Abstract
A Lewis acid mediated electrophilic cyanation of 2,2'-biphenols with a trifluoromethanesulfonyl (Tf) protecting group is reported. The cyanation reactions with less toxic, commercially available MeSCN as a cyanating reagent afforded a range of 3-cyan-2,2'-biphenols in moderate to high yields. The use of trifluoromethanesulfonyl (Tf) as a protecting group is crucial to the success of this transformation. Moreover, the cyanated products were readily transformed into various synthetically useful molecules. This protocol features high efficiency, excellent regioselectivity, and good functional group compatibility and may provide a practical tool for the synthesis and modification of biologically active compounds, catalysts, and ligands.

Abstract
A transformation of fluxional into configurationally stable axially chiral N‐arylpyrroles was achieved with a highly atroposelective electrophilic aromatic substitution catalyzed by a chiral‐at‐metal rhodium Lewis acid. Specifically, N‐arylpyrroles were alkylated with N‐acryloyl‐1H‐pyrazole electrophiles in up to 93 % yield and with up to >99.5 % ee, and follow‐up conversions reveal the synthetic utility of this new method. DFT calculations elucidate the origins of the observed excellent atroposelectivity.

Abstract
We report design, synthesis and evaluation of a series of naphthalenediimides (NDIs) that are bridged with short peptides. Reminiscent of peptide stapling technologies, the macrocycles are conveniently accessible by a chromogenic nucleophilic aromatic substitution of two bromides in the NDI core with two thiols from cysteine sidechains. The dimension of core-bridged NDIs matches that of one turn of an α helix. NDI-stapled peptides exist as two, often separable atropisomers. Introduction of tertiary amine bases in amino-acid sidechains above the π-acidic NDI surface affords operational anion-π catalysts. According to an enolate chemistry benchmark reaction, anion-π catalysis next to peptides occurs with record chemoselectivity but weak enantioselectivity. Catalytic activity drops with increasing distance of the amine base to the NDI surface, looser homocysteine bridges, mismatched, shortened and elongated α-helix turns, and acyclic peptide controls. Elongation of isolated turns into short α helices significantly increases activity. This increase is consistent with remote control of anion-π catalysis from the α-helix macrodipole.

Abstract
The enantioselective construction of axially chiral compounds by electrophilic carbothiolation of alkynes is disclosed for the first time. This enantioselective transformation is enabled by the use of a Ts-protected bifunctional sulfide catalyst and Ms-protected ortho-alkynylaryl amines (Ts=tosyl; Ms=mesyl). Both electrophilic arylthiolating and electrophilic trifluoromethylthiolating reagents are suitable for this reaction. The obtained products of axially chiral vinyl-aryl amino sulfides can be easily converted into biaryl amino sulfides, biaryl amino sulfoxides, biaryl amines, vinyl-aryl amines, and other valuable difunctionalized compounds.

Abstract
Derivatives of 1,2‐dithienylethene (DTE) have superb photochromic properties due to an efficient reversible photocyclization reaction of their hexatriene structure and, thus, have application potential in materials for optoelectronics and (multi‐responsive) molecular switches. Transition‐metal complexes bearing switchable DTE motifs commonly incorporate their coordination site rather distant from the hexatriene system. In this work the redox active ligand 1,2‐bis(2,5‐dimethylthiophen‐3‐yl)ethane‐1,2‐dione is described, which reacts with [V(TMEDA)2Cl2] to give a rare non‐oxido vanadium(IV) species 3(M,M/P,P). This blue complex has two bidentate en‐diolato ligands which chelate the VIV center and give rise to two five‐membered metallacycles with the adjacent hexatriene DTE backbone bearing axial chirality. Upon irradiation with UVA light or prolonged heating in solution, the blue compound 3(M,M/P,P) converts into the purple atropisomer 4(para,M/para,P). Both complexes were isolated and structurally characterized by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction analysis (using lab source and synchrotron radiation). The antiparallel configuration (M or P helicity) present in both 3(M,M/P,P) and 4(para,M/para,P) is a prerequisite for (reversible) 6π cyclization reactions. A CW EPR spectroscopic study reveals the metalloradical character for 3(M,M/P,P) and 4(para,M/para,P) and indicates dynamic reversible cyclization of the DTE backbone in complex 3(M,M/P,P) at ambient temperature in solution.

Abstract
In this paper, theories on anisotropic crystal growth and crystallization of atropisomers are reviewed and a model for anisotropic crystal growth from solution containing slow inter-converting conformers is presented. The model applies to systems with growth-dominated crystallization from solutions and assumes that only one conformation participates in the solute integration step and is present in the crystal lattice. Other conformers, defined as the wrong conformers, must convert to the right conformer before they can assemble to the crystal lattice. The model presents a simple implicit method for evaluating the growth inhibition effect by the wrong conformers. The crystal growth model applies to anisotropic growth in two main directions, namely a slow-growing face and a fast-growing face and requires the knowledge of solute crystal face integration coefficients in both directions. A parameter estimation algorithm was derived to extract those coefficients from data about temporal concentration and crystal size during crystallization and was designed to have a short run time, while providing a high-resolution estimation. The model predicts a size-dependent growth rate and simulations indicated that for a given seed size and solvent system and for an isothermal anti-solvent addition crystallization, the seed loading and the supersaturation at seeding are the main factors impacting the final aspect ratio. The model predicts a decrease of the growth inhibition effect by the wrong conformer with increasing temperature, likely due to faster equilibration between conformers and/or a decrease of the population of the wrong conformer, if of low energy, at elevated temperatures. Finally, the model predicts that solute surface integration becomes the rate-limiting mechanism for high solute integration activation energies, resulting in no impact of the WC on the overall crystal growth process.

