks. PLGA degradation was compensated by cells' collagen and α-smooth-muscle-actin deposition. Interestingly, only TEVGs implanted on the abdominal aorta contained elastin. XTT and histology proved that our imaging markers did not influence extracellular matrix deposition and host immune reaction. This concept of non-invasive longitudinal assessment of cardiovascular implants using 1H/19F MRI might be applicable to various biohybrid tissue-engineered implants, facilitating their clinical translation.

Preparation and properties of cationic starch-carrageenan‑sodium alginate hydrogels with pH and temperature sensitivity

In this study, cationic starch-carrageenan‑sodium alginate (CAS/CR/SA) hydrogels with different weight ratios of carrageenan and sodium alginate were prepared and their properties such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), rheological properties, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and methylene blue adsorption test were measured. The results showed that the viscosity and the shear strain resistance of the CAS/CR/SA hybrid hydrogels positively correlated with their sodium alginate contents. The hybrid hydrogels with high carrageenan contents exhibited a high energy storage modulus (G') and a high loss modulus (G"). The swelling and methylene blue adsorption experiments showed that the CAS/CR/SA hydrogels had pH and temperature sensitivity. The hydrogels reached adsorption equilibrium in 12 h (alkaline conditions) and 24-36 h (acidic conditions). The adsorption kinetics of the hybrid hydrogels showed that their adsorption process was mainly controlled by chemisorption and that adsorption was exothermic (ΔH° < 0).

Effects of saccharide type and extended heating on the Maillard reaction and physicochemical properties of high-solid gelatin gels

This research delves into the Maillard reaction (MR) in high-solid gelatin-saccharide mixtures consisting of 8% and 72% of allulose, fructose, or fructo-oligosaccharides, which were subjected to varied duration (0-60min) of thermal processing prior to gelation. Physicochemical properties of the gels, including color, chemical composition, protein crosslinking, mechanical strength, in-vitro digestibility and antioxidant activities, were characterized. At pH ∼5.5 and intermediate water activities (0.6-0.7), fast browning was observed through sugar degradation and sugar-amine interactions, which were intensified by prolonged heating. The MR reactivity of saccharides followed: AL > FRU > FOS. Characteristic products (MRPs, e.g., α-dicarbonyls, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, and advanced glycation end products) were identified, with the spectra of MRPs varying significantly between monosaccharides and oligosaccharides. The MR-induced protein glycation and crosslinking exhibited certain negative impacts on the gel strength and in-vitro protein digestibility. Furthermore, all gelatin-saccharide mixtures exhibited augmented antioxidant properties, with the gelatin-AL mixtures displaying the highest free radical scavenging rates.

Quercetin encapsulation and release using rapid CO2-responsive rosin-based surfactants in Pickering emulsions

Emulsion-based delivery systems are extensively employed for encapsulating functional active ingredients, protecting them from degradation, and enhancing bioavailability and release efficiency. Here, a CO2-responsive surfactant synthesized from rosin displays rapid responsiveness to CO2 at room temperature, transitioning reversibly switches between active and inactive states multiple times. The dual tertiary amines on the rosin rigid structure contributes to its CO2 sensitivity. When in its active cationic form, in conjunction with silica nanoparticles, it exhibits desired Pickering emulsification performance across various oil phases. In the Pickering emulsion loaded with quercetin, the encapsulation efficiency and loading efficiency reached 80.50% and 0.69%, respectively, with stability lasting at least 30 days. The system provides robust protection for quercetin against external factors, such as UV and heat, revealing sustained release effects. This study investigated the potential of using rosin-based CO2-responsive surfactants alongside nanoparticles to design stable Pickering emulsion systems for active substance encapsulation and sustained release.

A novel polydiacetylene-functionalized fibrinogen paper-based biosensor for on-spot and rapid detection of Staphylococcus aureus

Staphylococcus aureus contamination continues to be a harmful foodborne pathogen threatening of human health, and there is a growing need for rapid detection technologies. This study proposed a novel paper biosensor based on a polydiacetylene (PDA) polymer functionalized fibrinogen (Fg) for the detection of S. aureus in food sources. The fluorophore was developed based on the high binding ability of fibrinogen-binding proteins on the surface of S. aureus. This binding caused twisting in the PDA backbone, leading to changes in chromatic and fluorescent. The detection limit of this method was 50.1 CFU/mL for S. aureus-contaminated foodstuffs and 65.0 CFU/mL for the pure S. aureus culture, and the novelty came from its rapidity and selectivity for S. aureus compared to other foodborne bacteria. In summary, the present work provides a rapid detection method for S. aureus detection, which will help in addressing food safety-related issues.

Machine learning predicts heavy metal adsorption on iron (oxyhydr)oxides: A combined insight into the adsorption efficiency and binding configuration

The adsorption of heavy metal on iron (oxyhydr)oxides is one of the most vital geochemical/chemical processes controlling the environmental fate of these contaminants in natural and engineered systems. Traditional experimental methods to investigate this process are often time-consuming and labor-intensive due to the complexity of influencing factors. Herein, a comprehensive database containing the adsorption data of 11 heavy metals on 7 iron (oxyhydr)oxides was constructed, and the machine learning models was successfully developed to predict the adsorption efficiency. The random forest (RF) models achieved high prediction performance (R2 > 0.9, RMSE < 0.1, and MAE < 0.07) and interpretability. Key factors influencing heavy metal adsorption efficiency were identified as mineral surface area, solution pH, metal concentration, and mineral concentration. Additionally, by integrating our previous binding configuration models, we elucidated the simultaneous effects of input features on adsorption efficiency and binding configuration through partial dependence analysis. Higher pH simultaneously enhanced adsorption efficiency and affinity for cations, whereas lower pH benefited that for oxyanions. While higher mineral surface area improved the metal adsorption efficiency, the adsorption affinity could be weakened. This work presents a data-driven approach for investigating metal adsorption behavior and elucidating the influencing mechanisms from macroscopic to microcosmic scale, thereby offering comprehensive guidance for predicting and managing the environmental behavior of heavy metals.

