Abstract
The study of mononuclear lanthanide-based systems, where the observed Single Molecule Magnets (SMMs) properties originate from the local magnetic anisotropy of the single lanthanide ion, has been extensively investigated in the literature. The case for polynuclear lanthanide SMMs becomes more challenging both experimentally and theoretically due to the complexity of such architectures involving interactions between the magnetic centers. Much interest was devoted to the study of the structural effect on the magnetic interactions and relaxation dynamics. However, the understanding of the structural influence on those two factors remains a difficult task. To address this issue, a system containing two structurally related tetranuclear Dy(iii) SMMs, namely [Dy4(L)4(OH)2(DMF)4(NO3)2]·2(DMF)·(H2O) (1) and [Dy4(L)4(OH)2(DMF)2(NO3)2] (2) (H2L = 2-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylideneamino)phenol), is introduced and investigated. Through modifying the ligands on the changeable coordination sites, the intramolecular magnetic interactions and relaxation dynamics in these two Dy(iii)4 SMMs can be tuned. Both complexes exhibit slow relaxation of their magnetization with a relaxation barrier of 114 K for complex 2 while a blocking temperature below 2 K is observed for complex 1. Ab initio calculations reveal that changes in coordination numbers and geometries on the Dy(iii) sites can significantly affect the magnetic interactions as well as single-ion anisotropy. The combination of experimental work and ab initio calculations offers insight into the relationship between structures and magnetic properties and sheds light on the rational design of future polynuclear lanthanide SMMs with enhanced magnetic properties.

Abstract
To develop new lanthanide single-molecule magnets (SMMs), two new complexes of [Dy2(MeOH)2(HL1)2(NO3)2]·2MeOH (1) and [Dy6(μ3-OH)2(L2)2(HL2)2(H2L2)2Cl2(EtOH)2]Cl2·3EtOH·CH3CN (2) were obtained by reacting Dy(NO)3·6H2O with 3-amino-1,2-propanediol in the presence of 2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde for 1 and by reacting DyCl3·6H2O with 1,1-di(hydroxymethyl)ethylamine in the presence of 2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde for 2, respectively, in which the Schiff base ligands of 3-(((2-hydroxynaphthaen-1-yl)methylene)amino)-propane-1,2-diol (H3L1) and 2-(β-naphthalideneamino)-2-(hydroxylmethyl)-1-propanol (H3L2) were in situ formed. The two Dy(III) ions in 1 are linked by two Oalkoxy atoms of two (HL1)2- ligands to build a dinuclear skeleton. Complex 2 presents a nearly planar hexanuclear skeleton constructed from four edge-shared triangular Dy3 units with the two peripheral Dy3 units consolidated by two μ3-O bridges and the two central Dy3 units consolidated by one μ3-O bridge. Obviously, they exhibit a different topological arrangement resulting from the linkage of the Schiff base ligands. Both of them are typical SMMs under zero dc fields, with a Ueff/ kB value of 34 K for 1 and 40 K for 2, respectively. Multiple processes are involved in the relaxation processes of 1 and 2. The different SMM performances of the two titled complexes reveal a tuning effect of Schiff base ligands through tuning the coordination environments and topological arrangements of dysprosium(III) ions, which is supported by the theoretical calculations.

