Fungi and the evolution of growth form

Fungi belong to the modular class of organisms characterized by an iterative, indeterminate mode of growth; internal age structure; localized rather than generalized senescence; cellular totipotency; and passive rather than active mobility. Growth form in the fungi therefore reflects their absorptive, sessile lifestyle. Aggregation/differentation of a few basic cell types gives rise to multicellular complexes associated with foraging, reproductive, survival, or dispersal activities. The morphological plasticity of fungi is analogous to but surpasses that of other modular creatures such as the benthic invertebrates and plants. For instance, in response to environmental signals, fungi can vary the timing, extent, and mode of differentiation; interconvert among different growth forms; and decouple the sexual and asexual phases of the life cycle. Evolutionary determinants of their form are phylogenetic constraint, adaptation, developmental constraint, ecophenotypic factors, and chance. Physiological determinants of their form relate primarily to morphogenesis of the cell wall and include the cytoskeleton and cytosis. Morphological and morphometric study of crustacean parasites within the genus Lernaeocera

Two species of Lernaeocera are present in the southeastern North Sea. Lernaeocera lusci infects bib Trisopterus luscus, dragonet Callionymus lyra and sand goby Pomatoschistus minutas. L. minuta is a junior synonym of L. lusci. The second valid species, L. branchialis, infects whiting Merlangius merlangus. The two species can be morphologically separated by the antennary processes, which are present in L. lusci and absent in L. branchialis. Discriminant functions allow complete separation between L. lusci and L. branchialis. There is high intraspecific, host-dependent variability within L. lusci. Length of L. lusci is significantly influenced by host size, and body form is influenced by the site of attachment of L. lusci on at least one host (bib). It is suggested that L. lusci consists of 3 forms: f. lusci, f. minuta and f. lyra.

Interspecies pharmacokinetic scaling of BSH in mice, rats, rabbits, and humans

Sodium mercaptoundecahydrododecaborate or BSH is an important compound for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). The total clearance and steady state volume of distribution of BSH in humans and in laboratory animals were analyzed as a function of species body weight using the allometric equation for interspecies scaling. Significant linear relationships were obtained between log CLt (Lh-1) and log W (kg) (r = 0.972; p = 0.028) as well as log VSS (L) and log W (kg) (r = 0.999; p = 0.0005). The corresponding allometric equations were CLt = 0.127 W0.68 and VSS = 1.557 W0.87, respectively. BSH clearance in various species was shown to be a constant fraction (0.26) of creatinine clearance, the relationship being independent of body weight. Thus BSH clearance in various species occurred at similar pace when measured by a physiological parameter (creatinine clearance) rather than chronological time. Interspecies scale-up of plasma concentration-time data for the four species using a complex Dedrick plot resulted in similar profiles. Our results indicate that the BSH data obtained in laboratory animals could be utilized to generate preliminary estimates of the pharmacokinetic parameters in humans. These parameters can serve as guidelines for better planning of clinical studies.

New characters for the functional interpretation of primate scapulae and proximal humeri

The study of muscle function in nonhuman primates through the technique of electromyography (EMG) has facilitated the identification of specific functional roles for muscles in particular behaviors. This has led to a more complete understanding of the biomechanics of certain regions of the musculoskeletal system, and should facilitate our ability to identify morphological features useful in the functional interpretation of fossil material. The current paper represents one such investigation of a new set of morphometric characters of the scapula and proximal humerus suggested by EMG analyses of shoulder muscle function. A set of new metric variables were examined on the scapulae and proximal humeri of 25 species of extant anthropoid primates, as well as on casts of scapulae and humeri of three fossil primate taxa. The variables are primarily related to the line of action and attachments of the rotator cuff muscles. The position of the scapular spine, the degree of lateral expansion of the subscapular fossa, the size and shape of the subscapularis insertion facet on the lesser tubercle, and the orientation of the infraspinatus insertion facet on the greater tubercle all appear to successfully sort the extant taxa into locomotor groups. Their appearance on the fossil specimens generally supports previous functional interpretations of each taxon's locomotor abilities based on a variety of other characters, suggesting that these traits are equally applicable to fossil material.