Advancing optoelectronic characteristics of Diketopyrrolopyrrole-Based molecules as donors for organic and as hole transporting materials for perovskite solar cells

A stable and efficient hole-transport material (HTM) is crucial for high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs). A 2,2',7,7'-tetrakis[N,N-di(4-methoxyphenyl)amino]-9,9'-spirobifluorene (Spiro-MeOTAD) being used widely to prepare highly efficient PSCs. However, Spiro-MeOTAD has some limitations due to its complex synthesis, which increases its cost, and it also requires dopants to improve its performance. Therefore, we designed thirteen unique small-molecule-based HTMs (MK1-MK13), which are easy to synthesize, highly cost-effective, and don't require dopants to prepare efficient PSCs. Their electrical and optical properties are then investigated theoretically using advanced quantum chemical approaches. The designed molecules showed lower energy gaps and improved optical and optoelectronic characteristics because of the improved phase inversion geometry. The detailed photo-physical and optoelectronic characteristics have been studied using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TD-DFT) calculations. Moreover, we investigated the impact of holes and electrons and the density of states, open-circuit voltage, frontier molecular orbital, transition density matrix, and other structural and photovoltaic characteristics of these materials. Among these, the MK3 molecule possesses the much narrower optical band gap of 1.04 eV and absorbance (λ max) of 684 nm, respectively. In addition, a profound investigation of the MK3/PC61BM blend shows excellent charge transfer at the acceptor-donor interface. Therefore, our proposed technique is necessary for generating appropriate photovoltaic materials for efficient optoelectronic devices and is helpful in further advancing the field.

The fabrication of a hybrid fluorescent nanosensing system and its practical applications via film kits for the selective determination of mercury ions

Heavy metal ions especially mercury exposure have severe toxic effects on living organisms and human health. Therefore, easy, accessible, and accurate determination strategies for the selective specification of mercury ions are essential for numerous disciplines. In the presented paper, new hybrid fluorescent iron oxide nanoparticles labeled with carbazole and triazole units (CT-IONP) were prepared via surface modification for the spectrofluorimetric determination of Hg2+ in environmental samples. The structure of the new sensing system is characterized via various spectroscopic, thermal, and microscopic techniques. Under optimized conditions, the hybrid system is not only used in fully water media but also highly fluorescent which led to the "turn-off" response towards Hg2+ ion in the presence of various competitive species. The presented sensing system was successfully used for the determination of Hg2+ ions in the wide linear working range (0.02-10.00 µmol.L-1) at nanomolar levels, where the limit of detection and quantification were calculated as 7.38 and 22.14 nmol.L-1. Importantly, the practical application of hybrid material was applied by CT-IONP embedded polycaprolactone (PCL) polymer film kits. The bluish color of fabricated film kits was instantly and dramatically turned colorless-dark patterns after the addition of Hg2+ ions, which resulted in convenient and rapid film test kits for selective detection.

A bioactive composite sponge based on biomimetic collagen fibril and oxidized alginate for noncompressible hemorrhage and wound healing

The study focuses on developing a bioactive shape memory sponge to address the urgent demand for short-term rapid hemostasis and long-term wound healing in noncompressible hemorrhage cases. A composite sponge was created by spontaneously generating pores and double cross-linking under mild conditions using biomimetic collagen fibril (BCF) and oxidized alginate (OA) as natural backbone, combined with an inert calcium source (Ca) from CaCO3-GDL slow gelation mechanism. The optimized BCF/OACa (5/5) sponge efficiently absorbed blood after compression and recovered to its original state within 11.2 ± 1.3 s, achieving physical hemostatic mechanism. The composite sponge accelerated physiological coagulation by promoting platelet adhesion and activation through BCF, as well as enhancing endogenous and exogenous hemostatic pathways by Ca2+. Compared to commercial PVA expanding hemostatic sponge, the composite sponge reduced bleeding volume and shortened hemostasis time in rat liver injury pick and perforation wound models. Additionally, it stimulated fibroblast migration and differentiation, thus promoting wound healing. It is biodegradable with low inflammatory response and promotes granulation tissue regeneration. In conclusion, this biocomposite sponge provides multiple hemostatic pathways and biochemical support for wound healing, is biologically safe and easy to fabricate, process and use, with significant potential for clinical translation and application.

All-cellulose composite yarn via welding engineering

Due to the wide range of available raw materials and excellent biocompatibility, all-cellulose composites (ACCs) have received significant attention as a kind of renewable and biodegradable candidate to replace petroleum-based synthetic polymers. However, most current research of ACCs is limited to film and bulk materials. Herein, we present a simple, efficient, and scalable welding method for obtaining green, self-reinforced, high performance all-cellulose composite yarns by partially dissolving and regenerating cellulose yarns with phosphoric acid. The in-situ core-shell structure of the welded yarn results in improved strength (134.6 MPa), friction resistance (8000 cycles), moisture regain (11.89 %), and dyeing properties. Moreover, the regeneration and drying procedure can be optimized to further enhance the strength (190.5 MPa) of the welded yarn. This straightforward welding approach provides a promising and convenient route for manufacturing high-performance bio-based yarn.

