Abstract
Although the molecular chemistry of thorium is dominated by the +4 oxidation state accounts of Th(iii) complexes have continued to increase in frequency since the first structurally characterised example was reported thirty years ago. The isolation of the first Th(ii) complexes in 2015 and exciting recent Th(iii) and Th(ii) reactivity studies both indicate that this long-neglected area is set to undergo a rapid expansion in research activity over the next decade, as previously seen since the turn of the millennium for analogous U(iii) small molecule activation chemistry. In this perspective article, we review synthetic routes to Th(iii) and Th(ii) complexes and summarise their distinctive physical properties. We provide a near-chronological discussion of these systems, focusing on structurally characterised examples, and cover complementary theoretical studies that rationalise electronic structures. All reactivity studies of Th(iii) and Th(ii) complexes that have been reported to date are described in detail.

Abstract
The first use of a dinuclear UIII/UIII complex in the activation of small molecules is reported. The octadentate Schiff-base pyrrole, anthracene-hinged 'Pacman' ligand LA combines two strongly reducing UIII centres and three borohydride ligands in [M(THF)4][{U(BH4)}2(μ-BH4)(LA)(THF)2] 1-M, (M = Li, Na, K). The two borohydride ligands bound to uranium outside the macrocyclic cleft are readily substituted by aryloxide ligands, resulting in a single, weakly-bound, encapsulated endo group 1 metal borohydride bridging the two UIII centres in [{U(OAr)}2(μ-MBH4)(LA)(THF)2] 2-M (OAr = OC6H2t Bu3-2,4,6, M = Na, K). X-ray crystallographic analysis shows that, for 2-K, in addition to the endo-BH4 ligand the potassium counter-cation is also incorporated into the cleft through η5-interactions with the pyrrolides instead of extraneous donor solvent. As such, 2-K has a significantly higher solubility in non-polar solvents and a wider U-U separation compared to the 'ate' complex 1. The cooperative reducing capability of the two UIII centres now enforced by the large and relatively flexible macrocycle is compared for the two complexes, recognising that the borohydrides can provide additional reducing capability, and that the aryloxide-capped 2-K is constrained to reactions within the cleft. The reaction between 1-Na and S8 affords an insoluble, presumably polymeric paramagnetic complex with bridging uranium sulfides, while that with CS2 results in oxidation of each UIII to the notably high UV oxidation state, forming the unusual trithiocarbonate (CS3)2- as a ligand in [{U(CS3)}2(μ-κ2:κ2-CS3)(LA)] (4). The reaction between 2-K and S8 results in quantitative substitution of the endo-KBH4 by a bridging persulfido (S2)2- group and oxidation of each UIII to UIV, yielding [{U(OAr)}2(μ-κ2:κ2-S2)(LA)] (5). The reaction of 2-K with CS2 affords a thermally unstable adduct which is tentatively assigned as containing a carbon disulfido (CS2)2- ligand bridging the two U centres (6a), but only the mono-bridged sulfido (S)2- complex [{U(OAr)}2(μ-S)(LA)] (6) is isolated. The persulfido complex (5) can also be synthesised from the mono-bridged sulfido complex (6) by the addition of another equivalent of sulfur.

Abstract
The reactivity of terminal uranium(V/VI) nitrides with CE2 (E=O, S) is presented. Well-defined C=E cleavage followed by zero-, one-, and two-electron redox events is observed. The uranium(V) nitride [U(TrenTIPS )(N)][K(B15C5)2 ] (1, TrenTIPS =N(CH2 CH2 NSiiPr3 )3 ; B15C5=benzo-15-crown-5) reacts with CO2 to give [U(TrenTIPS )(O)(NCO)][K(B15C5)2 ] (3), whereas the uranium(VI) nitride [U(TrenTIPS )(N)] (2) reacts with CO2 to give isolable [U(TrenTIPS )(O)(NCO)] (4); complex 4 rapidly decomposes to known [U(TrenTIPS )(O)] (5) with concomitant formation of N2 and CO proposed, with the latter trapped as a vanadocene adduct. In contrast, 1 reacts with CS2 to give [U(TrenTIPS )(κ2 -CS3 )][K(B15C5)2 ] (6), 2, and [K(B15C5)2 ][NCS] (7), whereas 2 reacts with CS2 to give [U(TrenTIPS )(NCS)] (8) and "S", with the latter trapped as Ph3 PS. Calculated reaction profiles reveal outer-sphere reactivity for uranium(V) but inner-sphere mechanisms for uranium(VI); despite the wide divergence of products the initial activation of CE2 follows mechanistically related pathways, providing insight into the factors of uranium oxidation state, chalcogen, and NCE groups that govern the subsequent divergent redox reactions that include common one-electron reactions and a less-common two-electron redox event. Caution, we suggest, is warranted when utilising CS2 as a reactivity surrogate for CO2 .

