Copper-Catalyzed Intermolecular Carboetherification of Unactivated Alkenes by Alkyl Nitriles and Alcohols

Bis-Cyclometalated Indazole Chiral-at-Rhodium Catalyst for Asymmetric Photoredox Cyanoalkylations

A new class of bis‐cyclometalated rhodium(III) catalysts containing two inert cyclometalated 6‐tert‐butyl‐2‐phenyl‐2H‐indazole ligands and two labile acetonitriles is introduced. Single enantiomers (>99 % ee) were obtained through a chiral‐auxiliary‐mediated approach using a monofluorinated salicyloxazoline. The new chiral‐at‐metal complex is capable of catalyzing the visible‐light‐induced enantioselective α‐cyanoalkylation of 2‐acyl imidazoles in which it serves a dual function as the chiral Lewis acid catalyst for the asymmetric radical chemistry and at the same time as the photoredox catalyst for the visible‐light‐induced redox chemistry (up to 80 % yield, 4:1 d.r., and 95 % ee, 12 examples).

Free Radical Addition of Nitrile, Ketone, and Ester to Alkyne and the Selectivity Discussion

A general and practical atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) of simple nitriles, ketones, and esters to alkynes was developed. It can allow an efficient access to a wide range of β,γ-unsaturated nitriles, ketones, and esters. The unique chemoselectivity in this system is also discussed.

Remote C(sp3 )-H Arylation and Vinylation of N-Alkoxypyridinium Salts to δ-Aryl and δ-Vinyl Alcohols

The reaction of readily available and bench-stable N-alkoxypyridinium salts with arylboronic and vinylboronic acids afforded δ-aryl and δ-vinyl alcohols, respectively, in the presence of fac-Ir(ppy)₃ and Cu(OTf)₂ dual catalysts. The reaction takes place through a domino process involving the reductive generation of alkoxyl radicals, 1,5-hydrogen atom transfer (1,5-HAT) and the copper-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of the resulting translocated carbon radicals with boronic acids. Complementary to the Minisci reaction, this method allows for the arylation of nucleophilic alkyl radicals with both electron-rich and electron-poor arenes under mild reaction conditions.

Oxazoline-/Copper-Catalyzed Alkoxyl Radical Generation: Solvent-Switched to Access 3a,3a'-Bisfuroindoline and 3-Alkoxyl Furoindoline

We report the first example of oxazoline-/copper-catalyzed alcohol oxidation to generate the alkoxyl radical under additive-free conditions. The resulting alkoxyl radical addition to alkene enables useful C-O bond-forming and selective C(sp³)-C(sp³) radical-radical dimerization/radical-trapping reactions, providing direct access to the 3a,3a'-bisfuro[2,3-b]indoline scaffold for the first time and a wide range of 3-alkoxyl furoindolines with high efficiency.

Copper-Catalyzed 1,2-Methoxy Methoxycarbonylation of Alkenes with Methyl Formate

Reported here is a copper-catalyzed 1,2-methoxy methoxycarbonylation of alkenes by an unprecedented use of methyl formate as a source of both the methoxy and the methoxycarbonyl groups. This reaction transforms styrene and its derivatives into value-added β-methoxy alkanoates and cinnamates, as well as medicinally important five-membered heterocycles, such as functionalized tetrahydrofurans, γ-lactones, and pyrrolidines. A ternary β-diketiminato-Cu^I -styrene complex, fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallographic analysis, is capable of catalyzing the same transformation. These findings suggest that pre-coordination of electron-rich alkenes to copper might play an important role in accelerating the addition of nucleophilic radicals to electron-rich alkenes, and could have general implications in the design of novel radical-based transformations.

Selective Formation of Internal Olefinic Trimer of α-Methylstyrenes with HI Gas and Ketones

Reaction of α-methylstyrene in the presence of HI gas and methyl p-tolyl ketone selectively resulted in an internal olefinic trimer. We revealed that the ketones with the stabilization of the protonated state were efficient to give the corresponding trimers, whereas the other ketones gave the usual indane compound. From the investigation for the mechanistic path, we found that the trimer is a kinetic product and that indane is a thermodynamic product.

One-step construction of molecular complexity by tert-butyl nitrite (TBN)-initiated cascade α,β-sp3 C-H bond difunctionalization and C-N bond cleavage

TBN-initiated cascade multifunctionalization of inert C-H and C-N bonds in N-arylazacycles has been realized under transition-metal free conditions, in which the synthetically useful oxime, N-NO and aldehyde functional groups were constructed in only one synthetic step.

Facile Electrochemical Intramolecular Amination of Urea-Tethered Terminal Alkenes for the Synthesis of Cyclic Ureas

Facile intramolecular amination of unactivated alkenes has been achieved by using electricity as a catalyst that helps to generate an intermediate and accelerates formation of cyclic ureas in high yields. Using this method, no metal catalysts were used. During electrolysis, a nitrogen radical was formed at the urea substrate that cyclised with the alkene and generated a terminal carbon radical which further formed a bond with the 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl radical (TEMPO). This method of electrolysis not only gives cyclic ureas but also functionalises terminal unactivated alkenes. This method can be considered to be environmentally friendly given that it avoids the issues of toxicity or complicated metal ligands and could therefore be potentially employed in green chemistry.

Regioselective Copper-Catalyzed Oxidative Coupling of α-Alkylated Styrenes with Tertiary Alkyl Radicals

A radical-mediated oxidative cross-coupling of readily accessible α-alkylated styrenes with 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds utilizing a combination of Cu(OAc)₂ and air as a catalytic system is described. Rather than requiring α-halocarbonyl compounds, this efficient approach enables direct installation of tertiary functionalized alkyl motifs to olefins with simple carbonyl derivatives. The novel protocol is characterized with high allylic selectivities via a competing β-H elimination. Both radical-clock and -trapping experiments provided clear-cut evidence for the intermediacy of an α-keto carbon-centered radical.

Facile Synthesis of Single α-tert-Alkylated Acetaldehydes by Hydroxyalkylation of Enamides in Aqueous Solution

In this work, we established a general protocol to synthesize single α-tert-alkylated acetaldehydes via Cu-catalyzed hydroxyalkylation of enamides in aqueous solutions. The yields of the products were very high and there was excellent functional group compatibility. Our reaction allows easy access to highly functionalized acetaldehydes that can be used to synthesize further useful compounds including spirocycles. The control experiments revealed that this reaction includes hydroxyalkylation processes via radical reactions.

Transforming Olefins into γ,δ-Unsaturated Nitriles through Copper Catalysis

We have developed a strategy to transform olefins into homoallylic nitriles through a mechanism that combines copper catalysis with alkyl nitrile radicals. The radicals are easily generated from alkyl nitriles in the presence of the mild oxidant di-tert-butyl peroxide. This cross-dehydrogenative coupling between simple olefins and alkylnitriles bears advantages over the conventional use of halides and toxic cyanide reagents. With this method, we showcase the facile synthesis of a flavoring agent, a natural product, and a polymer precursor from simple olefins.
