An abrasion resistance study of some dental resins

The wear resistance of six filled and three unfilled resins was evaluated with the use of a commercial abrasion tester. The results showed significantly greater wear (P < 0.05) of the filled resins compared with the unfilled resins. Based on these observations, a mechanism for explaining the wear behavior of the filled resins has been proposed.

Ulceration of the mouth, pharynx, and larynx in Crohn's disease of the intestine

Three hundred and thirty-two cases of Crohn's enteritis were reviewed retrospectively and 20 or 6.1 per cent were found to have suffered from oral ulceration at some stage during their illness. One of these patients with histological evidence of Crohn's disease in the mouth, pharynx, and larynx is described in detail.

Anterograde amnesic effects of pethidine, hyoscine and diazepam in adults

1. The intravenous administration of 5 and 10 mg of diazepam caused anterograde amnesia in 50 and 90% of adults, the peak effect occurring in 2-3 min and action persisting for 20-30 minutes.2. Hyoscine (0.4 and 0.6 mg) caused amnesia in 35 and 50% of patients with peak effect not occurring until 50-80 min after injection and action persisting for at least 120 minutes.3. With neither drug was there any relationship between the incidence of amnesia and the degree of drowsiness.4. Amnesia was not observed after saline or after 50 mg pethidine.5. On questioning 6 h after a short operation many patients had no memory of an object which they clearly recognized and described 1 h after surgery.

Effect of sweet biscuits on the incidence of dental caries in rats

1. Biscuits baked to a recipe requiring only sucrose, white flour and water were ground to a powder and mixed with the remaining ingredients of a standard rat diet. The control diet contained the same dry-weight amounts of all ingredients, but the sucrose and flour were not baked into biscuits. Eighty-four rats were divided into two matched groups and fed on the diets for 8 weeks from weaning.

2. The biscuit diet produced significantly more caries than the control diet, with a total of about twice as many lesions, and also many more advanced lesions. Nearly all the lesions were in the molar fissures, suggesting that the cooked and powdered biscuit was impacted and retained in the fissures.

Incidence of immediate and delayed hypersensitivity to Candida albicans in denture stomatitis

The incidence of immediate and delayed hypersensitivity to Candida albicans in 45 patients with denture stomatitis and 100 control patients was investigated. No increase in this incidence was found; it is suggested, therefore, that allergy to the fungus is probably not the cause of denture stomatitis.