Abstract
A series of binuclear dysprosium compounds, namely, [Dy(api)]2 (1), [Dy(api)]2·2CH2Cl2 (2), [Dy(Clapi)]2·2C4H8O (3), and [Dy(Clapi)]2·2C3H6O (4) (H3api = 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-1,3-bis[4-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-3-azabut-3-enyl]-1,3-imidazoline; H3Clapi = 2-(2′-hydroxy-5′-chlorophenyl)-1,3-bis[3′-aza-4′-(2′′-hydroxy-5′′-chlorophenyl)prop-4′-en-1′-yl]-1,3-imidazolidine), have been isolated by the reactions of salen-type ligands H3api/H3Clapi with DyCl3·6H2O in different solvent systems. Structural analysis reveals that each salen-type ligand provides a heptadentate coordination pocket (N4O3) to encapsulate a DyIII ion and all of the DyIII centers in 1–4 adopt a distorted square antiprism geometry with D4d symmetry. Magnetic studies showed that compound 1 did not exhibit single-molecule magnetic (SMMs) behavior. With the introduction of different lattice solvents, compounds 2–4 showed filed-induced slow magnetic relaxation with barriers Ueff of 18.2 K (2), 28.0 K (3) and 16.4 K (4), respectively. Ab initio calculations were employed to interpret the magnetization behavior of 1–4. The combination of experimental and theoretical data reveal the importance of the weak exchange interaction between the DyIII ions in the observation of slow magnetic relaxation, and a relaxation mechanism has been developed to rationalize the observed difference in the Ueff values. The different lattice solvents influence Dy–O–Dy bond angles and thus alter the torsion of the square antiprism geometry, consequently resulting in distinct magnetic interactions and the magnetic behavior. Solvent-tuning changes the magnetic exchange interaction and results in different magnetic relaxation dynamics in Dy2 systems ligated by a μ-phenolato heptadentate Schiff base.![]()

Abstract
Chiral bipyrimidine-bridged dinuclear LnIII complexes of general formula [(μ-bipym){((+)-tfacam)3Ln}2] and [(μ-bipym){((-)-tfacam)3Ln}2], have been prepared from the assembly of Ln(AcO)3·nH2O (LnIII = Dy, Gd), (+)/(−)-3-(trifluoroacetyl)camphor enantiopure ligands ((+)/(-)-Htfacam) and bipyrimidine (bipym). The structure and chirality of these complexes have been supported by single-crystal X-Ray diffraction and circular dichroism. The study of the magnetic properties of the GdIII complexes revealed a very weak antiferromagnetic interaction between the GdIII ions through the bipyrimidine bridging ligand. Ab initio CASSCF calculations indicated that the ground Kramers doublet (KD) of both DyIII centers is almost purely axial with the anisotropy axis located close to the two tfacam−ligands at opposite sides of each DyIIIatom, which create an axial crystal field. In keeping with this, ac dynamic measurements indicated slow relaxation of the magnetization at zero field with Ueff = 55.1 K, a pre-exponential factor of τo = 2.17·10−6 s and τQTM = 8 μs. When an optimal dc field of 0.1 T is applied, QTM is quenched and Ueff increases to 75.9 K with τo = 6.16 × 10−7 s. The DyN2O8 coordination spheres and SMM properties of [(μ-bipym){((+)-tfacam)3Ln}2] and their achiral [(Dy(β-diketonate)3)2(μ-bpym)]analogous have been compared and a magneto-structural correlation has been established, which has been supported by theoretical calculations. In contrast to the GdIII compounds, the magnetic exchange interaction between the DyIII ions has been calculated to be very weak and, generally, ferromagnetic in nature. Relaxation mechanisms for [(μ-bipym){((+)-tfacam)3Ln}2] and previously reported analogous have been proposed from ab initio calculations. As the magnetic exchange interaction found to be very weak, the observed magnetization blockade in these systems are primarily dictated by the single ion anisotropy of DyIII ions.

Abstract
Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are promising candidates for molecule-based quantum information devices. Their main limitation is their cryogenic operative temperature. To achieve devices performing at higher temperatures, demagnetization mechanisms must be suppressed by chemical tuning. Electronic structure calculations can provide useful information to rationalize SMM behavior, but they do not provide a direct prediction for the key experimental parameters describing magnetic relaxation (i.e., tunneling relaxation time (τQT) and effective demagnetization barrier ( Ueff)). In this Letter, a first-principles model is proposed to predict τQT and Ueff for mononuclear, half-integer spin SMMs, allowing direct comparison with experiment. Model accuracy was assessed against experimental data for 18 mononuclear LnIII complexes (15 DyIII and 3 ErIII) and applied to 3 of the current best-performing SMMs, correctly predicting nontrivial relaxation pathways. The model shows that the combination of single-ion anisotropy and spin-spin dipolar coupling can account for the major part of tunneling demagnetization for the studied systems.

