Abstract
Convenient and high-yielding syntheses of two new morpholine-substituted N-heterocyclic carbene ligands, 1-Ar-3-{2-(4-morpholinyl)phenyl}imidazolidin-2-ylidene (Ar = Dipp, Mes), are described. An investigation of corresponding palladium complexes reveals hemilability, and examples of both monodentate and bidentate coordination are observed. A preliminary investigation of the activity of these palladium complexes for Buchwald–Hartwig amination catalysis is presented.

Synthesis, characterization, and electrochemical studies of PPh(3-n)(dipp)(n) (dipp = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl): steric and electronic effects on the chemical and electrochemical oxidation of a homologous series of triarylphosphines and the reactivities of the corresponding phosphoniumyl radical cations. Abstract
Activation barriers to the electrochemical oxidation for the series PPh3-n(dipp)n (dipp = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl) in CH2Cl2/Bu4NPF6 were measured using large amplitude FT ac voltammetry. Increasing substitution across this series, which offers the widest range of steric requirements across any analogous series of triarylphosphines reported to date, increases the energetic barrier to electron transfer; values of 18, 24, and 25 kJ mol(-1) were found for compounds with n = 1, 2, and 3, respectively. These values are significantly greater than those calculated for outer sphere activation barriers, with deviations between observed and calculated values increasing with the number of dipp ligands. This suggests that the steric congestion afforded by these bulky substituents imposes significant reorganizational energy on the electron transfer processes. This is the first investigation of the effect of sterics on the kinetics of heterogeneous electron transfer across a structurally homologous series. Increased alkyl substitution across the series also increases the chemical reversibility of the oxidations and decreases the oxidation peak potentials. As the compounds for which n = 1 and 2 are novel, the synthetic strategies employed in their preparation are described, along with their full spectroscopic, physical, and crystallographic characterization. Optimal synthesis when n = 1 is via a Grignard reagent, whereas when n = 2 an aryl copper reagent must be employed, as use of a Grignard results in reductive coupling. Chemical oxidation studies were performed to augment the electrochemical work; the O, S, and Se oxidation products for the parent triarylphosphines for which n = 1 and 2 were isolated and characterized.

Abstract
Achieving site-selective, switchable C-H functionalizations of substrates that contain several different types of reactive C-H bonds is an attractive objective to enable the generation of different products from the same starting materials. Herein, we demonstrate the divergent C-H functionalization of unsymmetrical 2-aryl cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds that contain two distinct, nonadjacent sites for initial C-H functionalization, where product selectivity is achieved through catalyst control. By use of a palladium-N-heterocyclic carbene complex as the precatalyst, these substrates undergo oxidative annulation with alkynes to provide spiroindenes exclusively. In contrast, a ruthenium-based catalyst system gives benzopyrans as the major products. Examples of divergent, oxidative C-H alkenylations of the same substrates are also provided.

Abstract
A robust allylic palladium-NHC complex was developed and exhibited extremely high catalytic activity toward aminocarbonylation of various (hetero)aryl iodides under atmospheric carbon monoxide pressure, in which a broad range of secondary and primary amines were well tolerated. In addition, the concise synthesis of an anticancer drug tamibarotene was accomplished even in a gram scale, further highlighting the practical applicability of the protocol.

Abstract
Two new palladium complexes with a pyracene-linked bis-imidazolylidene (pyrabim) group have been obtained and fully characterized. The related monometallic analogues were obtained from the coordination of an acetanaphthene-supported N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC). The catalytic properties of all complexes were studied in the acylation of aryl halides with hydrocinnamaldehyde, and in the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of aryl halides and aryl boronic acids. The results show that the presence of a second metal in the dimetallic complexes induces some benefits in the catalytic behavior of the complexes. This effect is more pronounced in the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling, for which the dimetallic complexes exhibit significantly higher activity than their monometallic counterparts.

