Integration of Lanthanide–Transition‐Metal Clusters onto CdS Surfaces for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

New Versatile Synthetic Route for the Preparation of Metal Phosphate Decorated Hydrogen Evolution Photocatalysts

Photocatalytic hydrogen generation will benefit from the realization of more active but less expensive cocatalysts compared with noble metal counterparts. Herein we developed a universal vapor deposition method that selectively uses the thermal decomposition products of sodium hypophosphite as a phosphorus source for the fabrication of inexpensive and highly efficient metal phosphate (MPi) modified CdS nanorods. We find that the modification with a bimetal phosphate (i.e., 5 wt % NiCoPi) leads to an activity enhancement by a factor of approximately 52 in boosting visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution relative to the pristine CdS nanorods. The photocatalyst exhibits a high hydrogen generation rate of 13.44 mmol·g^-1·h^-1, which is much higher than that of its single metal counterparts (NiPi, 8.70 mmol·g^-1·h^-1; CoPi, 5.79 mmol·g^-1·h^-1) and 1 wt % Pt modified CdS (1.33 mmol·g^-1·h^-1). Its apparent quantum efficiency reaches 23.5% at 420 nm. Furthermore, it also shows remarkable photostability for eight consecutive cycles of photocatalytic activity tests with total reaction time of 24 h. The excellent photocatalytic performance of the photocatalyst is believed to be associated with the in situ formed Ni^ICoP and NiCo^IIIPi cocatalysts, which not only play an important role in photogenerated charge separation but also provide highly active catalytic reaction sites for the corresponding hydrogen evolution reaction and the sacrificial agent oxidation reaction.

A single-ligand-protected Eu60−nGd(Tb)n cluster: a reasonable new approach to expand lanthanide aggregations

Substituents lead to differences in the formation of two different butterfly-shaped NiDy clusters: structures and multistep assembly mechanisms

The most effective way to understand reaction mechanisms and kinetics is to identify the reaction intermediates and determine the possible reaction patterns. The influencing factors that must be considered in the self-assembly of clusters are the type of ligand, metal ion, coordination anion and the pH of the solution. However, changes in ligand substituents resulting in different self-assembly processes to obtain different types of structures are still very rare, especially with -H and -CH₃ substituents, which do not exert significant steric hindrance effects. In this study, planar mononuclear Ni(L¹)₂ (L¹ = 2-ethoxy-6-(iminomethyl)phenol) was dissolved in methanol and combined with Dy(NO₃)₃·6H₂O for 48 h at room temperature to obtain a butterfly-like Ni₂Dy₂ cluster ([Dy₂Ni₂(L¹)₄(CH₃O)₂(NO₃)₄], 1). The Dy(iii) ions in cluster 1 are in an O₈N coordination environment, and the Ni(ii) ions are in an O₅N coordination environment. High-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HRESI-MS) was used to track species changes during the formation of cluster 1. Six key intermediate fragments were screened, and the self-assembly mechanism was proposed as Ni(L¹)₂→ HL¹ + NiL¹→ DyL¹/Ni(L¹)₂'→ DyNi(L¹)₂→ Dy₂Ni₂(L¹)₄. Through this assembly mechanism, we found that Ni(L¹)₂ was first cleaved into HL¹ + NiL¹ and then further assembled to obtain 1. Another butterfly-like tetranuclear heterometallic cluster ([Dy₂Ni₂(L²)₄(CH₃O)₂(NO₃)₄], 2) was obtained using planar mononuclear Ni(L²)₂ (L² = (E)-2-ethoxy-6-((methylimino)methyl)phenol) with -CH₃ substitution on the nitrogen atom under the same reaction conditions. The structural analysis of cluster 2 showed that the Dy(iii) ions are in an O₉ coordination environment, and the Ni(ii) ions are in an O₄N₂ coordination environment. HRESI-MS was used to trace species changes during the formation of 2, and the assembly mechanism was proposed as Ni(L²)₂→ DyNi(L²)₂→ Dy₂Ni(L²)₂→ Dy₂Ni₂(L²)₄. Analysis of the assembly mechanism of 2 showed that Ni(L²)₂ was twisted during the reaction, and its coordination point was exposed to capture the Dy(iii) ions. Finally, Dy(NO₃)₃·6H₂O was replaced with NaN₃ to obtain a [Ni₂Na₂(L²)₄(N₃)₄] cluster (3) under the same reaction conditions and verify the above-mentioned torsion step. HRESI-MS was also used to trace the assembly process, and the assembly mechanism was proposed as Ni(L²)₂→ NiNa(L²)₂→ NiNa₂(L²)₂→ Ni₂Na₂(L²)₄. Herein, the effect of interference from substitution and the regulation self-assembly process were discovered in the formation of 3d-4f heterometallic clusters, and different types of coordination clusters were obtained.