Abstract
Mononuclear lanthanide-based single-ion magnets (SIMs) are known since 2003 with the discovery of SIM properties in a bis-(phthalocyaninato)lanthanide complex. A recent report on [Dy(Cpttt)2][BC6F5] indicating that it exhibits the highest known blocking temperature (60 K) has spurred fresh interest in this area. In this article, we discuss about the various requirements of lanthanide-based SIMs along with representative examples. Specifically, we describe the complexes whose coordination numbers vary from 2 to 8. We also discuss the representative examples of organometallic lanthanide complexes that can function as molecular magnets.

Abstract
The reaction of lanthanide(III) nitrates with 4-(pyridin-2-yl)methyleneamino-1,2,4-triazole (L) was studied. The compounds [Ln(NO3 )3 (H2 O)3 ]⋅2 L, in which Ln=Eu (1), Gd (2), Tb (3), or Dy (4), obtained in a mixture of MeCN/EtOH have the same structure, as shown by XRD. In the crystals of these compounds, the mononuclear complex units [Ln(NO3 )3 (H2 O)3 ] are linked to L molecules through intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions to form a 2D polymeric supramolecular architecture. An investigation into the optical characteristics of the Eu3+ -, Tb3+ -, and Dy3+ -containing compounds (1, 3, and 4) showed that these complexes displayed metal-centered luminescence. According to magnetic measurements, compound 4 exhibits single-ion magnet behavior, with ΔEeff /kB =86 K in a field of 1500 Oe.

Abstract
Three mononuclear DyIII complexes with the same auxiliary ligand Lz (2,4-diamino-6-pyridyl-1,3,5-triazine), [Dy(TTA)3Lz] (1Dy) (TTA = 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(2-thienyl)-1,3-butanedionate), [Dy(acac)3Lz]·CH3OH·0.5H2O (2Dy) (acac = acetylacetonate), and [Dy(MQ)2Lz2]Br·CH3OH (3Dy) (HMQ = 2-methyl-8-quinolinol), have been synthesized through alteration of the ligands containing O donors. In all three complexes, the DyIII ions are eight-coordinate and submitted to pseudo- D4 d symmetry in the first coordination sphere. It is noteworthy that the TTA ligands in 1Dy are easily substituted by other bidentate capping ligands with O donors, leading to distinct magnetic properties, which were studied experimentally and via ab initio calculations. All three complexes were found to exhibit single-molecule magnet behavior with Ueff of 22 cm-1 (1Dy), 112 cm-1 (2Dy), and 56 cm-1 (3Dy) under zero applied dc field. Complex 1Dy demonstrates inferior SIM properties compared with 2Dy and 3Dy, which can be attributed to the strong electron-withdrawing effects of TTA ligands, as confirmed by theoretical calculations. However, butterfly-shaped magnetic hysteresis in 1Dy and 3Dy was observed at 1.9 K, while not in 2Dy.

Abstract
Single-ion magnets (SIMs), exhibiting slow magnetization relaxation in the absence of the magnetic field, originate from their single spin-carrier centre. In pursuit of high-performance magnetic properties, such as high spin-reversal barrier and high blocking temperature, various metal centres were investigated to establish SIMs, including 3d and 5d transition metal ions, 4f lanthanide ions, and 5f actinide ions, which possess unique zero-field splitting and magnetic properties. Therefore, proper ligand field is of great importance to different types of metals. In the given great breakthroughs since the first SIM, [Pc2 Tb]- (Pc=dianion of phthalocyanine), was reported, strategies of ligand field design have emerged. In this review, the developments of SIMs with different metal centres are summarized, as well as the possible strategies.

