Abstract
The synthesis of 1-alkenylboronic acid pinacol esters via a palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of bis(pinacolato)diboron (pin(2)B(2), pin = Me(4)C(2)O(2)) with 1-alkenyl halides or triflates was carried out in toluene at 50 degrees C in the presence of KOPh (1.5 equiv) and PdCl(2)(PPh(3))(2)-2Ph(3)P (3 mol %). The borylation of acyclic and cyclic 1-alkenyl bromides and triflates was achieved in high yields with complete retention of configuration of the double bonds. The method was applied to the one-pot synthesis of unsymmetrical 1,3-dienes via the borylation-coupling sequence.

Abstract
The metal-catalyzed allylic substitution reaction of 5a,b and 6a was examined. Reaction with stabilized nucleophiles led to exclusive attack at the less-hindered allylic terminus, and the stereoselectivity varied with the bidentate ligand used but favored retention. The yields and reaction times were improved with the use of microwaves. Alkylation via transmetalation was only observed with phenyl- and vinylstannatranes and gave regio- and stereoselectivity opposite those observed with the stabilized anions. The epimeric carbonates 5a and 5b displayed very different reactivities. Catalysts containing metals other than palladium were completely unreactive and led to recovered starting material.

Abstract
2,2'-Diiodobiphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid dimethyl ester (3) undergoes either a ring-closure reaction with phenylacetylene to give 4 or hydrodeiodo phenylethynylation to give 5 under the catalytic conditions of Pd(OAc)(2)/CuI/phosphine in amines. In these reactions, the amine and the phosphine ligands play important roles in controlling the reactivity. Among the ligands we used, tris(o-tolyl)phosphine is the best ligand for hydrodeiodo phenylethynylation, while the bidentate phosphine ligand retards both of the reactions. On the basis of our results, we propose that 5 is formed through a fast hydrodeiodination, followed by a Sonogashira phenylethynylation. The results of the deuterium labeling experiments show that proton exchange between the acetylenic proton and the alkyl protons of amine occurs effectively under the reaction conditions. In addition, the hydrogen that replaces the iodide in the hydrodeiodination process arises mainly from the acetylenic proton.

Abstract
A series of novel diphosphite ligands derived from readily available D-(+)-glucose has been synthesized. These ligands have been applied to the Rh-catalyzed hydroformylation of vinyl arenes. Both excellent enantioselectivities (up to 91%) and regioselectivities (up to 98.8%) were achieved under mild conditions. The advantage of these ligands is that their modular natures allow facile, systematic variation in the configurations at the stereocenters [C(3), C(5)] at the ligand bridge and in the biphenyl substituents, enabling their effects on the stereoselectivity to be studied. Results show that the absolute configuration of the product is governed by the configuration at the stereogenic center C(3), while the level of the enantioselectivity is influenced by a cooperative effect between stereocenters C(3) and C(5). Replacement of the tert-butyl substituent by methoxy substituents at the para positions of the biphenyl moieties improved the enantioselectivities. We have characterized the rhodium complexes formed under CO/H2 by NMR techniques and in situ IR spectroscopy and have observed that there is a relationship between the structure of the [HRh(CO)2(PP)] species and their enantiodiscriminating performance in hydroformylation. Enantioselectivities were highest with ligands with a strong bis-equatorial coordination preference, while an equilibrium of species with bis-equatorial and equatorial-axial coordination modes considerably reduced the ee's.

Abstract
Three series of P-chiral diphosphines based on ferrocene (1a-f, 2a-c) and biferrocenyl skeletons (3a-c), including novel ligands 1f and 3c, were employed in palladium-catalyzed allylic substitution reactions. Steric effects imposed by the phosphine residues were studied using C2-symmetrical donors 1 (1 = 1,1'-bis(arylphenylphosphino)ferrocene with aryl groups a = 1-naphthyl, b = 2-naphthyl, c = 2-anisyl, d = 2-biphenylyl, e = 9-phenanthryl, and f = ferrocenyl), whereas para-methoxy- and/or para-trifluoromethyl substitution of the phenyl moieties in 1a enabled investigation of ligand electronic effects applying ferrocenyl diphosphines 2a-c. Ligands 3 (3 = 2,2'-bis- (arylphenylphosphino)-1,1'-biferrocenyls with aryl substituents a,c = 1-naphthyl (diastereomers) and b = 2-biphenylyl) allowed for comparison of backbone structure effects (bite angle variation) in catalysis. Linear and cyclic allylic acetates served as substrates in typical test reactions; upon attack of soft carbon and nitrogen nucleophiles on (E)-1,3-diphenylprop-2-ene-1-yl acetate the respective malonate, amine, or imide products were obtained in enantioselectivities of up to 99% ee. A crystal structure analysis of a palladium 1,3-diphenyl-eta 3-allyl complex incorporating ligand (S,S)-1a revealed a marked distortion of the allyl fragment, herewith defining the regioselectivity of nucleophile addition.

Abstract
[Pd(P-O-P)(Ar)]+ complexes with ligands that have wide bite angles are active catalysts for the coupling of aniline derivatives with aryl triflates. Kinetic studies show that for these systems a fast equilibrium that involves coordination of the amine precedes the deprotonation, which is the rate-limiting step of the reaction. This reaction is faster for compounds with a smaller P-Pd-P angle. When halide salts are present, the base sodium tert-butoxide is activated and adds to the palladium complex. This rate-limiting step is preceded by a fast equilibrium that involves decoordination of the halide. The initial reaction rate is faster for compounds with a larger P-Pd-P angle. This is due to the closer proximity of the oxygen to the Pd center, and this assists in the dissociation of the halide.
