Stretchable Transparent Wireless Charging Coil Fabricated by Negative Transfer Printing

Wearable electronics, such as smartwatches, VR (virtual reality)/AR (augmented reality) smartglasses, and E-textiles, are an emerging technology platform that is reshaping the way people interact with the surrounding world. However, the power source of these devices can be a critical issue, causing short operational/standby times and frequent charging. Here, a stretchable transparent wireless charging coil fabricated by negative adhesive transfer printing (NATP) is demonstrated. The stretchable transparent conductor is based on the silver nanowire (AgNW)-polyurethane acrylate (PUA) composite with high conductivity and robustness under harsh mechanical treatment. A 10.6 ohm/sq thin film has a transmittance of 84% and is still conductive under a mechanical deformation up to 60% tensile strain. A maximum power of 59 mW (power transfer efficiency ∼24%) is transferred wirelessly. A green-light-emitting diode (LED) was wirelessly powered to illustratively demonstrate the functionality of the system. This work provides an alternative power solution which is compatible with the soft and flexible components of wearable devices.

The Surface Science of Microarray Generation-A Critical Inventory

Microarrays are powerful tools in biomedical research and have become indispensable for high-throughput multiplex analysis, especially for DNA and protein analysis. The basis for all microarray processing and fabrication is surface modification of a chip substrate and many different strategies to couple probe molecules to such substrates have been developed. We present here a critical assessment of typical biochip generation processes from a surface science point of view. While great progress has been made from a molecular biology point of view on the development of qualitative assays and impressive results have been obtained on the detection of rather low concentrations of DNA or proteins, quantitative chip-based assays are still comparably rare. We argue that lack of stable and reliable deposition chemistries has led in many cases to suboptimal quantitative reproducibility, impeded further progress in microarray development and prevented a more significant penetration of microarray technology into the diagnostic market. We suggest that surface-attached hydrogel networks might be a promising strategy to achieve highly sensitive and quantitatively reproducible microarrays.

A versatile theranostic nanodevice based on an orthogonal bioconjugation strategy for efficient targeted treatment and monitoring of triple negative breast cancer

A novel chemical-based orthogonal bioconjugation strategy to produce tri-functionalized nanoparticles (NPs) an chemotherapy drug, doxorubicin (DOX), a near-infrared cyanine dye (Cy7) and CRGDK homing peptide, a peptide specifically binds to neuropilin-1 (Nrp-1) overexpressed on triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells, has been validated. These theranostic NPs have been evaluated in vitro and in vivo using an orthotopic xenotransplant mouse model using TNBC cells. In vitro assays show that theranostic NPs improve the therapeutic index in comparison with free DOX. Remarkably, in vivo studies showed preferred location of theranostic NPs in the tumor area reducing the volume at the same level than free DOX while presenting lower side effects. This multifunctionalized theranostic nanodevice based on orthogonal conjugation strategies could be a good candidate for the treatment and monitoring of Nrp-1 overexpressing tumors. Moreover, this versatile nanodevice can be easily adapted to treat and monitor different cancer types by adapting the conjugation strategy.

3D Co-Ni Nanocone Array Shielded with Conducting Amorphous Carbon Used as Fused, Separable, and Stable Mimicking Peroxidases for RGB-Color Intensiometric pH Indication