Molecularly imprinted polymers in the analysis of chlorogenic acid: A review

Chlorogenic acid, a phenolic compound, is prevalent across various plant species and has been known for its pharmacological advantages. Health care experts have identified chlorogenic acid as a potential biomarker for treatment of a wide range of illnesses. Therefore, achieving efficient extraction and analysis of chlorogenic acid from plants and their products has become essential. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are highly effective adsorbent for the extraction of chlorogenic acid from complex matrices. Currently, there is a lack of comprehensive review article that consolidate the methods utilized for the purification of chlorogenic acid through molecular imprinting. In this context, we have surveyed the common approaches employed in preparing MIPs specifically designed for the analysis of chlorogenic acid, including both conventional and newly developed. This review discusses the advantages, limitations of polymerization techniques and proposed strategies to produce more efficient MIPs for chlorogenic acid enrichment in complex samples. Additionaly, we present advanced imprinting methods for designing MIPs, which improve the adsorption capacity, sensitivity and selectivity towards chlorogenic acid.

Effect of active carbonyl-carboxyl ratio on dynamic Schiff base crosslinking and its modulation of high-performance oxidized starch-chitosan hydrogel by hot extrusion 3D printing

The quest to develop 3D starch-based printing hydrogels for the controlled release of active substances with excellent mechanical and printing properties has gained significant attention. This work introduced a facile method based on crosslinking via Schiff base reaction for preparing bicomponent hydrogels. The method involved the utilization of customizable oxidized starch (OS) and chitosan (CS), enabling superior printing performance through the precise control of various active carbonyl-carboxyl ratios (ACR, 2:1, 1:1, and 2:3, respectively) of OS. OS-CS hydrogel (OSC) with an ACR level of 2:1 (OS-2-y%CS) underwent rearrangement during printing environment, fostering increased Schiff base reaction with a higher crosslinking degree and robust high structural recovery (>95 %). However, with decreasing ACR levels (from 2:1 to 2:3), the printing performance and mechanical strength of printed OSC (POSC) declined due to lower Schiff base bonds and increased phase separation. Compared with printed OS, POS-2-2%CS exhibited a remarkable 1250.52 % increase in tensile strength and a substantial 2424.71 % boost in compressive strength, enhanced shape fidelity and notable self-healing properties. Moreover, POS-2-2%CS exhibited stable diffusive drug release, showing potential application in the pH-responsive release of active substances. Overall, controlling the active carbonyl-carboxyl ratios provided an efficient and manageable approach for preparing high-performance 3D-printed hydrogels.

Creation of fully degradable and mechanically robust poly(4-hydroxybutyrate) films by filling modified starch

Chemically synthesized poly(4-hydroxybutyrate) (P4HB) is a new generation of biomass-derived and degradable semi-crystalline polymer with good comprehensive properties, but high costs limit its application. Starch, as an inexpensive natural polymer, can reduce the cost of P4HB products. However, starch lacks thermoplastic behavior and has poor compatibility with P4HB, thus its extensive use will inevitably impair the mechanical properties of P4HB. In this study, the ball-milling starch grafting process is adopted, which can simultaneously solve the two major deficiencies of starch, and the prepared ball-milling starch-g-polycaprolactone (BSt-g-PCL) has thermoplasticity and better compatibility with P4HB. BSt-g-PCL can melt near 55 °C, and the interweaving of its molecular chains with P4HB reduces the binding energy (Einteraction) of both, making the phase interface blurred or even disappear. Therefore, the elongation at break retention (REB) of P4HB/BSt-g-PCL can increase from 37.1 % to 74.3 % compared to P4HB/starch at the same filling (70 Phr). Additionally, BSt-g-PCL can exert the effect of accelerating P4HB degradation and still make it maintain excellent anti-aging ability. The ball-milling starch graft process provides a simple and effective method for the preparation of inexpensive fully biodegradable P4HB composite films with excellent mechanical properties.

Rational design of Fe, N co-doped porous carbon derived from conjugated microporous polymer as an electrocatalytic platform for oxygen reduction reaction

Porous iron-nitrogen-doped carbons (FeNC) offer a great platform for construction of cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts in fuel cells. However, challenges still remain regarding with the collapse of carbon-skeleton during pyrolysis, uneven distribution of active sites and aggregation of metal atoms. In this work, we synthesized Fe, N co-doped conjugated microporous polymer (FeN-CMP) through a facile bottom-up strategy using 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene and iron-chelated 3,8-dibromo-1,10-phenanthroline as monomers, ensuring the uniform coordination of N with Fe element in network. Then, the resulting FeN-CMP was treated by pyrolysis without structural collapse to obtain porous FeNC electrocatalyst for ORR. The most active catalyst was fabricated under 900 °C, which exhibits remarkable ORR activity in alkaline medium with half-wave potential of 0.796 V (18 mV and 105 mV positive deviation from the commercial Pt/C catalyst and post-doping catalyst), high selectivity with nearly 4e- transfer process and excellent methanol tolerance. Our study first developed porous FeNC electrocatalysts derived from Fe, N-anchoring CMPs based on pre-functionalization of monomers, which exhibits great potential as an alternative to commercial Pt/C catalyst for ORR, and provides a feasible strategy of developing multi-atoms doping catalysts for energy storage and conversion as well as heterogeneous catalysis.

Effects of side-chain lengths on the structure and properties of anhydrides modified starch micelles: Experimental and DPD simulation studies

Anhydride-modified starch micelles have great potential in the delivery of hydrophobic guest molecules. This study aimed to experimentally explore the effects of side-chain lengths on the structure and properties of anhydride-modified starch micelles, and to visualize the self-assembly and loading process of these micelles through Dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations. Starch micelles could only form when the carbon chain length exceeded four. The highly hydrophobic C18 starch micelle exhibited the minimum particle size (65 nm) and maximum loading capability (59.10 μg/mg). For each addition carbon atom in the anhydride side chains, the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of starch micelles decreased average of 1.79 %. Thermodynamic results showed that the micellization was an entropy-dominated driven process, and longer carbon chains enhanced the stability of starch micelles. DPD results showed that the starch chains formed the small clusters then spherical aggregates and finally core-shell structure spherical micelle. Curcumin was loaded into micelles by adjoint aggregation-micellization-adsorption mechanism. Overall, this study provides microscopic insight into the micellization and drug-loading mechanisms for anhydrides modified starch micelles.