Abstract
Improving our comprehension of diverse CO2 activation pathways is of vital importance for the widespread future utilization of this abundant greenhouse gas. CO2 activation by uranium(III) complexes is now relatively well understood, with oxo/carbonate formation predominating as CO2 is readily reduced to CO, but isolated thorium(III) CO2 activation is unprecedented. We show that the thorium(III) complex, [Th(Cp′′)3] (1, Cp′′={C5H3(SiMe3)2‐1,3}), reacts with CO2 to give the mixed oxalate‐carboxylate thorium(IV) complex [{Th(Cp′′)2[κ2‐O2C{C5H3‐3,3′‐(SiMe3)2}]}2(μ‐κ2:κ2‐C2O4)] (3). The concomitant formation of oxalate and carboxylate is unique for CO2 activation, as in previous examples either reduction or insertion is favored to yield a single product. Therefore, thorium(III) CO2 activation can differ from better understood uranium(III) chemistry.

Abstract
The mechanistic investigation of the reductive coupling vs. reductive disproportionation of CO2 using magnesium(i) dimers bearing tripodal ligands, [{Mg[κ(3)-N,N',O-(ArNCMe)2(OCCPh2)CH]}2] (Ar = C6H3Et2-2,6) has been carried out using DFT computational methods. We also elucidated the reduction of N2O to form a μ-oxo magnesium complex which upon addition of CO2 affords the experimentally observed carbonate complex. Finally, the interesting reactivity towards SO2 is considered and some insights into the mechanistic aspects of such activation/homo-coupling reaction are given for both "Nacnac" substituted magnesium(i) dimers ([{((Dip)Nacnac)Mg}2] ((Dip)Nacnac = [(DipNCMe)2CH](-), Dip = C6H3Pr(i)2-2,6)) and those bearing tripodal ligands. The analogy between the activation chemistry of low-valent f-block metal complexes with that of magnesium systems is highlighted.

Abstract
Uranium nitrides are important materials with potential for application as fuels for nuclear power generation, and as highly active catalysts. Molecular nitride compounds could provide important insight into the nature of the uranium-nitride bond, but currently little is known about their reactivity. In this study, we found that a complex containing a nitride bridging two uranium centers and a cesium cation readily cleaved the C≡O bond (one of the strongest bonds in nature) under ambient conditions. The product formed has a [CsU2 (μ-CN)(μ-O)] core, thus indicating that the three cations cooperate to cleave CO. Moreover, the addition of MeOTf to the nitride complex led to an exceptional valence disproportionation of the CsU(IV) -N-U(IV) core to yield CsU(III) (OTf) and [MeN=U(V) ] fragments. The important role of multimetallic cooperativity in both reactions is illustrated by the computed reaction mechanisms.

Abstract
The S-transfer reaction from Ph3PS to the tetrasiloxide U(iii) complex [U(OSi(OtBu)3)4K] affords a stable U(iv) triply bonded terminal sulfide that can be protonated to yield a U(iv) doubly bonded terminal hydrosulfide.
The reactions of the tetrasiloxide U(iii) complexes [U(OSi(OtBu)3)4K] and [U(OSi(OtBu)3)4][K18c6] with 0.5 equiv. of triphenylphosphine sulfide led to reductive S-transfer reactions, affording the U(iv) sulfide complexes [SU(OSi(OtBu)3)4K2]2, 1, and [{SU(OSi(OtBu)3)4K2}2(μ-18c6)], 2, with concomitant formation of the U(iv) complex [U(OSi(OtBu)3)4]. Addition of 1 equiv. of 2.2.2-cryptand to complex 1 resulted in the isolation of a terminal sulfide complex, [SU(OSi(OtBu)3)4K][Kcryptand], 3. The crucial role of the K+ Lewis acid in these reductive sulfur transfer reactions was confirmed, since the formation of complex 3 from the reaction of the U(iii) complex [U(OSi(OtBu)3)4][Kcryptand] and 0.5 equiv. of PPh3S was not possible. Reactivity studies of the U(iv) sulfide complexes showed that the sulfide is easily transferred to CO2 and CS2 to afford S-functionalized products. Moreover, we have found that the sulfide provides a convenient precursor for the synthesis of the corresponding U(iv) hydrosulfide, {[(SH)U(OSi(OtBu)3)4][K18c6]}, 5, after protonation with PyHCl. Finally, DFT calculations were performed to investigate the nature of the U–S bond in complexes 1, 3 and 5. Based on various analyses, triple-bond character was suggested for the U–S bond in complexes 1 and 3, while double-bond character was determined for the U–SH bond in complex 5.