We demonstrate an in situ synthesis for preparing a carbon-shielded three-dimensional Co-Ni nanocone array on Ni foam (CoNi NCs/NF@C) via the solvothermal and thermal annealing processes. It is found that the easily separable CoNi NCs/NF@C possesses high peroxidase/catalase dual-mimic activity and good catalytic stability. The fusion of the amorphous carbon sheath with the Co-Ni nanocones (1) effectively improves interfacial electron transfer and catalytic stability of the Co-Ni nanocone array because of the excellent conductivity of amorphous carbon and (2) protects the Co-Ni nanocone array in the catalysis process from exposing to the harsh chemical environment, dramatically escaping the catalytic activity loss of Co-Ni (hydro)oxide. Interestingly, when CoNi NCs/NF@C mimics peroxidase using 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) as a substrate, the color of the TMB-H₂O₂-CoNi NC/NF@C system changes at different pH values. Based on this property, a facile strategy was developed for semiquantitative and qualitative determination of pH using the Eyedropper function in Microsoft's PowerPoint software, where the RGB (red, green, and blue) value of the sample can be conveniently measured by using a standard colorimetric card without the requirement of complicated instrumentation. Moreover, the relationship between the color of the reaction system and the pH was investigated, which was demonstrated by the total Euclidean distance (ED), that is, the square root of the sum of the squares of the ΔRGB values. The ED change of the reaction system is reversible and occurs in the pH range from 0.64 to 8.4, which is useful for indicating the pH of strongly acidic environments. The colorimetric system exhibits a linear range from 0.64 to 2.38 and 2.5 to 6.5. A colorimetric card was designed based on the color changes of this system as a function of pH values. This work provides a colorimetric assay method for the simple, rapid, and visual indication of pH which can be used to understand the biological processes in physiology and pathology fields.

Stoichiometry-Controlled Synthesis of Nanoparticulate Mixed-Metal Oxyhydroxide Oxygen Evolving Catalysts by Electrochemistry in Aqueous Nanodroplets

Mixed-metal oxyhydroxides-especially those of Ni and Fe-are one of the most active classes of materials known for catalyzing the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, nanoparticulate mixed metal oxyhydroxides (of Ni, Fe, and Co) were prepared on an electrode surface by electrochemical reaction of a precursor solution encapsulated in aqueous nanodroplets (AnDs), with each of the droplets containing 10 s of attoliters of fluid. Electrode reactions and synthesis can be monitored in situ by electrochemistry as single AnD stochastically lands and interacts with the working electrode. Resultant metal oxyhydroxide nanoparticles can be size and composition controlled precisely by modulating the precursor solution stored in the AnD. Nanoparticulate metal oxyhydroxides were implemented as catalysts for the OER and exhibited superior catalysis compared to their thin-film counterparts, demonstrating a hundred-thousand-fold enhancement in atom efficiency at comparable turnover rates.

Regenerable Acidity of Graphene Oxide in Promoting Multicomponent Organic Synthesis

The Brønsted acidity of graphene oxide (GO) materials has shown promising activity in organic synthesis. However, roles and functionality of Lewis acid sites remain elusive. Herein, we reported a carbocatalytic approach utilizing both Brønsted and Lewis acid sites in GOs as heterogeneous promoters in a series of multicomponent synthesis of triazoloquinazolinone compounds. The GOs possessing the highest degree of oxidation, also having the highest amounts of Lewis acid sites, enable optimal yields (up to 95%) under mild and non-toxic reaction conditions (85 °C in EtOH). The results of FT-IR spectroscopy, temperature-programed decomposition mass spectrometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy identified that the apparent Lewis acidity via basal plane epoxide ring opening, on top of the saturated Brønsted acidic carboxylic groups, is responsible for the enhanced carbocatalytic activities involving Knoevenagel condensation pathway. Recycled GO can be effectively regenerated to reach 97% activity of fresh GO, supporting the recognition of GO as pseudocatalyst in organic synthesis.

Autoluminescence-Free Prostate-Specific Antigen Detection by Persistent Luminous Nanorods and Au@Ag@SiO2 Nanoparticles

The sensitive detection of biomarker with high selectivity and accuracy is of remarkable significance for the early screening and clinical diagnosis of malignant cancer. Persistent phosphors play a role in illumination-free biosensing owing to their unparalleled optical properties, which produces long-lasting luminescence without the illumination to eliminate the interference of autofluorescence and scattering light from biological matrix. In this study, ZnGeO:Mo persistent luminescence nanorods (PLNRs) were prepared and showed tunable luminescence intensity and decay patterns. An excitation-free luminescent aptasensor was proposed for the detection of prostate specific antigen (PSA) by using ZnGeO:Mo PLNRs as probes and Au@Ag@SiO₂ nanoparticles as quenchers. Under optimal conditions, the limit of detection for PSA was 9.2 pg mL^-1. This work creates a possibility for the preparation of multiplex colored persistent luminescence nanomaterials with desired decay patterns for multiple bioassay and time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay.