Barnacle inspired strategy combined with solvent exchange for enhancing wet adhesion of hydrogels to promote seawater-immersed wound healing

Hydrogels are promising materials for wound protection, but in wet, or underwater environments, the hydration layer and swelling of hydrogels can seriously reduce adhesion and limit their application. In this study, inspired by the structural characteristics of strong barnacle wet adhesion and combined with solvent exchange, a robust wet adhesive hydrogel (CP-Gel) based on chitosan and 2-phenoxyethyl acrylate was obtained by breaking the hydration layer and resisting swelling. As a result, CP-Gel exhibited strong wet adhesion to various interfaces even underwater, adapted to joint movement and skin twisting, resisted sustained rushing water, and sealed damaged organs. More importantly, on-demand detachment and controllable adhesion were achieved by promoting swelling. In addition, CP-Gel with good biosafety significantly promotes seawater-immersed wound healing and is promising for use in water-contact wound care, organ sealing, and marine emergency rescue.

Anthraquinones-based photocatalysis: A comprehensive review

In recent years, there has been significant interest in photocatalytic technologies utilizing semiconductors and photosensitizers responsive to solar light, owing to their potential for energy and environmental applications. Current efforts are focused on enhancing existing photocatalysts and developing new ones tailored for environmental uses. Anthraquinones (AQs) serve as redox-active electron transfer mediators and photochemically active organic photosensitizers, effectively addressing common issues such as low light utilization and carrier separation efficiency found in conventional semiconductors. AQs offer advantages such as abundant raw materials, controlled preparation, excellent electron transfer capabilities, and photosensitivity, with applications spanning the energy, medical, and environmental sectors. Despite their utility, comprehensive reviews on AQs-based photocatalytic systems in environmental contexts are lacking. In this review, we thoroughly describe the photochemical properties of AQs and their potential applications in photocatalysis, particularly in addressing key environmental challenges like clean energy production, antibacterial action, and pollutant degradation. However, AQs face limitations in practical photocatalytic applications due to their low electrical conductivity and solubility-related secondary contamination. To mitigate these issues, the design and synthesis of graphene-immobilized AQs are highlighted as a solution to enhance practical photocatalytic applications. Additionally, future research directions are proposed to deepen the understanding of AQs' theoretical mechanisms and to provide practical applications for wastewater treatment. This review aims to facilitate mechanistic studies and practical applications of AQs-based photocatalytic technologies and to improve understanding of these technologies.

Microstructure induction of quaternary ammonium chitosan microcapsules based on magnetic field and study of their aroma release

Traditional pressure-sensitive microcapsules used in textiles face challenges of insufficient environmental friendliness in the production process and uncontrollable fragrance release. To address this issue, this study utilized quaternary ammonium chitosan and silica as wall materials to develop a magnetic aromatic microcapsule. The microstructure of the microcapsules was controlled by magnetic field induction, and its evolution pattern was investigated. After magnetic field induction, the microcapsules exhibited a trend of evolving from spherical to asymmetrical shapes, accompanied by significant changes in mechanical properties. Asymmetrical microcapsules showed higher adhesion and lower stiffness. When applied to cotton textiles, the cotton textiles treated with asymmetrical microcapsules released 63.40 % of lavender essential oil after 200 friction cycles, representing an 11.3 % improvement in release efficiency compared to regular microcapsules, indicating better mechanical stimulus responsiveness. Additionally, in antibacterial tests, aromatic cotton exhibited a 96.52 % inhibition ratio against Escherichia coli. In summary, this study explores methods to adjust the mechanical properties of microcapsules and the relationship between mechanical properties and microstructure, providing a new approach for functional textiles.

Starch chain-length distributions affect the processing and digestion characteristics of proso millet starch

Starch chain-length distributions play a key role in regulating the processing and digestion characteristics of proso millet starch. Waxy proso millet starch has higher endothermic enthalpy (13.06-16.73 J/g) owing to its higher relative crystallinity (27.83%-32.04%), while nonwaxy proso millet starch has lower peak viscosity (1.0630-1.1930 Pa∙s) and stronger viscoelasticity owing to its higher amylose content (21.72%-24.34%). Non-waxy proso millet starch exhibited two different digestion phases and its resistant starch content (18.37%-20.80%) was higher than waxy proso millet starch. Correlation analysis showed proso millet starch with longer amylopectin B1 chains and more amylopectin B2 chains exhibited excellent thermal ability and retrograde resistance, whereas proso millet starch with shorter and more amylose medium/long-chains not only reduced the digestion rate and increased the resistant starch content but also exhibited stronger viscoelasticity and excellent retrogradation properties. These results could provide more insights into efficient utilization of proso millet starch.