Disposition kinetics of tylosin tartrate administered intravenously and intramuscularly to normal and water-deprived camels

The disposition kinetics of tylosin tartrate administered intravenously (i.v.) at 10 mg/kg and intramuscularly (i.m.) at 20 mg/kg were studied in normal camels and in the same camels at the end of a 14 day water-deprivation period. After i.v. treatment, serum tylosin concentrations in the water-deprived camels were significantly higher, rate of drug elimination was slower, the volume of distribution was significantly smaller, and total body clearance was significantly slower than in the normal camels. On the other hand, serum drug concentrations were lower in the water deprived camels after i.m. dosing, the mean absorption time was significantly shorter and the i.m. availability was significantly smaller than in the normal camels. Water-deprivation was thought to cause reduced rate of tylosin elimination by the liver, as was shown for antipyrine--a drug which is eliminated from the body exclusively by the liver. Redistribution of tylosin in tissues concomitant with a greater proportion of drug in blood and extracellular fluid of water-deprived camels was suggested as a partial explanation for the higher serum drug levels seen after i.v. dosing. The low i.m. availability observed in the water-deprived camels implies that i.v. is the route of choice for tylosin administration to ill, dehydrated camels.

A comparison of one-stage and two-stage nonextraction alternatives in matched Class II samples

In the treatment of Class II malocclusion, an early phase of functional appliance treatment is commonly used to simplify subsequent fixed appliance therapy and to optimize the development of the facial skeleton. Unfortunately, these expectations enjoy little support in the refereed literature. The present study therefore was undertaken to examine the benefits of a two-stage bionator/edgewise regimen in comparison to the more conventional one-stage edgewise alternative. To minimize proficiency bias, we examined the records of the one- and two-stage Class II nonextraction patients who received treatment between 1980 and 1990 by a single experienced clinician. On the basis of descriptive data from 96 sets of initial study models and lateral cephalograms, discriminant analysis was used to identify two subsamples of 36 patients who were relatively similar before treatment and thus equally susceptible to the two treatments. Of these 72 "borderline" patients, 19 subsequently underwent a change in treatment plan (to extraction or surgery), leaving 25 two-stage and 28 single-stage nonextraction patients on whom to base a comparison of treatment effects. Except for a slight posttreatment difference in age (and, hence, size), the two groups underwent skeletal changes that left them essentially indistinguishable at the end of treatment. In both groups, these skeletal changes were largely responsible for molar and overjet corrections that were nearly identical in the two groups. The rates of change, however, differed significantly. As a result, the two-stage treatments started earlier and finished later. Although the present data do not address the relative impact of the two strategies on the 10% to 15% at each tail of the distribution, the early phase of functional appliance treatment conferred no obvious, measurable benefits on the central 75%. Therefore for most nonextraction Class II patients, the choice of treatments may well constitute a practice management, rather than a biologic, decision.

Development of the olfactory and accessory lobes in the American lobster: an allometric analysis and its implications for the deutocerebral structure of decapods

The allometric changes characterizing the growth of the deutocerebrum (midbrain) of the American lobster (Homarus americanus) are studied using computerized three-dimensional reconstructions of serial brain sections. During the embryogenesis of the midbrain, the paired accessory lobes (higher order processing areas) appear later than the paired olfactory lobes (primary olfactory centers), but the former grow faster from their emergence until metamorphosis. The accessory lobes, as they enlarge, shift progressively from a medial to a posterior position in the lateral deutocerebrum. In early juvenile stages the accessory lobes are one of the largest neuropils of the brain. However, these lobes stop growing in adult animals, whereas the brain and olfactory lobes continue to enlarge, albeit at a slow rate. The overall shape of the brain and the relative proportions and locations of the deutocerebral neuropils and associated cell clusters of various lobster ontogenetic stages are similar to those of selected adult decapods. In addition, the relation between deutocerebral organization and brain size seem parallel during lobster development and across crustacean species. Measurements of the brains of 13 species of decapods (illustrated in Sandeman et al. [1993] J. Exp. Zool. 265:112, plus Homarus) indicate the following trends: Small brains possess olfactory lobes but no accessory lobes, larger brains possess accessory lobes that are medial and small relative to the olfactory lobes, and the largest brains contain relatively voluminous posterior accessory lobes. These observations indicate that some differences in the organization of the deutocerebrum are related to absolute brain size in crustaceans and suggest that ontogenetic scaling of proportions may apply to the deutocerebral neuropils of decapods. Peramorphosis and paedomorphosis in the evolution of the decapod brain are considered.