Abstract
Rhodium(I)-catalyzed atroposelective C-H arylation of heterobiaryls was presented. In the presence of a Rh catalyst derived from [Rh(C2H4)2Cl]2 and a TADDOL-derived monodentate phosphonite, with 2-pyridine, 2-isoquinoline and their analogs as directing groups, a series of axially chiral heterobiaryls were obtained in excellent yields and enantioselectivities (up to 99% yield, 97% ee) via C-H direct functionalization reaction. The products obtained from this method provide a platform for the synthesis of axially chiral biaryl ligands and catalysts. As a demonstration, a chiral N-oxide synthesized from the product in one step could act as an efficient catalyst for asymmetric allylation of benzaldehyde with allyltrichlorosilane, leading to homoallyl alcohol with excellent enantiocontrol.

Abstract
Configurationally stable, atropisomeric motifs are an important structural element in a number of molecules, including chiral ligands, catalysts, and molecular devices. Thus, understanding features that stabilize chiral axes is of fundamental interest throughout the chemical sciences. The following details the high rotational barriers about the Ar-C(O) bond of tropone amides, which significantly exceed those of analogous benzamides. These studies are supported by both experimental and computational rotational barrier measurements. We also report the resolution of an axially chiral α-hydroxytropolone amide into its individual atropisomers, and demonstrate its configurational stability at physiological pH and temperatures over 24 h.

Abstract
Four new C19-diterpenoid alkaloids brevicanines A-D (1-4) with rotameric phenomenon were isolated from Aconitum brevicalcaratum. They all possessed an unusual axial chiral phenyl-quinazoline side chain and their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis and chemical methods. Meanwhile, brevicanines A and B were semi-synthesized from their parent compound scaconine to further confirm their structures. Variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy was also used to investigate the atropisomers of brevicanine A, in which two sets of signals in 1H NMR spectra were observed at room temperature and coalesced over 140 °C. It's the first time to determine the atropisomeric preference of diterpenoid alkaloids.

Abstract
Herein we report a dramatic acceleration of the lipase-catalyzed kinetic resolution of atropisomeric 1,1′-biaryl-2,2′-diols by the addition of sodium carbonate. This result likely originates from the increased nucleophilicity of the phenolic hydroxyl group toward the acyl-enzyme intermediate. Under these conditions, various substituted C2-symmetric and non-C2-symmetric binaphthols and biphenols were efficiently resolved with ∼50% conversion in only 13–30 h with excellent enantioselectivity. The addition of a stoichiometric amount of Na2CO3 dramatically accelerates the lipase-catalyzed kinetic resolution of a range of atropisomeric 1,1′-biaryl-2,2′-diols.![]()

Abstract
Metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions are extensively employed in both academia and industry for the synthesis of biaryl derivatives for applications to both medicine and material science. Application of these methods to prepare tetra-ortho-substituted biaryls leads to chiral atropisomeric products that introduces the opportunity to use catalyst-control to develop asymmetric cross-coupling procedures to access these important compounds. Asymmetric Pd-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura and Negishi cross-coupling reactions to form tetra-ortho-substituted biaryls were studied employing a collection of P-chiral dihydrobenzooxaphosphole (BOP) and dihydrobenzoazaphosphole (BAP) ligands. Enantioselectivities of up to 95:5 and 85:15 er were identified for the Suzuki-Miyaura and Negishi cross-coupling reactions, respectively. Unique ligands for the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction vs the Negishi reaction were identified. A computational study on these Suzuki-Miyaura and Negishi cross-coupling reactions enabled an understanding in the differences between the enantiodiscriminating events between these two cross-coupling reactions. These results support that enantioselectivity in the Negishi reaction results from the reductive elimination step, whereas all steps in the Suzuki-Miyaura catalytic cycle contribute to the overall enantioselection with transmetalation and reductive elimination providing the most contribution to the observed selectivities.

Abstract
A highly efficient method to access axially chiral anilides through asymmetric allylic alkylation reaction with achiral Morita-Baylis-Hillman carbonates by using a biscinchona alkaloid catalyst was reported. Through the atroposelective approach, a broad range of axially chiral anilide products with different acyl groups, such as substituted phenyl, naphthyl, alkyl, enyl, styryl, and benzyl, were generated with very good yields, moderate to excellent cis: trans ratios, and good to excellent enantioselectivities. The reaction can be scaled up, and the synthetic utility of axially chiral anilides was proved by transformations. Moreover, the linear free energy relationship analysis was introduced to investigate the reaction.

Abstract
A palladium-catalyzed ketoxime-chelation-assisted enantioselective C-H olefination of 2-arylcyclohex-2-enone oxime ether with a wide range of olefins as coupling partners was developed. Employing ketoxime ether as an efficient directing group, a variety of axially chiral vinyl arenes was synthesized by Pd(ii)-catalyzed C-H functionalization with excellent enantioselectivities (96 → 99% ee) under mild conditions.

Abstract
We report a cinchona alkaloid catalyzed addition of thiophenol into rapidly interconverting aryl-naphthoquinones, resulting in stable biaryl atropisomers upon reductive methylation. An array of thiophenols and naphthoquinone substrates were evaluated, and we observed selectivities up to 98.5:1.5 e.r. Control of the quinone redox properties allowed us to study the stereochemical stabilities of each oxidation state of the substrates. The resulting enantioenriched products can also be moved on via an SNAr-like reaction sequence to arrive at stable derivatives with excellent enantioretention.