Subtiligase-Catalyzed Peptide Ligation

Subtiligase-catalyzed peptide ligation is a powerful approach for site-specific protein bioconjugation, synthesis and semisynthesis of proteins and peptides, and chemoproteomic analysis of cellular N termini. Here, we provide a comprehensive review of the subtiligase technology, including its development, applications, and impacts on protein science. We highlight key advantages and limitations of the tool and compare it to other peptide ligase enzymes. Finally, we provide a perspective on future applications and challenges and how they may be addressed.

Calculating adsorption isotherms using Lennard Jones particle density distributions

The computation of particle density distributions in pore channels is a fundamental post process practice in molecular adsorption simulations. The distributions, although not appropriate for direct experimental interrogation, when expressed in variable temperature, may be used to evaluate thermodynamic properties. As with molecular simulations, we can spotlight any frame or region of interest inside the computational cell, the distributions and subsequently the thermodynamic evaluations can be pore or site specific. This allows us to establish correlations for the adsorption capacity, on different pore partitions and surface textures and compare strengths of explicit interactions. We confirm this assumption using adsorption simulations of Lennard Jones particles such as argon in the dual cylindrical cavity of ZIF-69. We initiate the computations from the density distribution functions and reproduce full curves of adsorption isotherms which correlate well with the direct simulations. The computations are fast and implemented using linear van' t Hoff plots for the surface coverage at a sequence of pressures.

Highly Efficient Multifunctional Co-N-C Electrocatalysts with Synergistic Effects of Co-N Moieties and Co Metallic Nanoparticles Encapsulated in a N-Doped Carbon Matrix for Water-Splitting and Oxygen Redox Reactions

Electrochemical water-splitting reactions (hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER)) and oxygen redox reactions (oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and OER) are core processes for electrochemical water-splitting devices, rechargeable metal-air batteries, and regenerative fuel cells. Developing highly efficient non-noble multifunctional catalysts in the same electrolyte is an open challenge. Herein, efficient Co-N-C electrocatalysts with a mixed structure comprising Co-N moieties and Co nanoparticles encapsulated in a N-doped carbon layer were prepared via pyrolysis of a new structure of Co-coordinated bis(imino)pyridine polymer constructed by 2,6-diacetylpyridine and 3,3'-diaminobenzidine. Results demonstrate that Co ion sources have a remarkable impact on the final Co-N-C performance. The Co-N-C catalyst prepared using cobalt acetate as a precursor displays remarkable overall multifunctional performance. It needs only a cell voltage of 1.66 V (obtained from the half-cell test) for the water-splitting reaction (HER/OER) to reach 10 mA·cm^-2 in 1.0 M KOH, and the overall oxygen redox activity (OER/ORR) is 0.72 V in 0.1 M KOH, outperforming the reported nonprecious metal catalysts. The excellent activity is attributable to the synergistic effects between active sites with encapsulated metallic Co for HER and OER and Co-N moieties for ORR.

Strategies for Development of a Next-Generation Protein Sequencing Platform

Proteomic analysis can be a critical bottleneck in cellular characterization. The current paradigm relies primarily on mass spectrometry of peptides and affinity reagents (i.e., antibodies), both of which require a priori knowledge of the sample. An unbiased protein sequencing method, with a dynamic range that covers the full range of protein concentrations in proteomes, would revolutionize the field of proteomics, allowing a more facile characterization of novel gene products and subcellular complexes. To this end, several new platforms based on single-molecule protein-sequencing approaches have been proposed. This review summarizes four of these approaches, highlighting advantages, limitations, and challenges for each method towards advancing as a core technology for next-generation protein sequencing.