Changes in shape associated with growth in the loliginid squidPhotololigosp.: a morphometric approach

This study examined growth of squid by describing changes in shape and relative size of body structures in juvenile and adult Photololigo sp. Animals change shape during growth because body structures increase in size at different relative rates. These changes are of particular interest because they are generally concomitant with changes in ecology. Length and mass measurements were taken from Photololigo sp. ranging in size from 2.77 to 117.03 mm dorsal mantle length. Small squid (< 50 mm dorsal mantle length) had round bodies with large head and eyes and poorly developed tentacles and arms. Larger squid (> 50 mm dorsal mantle length) were more elongate and narrow, and the head and eyes were proportionally smaller. As squid reached a dorsal mantle length of 50 mm, the changes in shape with growth become slower and individuals reached a final shape. Small individuals allocated energy predominantly in the arms and tentacles during early stages of growth, while the viscera and head grew at a much slower rate. Once individuals began producing gametic tissue and gonad growth occurred, the mantle muscle grew more slowly than the gonad. Changes in shape could be related to changes in locomotion and feeding that occur during ontogeny.

Jaw muscles of New World squirrels

The jaw, suprahyoid, and extrinsic tongue muscles are described for eight species of New World squirrels, spanning more than an order of magnitude in body mass. Anatomical differences are discussed in the light of body size, natural history, and phylogeny. The relative sizes of different muscles, their orientations, and the shapes and positions of their areas of attachment vary but show few trends in relation to body size. The anatomical differences are likewise not readily explained by the mechanical requirements of the animals' diets, which are similar. The most marked anatomical differences occur in Sciurillus (the pygmy tree squirrel), as well as those genera--Glaucomys (the flying squirrel) and Tamias (the chipmunk)--that are taxonomically most distinct from the tree squirrels. Sciurillus is noteworthy for its unusually small temporalis and an anterior deep masseter that is oriented to assist in retraction of the jaw. Tamias has a more vertically oriented temporalis and greater inclination in the anterior masseter muscles than the other squirrels, features that may be associated with its large diastema and relatively posteriorly situated cheek teeth, which in turn may relate to its having cheek pouches. Our results form a valuable database of information to be used in further studies of functional morphology and phylogeny.

Organ and cell allometry in Hawaiian Drosophila: how to make a big fly

The importance of body size in predicting many aspects of an animal's biology has become well established in recent years. However, little is known about how body size evolves at the cellular level. Some published data suggest that it is cell number and not cell size that accompanies changes in organ and body size across taxa. We examined organ and cell allometry in the wing, eye and basitarsus of adult Hawaiian Drosophila, ranging in body length from 0.2 mm to 0.8 mm. Linear measurements of all three structures exhibit a positive allometry with body length. Exponents of the allometric equation were 0.96, 0.55 and 1.50 for wing, eye and basitarsus, respectively. Surface markers were used to quantify cell size of each organ. The allometric exponents for cell size as a function of organ size were 0.53, 0.68 and 0.33 for wing, eye and basitarsus, respectively. In contrast to reports in the literature on other systems, our results for Hawaiian Drosophila indicate that cell size may contribute between one third and two thirds to evolutionary changes in organ and body size.

Mandibular growth rates in human fetal development

A morphometric analysis of changing proportions in the developing mandible was undertaken in 18 human embryos and fetuses of both sexes (developmental age from 8 to 14 weeks, crown-rump length, CRL, from 34 to 110 mm), previously cleared and stained with a specific method for bone (alizarin red S). Reference points were located on the mandible, i.e. condylar process (Pcl), coronoid process (Pco), gnathion (GN), gonion (GO), superior symphyseal point (SSP), for measuring linear dimensions, i.e. Pcl-GN, Pcl-Pco, Pco-GN, GO-GN, SSP-GN. The gonial (Pcl-GO-GN) and the (Pcl-GN-Pcl) angles were also measured. All linear dimensions were correlated with the CRL by bivariate allometry (1n y = 1n a+b 1n x): they all grew with positive allometry, except GO-GN with isometry. The mandibular ramus grew relatively faster than the body, both in length and height, and the greatest growth rate was found for ramus height. The relation between mandibular shape and the craniofacial structures was investigated using scale drawings obtained from photographs of fetal skulls in lateral view. In the youngest fetuses the mandible was prognathic, then became retrognathic. During the period investigated the zygomatic process and squama of the temporal bone were in a lower and more inclined position in relation to the transverse plane passing through the zygomatic arch than in the newborn and adult. This study identifies parameters fitting changing trends in height, length and shape of the human mandible during the prenatal period (8-14 weeks); moreover, it emphasizes that the mandibular growth patterns differ significantly from those of successive development periods.