Abstract
We report herein the actinide-mediated insertion of E-H bonds (E = C, N, P, S) into various heterocumulenes including carbodiimides, isocyanates, and isothiocyanates. The precatalysts are prepared by a simple, one-pot procedure using readily available starting materials, and challenging insertions are achieved with excellent selectivity in short reaction times. Spectroscopic data are utilised to propose the active catalytic mechanism and derive thermodynamic activation parameters, which are described in this study. The only example of an actinide-mediated C-H bond insertion into a carbon-heteroatom bond is presented within this study.

Abstract
New tris-amidinate actinide (Th, U) complexes containing a rare O-bound terminal phosphaethynolate (OCP - ) ligand were synthesized and fully characterized. The cyanate (OCN - ) and thiocyanate (SCN - ) analogs were prepared for comparison and feature a preferential N-coordination to the actinide metals. The Th(amid)3(OCP) complex reacts with Ni(COD)2 to yield the heterobimetallic adduct (amid) 3 Th(μ-η 1 (O):η 2 (C,P)-OCP)Ni(COD) featuring an unprecedented reduced (OCP - ) bent fragment bridging the two metals.

Abstract
We describe the stable and isolable dimetalloxycarbene [(TiX3 )2 (μ2 -CO2 -κ(2) C,O:κO')] 5, where X=N-(tert-butyl)-3,5-dimethylanilide, which is stabilized by fluctuating μ2 -κ(2) C,O:κ(1) O' coordination of the carbene carbon to both titanium centers of the dinuclear complex 5, as shown by variable-temperature NMR studies. Quantum chemical calculations on the unmodified molecule indicated a higher energy of only +10.5 kJ mol(-1) for the μ2 -κ(1) O:κ(1) O' bonding mode of the free dimetalloxycarbene compared to the μ2 -κ(2) C,O:κ(1) O' bonding mode of the masked dimetalloxycarbene. The parent cationic bridging formate complex [(TiX3 )2 (μ2 -OCHO-κO:κO')][B(C6 F5)4], 4[B(C6 F5)4], was simply deprotonated with the strong base K(N(SiMe3 )2 ) to give 5. Complex 5 reacts smoothly with CO2 to generate the bridging oxalate complex [(TiX3 )2 (μ2 -C2 O4 -κO:κO'')], 6, in a C-C bond formation reaction commonly anticipated for oxalate formation by reductive coupling of CO2 on low-valent transition-metal complexes.

Abstract
Prior to the year 2000, non-aqueous uranium chemistry mainly involved metallocene and classical alkyl, amide, or alkoxide compounds as well as established carbene, imido, and oxo derivatives. Since then, there has been a resurgence of the area, and dramatic developments of supporting ligands and multiply bonded ligand types, small-molecule activation, and magnetism have been reported. This Review 1) introduces the reader to some of the specialist theories of the area, 2) covers all-important starting materials, 3) surveys contemporary ligand classes installed at uranium, including alkyl, aryl, arene, carbene, amide, imide, nitride, alkoxide, aryloxide, and oxo compounds, 4) describes advances in the area of single-molecule magnetism, and 5) summarizes the coordination and activation of small molecules, including carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, dinitrogen, white phosphorus, and alkanes.

Abstract
Multimetallic cooperativity plays an important role in U(iii) mediated CS2reduction: the reductive dimerization of CS2occurs preferentially at a heterodimetallic U, K complex while the reductive disproportionation pathway is favoured by the “ate” complex [K(18c6)][U(OSi(OtBu)3)4].

Abstract
Theoretical mechanistic calculations (DFT) on the reactivity of [{((Dip)Nacnac)Mg}2] ((Dip)Nacnac = [(DipNCMe)2CH](-), Dip = C6H3(i)Pr2-2,6) towards CO2 were carried out in order to rationalise the experimental formation of a carbonate (major product) and an oxalate (minor product). Despite its apparent similarity to f-element reactivity, the magnesium(I) bimetallic complex yields the carbonate through a concerted type of pathway rather than via a transient oxo-bridged intermediate. The latter is destabilised due to the electrostatic repulsion between the two magnesium centres. The small energy barrier difference between carbonate and oxalate formation (~10 kcal mol(-1)) may allow for the experimentally observed reactivity to be tuned by changing the sterics and/or electronic properties of the magnesium(I) complex.

