Abstract
Commercial iron (II) phthalocyanine (FePc) was knitted with biphenyl using a Friedel-Crafts reaction to yield a micro-meso porous organic polymer (FePc-POP) with a specific surface area of 427 m2/g and 5.42% of iron loading. This strategy allowed for the direct synthesis of a heterogeneous catalyst from an iron containing monomer. The catalytic system, formed by the knitted polymer containing FePc and DMAP (4-dimethylamino pyridine) as base, results in an efficient heterogeneous catalyst in the cycloaddition of CO2 to epichlorohydrin to selectively obtain the corresponding cyclic carbonate. Thus, a TON (mmol substrate converted/mmol catalysts used) value of 2700 was reached in 3 h under mild reaction conditions (solvent free, 90 °C, 3 bar of CO2). The catalyst does not exhibit leaching during the reactions, which was attributed to the excellent stability of the metal in the macrocycle.

Abstract
In the present research, the synthesis, spectroscopic characterization, and structural investigations of a unique ZnII complex of imine-functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) is designed, and hereby described, as a catalyst for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from epoxides and CO2. The uncommon features of the designed catalytic system is the elimination of the need for a high pressure of CO2 and the significant shortening of reaction times commonly associated with such difficult transformations like that of styrene oxide to styrene carbonate. Our studies have shown that imine-POSS is able to chelate metal ions like ZnII to form a unique coordination complex. The silsesquioxane core and the hindrance of the side arms (their steric effect) influence the construction process of the homoleptic Zn4@POSS-1 complex. The compound was characterized in solution by NMR (1H, 13C, 29Si), ESI-MS, UV/Vis spectroscopy and in the solid state by thermogravimetric/differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), elemental analysis, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), cross-polarization magic angle spinning (CP MAS) NMR (13C, 29Si) spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography.

Abstract
The synthesis of cyclic carbonates from carbon dioxide (CO2) and epoxides is a 100% atom economical reaction and an attractive pathway for CO2 utilisation. Because CO2 is a thermodynamically stable molecule, the use of catalysts is mandatory in reducing the activation energy of the CO2 conversion. Considering environmental compatibility and the high-efficiency catalytic conversion of CO2, there is the strong need to develop green catalysts. Biomass-based catalysts, a type of renewable resource, have attracted considerable attention due to their unique properties-non-toxic, low-cost, pollution-free, etc. In this review, recent advances in the development of biomass-based catalysts for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates by CO2 and epoxides coupling are summarized and discussed in detail. The effect of biomass-based catalysts, functional groups, reaction conditions, and co-catalysts on the catalytic efficiency and selectivity of synthesizing cyclic carbonates process is discussed. We intend to provide a comprehensive understanding of recent experimental and theoretical progress of CO2 and epoxides coupling reaction and pave the way for both CO2 conversion and biomass unitization.

Abstract
An aminopyridinium ionic liquid is presented as a green, tunable, and active metal-free one-component catalytic system for the atom-efficient transformation of oxiranes and CO2 to cyclic carbonates. Inclusion of a positively charged moiety into aminopyridines, through a simple single-step synthesis, provides a one-component ionic liquid catalytic system with superior activity; effective in ring opening of epoxide, CO2 inclusion, and stabilization of oxoanionic intermediates. An efficiency assessment of a variety of positively charged aminopyridines was pursued, and the impact of temperature, catalyst loading, and the kind of nucleophile on the catalytic performance was also investigated. Under solvent-free conditions, this bifunctional organocatalytic system was used for the preparation of 18 examples of cyclic carbonates from a broad range of alkyl- and aryl-substituted oxiranes and CO2 , where up to 98 % yield and high selectivity were achieved. DFT calculations validated a mechanism in which nucleophilic ring-opening and CO2 inclusion occur simultaneously towards cyclic carbonate formation.

Abstract
The insertion of CO2 into epoxides and aziridines has been studied using density functional theory (B3LYP) and ab initio (MP2) methods, and the effect of substitution for the two reactions are further explored. It is found that the reactivity of epoxides and aziridines are similar, and insertion of CO2 proceeds through a concerted mechanism. The substitutions of methyl and phenyl does not change the reaction mechanism, but the transition state for the substitution on the attacking position becomes loose with a lower free energy barrier. The substitutions of methyl and phenyl decrease the free energy barrier, with phenyl substitution having a greater affect. The results also show that the free energy barriers for the insertions of CO2 into aziridines are ~10kcalmol−1 lower than the corresponding reactions of CO2 with epoxides.

Abstract
A series of highly thermally and hydrolytically stable porous solids with intriguing properties of zirconium- and hafnium-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) [Dresden University of Technology (DUT) series] was synthesized. The DUT MOFs were found to be effective catalysts for both epoxide-CO2 cycloaddition reactions and the catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of ethyl levulinate (EL). In particular, 12-connected DUT-52(Zr) showed higher catalytic activity than eight- and six-connected catalysts in the synthesis of cyclic carbonates as well as in the production of γ-valerolactone (GVL). The secondary building unit connectivity, coexistence of a moderate number of acidic and basic sites, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area, and combined effects of the pores of the MOFs seem to influence the catalytic activity. The reaction mechanism for the DUT-52(Zr)-mediated cycloaddition reaction of CO2 and the CTH reactions were investigated in detail by using periodic density functional theory calculations. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first detailed computational study for the formation of GVL from EL by using MOF as the catalyst. In addition, grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations predicted the strong interaction of CO2 molecules with the DUT-52(Zr) framework. Remarkably, the DUT-series catalysts possess extraordinary tolerance toward water. Further, DUT-52(Zr) is recyclable and is an efficient catalyst for cycloaddition and CTH reactions for at least five uses without obvious reductions in the activity or structural integrity.

