Abstract
The chemistry of the p-block elements is a huge playground for fundamental and applied work. With their bonding from electron deficient to hypercoordinate and formally hypervalent, the p-block elements represent an area to find terra incognita. Often, the formation of cations that contain p-block elements as central ingredient is desired, for example to make a compound more Lewis acidic for an application or simply to prove an idea. This review has collected the reactive p-block cations (rPBC) with a comprehensive focus on those that have been published since the year 2000, but including the milestones and key citations of earlier work. We include an overview on the weakly coordinating anions (WCAs) used to stabilize the rPBC and give an overview to WCA selection, ionization strategies for rPBC-formation and finally list the rPBC ordered in their respective group from 13 to 18. However, typical, often more organic ion classes that constitute for example ionic liquids (imidazolium, ammonium, etc.) were omitted, as were those that do not fulfill the - naturally subjective -"reactive"-criterion of the rPBC. As a rule, we only included rPBC with crystal structure and only rarely refer to important cations published without crystal structure. This collection is intended for those who are simply interested what has been done or what is possible, as well as those who seek advice on preparative issues, up to people having a certain application in mind, where the knowledge on the existence of a rPBC that might play a role as an intermediate or active center may be useful.

Abstract
N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are widely used ligands and reagents in modern inorganic synthesis as well as in homogeneous catalysis and organocatalysis. However, NHCs are not always innocent bystanders. In the last few years, more and more examples were reported of reactions of NHCs with main-group elements which resulted in modification of the NHC. Many of these reactions lead to ring expansion and the formation of six-membered heterocyclic rings involving insertion of the heteroatom into the C-N bond and migration of hydrides, phenyl groups or boron-containing fragments. Furthermore, a few related NHC rearrangements were observed some decades ago. In this Perspective, we summarise the history of NHC ring expansion reactions from the 1960s till the present.

Abstract
An efficient method for the synthesis of the NHC-stabilised Si(i) halides Si2X2(Idipp)2 (2-X, X = Cl, Br, I) was developed, which involves the oxidation of Si2(Idipp)2 (1) with 1,2-dihaloethanes. Iodide abstraction from 2-I afforded the unprecedented silicon(i) salt [Si2(I)(Idipp)2][B(C6F5)4] (3).
An efficient method for the synthesis of the NHC-stabilised Si(i) halides Si2X2(Idipp)2 (2-X, X = Cl, Br, I; Idipp = C[N(C6H3-2,6-iPr2)CH]2) was developed, which involves the oxidation of Si2(Idipp)2 (1) with 1,2-dihaloethanes. Halogenation of 1 is a diastereoselective reaction leading exclusively to a racemic mixture of the RR and SS enantiomers of 2-X. Compounds 2-Br and 2-I were characterised by single-crystal X-ray crystallography and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, and their electronic structures were analysed by quantum chemical methods. Dynamic NMR spectroscopy unraveled a fluxional process of 2-Br and 2-I in solution, which involved a hindered rotation of the NHC groups about the Si–CNHC bonds. Iodide abstraction from 2-I by [Li(Et2O)2.5][B(C6F5)4] selectively afforded the disilicon(i) salt [Si2(I)(Idipp)2][B(C6F5)4] (3). X-ray crystallography and variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy of 3 in combination with quantum chemical calculations shed light on the ground-state geometric and electronic structure of the [Si2(I)(Idipp)2]+ ion, which features a Si

Si bond between a trigonal planar coordinated SiII atom with a Si–I bond and a two-coordinate Si0 center carrying a lone pair of electrons. The dynamics of the [Si2(I)(Idipp)2]+ ion were studied in solution by variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy and they involve a topomerisation, which proceeds according to quantum theory via a disilaiodonium intermediate (“π-bonded” isomer) and exchanges the two heterotopic Si sites.

Abstract
Nitrous oxide (N2O, ‘laughing gas’) is a very inert molecule. Still, it can be used as a reagent in synthetic organic and inorganic chemistry, serving as O-atom donor, as N-atom donor, or as a oxidant in metal-catalyzed reactions.