Allometry of cetacean forelimb bones

This study examines the allometric scaling relationships of the cetacean humerus, radius, and ulna. Bone lengths and diameters were measured for 20 species of odontocete and three species of mysticete cetaceans, representing eight of the nine extant cetacean families. The scaling of individual bone proportions (bone length vs. cranio-caudal diameter, bone length vs. dorso-ventral diameter), and of individual bone dimensions against estimated body mass, are compared to models of geometric and elastic similarity. The geometric similarity model describes the scaling relationship of bone length vs. cranio-caudal diameter and body mass vs. cranio-caudal diameter for the humerus only; geometric similarity also describes the scaling relationship of body mass vs. bone length for all three bones. None of the scaling relationships fits the elastic similarity model. The scaling relationships of bone length vs. dorso-ventral diameter for all three bones, and bone length vs. cranio-caudal diameter for the radius and ulna, exhibit negative allometry, indicating that large bones are less robust than small bones. Negative allometry of structural support elements has not been previously described for terrestrial mammals or plants. The high relative swimming speeds of small delphinids may generate sufficient stresses to require more robust bones relative to those of larger whales.

Morphometry of the human heart in the second and third trimesters of gestation

The growth of the heart was studied in 56 human fetuses ranging from 14 to 38 weeks (23 female and 33 male) using the following measurements: cardiac length and width, aortic and pulmonary artery internal diameters, right and left anterior ventricular wall thickness. Relationships between the fetal cardiac data and crown-rump length were explored by allometry and linear regression analysis. The present study confirmed that the heart increases with high growth rates and positive allometry during prenatal life. Statistically different growth rates were found comparing female with male fetuses (sexual dimorphism): (a) in the third trimester (P < 0.001, except for the cardiac length and the left ventricular wall thickness), (b) considering fetuses of the second and third trimesters together (only for cardiac width, P = 0.0015). In these circumstances the female fetuses had the greatest growth rates. The length and the width of the heart are diameters easily obtained in the ultrasonographic four-chamber view of the heart in the last two trimesters of gestation. Therefore, these data can be analyzed by non-invasive methods and are useful for prenatal detection of congenital heart disease.

Mechanics of standing in birds: functional explanation of lameness problems in giant turkeys

1. The parameters used for the mechanics of standing in birds are defined and compared for two strains of turkeys, a giant, broad-breasted strain (up to 40 kg), the result of artificial selection, and a traditional, smaller bird (9 kg), in order to show whether the mechanics of standing are modified by selection. 2. Using a geometrical similarity hypothesis, it was found that, although the locomotor apparatus of both strains are similar, the stresses on the pelvic muscles of broad-breasted turkeys are increased. This is induced by the anterior position of the centres of gravity of their trunks, the result of selected pectoral hypertrophy. 3. The modification to the mechanics of standing may be related to the increase in locomotor disease in strains of giant turkeys.

Cope's rule, the island rule and the scaling of mammalian population density

Cope's rule--the generalization that animal taxa tend to evolve toward larger body size--suggests that there are widespread net selective advantages to being large. Size-abundance relationships within bird and desert rodent guilds show that larger species usually do control more energy locally, and thus maintain larger populations than expected for their body size, implying that larger individuals are relatively better at obtaining and using local resources. But we report here results that show that this is not generally the case among mammal species. Within dietary groups containing only small species, larger species usually do better, but within those that contain the largest mammals, small species tend to control more energy. This suggests that in mammals there is an optimum body size for energy acquisition at about 1 kg. Thus, net adaptive advantages of large individuals for resource control cannot be used as a general explanation for evolutionary size increase in mammals, although other proposed explanations for Cope's rule are unaffected. Instead, these results suggest a partial explanation for another widespread ecotypic pattern, the 'island rule': that on islands, small mammal species evolve to larger size and large species to smaller size. If on an island a species' usual competitors and predators are absent, it should often tend to evolve toward the optimum body size, and the adaptive advantages of doing so would be greatest for populations starting at body-size extremes.