Supporting Ultrathin ZnIn2 S4 Nanosheets on Co/N-Doped Graphitic Carbon Nanocages for Efficient Photocatalytic H2 Generation

Ultrathin ZnIn₂ S₄ nanosheets (NSs) are grown on Co/N-doped graphitic carbon (NGC) nanocages, composed of Co nanoparticles surrounded by few-layered NGC, to obtain hierarchical Co/NGC@ZnIn₂ S₄ hollow heterostructures for photocatalytic H₂ generation with visible light. The photoredox functions of discrete Co, conductive NGC, and ZnIn₂ S₄ NSs are precisely combined into hierarchical composite cages possessing strongly hybridized shell and ultrathin layered substructures. Such structural and compositional virtues can expedite charge separation and mobility, offer large surface area and abundant reactive sites for water photosplitting. The Co/NGC@ZnIn₂ S₄ photocatalyst exhibits outstanding H₂ evolution activity (e.g., 11270 µmol h^-1 g^-1 ) and high stability without engaging any cocatalyst.

One-Pot and Postsynthetic Phenol-Thermal Synthesis toward Highly Stable Titanium-Oxo Clusters

The synthetic approach plays a crucial role for the exploration and optimization of functional materials. As the molecular models of titanium dioxide, polyoxo-titanium clusters have undergone rapid development over past decade. Unfortunately, many of them are unstable, especially in aqueous environments, greatly limiting their applications in catalysis and environmental fields. In this work, we report a novel phenol-thermal approach toward the construction of highly stable polyoxo-titanium clusters. In addition to the traditional one-pot procedure, the phenol-thermal synthesis can also be used as a postsynthetic pathway to modify the alcohol terminated titanium-oxo clusters. During the modification in phenol, Ti-O core structures consisting entirely of 6-coordinated Ti^IV centers can be retained. Nevertheless, isopropanol terminated 5-coordinated Ti^IV centers are not stable and reconstructed to 6-coordinated Ti^IV centers during the phenol-thermal modification to form new Ti-O clusters. Physical attribute studies confirm that the obtained phenolic clusters generally display much better stability and stronger visible light absorption than isopropanol stabilized clusters with identical or similar cores. Therefore, phenol can not only offer a suitable solution environment for the construction of new cluster structures but also provide robust protection for the cluster cores and also an efficient method to enhance their visible light responses.

Tailored Synthesis of an Unprecedented Pb-Mn Heterometallic Halide Hybrid with Enhanced Emission

Organic-inorganic lead halide hybrids have attracted extensive interest in solid-state lighting, due to their superior color tunability and low-cost solution processing. However, the relatively low photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PLQE) is a common issue for most bulk lead halide hybrids. Inspired by the intriguing luminescence properties of heterometallic complexes, we rationally developed an unprecedented two-dimensional (2D) Pb-Mn heterometallic halide hybrid, (C₅H₁₄N₂)₂Pb₄MnCl₁₄ (2), through a precisely tailored synthetic approach based on (C₅H₁₄N₂)₂Pb₅Cl₁₄ (1). Intriguingly, 2 features a unique 2D heterometallic halide layer configuration, in which the strong quantum confinement facilitates efficient energy transfer from bound excitons to d-states of Mn²⁺, resulting in highly sensitized Mn²⁺emission. The PLQE of 2 is up to 32%, considerably higher than that of pristine 1 (less than 1%). Moreover, 2 presents significant environmental and thermal stability, benefiting from its cluster feature. To our best knowledge, this is the first example of construction of a Pb-Mn heterometallic halide hybrid with bulk highly efficient red emission. This work provides a way to enhance the PLQE of lead halide hybrids via sensitization in rationally designed heterometallic halide hybrids.