Ferroptosis Accompanied by •OH Generation and Cytoplasmic Viscosity Increase Revealed via Dual-Functional Fluorescence Probe

Ferroptosis, a new form of regulated cell death, results from the iron-dependent accumulation of lipid peroxides that are associated with reactive oxygen species. However, it remains unclear how hydroxyl radical (^•OH) and cellular microenvironments such as viscosity alter in this process. Herein, we characterize for the first time the changing behavior of ^•OH and cytoplasmic viscosity during ferroptosis using a dual-functional fluorescence probe (H-V) that is designed via the molecular rotor strategy and the unique aromatic hydroxylation of ^•OH. Probe H-V shows completely separate spectral responses to ^•OH and viscosity with high sensitivity and selectivity, thereby achieving the detection of ^•OH and viscosity in two independent channels without spectral cross-interference. With the probe we find that ferroptosis is accompanied by significant ^•OH generation and cytoplasmic viscosity increase. Most notably, the raised ^•OH comprises the majority of the total reactive oxygen species in ferroptosis. H-V is biocompatible, ready to prepare, and may be expected to be used in the study of viscosity and ^•OH detection in more biosystems.

Challenges for the Periodic Systems of Elements: Chemical, Historical and Mathematical Perspectives

We celebrate 150 years of periodic systems that reached their maturity in the 1860s. They began as pedagogical efforts to project corpuses of substances on the similarity and order relationships of the chemical elements. However, these elements are not the canned substances wrongly displayed in many periodic tables, but rather the abstract preserved entities in compound transformations. We celebrate the systems, rather than their tables or ultimate table. The periodic law, we argue, is not an all-encompassing achievement, as it does not apply to every property of all elements and compounds. Periodic systems have been generalised as ordered hypergraphs, which solves the long-lasting question on the mathematical structure of the systems. In this essay, it is shown that these hypergraphs may solve current issues such as order reversals in super-heavy elements and lack of system predictive power. We discuss research in extending the limits of the systems in the super-heavy-atom region and draw attention to other limits: the antimatter region and the limit arising from compounds under extreme conditions. As systems depend on the known chemical substances (chemical space) and such a space grows exponentially, we wonder whether systems still aim at projecting knowledge of compounds on the relationships among the elements. We claim that systems are not based on compounds anymore, rather on 20th century projections of the 1860s systems of elements on systems of atoms. These projections bring about oversimplifications based on entities far from being related to compounds. A linked oversimplification is the myth of vertical group similarity, which raises questions on the approaches to locate new elements in the system. Finally, we propose bringing back chemistry to the systems by exploring similarity and order relationships of elements using the current information of the chemical space. We ponder whether 19th century periodic systems are still there or whether they have faded away, leaving us with an empty 150^th celebration.

Recyclable DNA-Derived Polymeric Sensor: Ultrasensitive Detection of Hg(II) Ions Modulated by Morphological Changes

Going beyond organic solvent as the solubilizer for small-molecular organic probes motivates exploration of water-soluble polymeric sensors. In this respect, dye-derived thermal-responsive polymeric sensors are an attractive direction, but for its practical application, it is limited by sensor recycling because only irreversible change in the structure of the recognition unit for many sensors can trigger the appearance of the detection signal. Here, we established the oligonucleotide-derived thermal-responsive polymeric sensor, TBC-P1, which overcame this fundamental limitation. The TBC-P1 sensor was based on reversible binding between oligonucleotides and Hg²⁺ ions, and easy sensor separation via tuning temperature, achieving the Hg²⁺ detection in a cost-effective and green manner. The TBC-P1 sensor displayed specific and rapid sensing properties toward Hg²⁺ ions in pure aqueous media via turn-off fluorescence emission, with a limit of detection as low as 0.65 nM (much lower than the presently reported dye-derived polymeric sensors). This high detection sensitivity was further enhanced (with LOD = 0.17 nM) via warming to yield spherical micelles, in which the oligonucleotide-containing thermoresponsive PNIPAM block forming a hydrophobic core amplified the fluorescence signals. Treating the Hg²⁺-trapped micelles with cysteine (Cys) led to competition-induced release of these combined Hg²⁺ ions and then thermally precipitating and recycling polymeric sensor TBC-P1. This oligonucleotide-derived thermalresponsive polymeric sensor will open a universal avenue for sensor recycling, which will achieve the goal of reducing cost and improving detection sensitivity of sensors.