Preparation of fluorescent polyurethane microspheres and their applications as reusable sensor for 4-nitrophenol detection and as microplastics model for visualizing polyurethane in cells and zebrafish

Fluorescent microspheres are of significant interests due to their wide applications in biotechnology fields. However, their preparation presents several challenges, such as the need for dye labeling, the complexity of materials and often sophisticated preparation conditions. Here a simple process for hydrophilic and crosslinked polyurethane (CPU) microspheres, with carboxyl groups on the surface via one-step precipitation polymerization in 40 min, is presented. The microsphere size is easily adjusted by varying experimental conditions. CPU microspheres exhibit high thermal and pH stability with good redispersibility in water, and emit fluorescence without any modification or dye labeling. The emission mechanism is discussed. CPU microspheres are used as fluorescent probe to detect 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) based on their emission in UV light region, with excellent selectivity and sensitivity. In addition, they are reusable with detection limit unchanged after 7 cycles of reuses, a significant feature of this work. The mechanism of fluorescence detection is thoroughly explored and ascribed to the internal filtration effect. Based on the emission in visible light region, CPU microspheres are used as a model of PU microplastics (MPs) to visualize their biodistribution in HeLa and macrophage cells, as well as in zebrafish larvae, providing a reliable tracer for the visualization and tracking of PU MPs in organisms.

Multi-component ion equilibria and transport in ion-exchange membranes

At the interface between an ion-exchange membrane and a multi-electrolyte solution, charged species redistribute themselves to minimize the free energy of the system. In this paper, we explore the Donnan equilibrium of membranes with quaternary electrolyte (Na+/Mg2+/K+/Ca2+/Cl-) solutions, experimentally. The data was used to calculate the ion activity coefficients for six commercial cation-exchange membranes (CEMs). After setting one of the activity coefficients to an arbitrary value, we used the remaining (N-1) activity coefficients as fitting parameters to describe the equilibrium concentrations of (N) ionic species with a mean relative error of 3 %. At increasing solution ionic strengths, the equivalent ion fractions of monovalent counter-ions inside the membrane increased at the expense of the multivalent ones in alignment with the Donnan equilibrium theory. The fitted activity coefficients were employed in a transport model that simulated a Donnan dialysis experiment involving all four cations simultaneously. The arbitrary value assigned to one activity coefficient affects the calculated Donnan potential at the membrane interface. Nevertheless, this arbitrary value does not affect the prediction of the ion concentrations inside the membrane and consequently does not affect the modeled ion fluxes.

Highly branched thermoresponsive polysaccharide derivative in water. Partly substituted highly branched cyclic dextrin ethylcarbamate

A thermoresponsive highly branched polysaccharide derivative was revealed from commercially available highly branched cyclic dextrin (HBCD), originally synthesized from amylopectin. Eight samples of partially substituted ethyl carbamate derivatives of HBCD (HEC) were prepared with a degree of substitution DS ranging from 0.27 to 1.46. Three samples with DS = 0.88, 1.05, and 1.22 showed LCST type phase separation in water. The intrinsic viscosity and form factor in water were typical of the hyperbranched structure. The intermolecular interactions between HEC and iodine or 1-anilinonaphthalene-8-sulfonic acid (ANS) were appreciably different from those of the linear analog (AEC), suggesting that the locally bent helical conformation of highly branched HEC chains has a different interaction with small molecules. The phase diagram of HEC-water systems was accidentally similar to that of the linear chain with the same molar mass and DS, although the one phase region of the branched polymer chain-poor solvent system is usually wider than that of the corresponding linear chain. This is likely due to the lower hydration nature of the polymer segment of HEC chains than that of the corresponding linear chain.

In situ formed aldehyde-modified hyaluronic acid hydrogel with polyelectrolyte complexes of aldehyde-modified chondroitin sulfate and gelatin: An approach for minocycline delivery

Polysaccharides like hyaluronan (HA) and chondroitin sulfate (CS) are native of the brain's extracellular matrix crucial for myelination and brain maturation. Despite extensive research on HA and CS as drug delivery systems (DDS), their high water solubility limits their application as drug carriers. This study introduces an injectable DDS using aldehyde-modified hyaluronic acid (HAOX) hydrogel containing polyelectrolyte complexes (PEC) formed with calcium, gelatin, and either CS or aldehyde-modified CS (CSOX) to deliver minocycline for Multiple Sclerosis therapy. PECs with CSOX enable covalent crosslinking to HAOX, creating immobilized PECs (HAOX_PECOX), while those with CS remain unbound (HAOX_PECS). The in situ forming DDS can be administered via a 20 G needle, with rapid gelation preventing premature leakage. The system integrates into an implanted device for minocycline release through either Fickian or anomalous diffusion, depending on PEC immobilization. HAOX_PECOX reduced burst release by 88 %, with a duration of 127 h for 50 % release. The DDS exhibited an elastic modulus of 3800 Pa and a low swelling ratio (0-1 %), enabling precise control of minocycline release kinetics. Released minocycline reduced IL-6 secretion in the Whole Blood Monocytes Activation Test, suggesting that DDS formation may not alter the biological activity of the loaded drug.

Metal complexes of backbone-halogenated imidazol-2-ylidenes

In this manuscript, literature reports on mono- and di-halogen (F, Cl, Br, and I) substituted at positions 4 or/and 4,5 imidazol-2-ylidene (NHC) metal complexes are discussed: particularly, their structural diversity with various metals (groups 6-13), important physicochemical properties, catalytic and medicinal/biological applications are reviewed. To our knowledge, there are no literature reports on group 4 and 5 metal complexes with this type of NHC ligands. Halogenated imidazol-2-ylidene metal complexes deserve special attention because halogens are the classic electron donating groups (mesomerically) in conjugated aromatic/heteroaromatic ring systems, but electron withdrawing inductively. However, they exhibit a significant electron withdrawing inductive effect, thus providing unique electronic properties. This is important for fine tuning of σ-donor abilities of the "carbenic" carbon of imidazol-2-ylidenes, which directly affect catalytic performance of their metal complexes. Other applications, advantages, and disadvantages of halogenated vs. unsubstituted imidazol-2-ylidene metal complexes are critically analyzed and summarized in this review.

