Abstract
The synthesis, characterization and ion binding properties of a new ditopic ratiometric receptor (1), based on 2-(4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-2-yl)phenol and crown ether moieties, have been described. The ditopic ratiometric receptor has been studied in sensing both F(-) and Zn(2+) ions, exhibiting different fluorescent colour changes from cyan green to blue/black observable by the naked eye under UV-light. The addition of Zn(2+) to the solution of 1 induced the formation of a 2 : 2 ligand-metal complex 1-Zn(2+), which displays a remarkable blue shift of the emission maxima of 1 from 455 nm to 400 nm due to the inhibition of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanism. The sensing processes were monitored by fluorescence/absorption titrations, and further confirmed by Job's plot and (1)H NMR titrations. The crystal structure of 1-Zn(2+) reveals that 1 binds Zn(2+) in four-coordinated modes. Furthermore, 1 is cell permeable and may be applied to detect trace Zn(2+) and F(-) during the development of a living organism.

Abstract
Two pyrene dimers containing an -O-Si-Si-O- or -O-Si-O- linkage have been designed which exhibit ratiometric excimer/monomer emission upon fluoride anion induced Si-O bond cleavage. Abstract
We have synthesized a new indole functionalized rhodamine derivative L(1) which specifically binds to Cu(2+) in the presence of large excess of other competing ions with visually observable changes in their electronic and fluorescence spectral behavior. These spectral changes are significant enough in the NIR and visible region of the spectrum and thus enable naked eye detection. The receptor, L(1), could be employed as a resonance energy transfer (RET) based sensor for detection of Cu(2+) based on the process involving the donor indole and the acceptor Cu(2+) bound xanthene fragment. Studies reveal that L(1)-Cu complex is selectively and fully reversible in presence of sulfide anions. Further, fluorescence microscopic studies confirmed that the reagent L(1) could also be used as an imaging probe for detection of uptake of these ions in HeLa cells.

Abstract
A series of neutral C(3)-symmetric acyclic artificial receptors incorporating amide functionality has been designed, synthesized, and fully characterized. Upon protonation, these conformationally flexible N-bridged tripodal podands 1-5 form in situ cone shape conformation through hydrogen bonding and C-H···π interactions. The protonation-induced interior preorganized cavity is capable of entrapping nitrate anions through the amide N-H bonds to form discrete nitrate complexes (1a-5a), which were fully characterized by NMR, HRESI mass spectra, and single crystal structures. By incorporating suitable fluorophores at each branch of the tripod receptor, the resulting fluorescent receptor 5 selectively recognized nitrate anions by fluorescent quenching in a DMSO solution and displayed one of the highest binding affinities for nitrate anions reported so far in polar media. Receptor 5 represents a unique example of a neutral receptor for the recognition of nitrate anions in polar solvent media by its zwitterionic form. The possible mechanism of proton-induced preorganization of these flexible, acyclic receptors in a convergent cone conformation followed by nitrate complexation has been proposed to rationalize the effective nitrate recognition.

Abstract
A novel acetate selective anion sensor 3 based on azophenol and mercapto thiadiazole had been designed and synthesized. Sensor 3 behaves a single selectivity and sensitivity in the recognition for AcO(-) anion over other anions such as F(-), Cl(-), Br(-), I(-), H(2)PO(4)(-), HSO(4)(-) and ClO(4)(-) by naked-eyes and UV-vis spectra changes in aqueous solution (H(2)O/DMSO, 5:5, v/v). The color of the solution containing sensor 3 had an obvious change from colorless to orange only after the addition of AcO(-) in aqueous solution while other anions did not cause obvious color change. (1)H NMR titration results revealed that the binding process includes two steps: (i) hydrogen bonding interactions (for small quantities of acetate) and (ii) proton transfer between the sensor 3 and the coordinated anion (for high quantities of acetate). The association constant K(a) was 7.35×10(3) M(-1). The detection limitation of AcO(-) with the sensor 3 was 1.0×10(-6) mol L(-1).

Abstract
A simple efficient method for the synthesis of new ferrocene bis thiocarbazones via microwave irradiation under solvent-free conditions has been developed. Compared to the conventional method, its major advantages are short reaction times, good conversions and actually accorded the green synthesis technology. The structures of target compounds were confirmed by 1H NMR, IR, ESI-MS spectra data and elemental analysis. Preliminary bioassay results showed that some of these compounds possess inhibitory effects against S. aureus, S. pyogenes and E. coli bacteria.

Abstract
A simple method for the synthesis of new deoxycholic acid bis thiocarbazones under solvent-free conditions using microwave irradiation has been developed. Its main advantages are short reaction times, good conversions and the environmentally friendly nature of the process. Their structures were characterised by 1H NMR, IR, ESI-MS spectra and elemental analysis. The preliminary results indicate that some of these compounds possess inhibitory effects against Escherichia coli.

Abstract
To explore the anion-recognition ability of the phenolic hydroxyl group and the amino hydrogen, we synthesized three different acridinedione (ADD) based anion receptors, 1, 2 and 3, having OH, NH, and combination of OH and NH groups, respectively. Absorption, emission and (1)H NMR spectral studies revealed that receptor 1, having only a phenolic OH group, shows selective deprotonation of the hydroxyl proton towards F(-), which results in an "ON-OFF"-type signal in the fluorescence spectral studies. Receptor 2, which only has an amino hydrogen, also shows deprotonation of the amino hydrogen with F(-), whereas receptor 3 (having both OH and NH groups) shows head-to-tail intermolecular hydrogen bonding of OH and NH groups with F(-) prior to deprotonation. The observation of hydrogen bonding of the OH and NH groups in a combined solution of 1 and 2 with F(-) in a head-to-tail hetero-intermolecular fashion, and the absence of head-to-head and tail-to-tail intermolecular hydrogen bonding in 1 and 2 with F(-), prove that the difference in the acidity of the OH and NH protons leads to the formation of an intermolecular hydrogen-bonding complex with F(-) prior to deprotonation. The presence of this hydrogen-bonding complex was confirmed by absorption spectroscopy, 3D emission contour studies, and (1)H NMR titration.
