Abstract
Direct β-carbon activation of propionic acid (C2H5CO2H) by carbene organocatalysis has been developed. This activation affords the smallest azolium homoenolate intermediate (without any substituent) as a 3-carbon nucleophile for enantioselective reactions. Propionic acid is an excellent raw material because it is cheap, stable, and safe. This approach provides a much better solution to azolium homoenolate synthesis than the previously established use of acrolein (enal without any substituent), which is expensive, unstable, and toxic.

Abstract
A highly enantioselective aza-Henry reaction with isatin N-Boc ketimines using a Cu(II)-BOX complex as a catalyst is described. The reaction, which does not require protection of the N1 atom, provides the corresponding nitroamines bearing a quaternary stereocentre with high yields and enantiomeric excesses (up to 99.9%).

Abstract
A highly diastereo- and enantioselective method for the construction of vicinal tetrasubstituted stereocenters through the first catalytic asymmetric Mannich reaction of linear α-substituted MTMs with isatin N-Boc ketimines has been developed. This protocol provides atom-economic synthesis of less accessible 3-aminooxindoles bearing vicinal tetrasubstituted stereocenters. Notably, it also constitutes the first example of stereoselective synthesis of β-amino thioesters bearing vicinal tetrasubstituted stereocenters.

Abstract
A dynamic kinetic resolution of β-halo α-keto esters in an asymmetric homoenolate reaction is described. A chiral N-hetereocyclic carbene catalyzes the a(3) → d(3)-umpolung addition of α,β-enals to racemic α-keto esters, forming γ-butyrolactones with three contiguous stereocenters. The addition occurs with high regio-, diastereo-, and enantiocontrol. This methodology constitutes an intermolecular DKR process to set three stereocenters during the key bond forming event.

Abstract
A highly regio- and stereoselective synthesis of bispirooxindoles by 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of in situ generated azomethine ylides from isatin and proline to different electron-deficient alkenes has been developed. The synthesis affords the desired bispiro scaffold compounds in excellent yields with high regioselectivity under mild conditions. The stereochemistry was determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis.

Abstract
An (S,S)-diphenyldiamine-derived bis(imidazolidine)pyridine (PyBidine)-NiCl2 complex catalyzed the nitro-Mannich reaction of isatin-derived N-Boc ketimines to construct a chiral quaternary aminocarbon center at the C3 position of oxindoles in yields of up to 99% with 95% ee.

A highly selective NHC-catalyzed synthesis of γ-butyrolactones from the fusion of enals and α-ketophosphonates has been developed. Computational modeling of competing transition states guided a rational design strategy to achieve enhanced levels of enantioselectivity with a new tailored C1-symmetric biaryl-saturated imidazolium-derived NHC catalyst.

Abstract
The asymmetric catalytic aza-Morita-Baylis-Hillman (aza-MBH) reaction of isatin-derived ketimines with MVK has been established by using chiral amino and phosphino catalysts. The reaction resulted in biomedically important 3-substituted 3-amino-2-oxindoles in good yields (>80% for most cases) and with excellent enantioselectivity (90-99% ee). Twenty-eight cases assembled with chiral quaternary stereogenic centers have been examined under convenient systems.
