Psychological consequences of sexual victimization resulting from force, incapacitation, or verbal coercion

Recently, incapacitated rape has emerged as a distinct type of sexual victimization. However, little is known about its longer-term psychological consequences. Two studies compare the psychological consequences of incapacitated rape to those of forcible rape and verbal coercion. Generally, the traumatic impact of incapacitated rape was intermediate to that of verbal coercion and forcible rape; however, there were domains (e.g., current perceived trauma and emotional impact) in which incapacitated and forcible rape had a similar impact and other domains (e.g., attributions of responsibility) in which incapacitated rape was similar to verbal coercion. This research suggests that sexual assault researchers might benefit from separately examining forcible and incapacitated rape.

The effects of survey question wording on rape estimates: evidence from a quasi-experimental design

The measurement of rape is among the leading methodological issues in the violence against women field. Methodological discussion continues to focus on decreasing measurement errors and improving the accuracy of rape estimates. The current study used a quasi-experimental design to examine the effect of survey question wording on estimates of completed and attempted rape and verbal threats of rape. Specifically, the study statistically compares self-reported rape estimates from two nationally representative studies of college women's sexual victimization experiences, the National College Women Sexual Victimization study and the National Violence Against College Women study. Results show significant differences between the two sets of rape estimates, with National Violence Against College Women study rape estimates ranging from 4.4% to 10.4% lower than the National College Women Sexual Victimization study rape estimates. Implications for future methodological research are discussed.

Sexuelle Aggression und Opfererfahrung unter Jugendlichen und jungen Erwachsenen

Zusammenfassung. Die internationale Forschungsliteratur belegt, dass unfreiwillige sexuelle Interaktionen unter Jugendlichen und jungen Erwachsenen weit verbreitet sind. Ausgehend von einer kurzen Bestandsaufnahme dieser Literatur stellt der Beitrag zwei eigene Studien zum Verbreitungsgrad und zu Risikofaktoren sexuell aggressiven Täterhandelns und sexueller Viktimisierung vor. Neben der traditionellen Konstellation männlicher Täter und weiblicher Opfer werden sexuelle Aggression von Frauen gegenüber Männern sowie sexuelle Viktimisierung von Männern durch Frauen betrachtet. Bezogen auf Risikofaktoren für Täterhandeln und Vulnerabilitätsfaktoren für Opfererfahrungen liegt der Schwerpunkt auf der Betrachtung biografischer Variablen (z.B. kindliche Missbrauchserfahrungen) sowie aktualgenetischer Faktoren (z.B. mehrdeutige Kommunikation sexueller Absichten), wobei der Verankerung von Risikoelementen sexueller Aggression in „sexuellen Skripts”, d.h. Verhaltensdrehbüchern für freiwillige sexuelle Interaktionen, besondere Bedeutung beigemessen wird. Abschließend werden die Implikationen der Befunde für die Entwicklung von Präventionsmaßnahmen diskutiert.