Precise Cross-Dimensional Regulation of the Structure of a Photoreversible DNA Nanoswitch

In this study, an accurately and digitally regulated allosteric nanoswitch based on the conformational control of two DNA hairpins was developed. By switching between UV irradiation and blue light conditions, the second molecular beacon (H#2) would bind/separate with a repression sequence (RES) via the introduced PTG molecules (a photosensitive azobenzene derivative), resulting in the target aptamer sequence in the first molecular beacon (H#1) not being able/being able to hold the stem-loop configuration, hence losing/regaining the ability to bind with the target. Importantly, we successfully monitor conformation changes of the nanoswitch by an elegant mathematical model for connecting K_i (the dissociation constant between RES and H#2) with K_d (the overall equilibrium constant of the nanoswitch binding the target), hence realizing "observing" DNA structure across dimensions from "structural visualization" to digitization and, accurately, digitally regulating DNA structure from digitization to "structural visualization".

Transgenic microalgae as bioreactors

Microalgae are unicellular organisms that act as the crucial primary producers all over the world, typically found in marine and freshwater environments. Most of them can live photo-autotrophically, reproduce rapidly, and accumulate biomass in a short period efficiently. To adapt to the uninterrupted change of the environment, they evolve and differentiate continuously. As a result, some of them evolve special abilities such as toleration of extreme environment, generation of sophisticated structure to adapt to the environment, and avoid predators. Microalgae are believed to be promising bioreactors because of their high lipid and pigment contents. Genetic engineering technologies have given revolutions in the microalgal industry, which decoded the secrets of microalgal genes, express recombinant genes in microalgal genomes, and largely soar the accumulation of interested components in transgenic microalgae. However, owing to several obstructions, the industry of transgenic microalgae is still immature. Here, we provide an overview to emphasize the advantage and imperfection of the existing transgenic microalgal bioreactors.

Arylene Ethynylene-Functionalized Bithiazole-Based Zinc Polymers for Ultraefficient Photocatalytic Activity

Polymers 4 containing poly(arylene ethynylene) were synthesized and characterized systematically. Among them, 4c exhibited a remarkable H2 evolution rate (14.32 mmol h-1 g-1) with visible-light irradiation, lasting 72 h in different water qualities; the corresponding apparent quantum yield was 11.6% at 450 nm.

Furthermore, in the absence of ethylene, silene complex 6^Bu,H slowly isomerized to the silylene hydride complex [(dmpe)₂MnH( Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> SiEtⁿBu)] (3^Bu,Et). Reactions of 4^R with ethylene likely proceed via low-coordinate silyl {[(dmpe)₂Mn(SiH₂R)] (2^Ph: R = Ph, 2^Bu: R = ⁿBu)} or silylene hydride {[(dmpe)₂MnH( Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> SiHR)] (3^Ph,H: R = Ph, 3^Bu,H: R = ⁿBu)} intermediates accessed from 4^R by H₃SiR elimination. DFT calculations and high temperature NMR spectra support the accessibility of these intermediates, and reactions of 4^R with isonitriles or N-heterocyclic carbenes yielded the silyl isonitrile complexes [(dmpe)₂Mn(SiH₂R)(CNR′)] (7a–d: R = Ph or ⁿBu; R′ = o-xylyl or ^tBu), and NHC-stabilized silylene hydride complexes [(dmpe)₂MnH{ Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> SiHR(NHC)}] (8a–d: R = Ph or ⁿBu; NHC = 1,3-diisopropylimidazolin-2-ylidene or 1,3,4,5-tetramethyl-4-imidazolin-2-ylidene), respectively, all of which were crystallographically characterized. Silyl, silylene and silene complexes in this work were accessed via reactions of [(dmpe)₂MnH(C₂H₄)] (1) with hydrosilanes, in some cases followed by ethylene. Therefore, ethylene (C₂H₄ and C₂D₄) hydrosilylation was investigated using [(dmpe)₂MnH(C₂H₄)] (1) as a pre-catalyst, resulting in stepwise conversion of primary to secondary to tertiary hydrosilanes. Various catalytically active manganese-containing species were observed during catalysis, including silylene and silene complexes, and a catalytic cycle is proposed.

