Abstract
Some novel lipophilic derivatives of N-acetylmuramyl-L-alanyl-D-isoglutamine (MDP) have been prepared and rigorously evaluated by spectroscopic means. Fast atom bombardment and field desorption mass spectrometry provided information about both molecular weight and structural detail. The new MDP derivatives have been tested in guinea pigs for immunoadjuvant activity using egg albumin as the model antigen. Amongst these derivatives, 6-O-[3-(5-cholesten-3 beta-yloxycarbonyl) propionyl]-N-acetylmuramyl-L-alanyl-D-isoglutamine (CSMDP), 6-O-[3-1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-carbonyl) propionyl]-N-acetylmuramyl-L-alanyl-D-isoglutamine (GSMDP) and N-palmitoyl muramyl-L-alanyl-D-isoglutamine (PMDP) possessed significantly better activity than MDP, as judged by the antigen-specific antibody and delayed hypersensitivity responses in the immunized animals. In addition, CSMDP was found to induce strong delayed hypersensitivity response even in saline. These three active compounds were also tested for their pyrogenic response in rabbits, and were found to be lesser pyrogenic than MDP. Some of these MDP derivatives hold promise as adjuvants in immunization.

Abstract
A simple spectrophotometric method for the quantitative determination of solid phase supported amino groups is described. The method involves reacting the solid support with an excess of activated acylating agent, N-succinimidyl-3-(2-pyridyldithio)propionate (SPDP) and an efficient acylation catalyst, 4-dimethylaminopyridine, and after thoroughly removing the unreacted SPDP, the solid support is reacted with an excess of dithiothreitol to quantitatively release pyridine-2-thione from the solid support to the solution. After an appropriate dilution, the released pyridine-2-thione which has a strong absorbance at 343 nm, is quantified by reading its absorbance in a spectrophotometer at 343 nm.

Abstract
Reaction of thyroxine with ethanol and pivalic anhydride in the presence of 4-dimethylaminopyridine quantitatively forms N,O-dipivalyl thyroxine ethyl ester. Other iodothyronines react similarly and the procedure is moisture insensitive. Apparently this reaction is successful, in contrast to similar procedures reported for the derivatization of alpha-amino acids, because it overcomes the problem in other procedures of irreversible side reactions arising from an oxazolone intermediate.

Abstract
The photoaffinity analogues of ubiquinone 2,3-dimethoxy-5-methyl-6-[2-[1-oxo-3-(4-azido-2-nitroanilino) propoxy]-3-methylbutyl]-1,4-benzoquinone (2'-ANAP-Q-1) and 2,3-dimethoxy-5-methyl-6-[3-[1-oxo-3-(4-azido-2-nitroanilino) propoxy]-3-methylbutyl]-1,4-benzoquinone (3'-ANAP-Q-1) have been synthesized. The required intermediate alcohols 2,3-dimethoxy-5-methyl-6-(2-hydroxy-3-methylbutyl)-1,4-benzoquinone and 2,3-dimethoxy-5-methyl-6-(3-hydroxy-3-methylbutyl)-1,4-benzoquinone were prepared in good yield from ubiquinone 1 by hydration of the side-chain double bond via hydroboration or acid catalysis, respectively. These alcohols were then coupled with 3-(4-azido-2-nitroanilino)propanoic acid, with p-toluenesulfonyl chloride in dry pyridine, to give 2'- and 3'-ANAP-Q-1. The synthetic methods presented should be of general utility in the preparation of derivatives of ubiquinone in which a reactive or reporter group is relatively close to the ubiquinone ring. By use of membrane vesicles prepared from a ubi-men-strain of Escherichia coli described previously [Wallace, B., & Young, I. G. (1977) Biochim. Biophys. Acta 461, 84-100], it has been shown that 2'- and 3'-ANAP-Q-1 substitute for ubiquinone 8 in the NADH, succinate, and D-lactate oxidase systems. Thus, these compounds may be of value in labeling respiratory chain proteins that interact with ubiquinone.

Abstract
A range of esters including salicylates, nicotinates and parabens have been shown to undergo reversible, base-catalysed transesterification in hydroalcoholic solutions. In non-alcoholic solution phenyl salicylate undergoes a concentration-dependent oligomerization which yields salsalate and other products. The transesterification reactions also occur in products formulated for topical use, which have vehicles based upon alcohol, glycol or glycol polymers. Without recognition, such reactions may compromise stability assessments, pharmaceutical integrity and delivery profiles.