Growth allometry of the human face: analysis of the osseous component of the mid and lower face in Brazilian fetuses

Growth of facial bones was studied in 30 human fetuses ranging from 14 to 35 weeks of gestation (both sexes together), investigating both bivariate and multivariate allometry with principal components analysis (PCA). Weight of the mandible, maxillae, zygomatic, palatine, vomer and both lateral masses of the ethmoid bones was measured and correlated with fetal weight. The relative order of growth rates was similar for bivariate and multivariate results. These results indicate that the growth rate of the lower face is greater than growth rates of the vomer and palatine bones, and is less than growth rates of the maxillae, zygomatic and ethmoid bones. Bivariate and multivariate results present only one significant difference: the mandible grows with positive allometry in bivariate study and with negative allometry in multivariate analysis. The analysis performed in this study provides an approximation of the biological phenomenon of growth which may be useful in the interpretation of facial growth.

A coordinate-free approach to the analysis of growth patterns: models and theoretical considerations

Developmental biology holds keys to our understanding of morphological pattern formation whether these patterns are expressed in the fossil record or among extant species. Though much is known about osseous growth at the cellular level (e.g. Hall, 1991), we have minimal understanding of the coordinated processes that combine to produce a complex, three-dimensional form. We have proposed a framework for the coordinate-free representation of form, a statistical method for comparing and modelling growth trajectories for complex morphologies, and a means for the eventual elucidation of the role of growth in the evolution of morphology. Our method uses the coordinate locations of biological landmarks to represent form as a matrix of all possible linear distances between landmarks, the form matrix. When two forms are expressed in this way, comparison of these forms is accomplished by computing the ratios of like linear distances, the form difference matrix. When the forms being compared are from a growth series, the matrix of ratios is called a growth matrix. Patterns of growth for two groups can be compared by computing the growth difference matrix. We applied growth difference matrix analysis to the study of sexual dimorphism of ontogeny in the M. fascicularis craniofacial skeleton. Growth matrices describing growth in male and female M. fascicularis were presented along with the growth difference matrix that describes sexual dimorphism of growth to underscore the detailed information available from this analytical technique. The method is quite general and can be applied to two- or three-dimensional data sets of landmark coordinates (cross-sectional or longitudinal) collected from almost any developing structure. The methods that we propose enable us to go beyond a mathematical summary of the comparison of forms and the comparison of growth patterns. We provide examples of how growth patterns might be used in the study of phylogenetic relationships. Our plans for use of this method in the study of evolutionary change assumes that morphological change in the craniofacial skeleton results from evolutionary change in developmental units (as defined by Atchley & Hall, 1991) that underlie morphological structure. We believe we have the basic tools to ultimately propose informed phylogenies based solely on developmental data. This task requires the identification of 'growth features' and the polarization of these features as primitive or derived. It is also advisable to determine a set of primitive growth features for the groups of interest. This will necessitate the inclusion of outgroups in our growth analysis.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Ratios as a size adjustment in morphometrics

Simple ratios in which a measurement variable is divided by a size variable are commonly used but known to be inadequate for eliminating size correlations from morphometric data. Deficiencies in the simple ratio can be alleviated by incorporating regression coefficients describing the bivariate relationship between the measurement and size variables. Recommendations have included: 1) subtracting the regression intercept to force the bivariate relationship through the origin (intercept-adjusted ratios); 2) exponentiating either the measurement or the size variable using an allometry coefficient to achieve linearity (allometrically adjusted ratios); or 3) both subtracting the intercept and exponentiating (fully adjusted ratios). These three strategies for deriving size-adjusted ratios imply different data models for describing the bivariate relationship between the measurement and size variables (i.e., the linear, simple allometric, and full allometric models, respectively). Algebraic rearrangement of the equation associated with each data model leads to a correctly formulated adjusted ratio whose expected value is constant (i.e., size correlation is eliminated). Alternatively, simple algebra can be used to derive an expected value function for assessing whether any proposed ratio formula is effective in eliminating size correlations. Some published ratio adjustments were incorrectly formulated as indicated by expected values that remain a function of size after ratio transformation. Regression coefficients incorporated into adjusted ratios must be estimated using least-squares regression of the measurement variable on the size variable. Use of parameters estimated by any other regression technique (e.g., major axis or reduced major axis) results in residual correlations between size and the adjusted measurement variable. Correctly formulated adjusted ratios, whose parameters are estimated by least-squares methods, do control for size correlations. The size-adjusted results are similar to those based on analysis of least-squares residuals from the regression of the measurement on the size variable. However, adjusted ratios introduce size-related changes in distributional characteristics (variances) that differentially alter relationships among animals in different size classes.