Advancing plant cell wall modelling: Atomistic insights into cellulose, disordered cellulose, and hemicelluloses - A review

The complexity of plant cell walls on different hierarchical levels still impedes the detailed understanding of biosynthetic pathways, interferes with processing in industry and finally limits applicability of cellulose materials. While there exist many challenges to readily accessing these hierarchies at (sub-) angström resolution, the development of advanced computational methods has the potential to unravel important questions in this field. Here, we summarize the contributions of molecular dynamics simulations in advancing the understanding of the physico-chemical properties of natural fibres. We aim to present a comprehensive view of the advancements and insights gained from molecular dynamics simulations in the field of carbohydrate polymers research. The review holds immense value as a vital reference for researchers seeking to undertake atomistic simulations of plant cell wall constituents. Its significance extends beyond the realm of molecular modeling and chemistry, as it offers a pathway to develop a more profound comprehension of plant cell wall chemistry, interactions, and behavior. By delving into these fundamental aspects, the review provides invaluable insights into future perspectives for exploration. Researchers within the molecular modeling and carbohydrates community can greatly benefit from this resource, enabling them to make significant strides in unraveling the intricacies of plant cell wall dynamics.

An overview of cellulose aerogels and foams for oil sorption: Preparation, modification, and potential of 3D printing

Sorption is one of the most efficient methods to remediate the increasing oil spill incidents, but the currently available absorbents are inadequate to tackle such a global threat. Recently, numerous researchers have attempted to develop sustainable oil sorbents. Cellulose aerogels and foams, a type of lightweight porous material with excellent sorption performance, are one of the most promising candidates. Significant progress has been made in the past decade towards the development of cellulose porous materials as effective oil sorbents, with improvements in their oil sorption capacity, reusability, and enhanced multifunctionality, indicating their potential for oil spill remediation. This article reviews recent reports and provides a comprehensive overview of the preparation and modification strategies for cellulose porous materials, with a specific emphasis on their oil sorption performance and structure control. We also focus on the burgeoning 3D printing technology within this field, summarizing the latest advances with a discussion of the potential for using 3D printing to customize and optimize the structure of cellulose porous materials. Lastly, this review addresses current limitations and outlines future directions for development.

Multi-scale microstructural construction in ultralight graphene aerogels enables super elasticity and unprecedented durability for impact protection materials

Ultralight graphene aerogels have gained extensive recognition in the impact protection field. However, attaining both elasticity and durability at low material density is challenging due to their intrinsic conflicts. Inspired by the mantis ootheca, we present a simultaneous improvement in the elasticity, durability, and density restrictions of ultralight graphene aerogels via constructing a multiscale honeycomb microstructure (MHM) within the graphene skeleton. This approach enables resulting graphene aerogel to achieve a strength per unit volume of 284.6 cm3 mg-1, the ability to recover its shape within 10 ms after an impact at 3.569 m/s, and maintain 97.2 % of its sample height after 20,000 cycles at 90 % strain. The operand analyses and calculation results reveal that the MHM structure facilitates this aerogel's dual-stage stress transfer pathway. Initially, the macroscale honeycomb structure (millimeter-scale) of the graphene aerogels bear and transmit stress to the surrounding regions, followed by the microscale honeycomb structure (micron-scale) deformation to convert stress kinetic energy into elastic potential energy. This two-stage stress transition mechanism of the MHM structure can effectively mitigate excessive local stress and suppress strain localization, thus providing remarkable elasticity and durability. Ultimately, the obtained graphene aerogel demonstrates promising applications as a fall height detection device and impact protective material.

Study on the fabrication and controlled release behavior of N-Acetylneuraminic acid-loaded hydrogels stabilized by gelatin/whey protein isolate

Gelatin (GEL), pectin (PEC), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and whey protein isolate (WPI) were employed to formulate hydrogels for stabilizing N-Acetylneuraminic Acid (NeuAc). GEL/WPI-NeuAc hydrogels, irrespective of the ratio, exhibited a flexible and smooth surface with a continuous three-dimensional network structure internally. Porosity of the three types of hydrogels increased from 3.69% to 86.92% (GEL/WPI), 41.67% (PEC/WPI), and 87.62% (CMC/WPI), rendering them suitable as carriers for NeuAc encapsulation. The dynamic swelling behavior of all hydrogels followed Schott's second-order kinetics model. The degradation performance of GEL, PEC, and CMC/WPI-NeuAc hydrogels was optimal at a 5: 5 ratio, with degradation rates of 80.39 ± 1.26%, 82.38 ± 1.96%, and 81.39 ± 1.57%, respectively. GEL, PEC, CMC/WPI-NeuAc hydrogels demonstrated decreased release rates of 44.56%, 31.04%, and 41.26%, respectively, compared to free NeuAc, post gastric digestion. The present investigation suggests the potential of GEL/WPI hydrogels as effective carriers for delivering NeuAc encapsulation.

Effect of cross-linking density on the rheological behavior of ultra-soft chitosan microgels at the oil-water interface

In this paper, microgels with uniform particle size were prepared by physically cross-linking the hydrophobically modified chitosan (h-CS) with sodium phytate (SP). The effects of cross-linking density on the interfacial adsorption kinetics, viscoelasticity, stress relaxation, and micorheological properties of the hydrophobically modified chitosan microgels (h-CSMs) at the oil-water interface were extensively investigated by the dilatational rheology, compressional rheology, and particle tracing microrheology. The results were correlated with the particle size, morphology, and elasticity of the microgels characterized by dynamic light scattering and atomic force microscopy. It was found that with the increase of cross-linking density, the h-CSMs changed from a polymer-like state to ultra-soft fussy spheres with higher elastic modulus. The compression isotherms demonstrated multi-stage increase caused by the interaction between the shells and that between the cores of the microgels successively. As the increase of cross-linking density, the h-CSMs diffused slower to the oil-water interface, but demonstrating faster permeation adsorption and rearrangement at the oil-water interface, finally forming interfacial layers of higher viscoelastic modulus due to the core-core interaction. Both the initial tension relaxation and the microgel rearrangement after interface expansion became faster as the microgel elasticity increased. The interfacial microrheology demonstrated dynamic caging effect caused by neighboring microgels. This article provides a more comprehensive understanding of the behaviors of polysaccharide microgels at the oil-water interface.