Heterometallic europium disiloxanediolates: synthesis, structural diversity, and photoluminescence properties. Inorg Chem 2014; 53:11662-74. Abstract
This contribution presents a full account of a structurally diverse class of heterometallic europium disiloxanediolates. The synthetic protocol involves in situ metalation of (HO)SiPh2OSiPh2(OH) (1) with either (n)BuLi or KN(SiMe3)2 followed by treatment with EuCl3 in suitable solvents such as 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) or tetrahydrofuran (THF). Reaction of EuCl3 with 2 equiv of (LiO)SiPh2OSiPh2(OLi) in DME afforded the Eu(III) bis(disiloxanediolate) "ate" complex [{(Ph2SiO)2O}2{Li(DME)}3]EuCl2 (2), which upon attempted reduction with Zn gave the tris(disiloxanediolate) [{(Ph2SiO)2O}3{Li(DME)}3]Eu (3). Treatment of EuCl3 with (LiO)SiPh2OSiPh2(OLi) in a molar ratio of 1:2 yielded both the ate complex [{(Ph2SiO)2O}3Li{Li(THF)2}{Li(THF)}]EuCl·Li(THF)3 (4) and the LiCl-free europium(III) complex [{(Ph2SiO)2O}2{Li(THF)2}2]EuCl (5). Compound 5 was found to exhibit a brilliant red triboluminescence. When (KO)SiPh2OSiPh2(OK) was used as starting material in a 3:1 reaction with EuCl3, the Eu(III) tris(disiloxanediolate) [{(Ph2SiO)2O}3{K(DME)}3]Eu (6) was isolated. Attempted ligand transfer between 5 and (DAD(Dipp))2Ba(DME) (DAD(Dipp) = N,N'-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-1,4-diaza-1,3-butadiene) afforded the unique mixed-valent Eu(III)/Eu(II) disiloxanediolate cluster [(Ph2SiO)2O]6Eu(II)4Eu(III)2Li4O2Cl2 (7). All new complexes were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. Photoluminescence studies were carried out for complex 5 showing an excellent color quality, due to the strong (5)D0→(7)F2 transition, but a weak antenna effect.

Abstract
The first sulfite [{(((nP,Me) ArO)3 tacn)U(IV) }2 (μ-κ(1) :κ(2) -SO3 )] (tacn=triazacyclononane) and dithionite [{(((nP,Me) ArO)3 tacn)U(IV) }2 (μ-κ(2) :κ(2) -S2 O4 )] complexes of uranium from reaction with gaseous SO2 have been prepared. Additionally, the reductive activation of CO2 was investigated with respect to the rare oxalate [{(((nP,Me) ArO)3 tacn)U(IV) }2 (μ-κ(2) :κ(2) -C2 O4 )] formation. This ultimately provides the unique S2 O4 (2-) /C2 O4 (2-) and SO3 (2-) /CO3 (2-) complex pairs. All new complexes were characterized by a combination of single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, UV/Vis/NIR electronic absorption, IR vibrational, and (1) H NMR spectroscopy, as well as magnetization (VT SQUID) studies. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out to gain further insight into the reaction mechanisms. All observations, together with DFT, support the assumption that SO2 and CO2 show similar (dithionite/oxalate) to analogous (sulfite/carbonate) activation behavior with uranium complexes.

Abstract
The syntheses of four nearly isostructural uranium(IV) monoarene complexes, supported by the arene anchored tris(aryloxide) chelate, [((Ad,Me)ArO)3mes](3-), are reported. Oxidation of the uranium(III) precursor [(((Ad,Me)ArO)3mes)U], 1, in the presence of tetrahydrofuran (THF) results in THF coordination and distortion of the equatorial coordination sphere to afford the uranium(IV) η(6)-arene complexes, [(((Ad,Me)ArO)3mes)U(X)(THF)], 2-X-THF, (where X = F, Cl, Br, or I) as their THF adducts. The solvate-free trigonally ligated [(((Ad,Me)ArO)3mes)U(F)], 2-F, was prepared and isolated in the absence of coordinating solvents for comparison.

Abstract
The low-temperature (<-35 °C) reduction of the trivalent uranium monoarene complex [{((Ad,Me) ArO)3 mes}U] (1), with potassium spheres in the presence of a slight excess of 2.2.2-cryptand, affords the quantitative conversion of 1 into the uranium(II) monoarene complex [K(2.2.2-crypt)][(((Ad,Me) ArO)3 mes)U] (1-K). The molecular and electronic structure of 1-K was established experimentally by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, variable-temperature (1) H NMR and X-band EPR spectroscopy, solution-state and solid-state magnetism studies, and optical absorption spectroscopy. The electronic structure of the complex was further investigated by DFT calculations. The complete body of evidence confirms that 1-K is a uranium(II) monoarene complex with a 5f (4) electronic configuration supported by δ backbonding and that the nearly reversible, room-temperature reduction observed for 1 at -2.495 V vs. Fc/Fc(+) is principally metal-centered.