In search of tris(trimethylsilylcyclopentadienyl) thorium

Reduction of Cp'₃ThCl, Cp'₃ThBr, and Cp'₃ThI (Cp' = C₅H₄SiMe₃) with potassium graphite generates dark blue solutions with reactivity and spectroscopic properties consistent with the formation of Cp'₃Th. The EPR and UV-visible spectra of the solutions are similar to those of crystallographically-characterized tris(cyclopentadienyl) Th(iii) complexes: [C₅H₃(SiMe₃)₂]₃Th, (C₅Me₄H)₃Th, (C₅^tBu₂H₃)₃Th, and (C₅Me₅)₃Th. Density functional theory (DFT) analysis indicates that the UV-visible spectrum is consistent with Cp'₃Th and not [Cp'₃ThBr]^1-. Although single crystals of Cp'₃Th have not been isolated, the blue solution reacts with Me₃SiCl, I₂, and HC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CPh to afford products expected from Cp'₃Th, namely, Cp'₃ThCl, Cp'₃ThI, and Cp'₃Th(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CPh), respectively. Reactions with MeI give mixtures of Cp'₃ThI and Cp'₃ThMe. Evidence for further reduction of the blue solutions to a Cp'-ligated Th(ii) complex has not been observed. The crystal structures of Cp'₃ThMe and (Cp'₃Th)₂(μ-O) were also determined as part of these studies.

Efficient Hydrogen Production from Methanol Using a Single-Site Pt1/CeO2 Catalyst

Hydrogen is regarded as an attractive alternative energy carrier due to its high gravimetric energy density and only water production upon combustion. However, due to its low volumetric energy density, there are still some challenges in practical hydrogen storage and transportation. In the past decade, using chemical bonds of liquid organic molecules as hydrogen carriers to generate hydrogen in situ provided a feasible method to potentially solve this problem. Research efforts on liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) seek practical carrier systems and advanced catalytic materials that have the potential to reduce costs, increase reaction rate, and provide a more efficient catalytic hydrogen generation/storage process. In this work, we used methanol as a hydrogen carrier to release hydrogen in situ with the single-site Pt₁/CeO₂ catalyst. Moreover, in this reaction, compared with traditional nanoparticle catalysts, the single site catalyst displays excellent hydrogen generation efficiency, 40 times higher than 2.5 nm Pt/CeO₂ sample, and 800 times higher compared to 7.0 nm Pt/CeO₂ sample. This in-depth study highlights the benefits of single-site catalysts and paves the way for further rational design of highly efficient catalysts for sustainable energy storage applications.

Self-Healing Graphene-Reinforced Composite for Highly Efficient Oil/Water Separation

One of the most pervasive environmental problems is oily sewage; emerging materials are needed that could effectively solve this global challenge. Special wetting materials typically combine micro/nanoscale hierarchical structures with a low surface energy, which could produce superhydrophobic performance and these superhydrophobic materials are very important for a wide variety of applications, including self-cleaning and antiadhesives. However, the majority of these manmade materials still suffer from poor durability, which seriously hinders their practical applications. A better choice is that use of supramolecular materials with self-healing ability, which could provide an efficient method to solve materials poor durability problem. However, lightweight materials with special wettbility and self-healing still remain a challenge. In this work, we confine polyborosiloxane (PBS) in an ultralight graphene network to form a robust, special function graphene foam that has the ability to self-repair. Hydroxyl terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) and boric acid as the as raw material were used to synthesis PBS at room temperature. The as-prepared composite network could be compressed and their properties fully restored without an external stimulus after being subjected to repeated damage. In addition, the prepared composite foam retains the porosity of the original graphene foam. The present work suggests encouraging applications of the self-healing graphene/PBS foam in water/organic solvent separations.

