Abstract
A novel type of primary amine thiourea organocatalysts derived from 1,2-diaminocyclohexane and 9-amino (9-deoxy) cinchona alkaloid was developed into asymmetric Michael addition of malonates to enones. A series of cyclic and acyclic enones could react very well with different malonates in the presence of 4 with 0.5-10 mol % catalyst loading affording chiral Michael adducts with excellent yields and ee values.

Abstract
A new class of dehydroabietic amine-substituted primary amine-thiourea bifunctional catalysts were designed and synthesized. The doubly stereocontrolled organocatalytic conjugate addition of a variety of heterocycles-bearing ketones to nitroalkenes was investigated for the first time, affording (S)- or (R)-gamma-nitro heteroaromatic ketones with excellent enantioselectivities (up to ee >99%). Furthermore, the nearly optically pure gamma-nitro heteroaromatic ketones can be readily transformed into chiral pyrrolidine carboxylic acids.

Abstract
A new bifunctional organocatalyst with a novel structural and functional motif has been developed. This bifunctional sulfonamide organocatalyst was used in the conjugate addition of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds (13) to β-nitrostyrenes (12). Yields up to 91% and enantiomeric excesses up to 79% were obtained in this reaction. This catalyst activates both 13 via its basic moiety and 12 through hydrogen bonding.

Abstract
Thioureas represent the dominant platform for hydrogen bond promoted asymmetric catalysts. A large number of reactions, reported in scores of publications, have been successfully promoted by chiral thioureas. The present paper reports the use of squaramides as a highly effective new scaffold for the development of chiral hydrogen bond donor catalysts. Squaramide catalysts are very simple to prepare. The (-)-cinchonine modified squaramide (5), easily prepared through a two-step process from methyl squarate, was shown to be an effective catalyst, even at catalyst loadings as low as 0.1 mol%, for the conjugate addition reactions of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds to beta-nitrostyrenes. The addition products were obtained in high yields and excellent enantioselectivities.

Abstract
The impact of cooperativity between intermolecular interactions is demonstrated by the molecular self-recognition properties of highly enantioselective epi-cinchona bifunctional thiourea organocatalysts. Low-temperature NMR experiments in inert solvents have revealed two sets of nonequivalent resonances in equal population for thiourea-modified members of the epi-quinine and epi-quinidine families. In solution, the predominance of an asymmetric (C1) dimeric self-assembly with noteworthy structural motifs became evident: simultaneous intra- and intermolecular thiourea hydrogen bonding and a CH/pi interaction were observed. Both the stereochemical and the diverse conformational features of the system favor the observed quinoline T-shaped aromatic pi-pi stacking interaction. The structure findings are supported by quantitative proton-proton distance data that were available from NOE buildup curves. The 3D structure of the dimeric assembly has been modeled in agreement with the H-H distance restraints. Owing to the geometrical preference associated with the dimerization process, the self-assembled bifunctional system is interpreted as a charge-transfer complex with the potential for catalyst self-activation.

Abstract
An efficient nitro-Mannich/lactamization cascade of gamma-nitro esters with cyclic imines for the preparation of architecturally complex multicyclic piperidinone ring-containing structures has been developed. The reaction is broad in scope and stereoselective and may be coupled to an enantioselective nitroolefin Michael addition reaction as part of a highly enantio- and diastereoselective multicomponent process.

Abstract
Bifunctional urea-based cinchona alkaloid derivatives have been shown to promote highly efficient DKR reactions of azalactones using an alcohol nucleophile. The optimum catalyst is remarkably insensitive to the steric bulk of the amino acid residue, allowing alanine-, methionine-, and phenylalanine-derived azalactones to undergo DKR with unprecedented levels of enantioselectivity using a synthetic catalyst. The first DKR of these substrates by thiols and the highly enantioselective desymmetrization of a meso-glutaric anhydride by thiolysis are also reported.