Experimental and theoretical interpretation of the magnetic behavior of two Dy(iii) single-ion magnets constructed through β-diketonate ligands with different substituent groups (–Cl/–OCH3). RSC Adv 2018; 8:29513-29525. Abstract
Two Dy(iii) single-ion magnets, formulated as [Dy(Phen)(Cl-tcpb)3] (Cl-1) and [Dy(Phen)(CH3O-tmpd)3] (CH3O-2) were obtained through β-diketonate ligands (Cl-tcpb = 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-4,4,4-trifluoro-1,3-butanedione and CH3O-tmpd = 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,3-butanedione) with different substituent groups (–Cl/–OCH3) and auxiliary ligand, 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen). The Dy(iii) ions in Cl-1 and CH3O-2 are eight-coordinate, with an approximately square antiprismatic (SAP, D4d) and trigonal dodecahedron (D2d) N2O6 coordination environment, respectively, in the first coordination sphere. Under zero direct-current (dc) field, magnetic investigations demonstrate that both Cl-1 and CH3O-2 display dynamic magnetic relaxation of single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior with different effective barriers (Ueff) of 105.4 cm−1 (151.1 K) for Cl-1 and 132.5 cm−1 (190.7 K) for CH3O-2, respectively. As noted, compound CH3O-2 possesses a higher effective barrier than Cl-1. From ab initio calculations, the energies of the first excited state (KD1) are indeed close to the experimental Ueff as 126.7 cm−1vs. 105.4 cm−1 for Cl-1 and 152.8 cm−1vs. 132.5 cm−1 for CH3O-2. The order of the calculated energies of KD1 is same as that of the experimental Ueff. The superior SIM properties of CH3O-2 could have originated from the larger axial electrostatic potential (ESP(ax)) felt by the central Dy(iii) ion when compared with Cl-1. The larger ESP(ax) of CH3O-2 arises from synergic effects of the more negative charge and shorter Dy–O distances of the axial O atoms of the first sphere. These charges and distances could be influenced by functional groups outside the first sphere, e.g., –Cl and –OCH3. Further studies from the viewpoint of electrostatic potential demonstrate that the larger axial electrostatic potential (ESP) felt by the central Dy (iii) ion of CH3O-2 is responsible for its better SIM property when compared with Cl-1.![]()

Abstract
We have developed and implemented a new ab initio code, Ceres (Computational Emulator of Rare Earth Systems), completely written in C++11, which is dedicated to the efficient calculation of the electronic structure and magnetic properties of the crystal field states arising from the splitting of the ground state spin-orbit multiplet in lanthanide complexes. The new code gains efficiency via an optimized implementation of a direct configurational averaged Hartree-Fock (CAHF) algorithm for the determination of 4f quasi-atomic active orbitals common to all multi-electron spin manifolds contributing to the ground spin-orbit multiplet of the lanthanide ion. The new CAHF implementation is based on quasi-Newton convergence acceleration techniques coupled to an efficient library for the direct evaluation of molecular integrals, and problem-specific density matrix guess strategies. After describing the main features of the new code, we compare its efficiency with the current state-of-the-art ab initio strategy to determine crystal field levels and properties, and show that our methodology, as implemented in Ceres, represents a more time-efficient computational strategy for the evaluation of the magnetic properties of lanthanide complexes, also allowing a full representation of non-perturbative spin-orbit coupling effects. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
A series of mononuclear DyIII complexes with the general formula [DyLz2(salicylaldehyde)2]·X·solvent (Lz = 6-pyridin-2-yl[1,3,5]triazine-2,4-diamine; X = OH- (1·OH), Cl- (2·Cl), Br- (3·Br)) have been synthesized using mixed salicylaldehyde/pyridinyl-triazine ligands and discriminative counteranions. The DyIII ion in these three complexes resides in a similar D4d coordination geometry with counteranions perturbing the coordination environment and bond lengths and angles in the lattice. Magnetostructural studies reveal that the asymmetric distribution of salicylaldehyde/pyridinyl-triazine ligands and the presence of discriminative counteranions result in the coexistence of large anisotropy and quantum tunneling of magnetization. The magnetic anisotropy is dominated by the axial ligand field with short Dy-Osali distances and large ∠Osali-Dy-Osali angles, while the quantum tunneling relaxation is probably dictated by the π-π stacking of the Lz ligands, which induces an axial constriction of the coordinating plane. Ab initio calculations substantiate the diversity of the magnetic behaviors in these complexes and highlight the importance of axial ligand field with short Dy-Osali distances, large ∠Osali-Dy-Osali angles and less ligand stacking in these pseudo-D4d-symmetrical single-molecule magnets.
