Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using water extract of Salvia leriifolia : Antibacterial studies and applications as catalysts in the electrochemical detection of nitrite

Tragacanth-mediate synthesis of NiO nanosheets for cytotoxicity and photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes

In this study, NiO nanosheets have been manufactured using a co-precipitation approach that involved the usage of nickel nitrate (Ni (NO₃)₂.6H₂O) as the raw material and tragacanth in the role of a stabilizing agent. NiO nanosheets have been fabricated through the reduction of nickel nitrate solution that had been obtained by the application of aqueous extract of tragacanth, which is capable of functioning as a reducing and stabilizing agent. In the following, the physical and chemical properties of tragacanth-stabilized NiO nanosheets have been identified via FESEM, EDS, XRD, UV-Vis, and FT-IR techniques. According to the XRD pattern, these particular nanosheets have contained a cubic structure and group space Fm3m, along with the average size of about 18 to 43 nm that had been in agreement with the FESEM measurements. In addition, we have evaluated the photocatalytic activity of tragacanth-stabilized NiO nanosheets on the degradations of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) dyes. The performed photocatalytic assessment has displayed that the nanosheets can degrade 82% of MO within 210 min and 60% of MB in 300 min. The cytotoxicity of tragacanth-stabilized NiO nanosheets on human Glioblastoma cancer (U87MG) cell lines has been investigated via the MTT assay, while it has been detected in the obtained results that the inhibitory concentration (IC₅₀) had been 125 µg/mL.

Facile green synthesis and applications of silver nanoparticles: a state-of-the-art review

In the field of nanotechnology, the development of reliable and eco-friendly methods for the synthesis of NPs is crucial. The conventional methods for the synthesis of NPs are costly, toxic, and not ecofriendly. To overcome these issues, natural sources such as plant, bacteria, fungi, and biopolymers have been used to synthesize AgNPs. These natural sources act as reducing and capping agents. The shape, size, and applications of AgNPs are prominently affected by the reaction parameters under which they are synthesized. Accessible distributed data on the synthesis of AgNPs include the impact of different parameters (temperature and pH), characterization techniques (DLS, UV-vis, FTIR, XRD, SEM, TEM and EDX), properties and their applications. This review paper discusses all the natural sources such as plants, bacteria, fungi, and biopolymers that have been used for the synthesis of AgNPs in the last ten years. AgNPs synthesized by green methods have found potential applications in a wide spectrum of areas including drug delivery, DNA analysis and gene therapy, cancer treatment, antimicrobial agents, biosensors, catalysis, SERS and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The current limitations and future prospects for the synthesis of inorganic nanoparticles by green methods are also discussed herein.

Nanobiohybrids: a new concept for metal nanoparticles synthesis

In recent years, nanoscience and nanotechnology have brought a great revolution in different areas. In particular, the synthesis of transition metal nanoparticles has been of great relevance for their use in areas such as biomedicine, antimicrobial properties or catalytic applications for chemical synthesis. Recently, an innovative straightforward and very efficient synthesis of these nanoparticles by simply using enzymes as inductors in aqueous media has been described. This represents a very green alternative to the different methodologies described in the literature for metal nanoparticles preparation where harsh conditions are necessary. In this review the most recent advances in the synthesis of metal nanoparticles by this green technology, explaining the synthetic mechanism, the role of the enzyme in the formation of the nanoparticles and the effect on the final properties of these nanoparticles, are summarised. The application of these novel metal nanoparticles-enzyme hybrids in synthetic chemistry as heterogeneous catalysts with metal or dual (enzymatic and metallic) activity and their capacity as environmental and antimicrobial agents have also been discussed.

Coating of Polyetheretherketone Films with Silver Nanoparticles by a Simple Chemical Reduction Method and Their Antibacterial Activity

The coating of polymeric substrate polyetheretherketone (PEEK) with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was carried out by a wet chemical route at room temperature. The coating process was developed from the Tollens reagent and D-glucose as reducing agent. The resulting composite exhibited antimicrobial activity. The PEEK films were coated with a single layer and two layers of silver nanoparticles in various concentrations. The crystallographic properties of the polymer and the silver nanoparticles were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) show the interaction between the silver nanoparticles with the polymeric substrate. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) images confirmed the obtaining of metallic nanoparticles with average sizes of 25 nm. It was possible to estimate the amount of silver deposited on PEEK with the help of thermogravimetric analysis. The morphology and shape of the AgNPs uniformly deposited on the PEEK films was ascertained by the techniques of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), evidencing the increase in the amount of silver by increasing the concentration of the metal precursor. Finally, the antibacterial activity of the films coated with Ag in Escherichia coli, Serratia marcescens and Bacillus licheniformis was evaluated, evidencing that the concentration of silver is crucial in the cellular replication of the bacteria.

Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles: biomolecule-nanoparticle organizations targeting antimicrobial activity

Since discovery of the first antibiotic drug, penicillin, in 1928, a variety of antibiotic and antimicrobial agents have been developed and used for both human therapy and industrial applications. However, excess and uncontrolled use of antibiotic agents has caused a significant growth in the number of drug resistant pathogens. Novel therapeutic approaches replacing the inefficient antibiotics are in high demand to overcome increasing microbial multidrug resistance. In the recent years, ongoing research has focused on development of nano-scale objects as efficient antimicrobial therapies. Among the various nanoparticles, silver nanoparticles have gained much attention due to their unique antimicrobial properties. However, concerns about the synthesis of these materials such as use of precursor chemicals and toxic solvents, and generation of toxic byproducts have led to a new alternative approach, green synthesis. This eco-friendly technique incorporates use of biological agents, plants or microbial agents as reducing and capping agents. Silver nanoparticles synthesized by green chemistry offer a novel and potential alternative to chemically synthesized nanoparticles. In this review, we discuss the recent advances in green synthesis of silver nanoparticles, their application as antimicrobial agents and mechanism of antimicrobial mode of action.

In Situ Metalorganic Deposition of Silver Nanoparticles on Gold Substrate and Square Wave Voltammetry: A Highly Efficient Combination for Nanomolar Detection of Nitrate Ions in Sea Water

The electro-reduction of nitrate ions in artificial sea water was investigated at a gold substrate (EAu) functionalized by silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). These AgNPs were generated in situ on the gold substrate by the direct decomposition of the metalorganic N,N′-diisopropylacetamidinate silver precursor [Ag(Amd)] in the liquid phase. Very small and well dispersed AgNPs were deposited on the gold electrode and then used as working electrode (EAu/AgNPs). Square wave voltammetry (SWV) was successfully employed to detect nitrate ions (NO3−) with a detection limit (LOD) of 0.9 nmol∙L−1 in artificial sea water (pH = 6.0) without pre-concentration or pH adjustment.

Retracted Article: Organometallic Ag nanostructures prepared using Hypericum perforatum extract are highly effective against multidrug-resistant bacteria

The tuning of bulk Ag⁺ ions into organometallic Ag nanostructures using Hypericum perforatum extract is reported for the first time. The green-synthesised nanostructures showed an auspicious antibacterial performance against highly virulent multidrug resistant bacteria.