Abstract
The development of new families of active and selective single-component catalysts based on earth-abundant metal is of interest from a sustainable chemistry perspective. In this context, anionic mono(formazanate) iron(II) complexes bearing labile halide ligands, which possess both Lewis acidic and nucleophilic functionalities, have been developed as novel single-component homogeneous catalysts for the reaction of CO2 with epoxides to produce cyclic carbonates. The influence of the halide ligand and the electronic properties of the formazanate ligand backbone on the catalytic activity are investigated by employing the iron(II) complexes with and without an additional nucleophile. Very high selectivity is achieved towards the formation of the cyclic carbonate products from various terminal and internal epoxides without the need of a cocatalyst.

Abstract
A facile approach for modifying the UiO-66-NH2 metal-organic framework by incorporating imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) to form bifunctional heterogeneous catalysts for the cycloaddition of epoxides to CO2 is reported. Methylimidazolium- and methylbenzimidazolium-based IL units (ILA and ILB, respectively) were introduced into the pore walls of the UiO-66-NH2 framework through a condensation reaction to generate ILA@U6N and ILB@U6N catalysts, respectively. The resultant heterogeneous catalysts, especially ILA@U6N, exhibited excellent CO2 adsorption capability, which makes them effective for cycloaddition reactions producing cyclic carbonates under mild reaction conditions in the absence of any cocatalyst or solvent. The significantly enhanced activity of ILA@U6N is attributed to the synergism between the coordinately unsaturated Lewis acidic Zr4+ centers and Br- ions in the bifunctional heterogeneous catalysts. The size effect of the ILs on coupling between the epoxide and CO2 was also studied for ILA@U6N and ILB@U6N. A periodic DFT study was performed to provide evidence of possible intermediates, transition states, and pathways, as well as to gain deeper insight into the mechanism of the ILA@U6N-catalyzed cycloaddition reaction between epichlorohydrin and CO2 .

Abstract
Given the large amount of anthropogenic CO2 emissions, it is advantageous to use CO2 as feedstock for the fabrication of everyday products, such as fuels and materials. An attractive way to use CO2 in the synthesis of polymers is by the formation of five-membered cyclic organic carbonate monomers (5CCs). The sustainability of this synthetic approach is increased by using scaffolds prepared from renewable resources. Indeed, recent years have seen the rise of various types of carbonate syntheses and applications. 5CC monomers are often polymerized with diamines to yield polyhydroxyurethanes (PHU). Foams are developed from this type of polymers; moreover, the additional hydroxyl groups in PHU, absent in classical polyurethanes, lead to coatings with excellent adhesive properties. Furthermore, carbonate groups in polymers offer the possibility of post-functionalization, such as curing reactions under mild conditions. Finally, the polarity of carbonate groups is remarkably high, so polymers with carbonates side-chains can be used as polymer electrolytes in batteries or as conductive membranes. The target of this Review is to highlight the multiple opportunities offered by polymers prepared from and/or containing 5CCs. Firstly, the preparation of several classes of 5CCs is discussed with special focus on the sustainability of the synthetic routes. Thereafter, specific classes of polymers are discussed for which the use and/or presence of carbonate moieties is crucial to impart the targeted properties (foams, adhesives, polymers for energy applications, and other functional materials).

Abstract
A new Zn-N4 -Schiff base L=((±)-trans-N,N'-Bis(2-aminobenzylidene)-1,2-diaminocyclohexane) complex was synthesized and fully characterized, showing an unexpected self-assembled double-stranded helicate structure. The X-ray crystal analysis of the Zn2 L2 complex ((C40 H44 N8 Zn2 ,CH2 Cl2 , a=14.2375(3) Å, b=16.7976(4) Å, c=16.1613(4) Å, monoclinic, P21 /n, Z=4) shows a centrosymmetrical structure in which zinc atoms are in distorted tetrahedral environments, revealing an M- (R, R) left-handed helicity in its asymmetric unit. However, it was observed that this dinuclear complex is thermodynamically unstable in the presence of small water amounts and undergoes demetallation into free N4-Schiff base ligand and ZnO nanoparticles. This hydrolysis process was thoroughly identified and monitored through detailed 1 H NMR, DOSY NMR analysis. The reaction mechanism of this demetallation event was elucidated by using the DFT method, involving an activation energy smaller than 13 kcal/mol. Besides, a theoretical mechanism of the demetallation process is given for the first time.

Abstract
A practical, safe, and highly efficient carbonylation system involving a diphenyl carbonate, an organocatalyst, and various diols is presented herein and produces highly valuable cyclic carbonates. In reactions with a wide range of diols, diphenyl carbonate was activated by bicyclic guanidine 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD) as a catalyst, which successfully replaced highly toxic and unstable phosgene or its derivatives while maintaining the desired high reactivity. Moreover, this new system can be used to synthesize sterically demanding cyclic carbonates such as tetrasubstituted pinacol carbonates, which are not accessible via other conventional methods.