Abstract
The activation of PEPPSI precatalysts has been systematically studied in Pd-catalysed sulfination. Under the reactions conditions of the sulfide and KOtBu in toluene, the first thing that happens is exchange of the two chlorides on the PEPPSI precatalyst with the corresponding sulfides, creating the first resting state; it is via this complex that all Pd enters the catalytic cycle. However, it is also from this same complex that a tri-Pd complex forms, which is a more persistent resting state. Under standard reaction conditions, this complex is catalytically inactive. However, if additional pyridine or a smaller base (i.e., KOEt) is added, this complex is broken down, presumably initially back to the first resting state and it is again capable of entering the catalytic cycle and completing the sulfination. Of note, once the tri-Pd complex forms, one equivalent of Pd is lost to the transformation. Related to this, the nature of the cation of the sulfide salt and solvent dielectric is very important to the success of this transformation. That is, the less soluble the salt the better the performance, which can be attributed to lowering sulfide concentration to avoid the movement of the Pd-NHC complex into the above described off-cycle sulfinated resting states.

Abstract
A wide range of biaryls were synthesized by palladium-catalyzed Negishi cross-couplings at ambient temperature or with low catalyst loading. This protocol features the use of a recently reported aminobiphenyl palladacycle precatalyst to generate the catalytically active XPhosPd(0) species. Significantly, a wide range of challenging heterocyclic and polyfluorinated aromatic substrates can be employed to give products in excellent yields.

Abstract
An examination of the [{Pd(cinnamyl)Cl}(2)]/Mor-DalPhos (Mor-DalPhos = di(1-adamantyl)-2-morpholinophenylphosphine) catalyst system in Buchwald-Hartwig aminations employing ammonia was conducted to better understand the catalyst formation process and to guide the development of precatalysts for otherwise challenging room-temperature ammonia monoarylations. The combination of [{Pd(cinnamyl)Cl}(2)] and Mor-DalPhos afforded [(κ(2)-P,N-Mor-DalPhos)Pd(η(1)-cinnamyl)Cl] (2), which, in the presence of a base and chlorobenzene, generated [(κ(2)-P,N-Mor-DalPhos)Pd(Ph)Cl] (1 a). Halide abstraction from 1 a afforded [(κ(3)-P,N,O-Mor-DalPhos)Pd(Ph)]OTf (5), bringing to light a potential stabilizing interaction that is offered by Mor-DalPhos. An examination of [(κ(2)-P,N-Mor-DalPhos)Pd(aryl)Cl] (1 b-f) and related precatalysts for the coupling of ammonia and chlorobenzene at room temperature established the suitability of 1 a in such challenging applications. The scope of reactivity for the use of 1 a (5 mol %) encompassed a range of (hetero)aryl (pseudo)halides (X = Cl, Br, I, OTs) with diverse substituents (alkyl, aryl, ether, thioether, ketone, amine, fluoro, trifluoromethyl, and nitrile), including chemoselective arylations.

Abstract
The chemistry of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) has witnessed tremendous development in the past two decades: NHCs have not only become versatile ligands for transition metals, but have also emerged as powerful organic catalysts in molecular chemistry and, more recently, in metal-free polymer synthesis. To understand the success of NHCs, this review first presents the electronic properties of NHCs, their main synthetic methods, their handling, and their reactivity. Their ability to activate key functional groups (e.g. aldehydes, esters, heterocycles, silyl ketene acetals, alcohols) is then discussed in the context of molecular chemistry. Focus has been placed on the activation of substrates finding analogies with monomers (e.g. bis-aldehydes, multi-isocyanates, cyclic esters, epoxides, N-carboxyanhydrides, etc.) and/or initiators (e.g. hydroxy- or trimethylsilyl-containing reagents) employed in such "organopolymerisation" reactions utilizing NHCs. A variety of metal-free polymers, including aliphatic polyesters and polyethers, poly(α-peptoid)s, poly(meth)acrylates, polyurethanes, or polysiloxanes can be obtained in this way. The last section covers the use of NHCs as structural components of the polymer chain. Indeed, NHC-based photoinitiators, chain transfer agents or functionalizing agents, as well as bifunctional NHC monomer substrates, can also serve for metal-free polymer synthesis.

Abstract
A well-defined N-heterocyclic carbene–palladium(II)-1-methylimidazole [NHC-Pd(II)-Im] complex 1 was found to be an effective catalyst for the Mizoroki–Heck reaction of a variety of aryl chlorides with styrenes. Both activated and deactivated aryl chlorides work well to give the corresponding coupling products in good to excellent yields by using tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) as the ionic liquid.