Cryo-electron tomography study of the evolution of wormlike micelles to saturated networks and perforated vesicles

HYPOTHESIS

The formation of micellar aggregates and the changes in their morphology are crucial for numerous practical applications of surfactants. However, a proper structural characterization of complicated micellar nanostructures remains a challenge. This paper demonstrates the advances of cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) in revealing the structural characteristics that accompany the evolution of surfactant aggregates.

EXPERIMENTS

By using cryo-ET in combination with cryo-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM), small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), and rheometry, studies were carried out on a model system composed of zwitterionic and nonionic surfactants. In this system, the molecular packing parameter was increased gradually by increasing the molar fraction of nonionic surfactant.

FINDINGS

A series of structural transformations was observed: linear wormlike micelles (WLMs) → branched WLMs → saturated network of multiconnected WLMs → perforated vesicles (stomatosomes). The transformations occur through an increase in the number of branches at the expense of cylindrical subchains and semispherical endcaps. Exponential distribution of subchains length was confirmed experimentally for multiconnected saturated networks. The stomatosomes were formed when the length of subchains becomes much shorter than the persistence length, causing the three-dimensional (3D) structure to transform into a two-dimensional (2D) membrane. This work identifies the mechanism of the structural changes, which can be further used to design various surfactant self-assemblies.

Biocompatible hydrogels based on quaternary ammonium salts of chitosan with high antimicrobial activity as biocidal agents for disinfection

The paper reports new hydrogels based on quaternary ammonium salts of chitosan designed as biocidal products. The chitosan derivative was crosslinked with salicylaldehyde via reversible imine bonds and supramolecular self-assemble to give dynamic hydrogels which respond to environmental stimuli. The crosslinking mechanism was demonstrated by 1H NMR and FTIR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction and polarized light microscopy. The hydrogel nature, self-healing and thixotropy were proved by rheological investigation and visual observation, and their morphology was assessed by scanning electron microscopy. The relevant properties for application as biocidal products, such as swelling, dissolution, bioadhesiveness, antimicrobial activity and ex-vivo hemocompatibility and in vivo local toxicity and biocompatibility on experimental mice were measured and analyzed in relationship with the imination degree and the influence of each component. It was found that the hydrogels are superabsorbent, have good adhesivity to skin and various surfaces and antimicrobial activity against relevant gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, while being hemocompatible and biocompatible. Besides, the hydrogels are easily biodegraded in soil. All these properties recommend the studied hydrogels as ecofriendly biocidal agents for living tissues and surfaces, but also open the perspectives of their use as platform for in vivo applications in tissue engineering, wound healing, or drug delivery systems.

Structure and rheology of the polysaccharides from Schizymenia dubyi: Isolation of an unusual glucurono-carrageenan

The system of polysaccharides from Schizymenia dubyi (Nemastomatales) was investigated. It contains a mixture of hybrid dl galactans (SH-S) and carrageenan-like polysaccharides, which were separated by means of precipitation with KCl at high concentrations. The structural features of the carrageenan-like fraction (SH-I) were investigated by methylation analysis, desulfation, uronic acid reduction, and NMR spectroscopy. It was concluded that the structure has the typical alternance α-(1 → 3), β-(1 → 4) of d-galactose units, with most of the 3-linked units sulfated in O-2 (and some in O-4), and most of the 4-linked units sulfated in O-3, and substituted in O-2 by single stubs of β-d-glucuronic acid (partly sulfated in each of the three available positions). This substituent has been only seldom found in red seaweed galactans. Rheological studies of 5 % and 10 % w/v SH, SH-S and SH-I aqueous systems, either without ions, or in KCl or CaCl2 solution gave thickening behaviors. Their random coil conformations justify the pseudoplastic behavior observed in the viscosity versus shear rate curves. As SH-S and SH-I are both contained in SH, an interpenetrating network could form in SH between the glucurono-carrageenan and the agaran, as inferred from the mechanical spectra recorded in water, especially with potassium ion.

Highly sulfonated poly ether ether ketone chelated with Cu2+ as a proton exchange membrane at sub-zero temperatures

Improving the proton conductivity (σ) of proton exchange membranes at low temperatures is very important for expanding their application areas. Here, sulfonated poly ether ether ketone (SPEEK) membranes were prepared with different sulfonation degrees, and its maximum ion exchange capacity is 3.15 mmol/g for 10 h at 60 °C. Highly sulfonated SPEEK membrane exhibits ultra-high water uptake and excellent proton conductivity of 0.074 S/cm at -25 °C due to its abundant -SO3H. Nevertheless, its high swelling ratio and low mechanical strength are not conducive to the practical application of the membrane. Luckily, by employing the chelation of Cu2+ with -SO3- on the SPEEK chain, Cu2+-coordinated SPEEK membranes were prepared, and they not only retain high -SO3H content but also possess robust mechanical properties and good dimensional stability compared to pristine SPEEK membrane. Meanwhile, the σ of the SPEEK-Cu membrane reaches 0.054 S/cm at -25 °C, and its fuel cell maximum power (Wmax) reaches 0.42 W/cm2 at -10 °C, demonstrating superior low-temperature performance in comparison to other reported materials. Particularly, water states in the prepared membranes are quantified by low-temperature differential scanning calorimetry. Because much more water bound to the plentiful -SO3H and Cu2+ inside the membrane endows it with anti-freezing performance, the decay of the σ and the Wmax for the SPEEK-Cu membrane is retarded at sub-zero temperatures. It is envisioned that composite membranes comprising metal ions such as Cu2+-SPEEK have a high potential for sub-zero fuel cell applications.