Achievements, Challenges, and Prospects of Calcium Batteries

This Review flows from past attempts to develop a (rechargeable) battery technology based on Ca via crucial breakthroughs to arrive at a comprehensive discussion of the current challenges at hand. The realization of a rechargeable Ca battery technology primarily requires identification and development of suitable electrodes and electrolytes, which is why we here cover the progress starting from the fundamental electrode/electrolyte requirements, concepts, materials, and compositions employed and finally a critical analysis of the state-of-the-art, allowing us to conclude with the particular roadblocks still existing. As for crucial breakthroughs, reversible plating and stripping of calcium at the metal-anode interface was achieved only recently and for very specific electrolyte formulations. Therefore, while much of the current research aims at finding suitable cathodes to achieve proof-of-concept for a full Ca battery, the spectrum of electrolytes researched is also expanded. Compatibility of cell components is essential, and to ensure this, proper characterization is needed, which requires design of a multitude of reliable experimental setups and sometimes methodology development beyond that of other next generation battery technologies. Finally, we conclude with recommendations for future strategies to make best use of the current advances in materials science combined with computational design, electrochemistry, and battery engineering, all to propel the Ca battery technology to reality and ultimately reach its full potential for energy storage.

A Redox-Switchable Molecular Zipper

The design and synthesis of artificial molecular switches (AMSs) displaying architectures of increased complexity would constitute significant progress in meeting the challenging task of realizing artificial molecular machines (AMMs). Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of a molecular shuttle composed of a cyclobis(paraquat-4,4'-biphenylene) cyclophane ring and a dumbbell incorporating a cyclobis(paraquat-m-phenylene) cyclophane "head" and a bifurcated, tawse-like "tail" composed of two oligoether chains, each containing a 1,5-dioxynaphthalene ring. In its reduced state the ring-in-ring recognition motif, between the meta and para bisradical dicationic cyclophanes (rings), defines the [2]rotaxane, whereas in the oxidized state, the cyclobis(paraquat-4,4'-biphenylene) cyclophane encircles the two 1,5-dioxynaphthalene rings in the bifurcated "tail". The redox-controlled molecular shuttling, which can be likened to the action of a zipper in the macroscopic world, exhibits slow kinetics dampened by the opening and closing of the bifurcated "tail" of the molecular shuttle. Cyclic voltammetry reveals that this slow shuttling is associated with electrochemical hysteresis.

Tuning the Chemical Environment within the UiO-66-NH2 Nanocages for Charge-Dependent Contaminant Uptake and Selectivity

The remarkable water stability of Zr-carboxylate-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) stimulated considerable interest toward their utilization in aqueous phase applications. The origin of such stability is probed here through pH titration and pK_a modeling. A unique feature of the Zr₆(μ₃-OH)₄(μ₃-O)₄(RCO₂)₁₂ cluster is the Zr-bridging oxo/hydroxyl groups, demonstrating several pK_a values that appear to provide for the water stability at a wide range of pH. Accordingly, the tunability of the cage/surface charge of the MOF can feasibly be controlled through careful adjustment of solution pH. Such high stability, and facile control over cage/surface charge, can additionally be augmented through introducing chemical functionalities lining the cages of the MOF, specifically amine groups in the UiO-66-NH₂ presented herein. The variable protonation states of the Zr cluster and the pendant amino groups, their H-bond donor/acceptor characteristics, and their electrostatic interactions with guest molecules were effectively utilized in controlled experiments to demonstrate high uptake of model guest molecules (137 mg/g for Cr(VI), 1275 mg/g for methylene blue, and 909 mg/g for methyl orange). Additionally, a practical form of the silica-supported MOF, UiO-66-NH₂@SiO₂, constructed in under 2 h reaction time, is described, generating a true platform microporous sorbent for practical use in demanding applications.