Sonographic quantitative analysis of the heart in the third trimester of gestation

The fetal heart was studied with transabdominal sonography in 40 single normal pregnancies to analyze the increase of cardiac length and width (major longitudinal and transverse diameters of the heart) during the third trimester. Relationships between the cardiac data and fetal age, femur length and biparietal diameter (BPD) were explored by allometry and linear regression analysis. The length and width of the heart could be measured reproducibly in the 4-chamber view of the heart. This study verified that the heart grows very rapidly during the third trimester (positive allometry). The linear increase of the fetal heart shows a strong and significant correlation with the increase of both femur length and BPD. This suggests that non invasive analysis of cardiac data can be useful for prenatal detection of congenital heart disease or for the assessment of gestational age.

Pulmonary function between 6 and 18 years of age

Pulmonary function of children aged 6-18 years is described based on 82,462 annual measurements of forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expired volume in 1 second (FEV1), and forced expiratory flow between 25% and 75% of FVC (FEF25-75%) from 11,630 white children and 989 black children. Median height, FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, and FEF25-75% for each 3 months of age are compared among race and sex subgroups. Race- and sex-specific percentile distributions of FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, and FEF25-75% are presented for each centimeter of height (growth curves). For the same height, boys have greater lung function values than girls, and whites have greater ones than blacks. Lung function increases linearly with age until the adolescent growth spurt at about age 10 years in girls and 12 in boys. The pulmonary function vs. height relationship shifts with age during adolescence. Thus, a single equation or the pulmonary function-height growth chart alone does not completely describe growth during the complex adolescent period. Nevertheless, race- and sex-specific growth curves of pulmonary function vs. height make it easy to display and evaluate repeated measures of pulmonary function for an individual child. Race-, sex-, and age-specific regression equations based on height are provided, which permit the evaluation of growth during adolescence with improved accuracy and, more importantly, in comparison with previous observations for the same child.

Scaling toxicity data across species

The response of various species to doses of chemicals can often give the impression that some (such as cattle in the case of molybdenum) are much more susceptible than others to these chemicals. These impressions usually rely on an underlying assumption that equivalent doses are based on mg of the chemical per kg body weight of the animal. That is, that doses scale as the first power of body weight. This assumption is more often wrong than right. When viewed in a more general way, where the scaling is proportional to a power of the body weight and the exponent determined empirically, it is often found that equivalent doses scale with an exponent in the range of 0.6 to 0.8. As a result, larger animals are indeed more susceptible to toxicity on a mg kg(-1) body weight basis, but this is not because of unique differences in the species, but only because of different body sizes. This method of scaling is called allometry or allometric scaling. An early version of this approach was based on body surface area where the exponent is 2/3. More recently, pharmacokinetics has revealed that the reason for the different response of larger animals is related to the slower metabolic and clearance rates for larger animals which give rise to larger biological half-lives for chemicals in the body and to higher tissue concentrations per given dose.