Effect of particle stiffness and surface properties on the non-linear viscoelasticity of dense microgel suspensions

HYPOTHESIS

Particle surface chemistry and internal softness are two fundamental parameters in governing the mechanical properties of dense colloidal suspensions, dictating structure and flow, therefore of interest from materials fabrication to processing.

EXPERIMENTS

Here, we modulate softness by tuning the crosslinker content of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) microgels, and we adjust their surface properties by co-polymerization with polyethylene glycol chains, controlling adhesion, friction and fuzziness. We investigate the distinct effects of these parameters on the entire mechanical response from restructuring to complete fluidization of jammed samples at varying packing fractions under large-amplitude oscillatory shear experiments, and we complement rheological data with colloidal-probe atomic force microscopy to unravel variations in the particles' surface properties.

FINDINGS

Our results indicate that surface properties play a fundamental role at smaller packings; decreasing adhesion and friction at contact causes the samples to yield and fluidify in a lower deformation range. Instead, increasing softness or fuzziness has a similar effect at ultra-high densities, making suspensions able to better adapt to the applied shear and reach complete fluidization over a larger deformation range. These findings shed new light on the single-particle parameters governing the mechanical response of dense suspensions subjected to deformation, offering synthetic approaches to design materials with tailored mechanical properties.

From farm to function: Exploring new possibilities with jute nanocellulose applications

Recent scientific interest has surged in the application of bioresources within nanotechnology, primarily because of their eco-friendly nature, wide availability, and cost-effectiveness. Jute is globally recognized as the second most prevalent source of natural cellulose fibers, and it produces a significant quantity of jute sticks as a byproduct. Nanocellulose (NC), which includes cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), exhibits exceptional properties such as high strength, toughness, crystallinity, thermal stability, and stiffness. These attributes enable its versatile use across various sectors. The extensive surface areas and abundant hydroxyl groups of nanocellulose allow for diverse surface modifications, facilitating the design of advanced functional materials. This comprehensive review provides an overview of recent advancements in the synthesis, characterization, and potential applications of nanocellulose derived from jute. As a versatile natural fiber, jute holds immense potential across various research domains, including nanocellulose synthesis, scaffold fabrication, nanocarbon material preparation, life sciences, electronics and energy storage devices, drug delivery systems, nanomaterial synthesis, food packaging and paper industries. Additionally, its use extends to polymeric nanocomposites, sensors, and coatings. This study summarizes the extensive utilization of jute, emphasizing its versatility and potential across diverse research fields.

Molecular changes and interactions of wheat flour biopolymers during bread-making: Implications to upcycle bread waste into bioplastics

This study aims to understand the molecular and supramolecular transformations of wheat endosperm biopolymers during bread-making, and their implications to fabricate self-standing films from stale white bread. A reduction in the Mw of amylopectin (51.8 × 106 vs 425.1 × 106 g/mol) and water extractable arabinoxylans WEAX (1.79 × 105 vs 7.63 × 105 g/mol), and a decrease in amylose length (245 vs 748 glucose units) was observed after bread-baking. The chain length distribution of amylopectin and the arabinose-to-xylose (A/X) ratio of WEAX remained unaffected during bread-making, suggesting that heat- or/and shear-induced chain scission is the mechanism responsible for molecular fragmentation. Bread-making also resulted in more insoluble cell wall residue, featured by water unextractable arabinoxylan of lower A/X and Mw, along with the formation of a gluten network. Flexible and transparent films with good light-blocking performance (<30 % transmittance) and DPPH-radical scavenging capacity (~8.5 %) were successfully developed from bread and flour. Bread films exhibited lower hygroscopicity, tensile strength (2.7 vs 8.5 MPa) and elastic modulus (67 vs 501 MPa) than flour films, while having a 6-fold higher elongation at break (10.0 vs 61.2 %). This study provides insights into the changes in wheat biopolymers during bread-making and sets a precedent for using stale bread as composite polymeric materials.

Modulation of wetting state switching of droplets on superhydrophobic microstructured surfaces by external electric field

HYPOTHESIS

Electrowetting on conventional dielectrics requires direct fluid-electrode contact to generate strong electric fields at the three-phase contact line to modulate the wetting. Since the electric field alters wetting, the modulation of wetting can be achieved by applying an external electric field through insulated electrodes, preventing the liquid from contacting the electrodes.

EXPERIMENT

A simple and efficient method for non-contact between the fluid and the electrode external electric field modulation of fluid wetting was proposed. The switching ability of droplets on microgroove surfaces from Cassie-Baxter to Wenzel wetting state under an external electric field was used to drive and quantify the relationship between wetting, contact angle, and the applied voltage.

FINDINGS

Applying an external electric field modulates the wetting of deionized water, ionic liquids, and high-viscosity liquids on microgrooves. The wetting degree of liquid can be controlled by adjusting the external voltage parameters. The finite element simulations revealed that the Maxwell force drove this process. The effects of substrate size and liquid properties on wetting behavior were also examined. Post-application cross-sectional imaging showed the formation of a conformal interface, highlighting the relevance of the proposed method in advanced adaptive shape fabrication and microfluidic control, among other applications.
