Microbial and plant derived biomass for removal of heavy metals from wastewater

Removal of Cu(II) and Pb(II) by Pithophora oedogonia: sorption, desorption and repeated use of the biomass

Maximum sorption of Cu(II) and Pb(II) by dried filamentous green alga Pithophora oedogonia occurred at pH 4.5 and 5.0, respectively. Chemical pretreatment could not appreciably enhance the metal sorption ability of the biomass. HCl and EDTA desorbed 92-96% of the sorbed metal from the metal-loaded biomass. Sorption and desorption of both the test metals were very rapid attaining an equilibrium within 15 min. The time course data of both the processes fitted well to the pseudo-first and the pseudo-second-order Lagergren kinetic models with r2> or =0.979. The isotherm equilibrium of Cu(II) and Pb(II) followed the Redlich-Peterson and Sips model very well with r2> or =0.991. The sorption of Cu(II) and Pb(II) at varying biomass doses could be well defined by linear and hyperbolic decrease, respectively. The regenerated biomass of Pithophora has better reusability for Pb(II) than for Cu(II). A good mechanical strength of Pithophora biomass was apparent as only 10-15% loss of biomass occurred at the end of the fifth cycle.

Nanotechnology and water treatment: applications and emerging opportunities

Nanotechnology, the engineering and art of manipulating matter at the nanoscale (1-100 nm), offers the potential of novel nanomaterials for treatment of surface water, groundwater, and wastewater contaminated by toxic metal ions, organic and inorganic solutes, and microorganisms. Due to their unique activity toward recalcitrant contaminants and application flexibility, many nanomaterials are under active research and development. Accordingly, literature about current research on different nanomaterials (nanostructured catalytic membranes, nanosorbents, nanocatalysts, and bioactive nanoparticles) and their application in water treatment, purification and disinfection is reviewed in this article. Moreover, knowledge regarding toxicological effects of engineered nanomaterials on humans and the environment is presented.

Metal biosorption capability of Cupriavidus taiwanensis and its effects on heavy metal removal by nodulated Mimosa pudica

A novel metal biosorption system consisting of the symbiotic combination of an indigenous metal-resistant rhizobial strain, Cupriavidus taiwanensis TJ208, and its host plant Mimosa pudica has been developed for the removal of heavy-metal pollutants. Free-living C. taiwanensis TJ208 cells were able to adsorb 50.1, 19.0, and 19.6 mg/g of Pb, Cu, and Cd, respectively. After nodulation via inoculation with strain TJ208, the metal uptake ability of M. pudica markedly increased, as the nodulated M. pudica displayed a high metal uptake capacity (qmax) of 485, 25, and 43 mg/g, respectively, which is 86, 12, and 70% higher than that of nodule-free plants. Moreover, with TJ208 nodules, the M. pudica plant also displayed a 71, 81, and 33% enhancement in metal adsorption efficiency (eta) for Pb, Cu, and Cd, respectively. The nodulation appeared to give the greatest enhancing effect on the uptake of Pb, which is consistent with the preference of metal adsorption ability of TJ208. This seems to indicate the crucial role that the rhizobial strain may play in stimulating metal uptake of the nodulated plant. Furthermore, the results show that metal accumulation in the nodulated plant mainly occurred in the roots, accounting for 65-95% of total metal uptake. In contrast, the nodules and the shoots only contributed to 3-12 and 2-23% of total metal uptake, respectively. Nevertheless, the specific adsorption capacity of nodules is comparable to that of the roots. Hence, this work demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of using the nodulated plants to promote phyto-removal of heavy metals from the polluted environment as well as to restrict the metal contaminants in the unharmful region of the plant.

Tolerance and prospection of phytoremediator woody species of Cd, Pb, Cu and Cr

High concentrations of Cd, Pb, Cu and Cr can cause harmful effects to the environment. These highly toxic pollutants constitute a risk for aquatic and terrestrial life. They are associated with diverse bioavailable geochemical fractions, like the water-soluble fraction and the exchangeable fraction, and non-available fractions like those associated with the crystalline net of clays and silica minerals. Depending upon their chemical and physical properties we can distinguish different mechanisms of metal toxicity in plants, such as production of reactive oxygen species from auto-oxidation, blocking and/or displacement of essential functional groups or metallic ions of biomolecules, changes in the permeability of cellular membranes, reactions of sulphydryl groups with cations, affinity for reactions with phosphate groups and active groups of ADP or ATP, substitution of essential ions, induction of chromosomal anomalies and decrease of the cellular division rate. However, some plant species have developed tolerance or resistance to these metals naturally. Such evolution of ecotypes is a classic example of local adaptation and microevolution, restricted to species with appropriate genetic variability. Phytoremediator woody species, with (i) high biomass production, (ii) a deep root system, (iii) high growth rate, (iv) high capacity to grow in impoverished soils, and (v) high capacity to allocate metals in the trunk, can be an alternative for the recovery of degraded soils due to excess of metallic elements. Phytoremediation using woody species presents advantageous characteristics as an economic and ecologically viable system, making it an appropriate, practical and successful technology.

Removal of hexavalent chromium by fungal biomass of Mucor racemosus: influencing factors and removal mechanism

This study reported the hexavalent chromium removal by untreated Mucor racemosus biomass and the possible mechanism of Cr (VI) removal to the biomass. The optimum pH, biomass dose, initial Cr (VI) concentration and contact time were investigated thoroughly to optimize the removal condition. The metal removal by the biomass was strongly affected by pH and the optimum pH ranged from 0.5 to 1.0. The residual total Cr was determined. It was found that dichromate reduction occurred at a low very low pH value. At biomass dose 6 g/l, almost all the Cr (VI) ions were removed in the optimum condition. Higher removal percentage was observed at lower initial concentrations of Cr (VI) ions, while the removal capacity of the biomass linearly depended on the initial Cr (VI) concentration. More than half of Cr (VI) ions were diminished within 1 h of contact and removal process reached a relative equilibrium in approximately 8 h. Almost all of the Cr (VI) ions were removed in 24 h when initial concentrations were below 100 mg/l. The equilibrium data were fitted in to the Langmuir and the Freundlich isotherm models and the correlated coefficients were gained from the models. A Fourier transform infrared spectra was employed to elucidate clearly the possible biosorption mechanism as well.