Sustained activity of novel THIOMAB antibody-antibiotic conjugate against Staphylococcus aureus in a mouse model: Longitudinal pharmacodynamic assessment by bioluminescence imaging

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) infections are a leading cause of death by an infectious agent. Survival within host phagocytic cells is one mechanism by which S. aureus evades antibiotic treatment. A novel THIOMAB™ antibody-antibiotic conjugate (TAC) strategy was developed to kill S. aureus intracellularly and mitigate the spread of infection. In this report, we used a longitudinal whole-body bioluminescence imaging method to study the antibacterial dynamics of TAC alone or in combination with vancomycin in a mouse infection model. Injections of stably luminescent S. aureus bacteria into mice resulted in exponential increases in whole body bioluminescence with a reduction in body weight and survival rate. Vancomycin, a standard-of-care antibiotic, suppressed bacterial growth in mice. However, bacterial growth rebounded in these animals once treatment was discontinued. In contrast, single dose of TAC showed rapid reduction of bioluminescence intensity, which persisted for up to 19 days. The combination of TAC and vancomycin achieved a more sustained and significantly greater reduction of bioluminescence compared with vancomycin alone. In summary, the present study showed an imaging method to longitudinally assess antibacterial drug dynamics in mice and demonstrated that TAC monotherapy or in combination with vancomycin had superior and sustained activity compared to vancomycin alone.

Computationally generated maps of surface structures and catalytic activities for alloy phase diagrams

To facilitate the rational design of alloy catalysts, we introduce a method for rapidly calculating the structure and catalytic properties of a substitutional alloy surface that is in equilibrium with the underlying bulk phase. We implement our method by developing a way to generate surface cluster expansions that explicitly account for the lattice parameter of the bulk structure. This approach makes it possible to computationally map the structure of an alloy surface and statistically sample adsorbate binding energies at every point in the alloy phase diagram. When combined with a method for predicting catalytic activities from adsorbate binding energies, maps of catalytic activities at every point in the phase diagram can be created, enabling the identification of synthesis conditions likely to result in highly active catalysts. We demonstrate our approach by analyzing Pt-rich Pt-Ni catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction, finding 2 regions in the phase diagram that are predicted to result in highly active catalysts. Our analysis indicates that the Pt3Ni(111) surface, which has the highest known specific activity for the oxygen reduction reaction, is likely able to achieve its high activity through the formation of an intermetallic phase with L12 order. We use the generated surface structure and catalytic activity maps to demonstrate how the intermetallic nature of this phase leads to high catalytic activity and discuss how the underlying principles can be used in catalysis design. We further discuss the importance of surface phases and demonstrate how they can dramatically affect catalytic activity.

Facile Synthesis of Quaternary Structurally Ordered L12-Pt(Fe, Co, Ni)3 Nanoparticles with Low Content of Platinum as Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction Electrocatalysts

Synthesis of electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with not only prominent electrocatalytic performance but also a low amount of Pt is the urgent challenge in the popularization of fuel cells. In this work, through a facile synthetic strategy of spray dehydration on a solid surface and annealing process, we demonstrate the first manufacture of quaternary structurally ordered PtM₃ (M = transition metal) intermetallic nanoparticles (NPs), Pt(Fe, Co, Ni)₃, in order to lower the content of Pt. The atomic contents of Pt, Fe, Co, and Ni are equal and the chemical structure of Pt(Fe, Co, Ni)₃ is a cubic L1₂-ordered structure. L1₂-Pt(Fe, Co, Ni)₃/C electrocatalysts exhibit enhanced electrocatalytic performance toward ORR with mass activity (MA) 6.6 times higher than the commercial Pt/C and a minimal loss of 17% in MA and 1.5% loss in specific activity (SA) after 10 000 potential cycles at 0.9 V. Furthermore, the stability behavior is confirmed to be attributed to the coaction of particle sizes and the ordering effect. Compared with traditional Pt-based electrocatalysts in the stoichiometric forms of Pt₃M and PtM, L1₂-Pt(Fe, Co, Ni)₃ intermetallic NPs exhibit excellent performance and higher cost effectiveness. Moreover, this work also proposes a facile and effective synthetic strategy for manufacturing multicomponent Pt-based electrocatalysts for ORR.