Growth of the cranial bones in human fetuses (2nd and 3rd trimesters)

The increase of the weight of some cranial bones was studied in 30 human fetuses (from 17 to 41 weeks of gestation, both sexes together) by multivariate allometry. The study was performed with a covariance matrix of the log-transformed bony weights and the Principal Components Analysis (PCA). The first principal component in PCA accounted for 92.12% of the total variance, and all characters were positively correlated with this component. PCA scaled the growth of the bones in the following sequence: a) with negative allometry: vomer, palatine, mandible and maxillae; b) with isometry (p less than 0.05): zygomatic bone; c) with positive allometry: sphenoid, ethmoid, frontal, occipital, temporal and parietal. During the 2nd and 3rd trimesters of gestation the skull exhibited two different growth rates, i.e., the bony group of the facial skeleton presented lower eigenvalues than the bony group of the calvaria, including the base of the skull. These bones of the calvaria certainly are affected by the high increase in volume of the fetal brain during the prenatal life. The knowledge of the cranial growth is a useful information for the anatomy, anthropology, orthodontics, and several medical specialties: radiology, obstetrics, pediatrics, orthopedics and reconstructive surgery.

Allometry and prediction in hominoids: a solution to the problem of intervening variables

To avoid misinterpretation of allometric exponents determined from interspecific allometric comparisons, specific conditions must be met with respect to the common reference variable. Body weight is considered to be the best general indication of overall size and is hence widely acknowledged to be the most suitable reference variable. However, because of the paucity of recorded body weights for museum specimens, various comparative studies have used other size indicators as intervening variables, although the allometric relationships to body size/weight were often unknown and possibly differed between species. Because of differences in the scaling properties of alternative intervening variables across the species investigated, conflicting conclusions may be drawn if different variables are chosen as substitutes for overall size. This is illustrated with two examples. In this study, series of skeletons with associated body weights of Gorilla, Pan, Pongo, and Homo were investigated. Both ontogenetic and static adult allometric relationships between several widely used reference variables and body weight were determined. Neither these variables nor additional estimators investigated in this study displayed allometric exponents and coefficients similar enough across species to justify direct interspecific comparison. To generate an alternative size estimator for both ontogenetic and static interspecific investigations, equations for combined sexes were derived to predict body weight from various long bone dimensions for individual hominoid species. From a total of 25 predictors, 12 prediction equations per species (six for nonadults and six for adults) were selected according to their relative suitability for reliable prediction of body weight. It is shown that the derived reference variable "predicted body weight" avoids problems of intervening variables, is valid for any interspecific ontogenetic and static allometric comparison, and displays less fluctuation in comparison to actual body weight.

Polymorphic aspects of male anthropoid honing premolars

A recent study has indicated that heritage may be an important component in explanations of interspecies variation in male anthropoid maxillary canines. To further test this hypothesis, comparative data for the maxillary canine's occlusal partner, the honing mandibular premolar, are presented. Relative to body mass, measurements of the honing premolar--length of the honing facet, mesiodistal length, and buccolingual breadth and shape (as expressed by the ratio of length to breadth)--show a similar but stronger heritage component than measurements of the maxillary canine. Results indicate that canine variation among male anthropoids has not yet been explained and that quantitative analyses of this issue will necessarily require a methodological approach which incorporates heritage as a factor.

Hindlimb proportions, allometry, and biomechanics in Old World monkeys (primates, Cercopithecidae)

The traditional focus on morphological rather than mechanical units has obscured some significant functional differences in the hindlimbs of primates. This paper examines the allometric and biomechanical basis for some distinctive proportional differences among pairs of morphological units in the hindlimb, and especially the foot, of cercopithecid primates. Five major conclusions are reached. First, many hindlimb dimensions scale allometrically with body mass to maintain mechanical similarity within taxonomic and locomotor groups. Therefore, the majority of traditional indices which describe the shape of the foot within cercopithecids reveal differences which are primarily a function of size. Second, the hindlimb segments in colobines, and especially in Presbytis, are relatively long, probably to enhance leaping. Third, the major distinction of terrestrial cercopithecines among the features analysed is reduction in the length of the phalanges, due to the reduced importance of grasping during locomotion and the assumption of digitigrady. Fourth, Theropithecus and male Erythrocebus have high crural indices, relative to their body masses, which can facilitate curosoriality. Female E. patas already has a high crural index as a function of its body mass. Fifth, macaques form a distinctive group among cercopithecines, characterized by relatively short hindlimbs. Relatively very short hindlimbs in Macaca fuscata and M. thibetana suggest that climatic conditions can have an added effect on the lengths of the hindlimb segments. In summary, this analysis of the lengths of the hindlimb segments relative to body size reveals taxonomic differences which are due in part to phylogeny, to differences in locomotor behavior, and to substrate use.
